Mesa Boogie 2x12 Rectifier Vs 2x12 Road King Cabinets!

- Mesa/Boogie offers a numer of 2x12 cabinets to fit different tonal needs. In this video we do an A/B comparison of the 2x12 Rectifier and the 2x12 Road King. The Rectifier is a closed back cabinet cabinet with two Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. The Road King has a Vintage 30 and a Celestion C90. The Vintage 30 half is completely sealed whereas the C90 half is open back.
These cabinets have completely different sounds! We used a Royer R-121 several feet back from the cabinet, pointed directly at the center of each cabinet (it looks off to one side due to the camera angle).
Hopefully this video helps you decide which speaker cabinet will be best for you. For more information, please visit our website at:

I saw your review and I bought a Road King 12*2 cabinet in 2014 and still use it with great care.
This year is 2022.
Thank you very much.
Clean - Road King
Crunch and Channel 3 - Rectifier
Yeah, exactly what I was thinking.
EXACTLY!
Totally agree
Your comparisons are always great and useful. Thumbs up for this guy!
I own the rectifier, I bought it with my 2004 Mrsa Single Rectifier Solo 50 watt head instead of buying a 4x12 of lesser quality because it was the best sounding of the group. They're oversised 2x12s and well worth the $600 they were selling for new. Thank for posting this video.
It felt more relaxing to listen to the rectifier cab for me. I feel like having both at the same time would be great.
I honestly think the Rectifier cab just sounds so much better. The Road King just sounds hollow, which while it works pretty well for cleans, it just sounds bad for distorted tones.
Very Very good video! I will show this to my students to make them aware of cabinet choice
I own the Road King cab and I find it's less harsh and maintains more clarity at higher volumes due to it's more articulate mid range. I also can add gain and not have to worry about things getting too muddy. But if you like that scooped tone with high end sizzle the Rectifier 2x12 cab is more suitable.
awesome demo. They both sound great.
Great comparison. Road King has much more shimmer and less compression on the clean channel, but the rectifier cab works so great for the dirty tones. Great playing from Dream Theater Metropolis!
I really enjoyed this comparison. Definitely confirms my dislike for open back designs. I've been using a Bogner closed-back 2x12 loaded with C90's along with a Recto 2x12 and the results have been spectacular! The two speakers work super well together.
Rectifier FTW.
You have the best demos and playing out there. Love your version of Macca's Taxman solo... sweet!!!
I have a Mesa F50 combo. I love it, but the gain channel through the open back combo is a tad unfocused. I am interested in the RK 212. Do you think that, with my combo, it still might be too heavy on the open back sound? Any input would be welcome. Thanks!
I think I like the road king a bit better. Its a more natural sound to my ears not as buzzy
hey Don,
Another outstanding video! great work. I was wondering if you could tell me what software package you use to put your videos together?
Thanks
Great review!
@haggertysmusic what side of the mesa cab you were using? The c 90 or the vintage 30?
@haggertysmusic Hey, would you say the recto 2x12 is more present in the mids than the 4x12? it seems to be that way in this vid, but i'm thinking that could be the mark V at work...
I'm just curious because i'm wanting to pair it with a Dual Rectifier(2010)
Great playing :)
C90/V30 C90 V30 (personal experience, own both, both UK made)
Btw, did you guys record with the cabs to the wall? Open back should stand well clear of any walls
@22dgod It depends on which 4x12 you're comparing it to. The Stiletto 4x12 is the most present in the mids with the smoothest highs. The 2x12 leans a bit more towards the 4x12 Rectifier which has some scooped mids and brighter highs.
Hi! Great reviews. What cab do you recommend more - traditional 4x12 slant or straight or maybe road king?
Great work guys! How about a 2x12 recto vs the PRS deep 2x12????
Rectifier sounds more clear, and snappy in this video. Though, the lead sounds on the RK cab sounds really juicy!
That orange mesa cab is a sexy beast!
To everyone... I apologize for the confusion. This is the third time we uploaded the video, and this time it is RIGHT!!! The first time didn't have labels on the screen for the cabs, and the second time, we had the cabs listed wrong. SORRY! The orange cab is the 2x12 Rectifier and the black one is the 2x12 Road King. This one's up to stay!
this is great work, thanks :)
@AlvisLiquid it has the same speaker, but we dont know if he was using the vintage 30 or the c 90
Road King for sure.
Rectifier with Suhr! :-)
I've have another idea for you. How about the new PRS deep 2x12 against a Recto 2x12?
Which side of the road king cab was used to film this demo? the open back side or the closed back side?
I hope you can do Mesa Rectifier 2x12 vs Roadster 2x12!
Hey Don, Can you please please do an in depth review of the Mesa Road King.... It's one of the best and most versatile amps ever (Please give me an answer
And can I achieve a Mark IIC+ like tone from a Road King ?????
Thanks
Yash
Amazing work guys! How about a Mesa Boogie Rectifier 2x12 Vertical Slant vs the Mesa Boogie Rectifier 2x12 Horizontal Cabs???? Thank you again!
Hey can you mic the Road King with more of a blend of the speakers rather than a focus on the C90?
Hi, i have a M.Boogie Express 5:25 Head. Which m.boogie cab would best complement the head. I know theres a matching cab, but is that cab the best for it? I dont mind getting a different model m.boogie cab for my 5:25, just want to know which one.
Road King, kind of produces what I expected of it, the directional bass & mids of the closed back with the ambience of the mids & highs of the open back. That said you're getting the tighter & punchier bass of the closed back, but it's blended with the looser & dispersed bass of the open back. I think this would be better served the way I implemented it as 2 separate cabs. For stage the closed back is going to project directly into the rest of the room and the open back can be used more like a booster cabinet in the rest of the room to fill it ambiently. I accidentally stumbled across the hybrid dual cab system modding an open back combo to be used as a combo while plugging out & into a closed back cabinet. Stacked on top of each other and the bottom rumbles bass & mids like a closed back would, while the upper open back is mids & highs, with the bass going out the back. Has it's own unique sound. With either you're at the mercy of how well matched the open back & closed back speakers are implemented. Mine are no name brand 60W speakers in each open & closed back. The combo is speced as 60W max, don't know if that's 4/8/16 Ohm impedance though for max output. The closed back is an 8 Ohm speaker for 60W max. I figure the combo's speaker is 60W @ 4 Ohms, so it's 30W @ 8 Ohm and 15W @ 16 Ohm. That probably approximates +/- the Road King's pairing of a Vintage 30W for the closed back side with a C90 for the open back side ?
By comparison I'm not crazy about the sizzly high end of the Rectifier. The Road King really sounds like it can breathe, I'm taken aback by how much I prefer the it. Which is a real shame because I already own the Rectifier. I wonder if anyone wants to trade.
I will say though that I like the Rectifier 2x12 more than a lot of closed back cabs, including Orange.
Rectifier for Ch. 3, Road King for Ch. 1, either for Ch 2. Overall better sound is the rectifier because it did cleans better than the Road King did high-gain.
DREAM THEATER! :D
Can Mesa cabinets (2X12) match a bluesy head (Ibanez TSA15H) ?
Road King for clean
Rectumfire for crunch
Who cares? Dude seriously busted out Dream Theater riffs.
Was that a Dream Theater riff at the end? Pretty cool cabs too.
Key note: if you mic closer to v30 rather than c90 of the roadking cab it would sound closer to the rectifier cab. I assume this dude is micing c90 more as it sounds dark in crunch. Nice playing and good review though.
World of difference! Rectifier sounds WAY better. More clear highs and less "muffled". I am a trebley guy though haha
Sisters by Steve Vai. Thanks for watching.
I think I like the orange one a bit more overall :)
Recto have 2x16 Ohm and RK 2x8 Ohm speaker. How did you use impedance on cabs and amp?I suppose rect. cab.8 Ohm->8 Ohm amp and RK 2 cables 2x8 Ohm.....If RK goes 4->4 Ohm its slight difrent sound and feel IMO.Btw I have RK 2x12...great cab!
The road king sounds tinny when you directly compare. But I think it would sound better in a mix and cut through a crap load more.
Hey thank you for all your wonderful videos!
Beats mesa's vids...
I think a lot of us are hoping you could do a roadster head review in the future!
hey don, even if you don't announce before each video that "this is don here", we already know it's you ;))
great demos though ;)
Yes. Mesa Boogie ecstacy.
you uploaded the same video the 3rd time? o.O or is it my youtube subscription box screwing with me
I feel like dual mics on both speakers simultaneously - for both cabs - wudda been better … but thx was helpful as is also
Roadking dark rock sound !!and Recti cab brighter than .....
Road King ftw.
P.S. Keep use the Mark V! And maybe even a try a 4x10.
V30 Rectifier cab for me!
i have to give the prize to the recto cab. though id like to see what sounds better if we arent using a mesa head, the result may be different. but for mesas, id stick to the recto cab.
Recto is more balanced, but the Roadking should cut through better with the extra mids.
Without a doubt, the Roadking Cab will sit better in the mix... you don't get the internal low freq reflections that the recto cab has because of the Roadking Cab's open back. Thus, the mids are more emphasized which is generally a better option for a guitar signal, especially in a live setting. Yet, I know that most guitar players are too stupid to differentiate between "it sounds good when I play alone" and "it still cuts through when I'm playing in my band".
Aha. Do you know EQ ? Just try to sound the best alone, then EQ in the mix.
My experience is that mostly those sounds that sound shitty by themselves cut through in the mix... take for example that Mark Tremonti sound. Sounds great when you're alone in the rehearsal room. But it takes a lot of work for the foh-engineer to make it shine in a transparent way... too much distortion, too much bass, not enough mids. Might work in the studio but definitely not live.
Road King does have a hollow sound, but to me the Rectifier, which I wanted to like, sounds fizzy and way too thin.
clean like better recto bigger range more balanced and no jumping out agressive highs. distortion for me the road better becouse the tone alot darker,:)
P.S. With the Mark V of course. Lol!
What's the clean lick?
Nathan Brown Steve Vai - Sisters
Rectifier clear n crisp.. Roadking boomy n muddy
I want a mesa 2x12 that is that same color.
Wow they both have strengths and relative weaknesses with no clear winner....
0:47 oh hell naw
Mesa è sicuramente migliore!
Had the Road King.. sucked IMHO.. never buying into it ever again, go with the Rectifier, much cleaner tones unless you're fucking gay lame weed high..
You're an idiot
John Doe sounds pretty good here
lol...
black cab. dude's playing is a bit weak. :)
so which one is better? It seems like in the clean the rec cab was warmer and in the distortion it was brighter... wish i could try this combination in person
