Unbelievable. The most familiar place from my childhood--45th and Broadway--is completely unrecognizable in this video.

When I was 11, our car collided with another car at 68th and Broadway. I don't remember the accident, but I learned later that I was thrown from our car into the middle of Broadway. The last thing I remember before the accident was sitting in the backseat of our car reading something. When I woke up three days later, I was in a hospital in downtown Gary at least five or six miles away. Other than having 27 stitches in three places, including ten on the back of my head, and aching all over, I was in pretty good shape. A few days later, I was allowed to go home. (This accident was an important event in my childhood and it helps me to write it down as well as I remember it. I'm sorry if it upsets anyone. Since I don't remember the accident and I ended up with only some stitches and no lasting impairment, I can be fairly unemotional in going through the events of a brief but important part of my life.
Forty-fifth and Broadway is just one of the familiar places of my childhood, but it is certainly a place I remember well, even if it is unrecognizable to me in this video. I remember many, many things from Glen Park and the rest of Gary and the nearby cities and towns. I don't think the accident has taken away really any of my memories of my childhood in Northwest Indiana. I now live near the West Coast of the United States.

It’s definitely crazy and that is a wild story and I appreciate you taking the time to share your memories and thought Bobby hope to hear more from you soon. I hope that you are enjoying the channel. I do really appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts, I enjoyed reading this very much. It sounds like a lot of my crazy stories. I’m just glad we grew up in a time where things were so much different and yes as far as 45th Ave. and Broadway nothing looks the same all trashed out now it’s pretty depressing just looking at it sometimes.

@@TheSteelCityStorm I really appreciate that you responded to my comment. The image of 45th and Broadway is so clear in my mind. At the northwest corner of the intersection was a brick Rexall Drug Store that I had been in so many times. I really couldn't believe it when I could see that the video was at 45th Avenue and Broadway. My house was a half block south of 45th Avenue just twelve blocks west of that intersection, and I remember our car turning north there hundreds of times during my years in Gary.
My father worked 41 years in the U.S. Steel mill, and, no matter how dirty and dangerous and how bad for your health the mill could be, he still was driving a car at the age of 88. A sudden heart attack finally got him.
It was really good for me to go over the time of that accident in my mind. I am very fortunate to have had no lasting physical problems because of the accident.
Gary was a good place to grow up in at that time, but it was just a big factory town based primarily on steel. Various businesses providing goods and services to workers in the mill and their families were an important part of the economy of the city, but the millworkers' pay was too great a source of income for those stores. When the mill went down, the stores went down hard.
Another problem of life in Gary was that millworkers came from all over the country, from all over the world. The city was a giant mix of nationalities, cultures, and even languages that didn't blend well at all. After leaving Gary I met people who had come from small towns and who, whether they liked it or not, were raised by the whole town. Gary was nothing like that. We hardly knew our neighbors, much less the people we saw on the streets. When I moved to Terre Haute at age 17, I was amazed by the friendliness of the people there even though Terre Haute had had economic problems for a long time.
My sister, eight years older than me, grew up in Gary but now lives in the small city of Valparaiso, always called Valpo in Gary, which is maybe 30 miles southeast of Gary. On the phone, she has told me several times that Glen Park is very different now, but I never thought it would be so different that NOTHING on Broadway was familiar to me in this video.
I could tell you more stories about Gary than you would ever want to hear, but I'll save them for some other time.

Thanks for an amazing ride. I cannot believe the old Harvey's Five and Dime on Broadway just past Ridge Rd. stands let alone the sign is almost intact after so many years. C&L auto parts on 41st is historic by now and Piatak Meats is a name I had long forgotten. I remember that marque from long ago with the cow on top. I see it said "closing sale". This video is 18 months old now so even those things may have changed.

Hey storm or anybody else up there, when you turned on 23rd avenue it looks like you took off from the corner of the Jackson 5 house but I didn't see it on the left, but when you got to the first Street to through was Jefferson Street the house on the south east corner with the yellow trim and looks like some kind of dark red, that was William Marshalls mother's house, we are Marshall is the guy who was a famous Shakespearean actor who might be best on for Blacula the movie and he also had a recurring role on Star trek as a professor / inventor who created a machine that was meant to guard but went haywire and out-of-control, before my grandfather moved to 26th and Washington he rented a room from Miss Marshall, and he used to play with young William Marshall on his knee, look up William Marshall plays on Star trek the original series of course, so when I was a little boy in 1968 and he told me who William Marshall was and how he knew him I said to myself this is the first time my grandfather lied to me,I simply didn't believe it either this guy is famous on TV he was born just a few blocks away so I remember asking the school it was shy about doing it for fear of embarrassment, and damned if she didn't tell me was true, one of my first introductions to, by the way if my grandfather ever lied to me I never knew it but I never doubted him afterwards since, there you have it one bit of trivia! I used to be a sign in that front yard for years, because it was dubbed a historic place.
