      THIS.
10 years old, hime alone, home VHS that had "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" scribbled in someone's handwriting.
"Hey!", I think, "I like animal movies! I'll see what this is."
Mind blown that there was an ADULT with the same kind of humor as me. I was hooked (like much of pur generation was).

Quotes from that movie are still in my daily vocabulary today. Thank you, Jim Carrey. You are an amazing artist. So far, no one can recreate what you have brought to the table. Mask ('94 and '85 lol), Dumb and Dummer, Number 23, Riddler, Grinch, Cable Guy, Me Myself and Irene, Man on the Moon, Liar Liar, Truman Show, and dozens of others. I grew up watching his standup. I loved him on In Living Color. Fire marshall Bill was unhinged. I so appreciate the work he puts into his craft. I can't do what he does.

The problem is they didn't watch the movie 1st, they read the script and were forming opinions based on that. I've read a lot of scripts that I didn't think would work, but that's why acting is a skill. It can take what looks like hokey words into pure entertainment.
That being said, I'm surprised seasoned critics would jump to such huge conclusions so quickly.

    • @TheDissident77

Because its hilarious and stupid and funny. Not 'good'. Not deep character development or arc, no enveloping story. Just slapstick humor. So no its not a 'good' movie but its just hilarious fun. So they weren't 'wrong' in it being a 'bad' movie, just wrong in just enjoying stupid humor. When he does serious stuff he's very good.

I was in 7th grade when Ace Ventura hit theaters. A day or two after it was released, this 8th grader who was great at impressions was going through every doorway the way Jim did when he was sneaking outside towards the shark tank. Hanging from the door frames, as if he was on a cliffside. He had his hair combed like Ace, and was talking like him all day. I begged my mom to take me to see it that weekend. Still one of my all time favorite films.
