I can tell lots about you as a person just from these videos. Much respect for your ability to teach...words and actions, video production, ...I am positive that you are the same first-class person as you are an instructor. The profound effect that you have on all of our games is amazing, and how many golfers are we talking about? Literally thousands upon thousands worldwide, so thank you for sharing your expertise. This video, an important component of the short game, is a tremendous example of your work...now, we just have to practice. Cheers!
Best chipping video on UA-cam! I play on a links course with hugely tight lies everywhere. I was struggling badly chunking everything which was ruining my game. This technique as simple as it seems has totally changed everything! Suddenly I’m able to cosy the ball up to the flag for one putts no problem! Gone are my fears of chipping over bunkers, tight lies etc, I am now a chipping god! Haha. Even completely bare lies with no grass at all are no problem. I can’t thank you enough!
Finally, after watching MANY videos regarding short game, I found one that works and makes perfect sense to me. Thank you Danny! Played yesterday, chipped MUCH better, hit a few short, hit a few long, no chunks, no blades..........and chipped one IN.
Danny you have just resurrected my golf. Just back after a long lay-off and of course struggling with the short game. Just tried this and it reminded me to KISS (keep it simple stupid). So much better. Got rid of that clutter in my head. You are such a good teacher. Easy to listen to and a great inspiration for all of us. Went out from 2.7 to 13.3 during lay-off. Looking forward to now getting back down to single figures thanks to you!
I am an avid searcher for golf instruction on UA-cam. I just want to say that your tips and instruction are definitely some of the best there is. Keep up the good work and thanks foer all you help!
I just recently got back into golfing again after about a 10 year hiatus. I have been really struggling with chipping and pitching. The few tips pointed out here have helped me immensely! I've already chipped a couple in and and have been able to get up and down, having an opportunity to save a stroke. Thanks Danny!
WOW! Great video! I feel like you answered a lot of questions I have had with other chipping videos! I feel like this is the BEST instructional video out there! Keep up the good work!
Excellent video. After watching Fred Shoemaker doing a clinic on club throwing, I realised that I had been hanging on to my club like grim death. By relaxing and becoming target orientated I put 20 yards and 40 onto my drives. Keep the videos coming great content and simply explained.
Superb video, love the different views, really helps illustrate how the technique works. Watching the ball climb the club face in slow motion was a revelation!
Hey Danny, this is a really great video and super easy to understand. I started on the Mickelson "hinge & hold" technique and videos, and was using that for the last year. But your technique in this video really simplifies it and allows me to be much more consistent with either really flat surfaces or wet surfaces where you can chunk it if your shot is not perfect. You're the best, man!
Thank you and sorry I missed this comment. I think Phil Mickleson is brilliant I just think the hinge and hold method has to be executed perfectly to be affective.
David Morgan hope fully the videos will be the next best thing. I’ve got a membership site I’m launching at the end of the year so hope this will help add an even more personal touch to the coaching videos
Thanks Danny, you getting my handicap down! That makes sense something I have a difficulty with as a 5 handicapper 58 years old, I draw or block the ball, whatever I do Im struggling to get the club on the outside to inside. I also tend to bump hips forward on the first movement, which might be causing it. Have you any videos getting the club from out to in, with keeping hands close to body, ie not coming over the top? Thanks so much!!
Great clear video as usual. Was wondering what club you advise for these type of shots? and if you don't really open your body up, how does opening the left foot impact on the shots? Thanks again and keep up the great work.
it went great. i practiced on the carpet in our den. just some practice on how to use the bounce of the club will build confidence and it will sure help my game. thank u very much.
Very good instruction here. I’m a decent golfer but sadly, a horrific chipper. I tend to thin the ball on my chips and embarrassingly watch my ball scream across the green. I hate it and I’ve done a million things to try to fix it. When the weather warms up (freezing northeast US weather sucks!), I will give this a go. Praying 🙏🙏🙏
Love the way Danny keeps things positive and simple. My chipping has really improved this year, but I struggle when the fringe is a bit thicker. Can you help me with that?
Hi Danny. I'm quite confident on my chips - It's the only shot I can practice in the garden! However, when I end up on a tight lie on the course (plenty of grass at home!) it never works well. Looking forward to trying this technique.
OK, thanks. Not playing much. When I do I'm striking better but can't score for toffee. Got 5 rounds booked in Devon/Cornwall in next couple of weeks - see what happens :)
I have watched a lot of vlogs on chipping and this is by far the best one I have seen. I have been taught to keep a glove under my left armpit when I practice to keep the club close into my body and induce turn. I think Justin Rose tucks his shirt sleeve under his armpit to do the same. Do you recommend this as a training aide? Thank you.
it certainly helps keep the lead arm connected, not sure how much benefit it has with getting the correct ground contact but with any drill try iy out and if you find it helps stick with it. If it doesn't discard it
Great Vlog Danny and most helpful. You explain everything so well. A pity you are not here in Wellington NZ!!! Have you ever explained in a Vlog the best grip to use and how tight the club should be held? I have seen instructions from Brian Spark and Julian Mellor and I wonder if you agree with them? Peter Fryer.
Great. Very fluent and easy. Works well. Do we turn the body at all or is it just the pendulum movement and you turn just enough to see the ball after impact?
Great. I play all chips similar to this, that is I hold the club even more upright and play it with the toe, with putting grip, using a relaxed swing similar to a put with some hinge as you describe it. And I play most of the time with iron8/9/PW gripping down a bit. This way I have reduced mishits dramatically. I see most high and mid HC players struggling with SW. Different story for good players of course. Cheers, Peter
Morning danny, hope your enjoying your holiday. Dan I really need to improve my chipping as it's where a majority of my shots are gained. But it's mainly my closer chips whether it be on elevated greens, over bunkers etc. I just seem to lose confidence when I get in close. Could you do a video over a bunker etc and advise your club choice and why. Appreciate it.
very helpful and corrects my set up. Do you recomend using the same club on all of your chips regardless of distance from pin and adjusting distance with the swing action?
David Zoller great question, no right answer here. Some use the same club often and others like to change a lot. The key is find out what you personally prefer
I recently played with a scratch golfer. He saw me struggling around the greens, either hitting fat or thins shots. He said the same thing you are saying. He said take some practice swings brushing the grass and use the bounce of the wedge. My distance control was better and I actually put some spin on the ball. It really works and I have more confidence now. My question is; is this how you put spin on approach shots with lower lofted clubs. I couldn't believe how this golfer can dial in distances. I always heard to hit down on the ball. That's not using the bounce of the club, right?
Thanks for yet another great vlog, you are such a good teacher. How come you know exactly what problems I have, almost any of your vlogs is relevant to my game :) Ulf Aronson - Sweden
It all looks so simple when I see you swinging but when I try this I am very often topping the ball. I seem not to obtain the bounce you have as with the bounce my club face is cutting/topping the ball. Hope you understand what I am trying to explain as my English is more translated French 😰 I agree though that your videos are a pleasure to look at and of great advice, thank you Danny. Best regards Charles from Royal Antwerp Golf Club (by the way my hcp is 4,9 and I am 65)
HI Danny, very informative video. Do you have a video that addresses chipping from around the green ie, uphill, downhill and second cut or third cut rough? thanks very much.
Danny, thanks for your prompt reply. Since I always have doubt about what club to use and ball positions from green side fringe areas, I really look forward to your new lesson. I have one question regarding a previous lesson regarding set up for senior golfers. In the lesson you suggest dropping the back foot (right) and opening the foot slightly in order to achieve better hip turn and power storage on the back swing. I've had a left knee replacement and I was wondering if having the left foot "closed" would put an undue amount of pressure on the left knee. Trust me, I am certainly not looking for you to give medical advice, but rather just your thoughts on the matter. Thanks very much, and please keep up the good work!
Hi Danny. On a bare lie 50yds from the green I assume you would do a pitch? When would a chipping shot come into play and which club would you recommend?what club would you recommend
Bill Bond, any shot that spends most of its time on the ground is a chip. I recommend have a favourite chipping club like a PW and then add to it once you’ve mastered it
Danny, thanks for the instructions. I assume (including prior instructions for chipping in thick grass), we are swinging parallel to the stance with the club face aimed at the intended target (landing area)?
Great video. Thanks Danny and so simply explained. One question. Is it chip to half away and let it run halfway or is two thirds chip and one third run?
Hi Danny, another great video. Do you use this only for tight lies? I’ve been using your technique “scrape the leading edge” to good effect since you published that vlog about 10 months ago (3 key steps). Keep them coming. Bill
Nice vlog Danny. I've started to use a 22 hybrid for these hot weather situations. Seems to work well on my course in Kent. What are your views on this? Thanks
Danny: Great video instruction! Thanks. Two questions: 1) Do you use this same technique if chipping just off the green? Are you using a lob wedge (60 degrees) to do your chipping?
Another great lesson and review Danny well done or brilliant as they say in the UK. One question how much bounce do you recommend from a tight lie like you were showing and want do you do differently if your hitting the same shot from an inch or two of rough? Merry Christmas!
Hi Danny. I really enjoy watching your videos it's helped my chipping game a lot. My only problem is that when I tee off some of my tee shots are going to the right. Can you help me out with this and fix it for me?
Danny, love your instructions. I get the point with your chipping instruction (and it works!). However, how would you posirton this technique against the “hinge and hold” chipping (& short pitching) technique Philp Mickleson explains in his shortgame secrets? I.e. Are both techs interchangable, Is your technique less risky or is it just a matter of personal preference. Phil is very explicit/firm about using the hinge and hold.....
Danny, Great video. Is the distance the ball goes the result of just gravity, or are you helping a bit? Thanks, I learn much from your work. From Naples, Florida
Danny, I'm curious - is your chip shot driven mostly with your shoulders or arms/hands? Or do you just swing it back & through, without particular focus on either? Thanks for the videos!
Thank you for the quick reply. About 5 years ago, in an attempt to gain more consistency in my short game, I went to a shoulder-driven swing. I'm in an awful slump now & longing for the old swing -- but I can't get that feel back. However, based on your answer, I'll stick it out & put more work into it. Thanks, again.
Danny, I used to be an excellent chipper. However, over the past couple of years, I seem to have gotten the yips and end up hitting the ground 6 inches behind the ball when I chip. I've seen your video and it all makes perfect sense, but I'm still hitting the ground behind the ball. Is there anything you can suggest to cure this issue? Thanks in advance.
Tiger Woods uses this chip shot on the 14 hole on Bristish Open today !! 😍 Another player did it yesterday !! It works well and I love it. Will practice and let you know the feedback .Hope the green keeper would not be around 😅
Terrific reminder that we often make golf more complicated than the basic physics requires. Standing close to the ball & vertical lets it feel very natural for the club head to fall in like a pendulum with minimal user influence. On a different point, you seem to have a little forward press to initiate the backswing. I have found it very helpful to do this. Maybe you could comment on why you do this and be explicit about it in your next chipping video. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I noticed that when I stand upright and have the shaft vertical using my sand wedge, when the clubs rests on the ground at address it is on the toe. I am a 5'10" male. Watching your video, it appears at rest, your club rests on the ground more naturally. I have tried choking well down on the grip but still the club seems to rest too much on the toe. Am I using the wrong club? Your thoughts please.
I got to 5 h cap and I was very poor chipper ,missed green was guaranteed bogey or worse unless could putt ,so I had to hit greens but eventually the poor chipping got worse ,I was terrified over a basic chip and if was over a bunker or water I was totally goosed , this then affects your whole game eventually as puts your driving and irons under too much pressure so I gave up golf ,was no longer fun , I was humiliated on the course a lot which was hard to take ,even if I was an average chipper could have gone to really low h cap , I watch golf on telly and get anxious watching an awkward chip ffs !! nice video tho Danny
Alan McCarthy try one handed chipping Alan, I’m serious it really works. Allow the club head to swing and do the work and see what happens. A recent European tour professional chips one handed because he has simply can’t with two. He just yips
I like it and it works. This is terrific to get the ball rolling and on line. Except on soggy courses. Hard to really hit the ball when you're that close. Came up short often. But hey I need another solution. Which is what makes this game so damn hard.
Hi Danny, i have a 54 degree with 14 degrees of bounce, using your method would to much bounce(for tight lies) bring the leading edge into play?(Is 14 degrees to much off tight lies?) Btw i'm assuming you have standard 10 degrees of bounce on your 56? Also would you call this method similar to Steve Stricker, Jason Day's etc method? In essence you're saying adopt a shallow AoA thus making contact with the sole of the club not the leading edge. I've noticed that some 56/60 wedges go as low as 4 degrees of bounce and up to 14 degrees, could you explain where each type might be best used? (perhaps a video), could you explain .Thanks... Subbed.

Danny, your style of teaching is excellent. You have become the only UA-cam instructor I watch. Thank you.
Your instructional videos are truly wonderful. You are a very gifted teacher. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome! Really appreciate the support
Watched this last night. Was playing this morning and tried out the technique. Best I've chipped in ages and shot 7 shots below my handicap.
Conall Canavan, wow, that’s great to hear!! Well done
What’s your handicap ?
How to boil eggs

Thanks for the feedback Simon, keeping it simple is a great way to make progress in this game
Thx! You’ve helped my game tremendously.
WOW! Great video! I feel like you answered a lot of questions I have had with other chipping videos! I feel like this is the BEST instructional video out there! Keep up the good work!
Jason Grosze, great to hear Jason, thanks for sharing
You’re such a good teacher Danny. Thank you

Excellent video. After watching Fred Shoemaker doing a clinic on club throwing, I realised that I had been hanging on to my club like grim death. By relaxing and becoming target orientated I put 20 yards and 40 onto my drives. Keep the videos coming great content and simply explained.
Fred Shoemaker does some great stuff
Superb video, love the different views, really helps illustrate how the technique works. Watching the ball climb the club face in slow motion was a revelation!
Simon White, thanks for the feedback Simon
I agree with Simon: I love the close ups of the shot from various angles/slo mo near the end of your lesson…really helpful!
First time I have seen one of your sessions very impressed makes a lot of sense

Also the latest video will also really help
My takeaway from Danny is so simple. Less is more!!
So smooth! Why does that look easy?! Great tip. Will try it. My chips are always a struggle.
Practice using the bounce it really works
You're really a great teacher! Thanks, Danny!
Jan Mulder, appreciate all the feedback Jan
Very well demonstrated...the best tip so far for crisp chipping.Kudos!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting
Changed my chipping for the better instantly, brilliant!
That’s awesome to hear thanks for letting me know
Great clear video as usual. Was wondering what club you advise for these type of shots? and if you don't really open your body up, how does opening the left foot impact on the shots? Thanks again and keep up the great work.
Wonderful teaching video for a very difficult shot, thanks
Thanks so much Joseph, really appreciate the feedback
Thanks for this Danny. Just lately I’ve been shanking my chips and half pitch shots. I’ve been at my wits end. Hoping this will help.
Hope so James, keep me posted
Danny, great lesson ….. I enjoy all the times the way how you teach… simple and straight forward….thanks 🙏 😊
Thanks so much 🙏
thank u. at long last someone knows how to teach me how to chip. u r the best.

Hi Danny. I'm quite confident on my chips - It's the only shot I can practice in the garden! However, when I end up on a tight lie on the course (plenty of grass at home!) it never works well. Looking forward to trying this technique.
PS - is it still the case that a SW is designed differently so maybe I should use a PW for this?
Richard Hinds, I’m using a Sw here, hope your golf is good
OK, thanks. Not playing much. When I do I'm striking better but can't score for toffee. Got 5 rounds booked in Devon/Cornwall in next couple of weeks - see what happens :)

Yes this was a 56 degree sand wedge
Another great video…very informative. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it John
Your technique looks very easy. I'll try it tomorrow and get back to you. On close observance I noticed you do use a slight forward press.
I do, its my personal trigger to start things off
Great Vlog Danny and most helpful. You explain everything so well. A pity you are not here in Wellington NZ!!! Have you ever explained in a Vlog the best grip to use and how tight the club should be held? I have seen instructions from Brian Spark and Julian Mellor and I wonder if you agree with them? I'd have thinned everyone one of those !!! Thx for the lesson.... I'll try that tomorrow.

very helpful and corrects my set up. Do you recomend using the same club on all of your chips regardless of distance from pin and adjusting distance with the swing action?
David Zoller great question, no right answer here. Some use the same club often and others like to change a lot. The key is find out what you personally prefer
Great video. I might've missed it but I didn't hear anything about weight distribution.
I try not to think about it as your body will find the necessary balance needed to achieve the desired strike
@@DanielMaude That makes sense. Thanks!
Great video! Do you recommend starting with a slightly open face to guarantee the leading edge doesn’t dig?
Sometimes yes 👍
I know how to chip now !!! Thanks a lot Danny
Danny another great session, this has given me more confidence to chip, what iron were you using at that range?
Alvin Budd, this is a 56 degree wedge
Do you have a go to club for most chipping situations? Awesome cideo and instruction...

Very different, you use the bounce with the wedge as you lay it back for loft. For your irons you deloft the club for power

Ulf Aronson, funny, I coach a lot of clients
Hi Danny you make it reslly easy thank you do you allways use a sand wedge for chipping (for the bounce) can you chip with other clubs?
I like to get really good with one club before I consider any other 👍

Hi Danny, another great video. Do you use this only for tight lies? I’ve been using your technique “scrape the leading edge” to good effect since you published that vlog about 10 months ago (3 key steps). Keep them coming. Bill
Bill Stubbins, thanks Bill, this is the technique to use on most short chip shots around the green
Danny I'm a new subscriber. Love your work. Do you have any material on chipping into the grain?
Most of my short game videos will help, the key is to keep the leading edge off the ground and the bounce on it
Hi Danny enjoy your videos, what weight set up would you use with this technique?
I’m pretty even with this
Nice vlog Danny.
I've started to use a 22 hybrid for these hot weather situations.
Seems to work well on my course in Kent.
What are your views on this?
Thanks
David Leigh, it’s ok when you want the ball to run out but if you need to pop it in the air with some check you will need more loft
Danny: Great video instruction! Thanks. Two questions: 1) Do you use this same technique if chipping just off the green? Are you using a lob wedge (60 degrees) to do your chipping?
Dennis Knepper, absolutely, this is what it’s meant for...
I’d say 56 degree, 60 degree too risky? Or is it less? If u use 56 degree and have club more upright...toe is only part of club which brushes ground?
Great video, but a question. If the lie is that tight and you are in front of the green, aren't you likely to be more accurate putting?
great question, this drill is for those tight lies maybe on on bare lies where you have rough ground to go over
Another great lesson and review Danny well done or brilliant as they say in the UK. One question how much bounce do you recommend from a tight lie like you were showing and want do you do differently if your hitting the same shot from an inch or two of rough? Merry Christmas!
I’m using 12 degree here
What kind of bounce do you recommend for a wedge for this kind of shot
romgoh, I’m using 10 degrees here
Hi Danny. I really enjoy watching your videos it's helped my chipping game a lot.
My only problem is that when I tee off some of my tee shots are going to the right.
Can you help me out with this and fix it for me?
Sounds like your club path may be a little to the right
@@DanielMaude does that mean that I could be coming down on the ball?
Danny, love your instructions. I get the point with your chipping instruction (and it works!). However, how would you posirton this technique against the “hinge and hold” chipping (& short pitching) technique Philp Mickleson explains in his shortgame secrets? I.e. Are both techs interchangable, Is your technique less risky or is it just a matter of personal preference. Phil is very explicit/firm about using the hinge and hold.....
Gert Jan de Rooij love Phils way but I just think it requires a little more timing and coordination.
Danny Maude thank you! Helps me to understand and work it all through.
Danny, Great video. Is the distance the ball goes the result of just gravity, or are you helping a bit? Thanks, I learn much from your work. From Naples, Florida
Airbus Pilot you can give it a little help on the way too, how much to give is just down to experimenting
Danny, I'm curious - is your chip shot driven mostly with your shoulders or arms/hands? Or do you just swing it back & through, without particular focus on either? Thanks for the videos!
soflynn4, my arms are passive and it’s directed by the top of my torso
Thank you for the quick reply. About 5 years ago, in an attempt to gain more consistency in my short game, I went to a shoulder-driven swing. I'm in an awful slump now & longing for the old swing -- but I can't get that feel back. However, based on your answer, I'll stick it out & put more work into it. Thanks, again.
How involved is the lower body during the swing? Is it mostly arms?
It tens to gently pivot back and through
What wedge did he use in that chipping lesson? Very cool!👍🏻
Mike Joaquin 56 degree
I love your videos Danny! It would be beneficial though if you would mention the club you're using.
Danny, question. I noticed no shifting your weight forward, it seems you are balanced. I this correct? Much appreciated.
Absolutely Peter
What is the loft of the chipping club you're using in this video?
Im using a 56 degree wedge here Ron
do you lift the heel off the ground as you and Chris Ryan have the same technique
not on these small chip shots
Danny, I used to be an excellent chipper. However, over the past couple of years, I seem to have gotten the yips and end up hitting the ground 6 inches behind the ball when I chip. I've seen your video and it all makes perfect sense, but I'm still hitting the ground behind the ball. Is there anything you can suggest to cure this issue? Thanks in advance.
hitting behind the golf ball is fine if you use the bounce of the golf club
Tiger Woods uses this chip shot on the 14 hole on Bristish Open today !! 😍 Another player did it yesterday !! It works well and I love it. Will practice and let you know the feedback .Hope the green keeper would not be around 😅
Banyen Kirivong, funny, they’ve obviously been watching 😂😂
Terrific reminder that we often make golf more complicated than the basic physics requires. Standing close to the ball & vertical lets it feel very natural for the club head to fall in like a pendulum with minimal user influence. On a different point, you seem to have a little forward press to initiate the backswing. I have found it very helpful to do this. Maybe you could comment on why you do this and be explicit about it in your next chipping video. Thank you!
Great practical advice Danny as always. For these ‘bare lie’ chips what club were you using and, in particular, what bounce angle?
This was my 56 degree sand wedge with 10 degree bounce
Great video, why do you splay the left foot out and not keep it square you didn’t mention
Ian Pentz it just helps the rotation of the lead leg and provides more space to come through
What club are you using? Thanks
Deanna Jason for very small chips it’s ok for the toe to be resting on the ground, just make it less on the longer ones
@@DanielMaude thank you
I got to 5 h cap and I was very poor chipper ,missed green was guaranteed bogey or worse unless could putt ,so I had to hit greens but eventually the poor chipping got worse ,I was terrified over a basic chip and if was over a bunker or water I was totally goosed , this then affects your whole game eventually as puts your driving and irons under too much pressure so I gave up golf ,was no longer fun , I was humiliated on the course a lot which was hard to take ,even if I was an average chipper could have gone to really low h cap , I watch golf on telly and get anxious watching an awkward chip ffs !!
nice video tho Danny
Alan McCarthy try one handed chipping Alan, I’m serious it really works. Allow the club head to swing and do the work and see what happens. A recent European tour professional chips one handed because he has simply can’t with two. He just yips
+Danny Maude did that before Danny with limited success but that was few years ago ,worth another try!! ,haven't played in 3 years tho
+Danny Maude and ya I was yipping too ,torture for a pro tho and very embarrassing
Alan McCarthy it was but he got over it
Is your weight on the front foot, as most chipping tuition suggests, or is it even between the feet?
Yes although I don't mention it because its always changing subtly for different shots. I like you to find out the right amount all by yourself
Danny. I commented on another video. Sorry. What wedge do you suggest for this method?
56 degree
I like it and it works. This is terrific to get the ball rolling and on line. Except on soggy courses. Hard to really hit the ball when you're that close. Came up short often. But hey I need another solution. Which is what makes this game so damn hard.
Al Samsa, thanks for sharing
Subbed.
