I love your pearls of wisdom; the clean slate talk was exactly what I needed to hear. I turn 65 this year, and I've accumulated so many kits and projects over the years that recently it's felt more like there's too much stuff hanging over my head, and I'll never finish them all, and they're taking up so much space! I really need to pare down and take a long, hard look at which projects I'm still really in love with, and which were impulses that I'm just not motivated to do anymore; the ones that just feel like they'd be so much WORK, instead of FUN. I love your channel and appreciate you so much for the time you spend here with us.

I am 74 and trying to finish all my pilled up quilt tops. It is terrible to have to look at my quilting as a race against my years left on this earth. I have so many other tops I want to make. Heaven help me😂😂❤

Oh I feel you, I’m 73 and counted 264 kits plus 100’s of yards of fabric. I haven’t purchased much since we moved in 2020, only to actually finish 1-2 quilts. But time is ticking

I love the idea that you are going to make this change. I couldn’t guilt as much when I was working. Now that I’ve retired I have more time to quilt and I Love it! It’s so much fun to pick a project and fabric and roll with it. I’mat the point that I can make a quilt
w/o a pattern, using my favorite colors and fabrics, it the most creative freedom for me. I do have a short list of “must do” , but my creativity and fun are the goals now. Have fun you’ve earned it!!

Great show today I posted before that this is exactly where I am in my own head today. I’m retired. I’m 72 and lot of unfinished projects and a lot of planned projects that I’m not going to get to. And that’s OK finally. I’m going to do things I really really want to do and that includes writing a pattern for quilt that I designed that’s been on my bucket list for a super long time and you’re right it takes a lot of time and I’m going to finish quilts that I want to finish and start quilts that I want to start. I want to do just what’s fun now.

Pat, I am sooooo happy for you making this discovery of yourself and your projects. It makes me happy because I have been worried about you burning out for a long time. I made this discovery of myself years ago. I am a finisher. I like to finish the whole project then move on. Even to the point of using up the small scrap pieces to make a second small project from the remaining fabric that I can donate. This does a lot of things for me. Makes me feel good to donate, keeps my scraps way down and keeps fabric organized. Bigger pieces go to stash. Then I can move onto the next project with a fresh start. It is very freeing to be able to just start fresh on next project without having to worry I have others that still need to be completed. This works for me but I am so excited to watch this next phase of your journey to see what you find out that is the next way you want to approach it. As I said before, I will keep watching you everyday with my breakfast. It starts my day off right so thank you!

I am so with you, Pat. I am turning 74 next month and still have many interests including my quilting. When I first retired and thought I would, finally, have all this time for my quilting I put together several project bins with pattern and fabric. Several of those bins are still on the shelf not just unfinished but never started. Smaller projects appeal more to me these days. It is enciuraging to have a finished project much sooner rather than later. A larger project I fit in here and there while working on the smaller ones.

Pat, you are an inspiration to me! I have followed along with your quilty life since 2014. I've learned so much from you. You have given so much of your knowledge to your followers over the years. I enjoyed this video very much! I'm thankful you are self-aware enough to reevaluate your work and discern what works and doesn't work. In this I'm also learning! I've taken the opportunity recently to pull out stashed fabrics that I purchased several years ago and repurpose it for another project. It was freeing to do so and to see the beautiful fabric in a finished top instead of put away in a drawer was very satisfying.
I will pray for you as you embark on this new phase of your quilting journey to live in the freedom of creativity that is your passion. I will continue to follow your journey and learn from you as you move forward. Thank you for being real with those who do follow and listen! ❤

I so agree with you Pat! It is very easy to get overwhelmed with projects. I can't find patterns I want to use and I know I just saw one last week, but WHERE IS IT! I'm 70 and also have a lifetime or two of projects saved up! I've been making more pillows and using old fabrics from clothing I made for our girls (who are now in their 40's) as backing for then inside of pillows so they will have the memories with them. I'm saying NO to more projects and making items I really like and there are so many beautiful fabrics coming out every year to use! I want to make more decor projects for me as I give away most things I make. Trying to make more seasonal items so I can change them out like YOU do. Thanks for the pep-talk for us all. I have a few mystery quilts to finish as I didn't have the right fabrics for a section of the quilt so I stopped....another UFO in action!

I also am planning smaller quilting projects, so its not so physically daunting to finish quilting them :0. Playing with fabric is the best! When my mind is going in too many directions I'll go to my pretty fabric cabinet, and sit to go through it and get reacquainted with some of it. I forget how many pretty fabrics I have. When I'm done my soul is soothed, and I'll write ideas on my list. Looking forward to your new journey!

I love your emphasis on rebooting, clean slate, etc. A few years ago I started an Excel workbook with a list of all the projects I was working on and the status of each one. I update it about once a month...helps me stay organized and actually FINISH things. I also have a sheet in there listing projects I see on your and others' videos, blogs etc. that I would like to do. When I'm trying to decide what to work on next, I look at my list and decide if something still appeals to me (sometimes it doesn't!) and whether I have the perfect fabric in my stash, and that has done a lot to help me make the quilts that really bring me joy.

Last year I pulled out a quilt I made using thrifted men's shirts. I like to hand quilt but it is so time consuming and and uncomfortable to do in the summer. So I gave myself a challenge to big stitch quilt it and loved the look. I'm not entering in a competition, it's just for me and as we so often hear "there is no quilt police." Now after listening to Pat talk about working on "dormant" projects I've started wading through those because I'm afraid I'll die and no one will care about all those tops languishing in my sewing room.

    Hi Pat,
Clean slate what a novel idea, I decided starting in 2024 making smaller quilts twins and full size mostly. Doing more donations to non profits. Thinking about adding more table runners, table toppers and small door and wall hanging.
Rebooting or clean slate is a great concept although needing to include my UFOS in the mix.
You are truly inspiration ing. Thank you for all you do . Happy Quilting 🧵🥰

Hi Pat! Loved the thoughts from Saturday. I'm still in the process of going thru my fabrics/craft items to let go. I'm part of a group of ladies who get together once a month at a little neighboring town that we have access to the community center. Almost every month I take fabrics to give away. Once lady is thrilled to get them to use for backings! I'm thrilled they're out of my house 😊😊 It's been a long process to come to terms with the letting go, but I'm glad I'm finally there!!!

Good for you Pat, I would hope that every quilter only works on projects that make there hearts sings. I only make exceptions for someone very close to me that I really want to make happy. My sister wanted the Alaska quilt, a big challenge for me, mission accomplished, she very happy, whick makes me happy. Thanks for all you do. 👍❤️🙂

I’m excited to see you share projects that you are excited about personally. You have created so much content to help develop quilters with basic skills - I’m sure whatever projects you take on will build on that for the group. 😊

It was such a treat to see you sewing with your Featherweight today, Pat! I love my Featherweight and sew everything on her. But I did just buy a Baby Lock Jubilant and need to learn how to use it. I also loved your chat about shifting goals. Thank you for always brightening my day! 🥰

I'm beginning to something similar, thank you for showing how to adapt a pattern that fits your vision, fabric or time constraints. I came back to quilted witch garden and was not looking forward to all the pumpkins, so i decided to make 3 cats (love the kitties) one for each of my cats. I appreciate all the work you do!

I liked the chat about what projects we do. It is really easy to get caught up on all the beautiful quilt sew alongs, but what do I really have time or the heart to do. Like many others I am looking at making smaller projects. Have a good day

Pat, once again I am in-sync with You. Earlier this year when I did a declutter exercise and went through the patterns and decided that I wasn’t going to make that quilt - not what I want to focus on for skill building. Some of those were kits so that fabric joined my stash (win win). I do have a list of quilts that I have been wanting to make and they are 2024 “playlist” (one being your Oh My Stars). I will weave other projects along with the focus ones depending upon time/size. Even if I do not perform the quilt sewing, I always learn something from your demonstration of the process. Thank You for the smooches and love. Hugs back to you. - Marsha(from NC)

The clean slate approach is very freeing, I've been working on that myself. It's a kinda slow process for me, but I'm happy so far. I've reduced my stash of... Everything!! Lol I have taken up English paper piecing, doing the Dear Jane, some of my blocks look better than others, but that's ok. I'm almost finished with the Old projects that I still wanted to finish. I'm excited to start something new.

I love the concept of clean slate and I loved your chat about it. I have a dream list of quilts I'd like to make and I just keep adding to it. After listening to your chat, I think it's time to review and cull the list and focus on what I really want to make in the current moment. Thank you for these pearls of wisdom! I always learn something when I watch your videos.❤

Fun to see you using the Duchess. You inspired me! I had Jen find me a Featherweight. She refurbished it and had it painted blue. Just love it! The other day I finished making a quilted flannel cover for it and also one for my Bernina 830 Record ( made between '71 and '82). Another great machine that I sewed on in a costume shop in southern CA. I loved working on it so I bought one.ENJOY!

Love it when you keep it real. We are the boss of our own quilts. To do or not to do or to edit the whole project. You hit it on the head. I have also been taking second looks at things that I THOUGHT I wanted to do and now are finding many times it's not so much! Good on you, Pat. I like your ‘clean slate’ thought process. I’m having a UFO year with a few quilting friends. We can start a shiny new thing but mostly we are concentrating on UFOs. We all have a list and I draw a number on the first of the month. It’s going really well with lots of projects getting finished, not necessarily as it was first envisioned, sometimes a quilt is turning into a table runner or even a tote bag but the projects are moving along and coming out of coffins (project boxes)!

I was struggling with so many projects, I went back to one of the first quilts I made, loved it, gave it away to a lovely couple that was sadly moving. I kept thinking about how much fun it was to make and scrapped all my present projects and decided to make one for myself, am having fun again!

I quilt for joy. It brings so much joy to create and make for myself. I gift many of the quilts I make and that gives me joy as well, but the joy of the making part is why I do it. I can't wait to see what is on your list of what brings you joy to create. Whether or not we "the royal we" want to make it with you is ok. I bet many will be inspired by your list! Me, having just found you last fall, I have loved catching up on your journey through your videos. So I watch way more than one a day. I've deep dived into your patterns and plan to create some of your past QALs! Currently planning the scrappy heart quilt and the current sampler from the Celebrates with Quilts book. Made 6 shoo fly blocks last night.

Pat, I really enjoyed your chat. I am so in love with your Breakfast Club quilt that I kept getting distracted by it and had to rewind the video a few times to listen to your chat.😂 I may make 1 at a later date even though it won't fit in my small kitchen.
