  • This week I give you some easy steps for finding and playing all of the arpeggios and chord tones to be found in any 3 note per string scale anywhere on the neck.
    Practicing these techniques will also open your eyes to each position of the neck and get you thinking much more "vertically" and harmonically rather that and linearly. So is a great way of moving you beyond just playing up and down the scales.

    Of all the underrated guitar teachers on youtube, you're fast becoming one of my favorites =) you have a knack for condensing and presenting information that fills in blindspots I didn't even know I had

    Hi Steve. Am just learning this in the CAGED System and this is great reinforcement of applying the concept in the Root, 1st and 2nd inversions of the triads.
    Great stuff as always! Hope you get a lot more subs soon to share in your knowledge.

      @@SteveGilson Going to take look at all of them, I've played for decades. But there's always something to learn. Also I know other guitar players that definitely could use your help and learn from your knowledge. With so many channels in guitar, it's difficult to find the channels that teach and at a pace that encourages people. Tremendous video and looking forward to your future videos. Take care!

      Thanks, people tend to gravitate to the 3 note per string deep dive series, or the advanced fingerpicking series depending on their interest, but I've covered a lot of material over the years! 😄

    Helpful insights.
    This might sound too complicated...but..in line with what you have ...I find myself thinking about three arpeggio choices from a root:
    1. The 3NPS whole-whole pattern as you start with here, (‘toward the bridge,’ connects to D Form in CAGED)
    2. Another pattern ‘toward the bridge’ that relates to the CAGED E form, and to the 3NPS half-whole, and
    3. A pattern ‘toward the nut’ that relates to CAGED G or C, and to 3NPS whole-half
    That’s probably too cryptic but let me see if it makes any sense....
    Cheers

      Yes I think I understand you. In this case you're describing the root note falling on the low E string? and yes I'll use all three. How do you adapt things for a root falling on the other strings?

    • @davidhallowell3457
      @davidhallowell3457 5 років тому

      Using the 3NPS for first orientation...starting on the low E, with index finger on root..scale is ‘toward the bridge’ ...the first 3NPS pattern is whole-whole (2 fret spacing) on E an A string, then half-whole (with middle finger on root), then an octave with whole-half (with little finger on the root). Those show all three of the patterns I see in more places, and in more CAGED view.
      For example, on low E, we might put middle finger on root, and there’s an octave, toward the bridge, that’s really the middle of the examples above. That’s an E form, right?
      Also on low E, if we put little finger on root, we see an octave, toward the nut, using the third of the 3NPS patterns in the first example (whole-half for two,strings)..its a G form.
      Move that whole thing to the A string, 5th fret, say... same 3 choices... index finger start, whole-whole 3NPS toward the bridge, middle finger start, half-whole 3NPS, A form, or little finger start, toward the nut, whole-half 3NPS, C form.
      Not trying to create a blur ... just enthused at the way,as you have pointed out, all these things criss cross and support one another.
      Hope that makes a little sense

      I wondered if that was the approach. I love the enthusiasm that you bring to it David. Its good to connect to another kindred spirit :o)

    Can We Sweep this kind of patterns ?

    • @SteveGilson
      @SteveGilson  2 роки тому

      The issue with sweep picking is that you want an odd number of notes on a string to continue in any direction. 2 of these shapes have 2 notes on one of the strings. The best way of playing through these is to pick one of the notes and hammer on or pull off on to the second note then you can continue with the sweep.

      What is about CAGED Arpeggios ?
      Are there most suitable for Sweep Picking ?

    • @SteveGilson
      @SteveGilson  2 роки тому

      @@guitarvibes1828 Typically what happens as you encounter new shapes is that you find ones that suit you and they become your favorites. This is irrespective of them being CAGED or any other system. You can choose to use consistent patterns which means that they have sometimes difficult stretches, but consistent ways of paying them. I talk about major and minor 2 octave shapes here ua-cam.com/video/-IJfubfva3M/v-deo.html That approach may suit you? There isn't a one size fits all approach.
