  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. James Altucher is now considered to be a reknowned author and serial entrepreneur, but in this brutally honest talk, injected with outrageous humor, he reveals how at one point failure led him to consider suicide, and how he turned his life around by following five key practices.
Improve your physical health (focus on exercise and diet), improve your emotional health (be around people that you love and trust), improve you spiritual health (always expressing gratitude), capture your brilliance (write down ten ideas every day), and finally, give without expectation (give your ideas away).
“If you don’t make the choices in your own life, then someone else is going to end up making them for you, and it won’t be good.”
James Altucher is a successful entrepreneur, chess master, investor and writer. He is the author of the WSJ and Amazon Best-Sellers “Choose Yourself” and “The Power Of No” as well as ten other books. He has started and run more than 20 companies, and sold several of those businesses for large exits and failed miserably at all the rest. His book “Choose Yourself” explains how he rose from repeated failure to find success. He has also run venture capital funds, hedge funds, is an active angel investor, and currently sits on the boards of several companies.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    *Reworded Summary:*
four things that either make you go up or down.
    ○ *Health* eat, sleep, movement, away from the computer as much as possible, and laugh
    ○ *Emotional health* be around people who loves you and you love them and trust, and stay away from people who degrade your ideas
    ○ *Gratitude* "complaining is draining," turn complains into a gratitude simply by looking at it from different perspective
    ○ *Write down ten ideas everyday* trains your idea muscle, you will become an idea machine and your life would change every six months
☺ *Give ideas and share them* spread your ideas, come up with ten different ideas for ten companies or ten people and share them

Thank you for your summary, it really nails in the points for those who don't have all the time (nor stamina) to watch a 10+ minute video out of... maybe someone can make a nice living out of summarizing key takeaways for people!

What he said about life insurance being more valuable than life was true for my father. Please don't give up on your life. My dad could have left me with billions of dollars and it wouldn't fill the hole in my heart from his leaving. Thankfully he didn't. He's doing better now. If you don't feel like improving, at least enjoy what you /can/ do.

I could not fathom how to follow Altucher's advice for a while because I was so depressed & anxious that I had very little mental energy and even less abandon -- I was hypervigilant, sitting there inside all the bad thoughts because the anxious mind believes it's risky not to. So I found one activity that involves body, mind, heart & spirit that I could manage to do once a day: singing. I am not good at singing, but I can do it for a few minutes every day even when I'm feeling bad, and it uses the body and mind, invigorates the heart, and gives the spirit a medium for expression.

That's interesting, Esther Rosenow . There was a period about a year ago that I found singing to be very useful for me, particularly before i had to be very social - like in a talk or a meeting.

I can empathise. Maybe try with less. Just one thing a day. Thats already an improvement and gradually add one more when you can. But in yoir condition doing even one thing a day is a lot...and every small counts! Hugs and do not give up!

James Altucher's 5 Keys to overcoming depression and living a life of meaning:
    1. Health & Fitness
    2. Loving Relationships
    3. "Creative Gratitude" find un-obvious things to be grateful for. His version of Spirituality
    4. Exercise your idea muscle. Give yourself permission to come up with bad ideas and write down at least 10 new ideas every day.
    5. Share your ideas with others (people, business, organizations, for free. Gives your ideas away with no expectation of a return. This will help network and lead to many opportunities in the future.

I know you at one point wanted/want to be a comedian, but this I'd say is better because you made people laugh while driving home life changing messages. Great job James you did awesome.

I agree, Vlad. Between this and some other talks and writings I consider myself having checked that box. BUT, the one difference is that for a stand-up comedian they are specifically there for one purpose: to laugh, whereas here this was a side effect.

Saw this video today. It's 2020 and I needed some inspiration. I laughed, thinking about how we're all trying to find a path in our life and how to go about doing that. For the past week, "Intention" came to mind. Learning to live with intention is important and that's why it's important to have a path for yourself so that others can't make decisions for you. I started a journal about MY intentions, like spend an hour drawing or painting, being creative. Another one: Set a small space for spiritual reading, praying and meditation. Write down your core beliefs about yourself and journal about them. Also, just be kind and compassionate with yourself. Don't try to be right about anything, just do what is the best for you that you can and with absolute intention, be okay with it. Blessings to all

Great James, congratulations for this talk. I've been reading your articles and listening to your podcast for almost a year and this is the first time I watch you, it's kind of funny, I've read and hear your ideas and stories many times that I think of you as an old buddy or friend, but watching you in this video is a bonus cause it gives a face, a body, not just the picture in your blog. thanks for sharing. Saludos from Mexico.

I wish that it was possible for me to solely do business with people I love and trust, but it just doesn't allow me to help the people I want to help...Perhaps there is another way to think about, which is to learn to love people for who they are rather than what they can do for us, and allow them to challenge us into considering alternative perspectives. Some of my greatest adventures came from my discomfort. I've also found that "love + trust" isn't always simple math. Thought provoking, anyway.
