  • Today we take a look at the Ruger LCP Max in 380 acp. I compare it to my other "pocket pistols" I have used over the years. A Kel-Tec P3AT, Kahr P380, Kahr P9 "Covert", and Rohrbaugh R9 "Stealth". Plus my favorite pocket holster, the FIST brand #5 holster. Then we take it out to the shooting range to put the first rounds through it out of the box. Shooting Remington UMC 95gr FMJ, Winchester white box bulk pack 95gr FMJ, Hornady 380 Auto 90 gr FTX, and Sig Sauer 380Auto 90 gr V-Crown JHP.

Great video…….I pocket carry my LCP MAX with a 12 round Mag and it conceals and carries well for me……A few hundred rounds through mine with no malfunctions of any kind……Federal Hydra shock is a great self defense round in .380…….I certainly do not feel under gunned for self defense with this pocket rocket…..😎👍

Try using “precision one” .380 ammo for it. Theres another channel that did a whole series testing different brands in a micro 380 to see which one performed reliably and to fbi standards. The two brands that “won” were fiocchi extrema and precision one. Since fiocchi is so hard to find then i recommend precision one

Sick of all the 380 haters. These little guns are reliable to shoot, well made, very good capacity and pack enough power to get you out of a close quarters incident. Once you realize these aren’t for military type shootouts and long range accuracy, you will just fine. A 380 in your pocket is better than the 45 in your safe

There's a UA-cam video with the Hydra shock fired through a silicone block along with a FMJ and another load. The Hydra shock got good penetration and the damage was considerably more than the other two loads. It's a lethal load.

Great pocket gun collection. Having smaller, capable firearms really does make it a lot easier to carry every day and it really increases the chances that people will take their guns with them when they go out. I know several people who carry, but don't have pocket guns... so they just end up not carrying when they go to a lot of places (or when it's hot and they're wearing summer clothing). I think a pocket gun is an absolute Must Have in every gun owners arsenal.

Thanks for watching deucedeuce1572! Here in central Texas, the summers are so hot that pocket carry is a great alternative. Especially now with good 380 acp offerings. Even a 22lr or 25acp can be effective. Like the old saying goes, better a 22 in your pocket than a 45 at home.

This is one of the best videos I've seen done on the LCP Max, hands down. I really appreciate the fact that you took it to the range and tried it with various types of ammo, since there was one gentleman who cautions against using it with hollow points in his video, due to a "feed issue" they cause. This is completely wrong. If you have a LCP Max that jams or fails to rack properly (go into battery), DO NOT carry it for another day without contacting Ruger's Customer Service. There are some known issues with the slides and barrels, and they will take care of it under warranty. I did that with mine, and they offer an estimated turn around time of 7 business days - not too shabby, although I wish the gun didn't have any issues to begin with. I am also requesting that they do something about the super light magazine release, since that's another known issue. The company I WON'T do business with is the one with poor quality control and crappy customer service. I'm happy to say that Ruger really seems to excel in the latter, which *almost* makes up for their shortcomings in the former.

Thanks for watching G-Dude! I also appreciate the kind words.
I agree with you sentiment concerning Ruger. I think sometimes thing slip by during the assembly of their firearms. But they have great customer service and have successfully fixed any issues I had.
You are also correct in your statement about having issues with your Max (or any other firearm) if it is consistently failing to feed/eject or go back into battery with good factory ammo. Send it back and they will make it function correctly. Which also is a good reminder to test your firearms with a box or two of ammo before relying on them for self defense.

I chose the Hornady Critical Defense, as well. The gel tests by Lucky Gunner helped me decide which would likely be most reliable. Seems like very few brands in 380 will expand or penetrate adequately and consistently, unlike the wide amount of choices that 9mm has.
I also had feed, magazine button, stove pipe, slide battery problems with a S&W Bodyguard 380, and a rented Ruger LCP II. Trying to adjust my grip helped a lot, but I didn't feel like I could keep the problems from happening 100% in a high stress situation. So I switched to a Sig P238. No more issues, and the kick is much easier.
Was tempted to switch to the LCP Max when it came out for the increased capacity. Tried it out at the range, didn't have the same issues I had with the LCP II, but the kick was almost as strong. Decided to stick with the P238, although it is single stack with 6 or 7 rounds. But Magguts springs will increase them by 1.

Thanks for watching John! You certainly can't go wrong with the Sig P238. Great little pistols with a good track record.
The Hornady Critical Defense seems to be a good option for smaller semi-autos. I use them as well in some of my small 9s. The cone shaped bullet helps with feeding and as you stated, they have good expansion.

Also the draw for me is perfect and the holster stays in the pocket, the only time I had jams was with Hollow points no matter the brand, so I carry the Critical Defense those are the only Hollow points that run perfect in my experience. I found the LCP Max to be what I wanted and hope to get one soon. It's about the same size as the 380 I already have, but I think less then 1/2 the weight and it holds about double the rounds, compaired to only 6+1 in my old 380. Some complain about not being fun to shoot alot of rounds through it, but I would shoot a bigger gun for fun. Though I would not want to put 100 rounds through it at a range it does fill the bill well (control, reliability) for defense, and the 12 rounds mags will instill more confidence. I'll even be able to use the same pocket holster I've been using.

Thanks as always for watching 1001Hobbies. I recall when Remington started making the RM380. Great pocket pistols for its time, but as always new innovations keep coming along. I would have never thought I was going to get yet another pocket pistol but the LCP Max was just too tempting with its shootability and magazine capacity. Hope you are able to find one for a good price! Now that they've been out for a while you can sometimes find them on sale.

I have the LCP Max Davidson's Elite edition (red trigger) and using Federal ammo at seven yards, can keep most of my offhand shot groups around 1.5 inches. Very accurate gun. When I went with my dad to a Lions Club meeting (I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas) and a Texas Ranger was the guest speaker, I got to talk to him afterward. About handgun shooting he said, "Son, you got to learn to stand up on your hind legs and shoot one handed like a man. Because your other hand might need to hold a door or a flashlight or something. And learn to use both hands." Still good advice, I think.

Probably not something I would recommend though. I bought the LCP MAX brand new and it had malfunction after malfunction using various types of FMJs, JHPs, and some Extreme Defenders. I had about 11 failure to feeds, 3 unwanted magazine ejections, a grinded down left slide, and a cracked right slide. My ejected casings were badly bent also. And this was all inside of 225rds. I sent it to Ruger and they could not fix it so they sent me a new one. I haven't fired it yet, but I will soon. I really want to like this pistol because of its size and capacity. The problem with the LCP Max and the LCP II with the larger base plate is that they won't easily fit in the back pocket of most jeans. Using the flush base plate, my LCP II fits perfectly in my back pocket. If a pistol is longer than 5" and taller than 4", you really can't consider it a "pocket pistol." Before I would consider the extra weight and size of the LCP Max, I would go to a 9mm.

For pocket carry; I have found no better pocket holster than: MIKA'S POCKET HOLSTERS. For Ammunition in 380acp: Underwood makes (2) great .380 rounds... Their Solid Monolithic Xtreme Defender and their Flat Nosed Hard Cast. Both penetrate well (especially the flat nosed hard cast) "AND" both function well in the pistol. This is my pocket carry when I am wearing light clothing or don't want to carry my Shield Plus. Sometimes I also keep it IWB with an Ulticlip since you don't need a belt with that clip. Either way, it completely disappears. I've put 500 or so rounds through mine without issue, a few different brands of JHP and Ball. For me the LCP Max is the best .380 option. It's reliable, holds 12+1 with factory mags and well, it's tiny. Also with the mags being small, carrying an extra is easy.
I can reliably put multiple shots on a human shaped target out to 12 yards. Any further, it's a bit more of a challenge to be on target but with some range time you get used to it. It's not a 'range gun' by any means, after putting a couple boxes through it, it starts to become uncomfortable. But that is irrelevant for a self defense situation. I don't feel like I would be at a disadvantage with this gun.
