So simple but connected the dots in a big way for me! Very helpful. I’ve been practicing the caged boxes and wanted to expand to three notes per string and I’m realizing now that I already know those patterns as well, just linking the boxes with this bridging pattern. Fantastic lesson!!!

Great to hear! Once you see that, you realise how pointless these 3nps vs caged debates really are. Glad I could help.

Absolutely correct. CAGED vs. 3NPS is silly. Learn it all.

Since my first approach to learning the fretboard was caged, and I have that solidly memorized already, this was exactly what I needed to start moving between positions with more fluent ease. It's ingenious in its simplicity. 3nps aways looked complicated and hard to memorize to me, but not anymore. I can't thank you enough!

    With all due respect.
    Thank you...
I have been playing for about a year now, and I shared with you how I had heard of the 3NPS before and thought I was about to have an Aha moment.
    Well I did.
If you know the Root on either the 6, 5, 4 or 3 String, you can establish any position you want and Run on that Track.
It's really a decision of which pattern you want to run on.
I don't think it entertains the Modes. So to have that type of command of the Fret Board is Supior to everything else I have tried to grasp.
Looking foward to Building Chord progressions off of this now.
    It's Over the Top
    Thanks Again

I'm glad I could help. I'd also extend your thoughts to the 2 and 1 strings too, when you're ready. One thing I noticed about myself over the years is that I tend to orientate to a key/ chord on the root strings if I'm playing chords, but tend to use the high 3 strings if I'm playing a lead line. I guess it's because that's where my area of attention is more likely to be.

@@SteveGilson Indeed, I get it. The 1 and 2 strings can be handled quit easily with the 2nd and 3rd patterns on the fly. The 1st pattern is not bad either as long as you have the Root. Also, since the Root is required the Minor scale would only work on the 1st and 3rd pattern.
As I thought about a bit more, the Pentatonic Scale is the same protocal. It cycles the Fret just like the 3NPS, you just have to know the Root and Run.
      Maybe I'll call this.......
Find the Root and Run Method
for the 3NPS and Pentatonic Scales
Still in my head, But the Aha moment is still evolving....
      Ha Ha

@@SteveGilson I think that would be a great video at this point. That's what I am working on now. It is like where a beginner should start.

As one who has been more of a CAGED player I can say that this is exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks for getting me out of the box and playing more "vertically" (and melodically).

    Hey Steve,
    Thanks for the awesome video.
You seem to have broken a barrier for the Pentatonic Box and it has me on the edge of my seat.
My Question is can you demonstrate with a Backing Track and how to create phrases with this Hybrid solution?
I feel a Ahah Moment is about to happen and I would like to see how you improvise over a Track with the Theory.

I was thinking of finishing my mini series on the Altered scale with something like this. The approach would be the same irrespective of the scale I used. but yes there's something I could do with the standard major/ minor scale too.

What I don’t understand is why it’s necessary to learn 3 notes per string when you know caged. It’s the same notes, the aim is to learn one big pattern that repeats infinitely on the guitar neck, hence why is 3 notes per string referred to as being quicker?
Beautiful guitar and love the work on your channel though

It really just brings consistency. There are no strings with 2 notes on them, so every position is picked in the same way and you move between pairs of strings in the same way, when you transition between them. So for example the economy that I talk about in my latest video only works on 3nps scales. The pattern would break down if you tried to do it across a caged position. ua-cam.com/video/phf7jdZWghQ/v-deo.html
