A tale of hubris, and immaturity. Young David is what Lucy fell in love with, but it's also what drove him to death. The scene looking up at the stars. "You're still fighting for other people's dreams". (Not to mention he has a warped view of his mother's dream for him). But it goes for all these cyber guys. The itch to keep improving and getting more and more. Even though they know that it's not a matter of if but when, for cyberpsychosis. But David believed he was special on top of it all, too. Poor guy. Lucy couldn't save him. But at least his dream was for Lucy at the end.
It's a tale of a man with a simple, and understandable dream. To live up to everyone's expectations of him, and to give the ones he loves a chance to fulfill their dreams. The fact that he's called "special" is no coincidence, the thing about wanting to live up to people's expectations for you is something that's highly relatable, and super common in people with unique talents, or "special" people. You feel that you're special and that you NEED to live up to everyone's expectations no matter the cost. It's something that I have personal experience with. And yeah, while I love Rebecca and support the meme of "Rebecca is the best character in all of Edgerunners". At the end of the day, David's story and motivations hit too close to home for him NOT to be my favorite character in the show.
David took himself having a high tolerance as a sign he was just outright immune- that he was special. And while in the end he very well may have been special, being special doesn't mean you can just ignore all the warning signs and expect nothing to happen.
I can’t get over how cool the portrayal of this ability was in the anime. They could have gone with just the green filter and slowmo but they decided to also give it the after images,so it drives home how absurdly fast he is while using it.
Yeah it really hits different when you do the science and realize David is more or less mimicking the effects you would have if you were moving near the speed of light.
In 2020, cyberware worked by knocking off one Empathy point after another, the CP2020 equivalent to Charisma. People with higher starting Empathy obviously had a longer way to go before hitting 0. On your way down, you experienced losing one point of Empathy after another, each time making human interaction a tiny bit harder.
@@TipoIrritable There was no difference in cyberpsychosis resistance between characters. If you install a Mr. Studd it will give you 2 six-sided dice of Humanity Cost. So between 2 and 12 points. It's just luck. The more dehumanizing the chrome was, the harder it hit. One of the most HC-intense things you could install was a metal face mask. A necessity for complete protection of your brain if you wanted to be entirely coated in metal, but you were ripping your own face out and replacing it with inarticulate metal. 10 full HC means you knocked one point of Empathy off. Having high starting Empathy meant you had a longer way to fall until you hit 0. Each point knocked off made human interaction just a little harder though. People who have low Empathy to start with have less to give before 0.
The first hint that the Sandevistan is more common than believed amongst higher ups is when we first see the bearded cyber psycho at the beginning use one. If anything, after the opening, we were WAITING to see how many people were in use of it just because of how cool it looked.
@@smugcu3073 my point is that when he’s using it, one of the soldiers says he’s sporting “military grade ice” and the older soldier says “so? So are we.” My point isn’t that the cyber psycho is central to David’s Sandevistan. I’m saying the fact the soldiers weren’t intimated by the Sandevistan must mean it’s more common amongst the rich and elite. It’s like when a young adult discovers “whiskey culture” but to a weed smoker, it’s just another booze. Beneath them, possibly even.
@@Blast2224 Not really the rich, but the Military. The Cyberpsycho at the start was Ex-Military hence his Sandevistan. But then again, Maine was trying to buy that one via David's Mom. So very hard to get hold off and very expensive for Common People
Fun Fact: In the original Cyberpunk 2020 Sandevistan "Speedware" exists alongside Kerenzikov "Boostware", which is pretty much the same except for a few major differences. Kerenzikov operates slower than Sandevistan, but is always active, and cannot be turned off.
@@dustinjones7458 not really, you just have to recondition yourself to a slower moving world. Silverhand had a Kerenzikov, it was mentioned in the 2020 book iirc
If David had stuck to some leg implants, a monowire or mantis blade and maybe some reflex boosters, he'd be as effective and alive. It's pretty sad what powercreep does to you.
Yupppp. David thought a high tolerance for cyberware meant he had an immunity to cyberpsychosis, but the reality is that he only had a high tolerance. He eventually broke that tolerance, and it led to his death.
For context with people not familiar with the game, a lot of npc’s and yourself could use the Sandy but only to vaguely dodge for brief moments. David and Adam’s bursts were literal speedster movements. Loved their depiction of the speed movements.
Not really, as the player using a Sandevistan you can do the same as David and if you improve it with heatsinks you get unlimited sandevistan uptime without going cyberpsycho or receiving health damage, the latter happens to David because he installed the Sandevistan without proper training, meanwhile the ripperdocs in the game won't install you the sandevistan if you don't meet the minimum requirements unlike David's shady ripperdoc who in fact wanted him to go mad or die from using it. V from the game would wipe the floor with David even worse than Adam Smasher did. Besides David's sandevistan is probably the mk2 at best.
@@Deevious. The mk2 is the military version within game, it's the one max tac uses, I think this is also most likely the same version that David is using, the legendary and purple sandevistans are probably custom made and even better than military hardware.
@@abstractfactory8068 I feel like it’s not that simple though, it seems established that excessive cyberware usage will drive anyone insane eventually. by this logic some of the people involved in the cyberpsycho sightings probably shouldn’t have snapped, and in the tabletop game no one is immune from it, just a matter of time based on character stats. but I do think V is uniquely resistant to cyberpsychosis somehow, maybe because of how the Relic affects his brain. realistically though it’s probably mainly a gameplay decision that I can’t blame CDPR for

nope, cyberpsychosis were already killing david, in the last mission david said to rebecca that he needed that rebecca inject in him the drug to stay alive, but the doc say to him that when he uses the last dose of antipsycho drug, he will became psycho forever, so david take the big work to pay the future of lucy and the others, it was his final work so he wanted to be a job with a pretty good payment to do it, and david almost were psycho because he had changed too many parts of his body to cyberware, he had legs with charged jump, sandevistan, mini launcher in one hand, and several upgrades in his body, in one time the doc said to him that he need to update his cyberware to a more recent and optimized versions because he were in options to develop cyberpsychosis earlier because usually older cyberware stress more the body, in the game is stated that V has minimalistic cyberware even if you put something on every part of your body, but he/she had not mixed cyberware, and he/she is used to have major upgrades because his/her brain were rebuild by nanomachines to let the brain be used by the engram of johnny silverhand, and to can upgrade him in more ways, it was the relic developed by arasaka for rich and powerful people so it was put in mind that those people were going to get more cyberware than any other people to live more time, that is why V did not develop cyberpsychosis when even chippin all his/her body, because his/her brain were able to support those changes because of the relic implant.
Not really cause it was arasaka he was going up against, remember those guys had militech sandevistans like he did and even more implants to counter david so more then Lively he would have died anyway
I like the mirror between Simon from Gurren Lagann and David from Edgerunners. Simon in his character arc, wanted to live up to people's expectations and worked so hard for it to the point where he couldn't fight anymore. What ended up happening is that he had an awakening where he realized, he doesn't have to live up to people's expectations of him to become the new Kamina, just fulfill his own expectations of himself and embrace himself as Simon the Digger. David is like if Simon never had that awakening of him realizing that he doesn't need to fulfill other people's expectations of him. He thought himself as someone "special", and as someone "special", you feel the need to fulfill everyone's expectations for you. He never had that awakening Simon got, and instead of listening to his body that told him he couldn't fight anymore, he just kept moving forwards, in an attempt to please Maine, his mom, and Lucy's expectations for him. And eventually, it leads to his death. And although, tragic, he did end up fulfilling everyone's wishes at the end. One is a Tragic Hero, about a man who found himself, and saved the world, but ended up losing the love of his life for it. While the other is a Heroic Tragedy, about someone "special" who got too caught up fulfilling everyone's expectations, that it ended up with his brains scattered across the pavement. But at the end of the day, both their stories ended with them smiling, one had fulfilled himself, while one had fulfilled everyone's expectations that they had for him. Both will be remembered as legends til the end of time.

The writers knew precisely what they were doing and why, which is the opposite of blindly copying stuff.
The sad thing is that if he just stopped at the Sandevistan he might have loved a actual life and he kept going. Most folks don’t realize that the implant affixed to David’s spine is the neural processor. The Sandevistan itself is the small coprocessor that the Doc drops into the main processor at the end - you see it open-up and close.
@@pinkliongaming8769so basically the sandevistan is a small processor that fits in the palm of your hand. the thing is it won't work on most people because they have a civilian grade neuralink. The thing on David's spine is a top grade neuralink that makes david able to operate a sandevistan. A neuralink is a cyberware that connects it and other cyberware to your brain so you can control it mentally.
I never thought of that tbh but if we talking about technicalities David’s hand would also explode and the floor would also explode from the amount of force he would need to move that fast
PGR lasted only for few seconds but bosses can overcome it Shame it can't be upgraded like Nier Automata where perfect dodge + time stop chips works like Sandevistan

5:50 around here, no one talks about this, the most mind boggling part about this anime, David hits the Sandevistan so hard or maybe all the adrenaline of being shot in the gut hits him mixed with it he splits into 4 afterimage/clone things, Which is insane to me.
I really hope if they ever make another cyberpunk game, they make cyberpsychosis an actual game mechanic. Like you can choose to go through the game without any implants and it has an actual effect on the story
@@kimshi2002 Jetstream Sam had a legit Nano-suit enhancing his already nano-machine infused blood. Not AS bad as Raiden, but a normal human would have no chance of using standard reaction speeds to even fight, much less equal, Raiden during their first and second conflicts.
Its more about efficency i guess. David had limit-breaking expierience, his last effort to fulfill his love's dreams and pushing himself knowing, he isnt going to make it. For Smasher it was just a bit unusual day at work.
@2 minutes and 31 seconds - I never realize Cyber Psychosis started affecting David as early as a few episodes into the series. Damn, such a subtle detail that's easy to miss if you're not paying attention. But it's their.
That wasn't actual cyberpsychosis, that was just David experiencing an XBD where it makes it seem like he's a cyber psycho, hence the entire military and even Max Tac raining down on his ass
Remember that if they have this in real life then only the rich could afford it, and this have heavy strand on your body, normally you only suppose to use this about 2 time a day if you don't want your brain to explode
During the chase in episode 3, and judging by all the fast moves David made and us seeing him use it, my best guess is that he used his Sandevistan 15 times. At that with the times before and after the chase, David used it 17 times, which is almost 6 times more than what his ripperdoc's recommended limit.
From what I remember of 2020, the sandevistan implant didn't make you faster. It improved your Initative by +3, making you react faster than the world around you. You experience the world in slow motion, but you are not moving in super-speed apart from other objects in it. You activated it for bursts of five rounds or so. There was another model as well, kerenzikov boosters. They were a lot harder on your Humanity Cost since they were always on and you lived permanently in a weird time distortion. Their bonus was +1 or +2. On the plus side, they were always on. Both were neuralware, so you got to have a neuralware system to plug them into. And you couldn't have both kerenzikov and sandevistan, they are doing the same thing but placing the strain slightly differently. As a comparison, an experienced solo could get a skill that increased their Initiative. Solos with +5 or +7 were easily playable or encountered on the street, even +10 Initiative from pure skill and street experience existed in the world. But when solos face other solos, they value every edge they can get. Winning Initiative often determined entire firefights, you get to be just a fraction of a second faster when rolling into cover or lining up a shot on the other bloke. You could get an adrenal booster on top of those. +1 Reflexes (and therefore Initiative) a few times a day so not all that often compared to the pure neuralware.
I'd hate to imagine what war looks like in the world of cyberpunk. With everyone's sandevistan or kerenziko, the battlefield must look almost rehearsed
Oh, David... Dear David... My sweet, charming David... Have you so easily forgotten that I bestowed you with part of King Crimson's power? Now's your chance to apply your unique talents.
The "Sandevistan." The name supposedly derived from the word "Devastation," and rightfully so. If this existed in real life, so many people could do so many terrifying things in the blink of an eye
Taking in account it's price and problems with installation, it's still less devastating than a supersonic rocket. Although if the odds come across its real dread is that it can be used in nonmilitary situations, as a weapon of some cyberpsycho. But still, it's a really rare chrome in cyberpunk universe, according to series. So not so many people.
Sandevistan and mantis blade could have made a perfect pair. I don't get why he put on so much fire power (for long range) and speed enchantment (for close range), while still using sandesvistan. It baffling me.
3:34 he probably had lesser model of one of the Sandies probably one that only slows time down to 50% but notice have a caught David off guard and nearly hit him
I wonder how long he would have lasted if he just kept with his original mod? Maybe do a couple of light body reinforcements such as the bones or muscle, just enough to handle a little more than normal and call it good. Dude probably could've lived for awhile that way.

I can’t get over how cool the portrayal of this ability was in the anime. They could have gone with just the green filter and slowmo but they decided to also give it the after images,so it drives home how absurdly fast he is while using it.

Kerenikov also drives you cyberpsycho much faster. I think Smasher probably prefers that and considers Sandevistan a 'rudimentary upgrade'.
@@dustinjones7458 not really, you just have to recondition yourself to a slower moving world. Silverhand had a Kerenzikov, it was mentioned in the 2020 book iirc

He was already going cyberpsycho, without the suit Adam would've curbed stomped him, assuming he even would have gotten there in time since there was a Militech blockade and she was in an aircraft.
nope, cyberpsychosis were already killing david, in the last mission david said to rebecca that he needed that rebecca inject in him the drug to stay alive, but the doc say to him that when he uses the last dose of antipsycho drug, he will became psycho forever, so david take the big work to pay the future of lucy and the others, it was his final work so he wanted to be a job with a pretty good payment to do it, and david almost were psycho because he had changed too many parts of his body to cyberware, he had legs with charged jump, sandevistan, mini launcher in one hand, and several upgrades in his body, in one time the doc said to him that he need to update his cyberware to a more recent and optimized versions because he were in options to develop cyberpsychosis earlier because usually older cyberware stress more the body, in the game is stated that V has minimalistic cyberware even if you put something on every part of your body, but he/she had not mixed cyberware, and he/she is used to have major upgrades because his/her brain were rebuild by nanomachines to let the brain be used by the engram of johnny silverhand, and to can upgrade him in more ways, it was the relic developed by arasaka for rich and powerful people so it was put in mind that those people were going to get more cyberware than any other people to live more time, that is why V did not develop cyberpsychosis when even chippin all his/her body, because his/her brain were able to support those changes because of the relic implant.
David's Kamina would've been V but sadly his story doesn't start until a year later

Lived how he wanted and went out in a blaze of glory and disobedience david was a true cyberpunk
David: fast af boi
Smasher: imma end this boys whole career
Rebecca: AND DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT USING YOUR SANDEVISTAN
David:
There was one you missed where after he got expelled he laughed then sanded into his apartmant
I love when David brings Lucy to the car and he gives her a blanket, so sweet
What's the name of background song when David helps Lucy for the first time? The one that starts when she says 'showtime'.
Sustain/Decay
@@alphamonrx Thanks!
3:34 he probably had lesser model of one of the Sandies probably one that only slows time down to 50% but notice have a caught David off guard and nearly hit him
Fantastic video, thanks!
Very convenient summary of the Sandi.
I wonder how long he would have lasted if he just kept with his original mod? Maybe do a couple of light body reinforcements such as the bones or muscle, just enough to handle a little more than normal and call it good. Dude probably could've lived for awhile that way.
Could’ve gone for some leg upgrades

Song Name: Night City Aliens
By: The Armed (i think)
it goes so hard
"No you can't just spam Sandevistan, that's unfair!!"
"Haha sAndavistan go brrrrr"
my favorite bit is when we get to see the real time after, like you usually only get one or the other. its like the show goes "and thats what happened, got it? good, now, here it is again"
0:02 KING CRIMSON vs Sticky Finga 🗿
still watiing for the cyberpunk edgerunenrs game to play as david, with stroy changes like saving pillar, rebbeca and the others having a good end with everyone alive
3:53 the after images of his arms almost look like wings
Need detail! Nice job catching that!
i might have to rewatch this cuz its so good and i love the classic anime style
Dio and Diavolo: *So its the Same Stand as The Crimson World*

I love how David uses Sandevistan more in a 10 episode anime than Venom Snake speaks in the entire video game.
