Yes!!! Yes!!!Yes!!!
Me too!
Me too!!!
Me, too!
I totally agree!
I’m so grateful for your morning videos. I’ve been quilting for more than 30 years, but you always teach me something new. That’s one of the reasons you are so special-you are a teacher, an advocate for quilting, a community builder, and a friend to all of us. Thanks so much, Pat.
I couldn't believe you said HAM radio! My late father was an operator. I was born towards the end of 1959. He would have me on his lap. Family story was I would hand him a screwdriver and say "here" and point to the radio or something and say "there". My dad said I couldn't talk on the radio (not licensed 😊). His friend built me a wooden "radio" with turning knobs. Through the early 1970's Dad had an antenna on his car for the radio. It looked like a pipe with a halo at the top. I didn"t know anyone else who had one. Rather than beibg embarrased, we said it made it easy to find the car in a parking lot! I embroidered his call letters on a woven shirt and had a store put his call letters on the front of a t-shirt and CQ CQ CQ on the back. Dad would go to field days which I think was fun and also practice in case of an emergency. Thank you for stirring up good memories!
My FIL was a radioman on a submarine during WWII and pursued HAM radio as a hobby for many years after that. He had a room full of equipment. I don't know what class license he had, but he thoroughly enjoyed the hobby. No real story, just a way to honor his memory by talking about him.
My husband and I are both Ham Radio Operators! My husband is also an Extra. Cool thing is that my Dad was a HAM and got his license in 1958. I was born in 1959. After he passed I applied and received his call sign as mine!❤❤
We (my husband and I) owe a great deal of gratitude to the ham radio operators of America who unselfishly gave their time to put through calls for soldiers in Vietnam to their loved ones back home. Because of them we got to talk to each other during a very hard time in our lives and the lives of others. So a big thank you to all of you!!
My dad was a ham radio operator. His call letters were K2HRH (His Royal Highness)-just a nickname, and I was the little princess. I remember being in awe of how fast his hand would go typing morse code. His whole radio room was covered with postcards with call letters from people he communicated with all over the world. One time his postcards to send to other operators were misprinted with no color so he had me help him color in the outline with colored pencil. So fun!
My husband is a Ham radio operator as well. We are from Idaho. His call sign is NX7G. He also has his extra license. He belongs to the Eagle Rock Amateur Radio Club which he was president of for a year or two. He participates in Emergency Response exercises every year and constantly reads up on whats new or all things ham radio. He has been asked to head up the Bonneville County emergency response when he is ready to retire. He also likes to take me to different quilting shop hops and workshops around the country when we can get away and he gets out his portable equipment to try to make contacts. He currently has to do his nets in his car because his main antenna blew over in a storm we had a couple of months ago and our weather has been weird (typical Idaho) so he can't fix his antenna yet. He wants me to get my license as well but I have not found the time to do it as my interests are in other things. I am a musician and I told him I think I could learn Morse code easily because I am really good with rhythms but I have not pursued it yet.
I am so grateful for ham radio operators! In the 1970’s, we were stationed on Guam. An international phone call was absolutely unaffordable. Ham radio operators to the rescue! We would schedule a call to a local ham operator who would patch us through to other ham operators who would then call my parents. To actually be able to talk to my parents (even though we had to say over to indicate we were done talking) was just a life line. A huge thank you to all those ham operators!!! Give your husband a huge hug from me!
I was also in Guam in the mid1970’s. We called home twice from Anderson AFB , once for the birth of my son and once after typhoon Pamela. We talked three minutes and at the time it was a fortune. Ah, memories!
My husband and I are both HAMs 🎉 so fun! I don’t chat too much but he is on the radio pretty much every day!
Put, regarding the hanging rod and brackets, if you split the sleeves on your quilts that you want to hang there, rather than one long sleeve put on two or three, that will solve your problem. We have the same issue here and found this to be the solution. We didn't need anymore holes in the wall as ours is over a staircase!
Or use the rings with clips that you buy in the isle with the rods at Wal-Mart
Working in a hospital, we actually had a ham radio for use in large emergencies if the phone lines went down, and people on staff who also were operators. Thank You to these folks who are also 1st responders!
My husband just got into ham radio. He was inspired by hoe important it was during a recent disaster. He loves talking to different people. I figure as long as he has hobbies he doesn’t judge my quilting habit. Love you Pat!
My Dad was a Ham Radio Operator. He started as a kid in Chicago. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor during WWII. Because of his knowledge and experience with this, he was able to serve as a radio operator in Hawaii. As a child, I remember him calling his brother on his Ham Radio on Saturday nights. He used Morse Code to communicate as well as voice. I have seen Morse Code Quilts, but not amateur radio quilts.
Thank you, Pat! I have never used the triangles on a roll, but they may be in my future! They look so good! I am glad the ant didn’t run across your lens! At least he stayed out of our sight! I am looking forward to watching you make the Heart of America quilt! Thanks!
Pat I misssed you Monday. I feel like I am visting with a friend when I watch.
My father was a HAM radio operator. I am 76 so this was many years ago. He would help people communicate with there family sometimes during storms. I remember the big antennas by our house.
When I was a teenager, one job I had was housecleaning for my dancing teacher. Her husband had a ham radio set up. I don’t remember much except him talking with people from all over the place. Thank you so much for your videos. They are such a treat for me. I have been quilting since my children were toddlers. Now my youngest has a toddler of her own. And I learn so much from you. I love your channel because it is more like a quilter’s lifestyle channel. So much fun ❤
thank you !!
I have an amateur radio license - N2LRC and my husband is KE2UA. We are not active but still maintain our licenses.
My Haiku: Quilting is so fun. I have quilted for four years. I am hooked for life!
My nephew is a storm chaser here in Oklahoma for a local tv station. I think he got his radio license about the time he got his driver’s license. We’re fortunate to call him family. He tells us when we should really worry about storms. 🌪️
I look forward to your show. Watching is my favorite way to start my days while waiting on or sipping my first cup of coffee in the morning.
I love watching everyday. I watch each morning while having breakfast..
Quilters! Pat shows the less expensive version of Faultless' Niagara spray, which is found in the laundry supply aisle of your grocery store or Walmart. If you find it in your local quilt shop or in Joann Fabrics, it will be labeled specifically for quilting, with a higher price. I suppose it would depend upon whether you are on a fixed income (like I am), or simple convenience, regarding where you pick it up - just keep in mind, the label is the only difference!
Greg will probably recognize the Smith chart that is in the back of the ham radio book . My father-in-law is the one who designed it. There are even quilts out there done with that design
*********Pat you can hang a larger quilt on the poles behind you without moving them.........
You can make the sleeve smaller than the size of the gap between the brackets and it will hang flat. The extra quilt width will just cover the pole ends*******
I hope this helps ❤
My late husband was a ham radio operator WA7CGW. He also had his extra license.
it is a great hobby
My grandfather in the 70's did ham radio, and gave his grands a handle.Ours was West VA hillbilly(we lived there at the time) and potato digger...fond memories😊
My dad and uncle were into ham radios. It was fun to listen to my dad talking on the radio. We had the tall tower in the back yard.
Well, I’m keeping track of the temperature, but have not had a chance to start; but I plan to do just averages. My “new knee” interrupted a lot of my plans; however I’m getting back on the wagon, 😊😊😊😊
My father was a ham radio operator. He was in the Army-Air Corp as a radio operator and an airplane mechanic. He used Morse code as well as my grandfather who was a train depot agent from 1908-1941 !!! I received his radio upon my mother’s passing but my nephew expressed interest so I sent it to him.
You are my ‘cup of coffee’ first thing in the morning ! I appreciate your fabric choices for your projects. Some might not be what I would choose but you help me broaden my mind to acceptance and it stretches me to think outside the box !! I still like the old fashioned way of doing things and hand piece and quilt. Meditation at hand. Pat - YOU ROCK! Thanks for your uplifting attitude and enthusiasm. See you in the morning ☕️
So many similarities between us! My husband is an amateur radio operator too and is the same level, Extra. I used to write haiku with a work friend, so I wanted to include one here:
Quilting is such fun
Colors and fabulous prints
Beautiful love work
😊🪡
Every morning I wake up and watch your videos.
My late husband was k6shc. He said he was short-haired Charlie.
Can’t seem to say it enough, your countdown of the last minute to video time is so amazing & entertaining for me. Thank for all you share.. 👍❤️🙂
The previous owner of this house had a huge ham radio setup here including an extra large tower in our backyard! We still have the concrete base behind our garage as it is supposedly a 4'x4'x4' cube of concrete and rebar
Congratulations on all the subscribers! You’re still the best😊
My FIL was a HAM in Australia - before he passed. I also showed Hubby as he was HAM - (hasn't operated for several years) he was interested to see Mr. Greg's call sign.
cool!! he should get back into it, it's a great community
On Heart of America, I used Kimberly's trick of cutting the sashing a bit bigger so I could square up to the exact size. If you don't get the center perfect, the next round doesn't fit!
Hi Pat, way back in 1970 (you & I are the same age) my one brother & I went to visit our Dad & his wonderful wife who lived right outside of Death Valley, CA. We lived in a small town near San Luis Obispo, CA, quite near the beach. Our Dad took care of the roads in that area, keeping them in good shape for safe travel, especially when there were rains in the mountains around the Valley & when those rains came down they became flash floods, washing out roads & sometimes stranding vehicles. Of course at this time there weren't any cell phones, no t.v., no regular radio (we had stereo albums to listen to) but the emergency communication was the gigantic ham radio in one of the spare rooms, which I was staying in for the summer. With very strict instructions not to touch or mess with that ham radio in any way. That radio sure fascinated me though and it was set to Loud! We had a wonderful summer out there though, there were three State houses for employees & one restaurant that had a pool that we spent a lot of time in. After we returned we found out that Charles Manson & his followers were living in a different valley not too far away from where we were, at the time of their horrific crime related to Sharon Tate.
Also I wondered if you would add any of your brighter blue fabric from your personal line of fabric for this new project? I do like the country blue, but I didn't notice any strong blue color to match that beautiful strong red color. Maybe you could add some small punches of bright blue (I just love it).
Way back in the day, husband and I and other family members did ham radio. Had the Big Tall towers in the back yard . It was fun seeing how far we could reach out. Still recall the call letters and handles. Keep it going Greg. 11:02
My husband and I are ham radio operators. I'm at the tech level, husband next level, no code. We're not very active, fun to listen!
Thank you so much for doing this quilt along. I truly appreciate the tips, tricks and visuals. You'r just darling. I'm new to your site and so glad to find you.
You are so welcome! thank you for joining me!
My husband is also a top level Ham. I am a first level but it isn’t really my thing. We are going to the big convention in Ohio next month. I will sew in our trailer while he goes to the thing.
Funny. Can tell your heart isn't in "the thing". Sometimes people meet and get so enthusiastic about their shared interest that we can feel sort of left behind. You sew girl! You will both have a nice day.
Our oldest son is a ham!
My dad was on what we called C.B. Radio when I was a kid. He did it up until he passed at age 83. They would all have “Call Signs” or nick names they would go by, I was probably about 5 and he would let me talk on it. I was given the call sign Jelly Bean. We had Christmas parties and other get togethers for many years. Fun times and great friends were made. After over 50 years, I can still remember my dad’s “official” radio number.
great memories! the CB radio community is different. No license and different equipment
Hi Pat. I really like the top you have on. I enjoyed the video today, what am i saying, i enjoy ALL of your videos. Thanks for sharing
I’m making this tiny HST to make friendship stars on a border of a quilt I am making for my granddaughter. They are tiny!
I like the temperature houses but being in Arizona, I'm afraid I'd end up with three months of houses stitched in Satan Red. Just not much temp variation in summer.
My BFFF (best fabric friend forever!) is a very active HAM radio operator here in Texas.
Love the BFFF! Verry clever. I had not heard it used before.
I have some to catch up on. I going to do a pat saline day tomorrow. I have a small wall hanging in my quilt rack for a friend's anniversary . I do it by hand. I have two blocks that Ohio Star, one Ohio colors-they are from Ohio, the other navy colors, he was in navy, one wedding ring. (Found pattern called one wedding ring). They like lighthouses. I applique a light house. So I am working on that, having a pat saline marathon. I can't wait.
Boy do I need a new cover for my ironing board surface! It has muslin on it and from spraying with Best Press, or other starch, it’s so stained!! Quite a while ago I bought Teflon fabric to replace it, but need my husband to help, and he’s always very busy with not only our house, but he helps 2 of our sons with their house needs.
My son in law does ham radio and my daughter and I did a quilt for him with his call letters on it
Hi Pat, my Dad was a Ham Radio holder too. WA4LVO was his handle. He wanted my sister and I to get our license before we could get our drivers license. It didn’t happen thank God. I will always remember is handle.
That sure is a quick way to get 40 HSTs. Also if other forms of communication goes down, the ham radio operators will still be able to keep things connected.
Regarding the star quilt, it looks like if you took out the inner border you could just drop one flying geese unit from each side and it would work out? Maybe?
Love your videos ❤ thank you for my daily inspiration
I am having Soooo much fun with the Wed quilt along. The first one that I have tried and loving it.
Hmmm might have to do a last minute gather up of fabric . Been wanting to do some sort of red, white, and blue for awhile. My brother is a ham radio operator in Ohio and has done it for years. Mobility now is not one of his strong areas so the radio has been great for him. Enjoy your day.
I have a rod I hang different sized quilts on also. I use the ri gs with clips and extend or shorten the rod for the size of the quilt and space out the rings.
I learned to starch with Kimberly and now my blocks come out perfect. I love the starch method.
We LOVE you too, Pat! Thank you for the lessons!
I've used the rings with clips on them to hang quilts from a rod like yours so that I don't have to move the brackets which works out well.
I just finished the Heart of America….. didn’t it to be so long so I left off the extra top and bottom borders….mine finished 60” square. I starched, used my stash and did flying geese for that blue border instead of all the HSTs. I have quite a collection of “thangles” papers so they were definitely used for the small stars and the red HSTs. It turns out beautifully. Waiting for my backing fabric order from Fat Quarter Shop to arrive.
my husband is a ham radio person and his dad and Brother were too plus a best friend. He is in a club. has been one since the 70's.
Thank you for all you do for us, you have such a beautiful smile!
I can't cut sitting down either. Love your videos.
Hi Pat...thanks so much for all you do. Just a lovely dose of positivity each day. With the Heart of America, you could just eliminate the inner border and make one less pair of HSTs for each side on the second border for a total of 4 less pairs. Then there's no retracting needed, but the look would change a little with the second border now right next to the star. You would just have to decide if you like that look.
Redrafting... not retracting😂
I love triangle paper. I love the color you chose for the quilt. The heart is adorable. ❤
Love the flea market cross stitch 😊
My uncle was a ham operator...K6HAA (King 6 Henry Able Able). I have no idea if he is still active, I loved to sit in his room with him and listen. Sometimes he let me talk. Gig from California
Graduations!!! For the 110m
A tip on using the papers...press triangles open before removing paper. Keeps the stretching at bay!
Thx. My brother is an avid HAM radio guy. I got to surprise him and recognize him today because of your tip.
Thank you Pat for your UA-cam channel!!! I enjoy watching you everyday!❤❤
Oh Pat! You Crack me up! Tis the season of the bugs!!!! Here in NY the bugs don't know what to do. It's hot, It's cold, It's Sunny, " it's snow. Who the heck knows what the weather will be here In WNY. LOL!😜😜😜 I am so excited to start Heart of America!!!!!
Love your videos Pat! Congratulations on your subscriber success!
Thank you
My mum had a ham radio (CB) that I also used to talk on we made many friends some we had met in person others were long distance friends. We enjoyed it very much my handle was Little Rat LOL
I love the fabric you are using! This is going to be another beautiful quilt! Thanks for your daily videos!
Hail story… last month I went on vacation with a friend. I left my car at her house and another friend took us to the airport. While we were gone there was a terrible storm in her area with baseball size hail! Yep, my car was beat up when I got back. The windshield was cracked so bad it looked like giant spider webs! I had to drive it 3 hours to home. The insurance company totaled it. My new car will be here next week!
Pat for the America pattern, u could always leave off the two side triangle borders and maybe do a patchwork thinner border on each side like the top and bottom ones, and just do the triangles on the top and bottom. Just a thought, looks like a fun sew.
Pat, if you want a smaller heart of America quilt...would this be an option. Make the center part as the pattern states. The first background border could be a little narrower BUT instead of doing the blue HST's around the center medallion, could you put an edge of prairie points?? It would give a very similar look as the blue HST'S but you would not need to do all of the recalculations. Then you might not need to widen your hanging rod😊..just a thought.
you might be able to do that. I like the blue HST so I'm keeping them
W8YCP checking in 8 days after this video was first posted. 🙃 My husband is NI8N and my dad was W8OK. My current call was my dad’s first call and I am honored to have it. Dad was one of the founding fathers of the Dayton Hamvention which is like Paducah for quilters. LOL I’ve made a couple of code quilts for my husband, which are fun because very few people understand the “hidden” message.
that is very cool history to your call sign!
This is the best community ever!!! I had a radio license in high school and we had a radio station at our high school
Did not know you were doing the Heart of America as a sew along. I have mine almost finished and thought I would tell you what I did. I had a layer cake so I am using it and there is enough to do it. I added the blue and background. I did the red HST using the 8 at a time method with 6 of the reds and trimmed to size. Also I "cheated" on the blue HST in the border by doing flying geese units 4 at a time from 7 of the blues. works quite well All the layer cake squares left will go in the last top and bottom borders. Thanks for all you do!
Hi Pat! Love your videos. I just ordered the same 3 heart quilt hanger - it’s so cute. Your cross stitch wall hanging looks adorable on it.
I love your dailies! Just a thank you for keeping me motivated with my cross stitch. It can easily get pushed to the side. I have used the tiny craft zip bags for many years to store my threads. I just pull out the ones I need for my project and slip them in a jump ring. I can even save stands that I use only a little bit of. Hate to waste! And love that I found my dmc again at FQS! No one local sells them anymore. It’s all online.
Love! ❤
My husband is a ham also since he was around 12 years old.
I can only rotary cut sitting down with my 28mm cutter. I have to stand for the 45 and 60mms. Must be angles and leverage.
I think you can remove that 4 inch wide white border on each side. I think those parts are similar size to two of those half square triangles. It looks like in removing a few of those after the white border. Not sure how would adjust the quilt. You have a program that might work that out.
Love your shows. I relate to so many life things you talk about…I learn…I agree…I laugh…I smile…I enjoy.
thank you for joining me!
I watch everyday usually the replay because I have to get my Great-granddaughter off to preschool.
Good morning, the Heart of America is a beautiful pattern, but as we have chatted about before “ it is on the some day list. Too many other things going on. I will live vicariously through you. It will be so pretty hanging on your fireplace wall. Have a good day.
Thanks Pat!
Congratulations on the new goal!
You teach and I watch and it’s nice to learn
thank you!
I enjoy your videos!!! So much inspiration:)
Enjoy my mornings with you Pat. The new quilt will be beautiful, but I do so love the Aurifil quilt behind you. Will miss it when it comes down. Where did that pattern come from? Anyone?
