    Another thing, Ser Ilyn Payne, captain of Tywin's guard, openly made a comment about Tywin being the true king, and had his tongue removed for that

    Man, I loved this. Every reference on the show to "The Mad King" is sort of meant as a punchline, but the life of Aerys II is a very tragic and somewhat sympathetic story.

    I think Tywin also felt some personal satisfaction in sacking king's landing as a way of sticking it to Aerys. After all he had toiled for decades making the kingdom prosper while Aerys took the credit. For all his hard work Aerys rewarded him with scorn and trying to ruin him.

      @@concept5631 That's normal. In the middle ages and even so now. The elite's feelings matter. Those of everyone else just don't matter.
      In the late middle ages this was especially so with knights treating each other with a lot of respect. But being completely casual about how many soldiers died under their watch.

    In case some people are wondering, "why do you say that its a theory when its confirmed in the TV-series?" - Martin himself has said that the TV-series is its own thing, and something being something in the TV-series doesn't mean that this something is also something in the books - and these videos are oriented to the books and their more extensive story/lore.

      JCO2able actually at the time it did one of the themes of the story is during the ancient times magic was more common.
      By the time of aerys life magic was basically seen as A myth. educated people like Tywin considered most of those stories to be myths.
      There is a theory that with the birth of dragons, magic returned to the world. Even people like Melisandre and the warlocks in qarth admit that their powers became much stronger recently and they aren't sure why.

      @@franciscomm7675 Indeed. I do think hand was the position for him to be in. He is great at getting stuff done. However his lack of charisma and unlikable personality makes him ill suited to be the face. If he had been king I do think there would have been rebellions as the major houses don't like the king lording over them too much. Tywin would be capable enough to crush those rebellions but that still is a drain on resources and foster a lot of bad blood. Tywin would be fair but sometimes being fair is not everything.
      Having the charming but weak king Aerys II be the face and the harsh but effective hand Tywin be the one making the decisions really was an ideal combination. That was until Aerys started making decisions.

      Westerlanders feared Tywin, but Northerners, Dornish, Valeman had no reason to be afraid of him, because of long distance.
      As confirmed by Cersei, Littlefinger… and literally everyone else, you cant directly control the North from King’s Landing. Dorne won 2 wars against Targaryens and Eyrie is simply impenetrable.

    Tinfoil hat theory, what if Tywin really did do all that? Like try to get Rhaegar to side with him, 8:36 kill the Lord he sent to find a wife (that way Cersei would marry the prince thus making Tywin and House Lannister more powerful) etc. I mean Tywin thought up the Red Wedding after all, it's entirely possible the "Mad King" become so Mad because of Tywin.

      He orchestrate the Red Wedding in time of open war. For him to do all the things your are mentoning seems a bit far-fetched since even with Steffon failing his quest it doesn't mean that Rhaeghar would have married Cersei. In fact he marries Elia in the end. Also that kind of gambling could have backfired against very badly him.

    One unfortunate fact as well is that Steffon Baratheon lost his father, Lord Ormund, in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, who was serving as the Hand of the King at the time, dying in his son's arms.

    What is exactly the law of "Rights of commoners?"

    • @Samaru163
      @Samaru163 7 років тому +11

      We don't know for certain, but during his reign, Aegon the Unlikely passed lots of laws that gave the common folks more rights, which made the lords of Westerose hate him. So it makes sense that Tywin would get rid of those laws first chance he got.

    • @MasterPoppers
      @MasterPoppers 7 років тому +3

      It should be noted that Egg posed as a simple squire for several years, serving Ser Duncan the Tall. During that time, he encountered many commoners and likely gained sympathy for them. Hence, him giving rights to the common folk. It was an extremely progressive move, and the right thing to do. We don't know all of the details, but obviously, the nobility were not happy with the reforms.

    • @MasterPoppers
      @MasterPoppers 7 років тому +1

      Before long, I expect a popular revolution, either through the Brotherhood without Banners or through the enforcement of Dornish law.

      Teleporting Varys.

      Napoleon Arya's journey makes a lot sense than Varys. He was in Sunspear at one point, and by the end of the episode he is somehow on the Dany's ship going back to Westeros.

      Bit of a stretch but Cersi, Daenerys, Yara (independence gained by helping danny) and Sansa (Isn't really but kinda is as Jon is king but she's the rightful head of house stark)

    • @oliverhancock5397
      @oliverhancock5397 8 років тому +4

      +Tom Cole no yara doesn't get independence... She tells them you will respect the sovereignty of my reign and the sovereignty of the 7 kingdoms... She does not grant them independence... Dorne and the reach are in the fold... So it is now battle of the iron queens... The lion vs the dragon... While the white wolf prepares for winter...
