- If you struggle with chip shots and pitch shots around the green it's because you have a chipping and pitching technique that is either too complicated or your trying to use the same technique for all your short game shots.
In this golf video Danny Maude explains the difference between chipping and pitching and shows you exactly what short game technique to use and when to use it.
Here's what you are going to learn
1. How you set-up to chipping and pitching is crucial for consistent strikes.
2. Learn how to have a tension free golf swing
3. Use a chipping technique for chipping but a pitching technique for pitching
So if you are looking at improving your confidence with chip shots around the green watch the latest video from Danny Maude right here 👇 • Before Chipping Onto T...

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On UA-cam and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If it's a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumble
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

This golf lesson provides a couple of wonderful drills to help you hit your driver straight. If you are a beginner golfer and are looking for some golf driver tips that are simple and easy to do then you are going to love this.
I will show you the golf swing slow motion so that you can see what you need to do to improve.
We look at 3 things:
1. How to stop slicing your driver
2. How to swing more in to out or how to swing more inside out
3, How to get the correct impact position with driver
and I hope to do all this with simple golf tips so you can create an effortless golf swing - Спорт
Never a bad thought on this channel. Just stuff that works
Thanks for the support
Another very good video. I especially like the swing graphics which helps a lot.
Excellent Demonstration. Especially love the graphic visuals of the wall and others. Helped me immensely.
Really happy to help Dan
Another excellent post. 👌 Explained well 👏
Thanks Danny! Been struggling with chipping for a while now. Great tip for leveling the shoulders and keeping left side integrity. Instantly started hitting much crisper chips. Great video!
Great tips, not an advent golfer but just purchased a chipping wedge to practice with so this vid is great for me
Great use of the training aid to explain the fundamental basis of the swing plane. Once I understood the impact point, when it too place I was then able to address the areas for pure ball striking for improvement. Golfers need to understand that the golf swing is a science of ‘cause and effect’ analysis. Great video as always!
Great tip I can’t wait to get out there and work on my short game
Have fun Thomas, I will be out practicing today
Thanks for your videos I have improved my game thanks to your videos Danny
Happy to help
Always love how authentic your videos are. No cut outs of non-perfect shots and easy relatable tips. Would love to see another driver video in the near future as I’m currently struggling with making consistent contact in the middle of the clubface.
Thank you Simon, that’s coming next Saturday
@@DanielMaude - me, too! What I think would be great is a way to diagnose the contact pattern you make on a given club (using contact paper or foot spray), and then translate that into how to reduce your horizontal or vertical contact dispersion in a measurable, verifiable way. As you know, handicap is closely correlated with contact dispersion, and it is more than correlation, it's cause and effect; but nobody talks about how to reduce horizontal or vertical contact dispersion.
@@DanielMaudeLooking forward to it!!!
@@Golf_Quest I agree, any way to measure what you are doing that gives you direct feedback is great
Brilliant clip as usual Danny, will be entering into a few months of practise in the winter season, working from the green out, thanks again.
love your videos. no gimmicks, just straight shootin.
Thanks for the support Nick
Good man Danny, brilliant video. Thanks for your help.
Pleasure
Thanks again Danny great tips as usual.!
My pleasure! Happy to help Ronald
The arc graphics are great. Another excellent lesson.
Super kind thank you
Golden advice and teaching style, Danny. Thank you!
Happy to help, have a great weekend
Terrific video!!! Great coaching hints. I’ll be watching this again and again in the early spring. Thank you very much!
Have fun Heather
Hi Danny, I really look forward to your videos each week and they are always excellent. Regards to the one on chipping, I was propably the worlds worse until I started practicing left hand below right. Its been amazing, as I no loger 'chilli dip' my knees, my conatct has improved as well as my aim and distance control. I'd be interested as to your thoughts on this, for others.
amazing tips Danny, worked great for me yesterday. Shot 4 under in my competition. Thank you 🙏
Amazing James well done
Going to use these great tips today and tomorrow!!🏌🏿♂️⛳️
Have fun david
Always watching and learning. But been chipping like that for yrs and it works.
Thanks for all the advice Dan. 👍
Awesome to hear Derek
Danny, Again, your videos are the best on UA-cam!!! Can't wait to see the course management video coming.....
Thank you 😁
Beautifully simple Danny. Gosh did I need this. Be good-Russ
Thanks Danny. You're a great help to a lot of us golfers. Personally I have improved my hitting with your help and lots of buckets of balls :)
Thank you 😁 happy to help and really appreciate the support!
Thanks Danny just tried your tips in my garden worked a treat can't wait to get on the course Monday.
Have fun Jim, love to hear how you get on
Thanks Danny. Ido struggle with chipping and this lesson will help me a lot.
Love to hear how you get on Matt
Great instruction and I love the visual of the club moving on it's arc when you raise or drop during the swing.
Thank you jeff
Thank you for another very helpful video.
My pleasure Alan, have a great weekend
There is now no further need to check in on another golf channel. Danny thanks again for an excellent demo perfectly explained and saved in my memory 😊
Really happy to help
Had a first lesson this week with a Pro...and he pointed out that I lean back at strike and hitting behind the ball. By the end of the hour I was more hitting after. So this is a very apt vlog.
Quick update...
Just had a practice in the living room off the hearth rug with a vase a nice target (plastic light balls obviously). Wife not right pleased but happy to report the technique works...
Great video, THANKS Danny
Pleasure Mark all the best
Sunny greetings from Florida Danny, off to the training area to test. Easy as that ❤
Have fun Rick, have a lovely holiday. Send pics
For anyone still struggling after watching this, the big key for me was keeping weight more on the front foot. Also, turning toward the target is important. Great lesson!
I think we get the point...
Thanks! Getting closer to the ball and following these tips has dramatically improved my chipping.
Awesome to hear
His videos are gold amazing free content
Really happy to help Samuel
Love how you setup cos I like to play the ball off my trail foot. I will definitely use the practice swing before each shot. Thanks so much Danny.
Have fun Kham
Really good, as usual. Taking it to the course, weather permitting, this week and looking to lower my scores.
Have fun
Danny, love your videos. Would love to see a course vlog talking about course management, and to see all of your tips and teaching come together in a longer-form video. At least 9 holes, 18 would be even better! Keep up the great work!
💯 it’s coming
This is something that I would love to learn too. Thank you in advance, Danny.
@@DanielMaude Christmas coming early this year! Looking forward to it!
This week I had a wake up call .I have been playing golf with the same group of guys all season this week the club champion asked to join us holly crap I have a lot to learn .I love this game it humbles you thanks for your help🇺🇸
It does indeed Rick
Danny!
I took your "feet together drill" with PW, 7 iron and Driver to the range today and was amazed and shocked at how well I swung all clubs with great BALANCE and FAR!
Great video!! My new go to "practice swing before a full final swing! Thank you!
It’s a wonderful way to help improve your consistency
Excelente. Thanks Danny.
Glad you liked it! 🙏
Very good clear video, well done.
Hope it helps Robert
Another great video Danny 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew
Great Stuff !!
Great vid!
Excellent lesson. Great explanation. (greetings from Belgium).😍😄😍
Thanks so much
Love it. Hole out a 15 yard chip for birdie thanks to this video. Keep it up
Amazing, well done Rob
What a great lesson. Thank you.
Thank you!
Great video. There seem to be a few different ways to chip and I really like Danny’s method here. I tried Dan Grieve’s method, but much prefer Danny M’s. Simpler and more reliable. 👊
Thank you Peter, really happy to help
Another great video, as a novice golfer the explanation of the basic fundamentals ( especially the left hand placed at the bottom first to level shoulders ) and weight transfers is invaluable.looking forward to trying these out. Any thanks again
Have fun
Great visual on the bottom of the swing!
Thanks 😁
Well done Danny 👏 😊
Thanks for the support Roy
Thanks Danny, excellent video again. I've been messing about practising my chipping and have been fatting quiet a few, so have deliberately been lifting my left shoulder at address, thinking this would encourage me to keep my hands up as I came through. Having just watched this video, I spent a few minutes putting your tips into practice and immediately realised I'd been getting it back to front! There's more control and consistency to the swing, plus it feels so much smoother and comfortable. Thanks again for your videos and in my humble opinion your video lessons are the best on UA-cam by a long way, I just hope I can put it all into practice when I get back into it properly in the new year, after an extended lay off. In the meantime my garden should have less divots in it from now on!! 🤣🤣
You can do it Frank
Great advice, the last time I played I asked the club house pro to critique my golf swing, his advice was square my shoulders.
This is the best golf channel next to Rick Shiels and Jack Nicklaus Golf My Way on VHS...Hello from Texas!
Super kind thank you
@@DanielMaude Thank you for the content! Im not kidding about GMW...That tape started me on golf and I still chip like Jack does circa 1982... Now if I can only apply your newer methods on the course! Cheers!
Thank you Danny! Always helpful to gain confidence around the green. I've watched you other videos on chipping and now I've gone from dreading chipping to now it's one of the best parts of my game. I practice chipping like Steph Curry does free throws. That's how I approach chipping like free throws. It's my chance to score without a defense on the court. Lol...
Cheers Danny,
Stacy
Brilliant to hear
🔥👍 Very nice drill for chipping Danny ! Thanks U. 🏌
My pleasure!!
Excellent video Danny on hitting the short chip to a close pin! This shot has been plaguing me lately and I'm glad I found this video. I like your idea of imagining leaning against a wall with my lead side, level shoulders, and playing the ball somewhere in the middle of a narrow stance and striking down on the ball! I also like to visualize the arc that goes along with this shot! Your suggestion of pre-setting the wrists for this shot and the arms and body working together is an excellent one! Your idea of "radius control" is a good one for me because I have a tendency at times to have too long of a shaft on my shots! I really liked your demonstration over the bunker with this shot since I'm presented with this shot a lot on the course I play! Well Done Danny! Always picking up great tips from you!
Thanks so much for taking the time to feedback John
This video comes along just as my short game has deserted me
Love to hear how you get on
Great instruction as always. Beautiful course there with nicely mown areas around the green.
On my home course, the grass gets pretty shaggy around the greens, so the ball may be sitting down slightly in the grass. Any changes on setup for that? I feel like I’m more likely to get stuck in the grass or blade it because I guess I’m trying to help the ball get up. Any advice is appreciated.
👍🏻👍🏻🏌🏻♂️
Thanks for your video.
Thanks Reynald!
As usual, a great video. I think my main problem is moving up and down and I hope this will help. I think visualising a wall you just lean against is also a great mind picture.
You can do it!
Thanks!
Happy to help Rob
great channel & teacher subbed..
Welcome to the channel
You have just described many of the faults I have put together for a couple of months now. Once I had a reliable chipping action. But instead of 9 out of 10 on the green it's more like 1 out of 10 these days. The more solutions I have tried, particularly as the ground softens up, the greater the loss in confidence. So, as soon as the rain stops I'm away to the back garden to try out your advice. Thanks for this - there's now some light at the end of this tunnel.
Love to hear how you get on Ian
@@DanielMaude After a few hours in the garden on Monday I recovered the relaxed chipping action encouraged by your video. Today, Tuesday, in a team match play competition, all the jerky stabs came back for short duffs and blading the ball across the green. The shorter the chip, the worse this compulsive stabbing action becomes.
It was a tight match that I finally won with only one hole difference at anytime. In the end my opponent was infected with my jerky chipping and took 4 shots to get to the par 5 green from 15 metres on the final hole.
This issue is all in the head. I can play good chips in the range 5 to 20 m in the garden. Put me in a competition situation and all rational thought flies out of my head.
I'll carry on working at this since the garden experience shows the mechanics are there.
Thanks Danny. The squaring of the shoulders is I suspect where I go wrong, will practice this. Cheers
All the best Kevin
Wonderful coach🎉
Thank you 😁
Hi Danny, I always love your tutorial golf video’s. This one too. Great idea to imagine a wall your leaning on. But I also see you’re doing a slight press forward of the grip before you start the backswing. Are you aware of this. It works for me. Thank you! ❤
Thanks for those tips and tried them today and it made a few less shots for my round - thanks
Well done Adrian
What a great lesson, Thanks. A different approach than using the bounce before the ball method which I’ve been trying. But I’m thinking that still requires more timing and dependant on the ground and lie which always changes. This seems better since it takes that out of the picture with ball first.
I used be be great around the greens, it was my favourite shot then one year it was gone and I’ve been struggling to get it back. I just never thought about it, I just got up and hit. It was all feel and it was wonderful. Thanks for the help.
There’s certainly a time and place to strike the ground before the ball but as the ground gets soft ball first guaranteed good contact
Thanks
All the best Antonio
Thank again
Great video. I got a request for a future video. Could you do a video with the ball being in the rough? That is where most of us are probably chipping from.
💯 here’s one that might help in the meantime ua-cam.com/video/G5KQfzrn9_U/v-deo.htmlsi=L7Gk6FEGBD_c92jH
Good tips, this ties into your previous vid where you pretend the tee is a nail and your driving it into the ground for good ball contact
Absolutely for these small chip shots
Great explanation of the chipping motion. Graphics are so helpful on this. From this I can figure out a method that I own. For me it is no wrist hinge and visualise the landing spot on every chip. And I will be adding in that left hand below right to get the shoulders level set up and don’t go before I have the visualisation. Thanks for another top class lesson Danny.
awesome John, hope you've managed to keep that ball striking
@@DanielMaude Been working on the set up you showed me and in the last couple of competition rounds ball striking - and scoring - has been a lot better. I have a season ticket on the range for the bay with the mirror. 😎
@@johnritchie8336brilliant 👌
Just spent a couple of hours on the range and a very wet practice ground applying this teaching. The lead hand below to square the shoulders was tranformative for my strike. This is a classic in the canon of the Maude Method. So grateful to get this level of teaching every week.
Anther great video Danny, so love Princes GC too
It is awesome
really love this video i think the explanation of low point and arc depth ill translate up to the irons as well! saved and will burn it in my memory!
Really happy to help
Nice video Danny. I love Princes GC.
Me too
Would love to see a video on "where to look". Whether a green side chip or a full iron, the advice is to have the bottom of the arc AFTER the ball. Do we "imagine" that or look there? Also, if we imagine that but look at the ball, would you recommend that we look at the back, top or front of the ball?
Happy to create a video on this
Keeping shoulders level with uphill and downhill chips - line up level with the contour. I find downhill chips coming out too low sometimes . Great video Danny.
That’s it Mark
Step 2 of 3 setting the wrists totally fixed my chipping 😁
Awesome to hear
Great teaching. Hit on my chipping issues dead on.
Brilliant, love to hear how you get on
Very helpful for these tricky shots that come up often when you miss greens. When you hit them thin it really inflates your score which is my tendency. I am a 15 handicap trying to get to a 10 and these chip shots and pitch shots are the ones I need to master to get there. My typical 88 or 89 is becoming 83 to 84 which has brought me quickly from a 16.1 to a 14.6 but I have a ways to go which just means more practice in the yard.
Have fun Bill
I have found that it helps me to make sure I do not get the club too far behind (inside) on the back swing. Also, on the down swing I make sure my lead shoulder moves around, rather than up. Even if I start with my shoulders level, I can still spoil the shot by raising my lead shoulder on the downswing. Hope this helps someone with better shots around the greens, which can really lower scores.
Danny, this is SO topical at the moment. With wet ground conditions it's too easy to fat it. I like to set a slight angle on the trail wrist, like a small forward press and then maintain that angle and let rotation be the power source. Having a consistent routine is key. I probably need to concentrate on the shoulders being more level. The slight forward movement I started doing a few weeks ago and helps find the centre of the face more easily. (I suppose a bit similar to the change made by Viktor Hovland a few months ago)
Excellent vid as usual !
Brilliant, sounds perfect Philip
Brilliant! This goes to my golf essentials playlist. I need to watch this any time my chipping goes wrong. One of my big issues is tension during the swing making my motion very wooden and causing me to under-commit. That leads to those frustrating shots that land in the bunker or rough. Any tips on how to keep a nice fluid motion through the swing?
The first thing I would do is make sure your arms are soft and grip pressure is light
Great lesson. I spent 2 hours last night doing exactly this. Got to a point where if I didn't hole out, it was less than 2 feet from the cup. Practice Practice Practice!
Indeed, practice
Thankiuu !
Pleasure
Felt like I've had a really deep-dive in Dan Grieve's Release 1 there - great info and really useful to get another person's explanation. As an aside, there is a pro player where I train who chips with his hand's reversed all the time.
I think chipping cack handed is a great way to chip
Fantastic video. I completely forgot about the level shoulders tip which you have talked about before. Can't wait to miss a couple of greens today so that I can get up and down for par. 🙂 It would be great if you had app so that we can take some of these tips with us to the practice range.
Have fun Edward
Just chipped in for birdie! Thanks Danny.
Great lesson, Danny! Thank you! I wish I could have seen you pick the balls up with your wedge. It was just out of frame. 😅
😁🙏
Danny, I'm a bit behind in your videos so I'm just seeing this one. It is OUTSTANDING! The visuals of the swing arc and the illustration with the alignment rod are slot on. It really gives you a sense of what's going on with the swing and demonstrating mechanics.
One question...I don't own a 60° wedge. I do most of my chipping with a gap wedge which is 51°. Is it the same setup and technique?
Another great lesson!
Thank you and yes it is exactly the same
Great video, Danny. One question. Would you only use your most lofted club for this chipping motion? Thanks, Anthony.
All depends what I want the ball to do when it lands. If I want it to stop quickly a 60 degree is a good choice
Terry Cork
Great lesson Danny
Thanks so much Terry
Danny great video, I would like to get some info from you on which club is the best and when for chipping … PW or 56 etc etc
Just think of what you want the ball to do when it lands. The quicker you want it to stop the more loft you take
Hi Danny. Great tips on this video. Would you consider doing a video about hitting iron off the tee such as on par 3s. Does the approach change? What height if tee should you use? Do you still hit down on the ball. Doesn’t seem to be many videos in this. Thanks
I only use a tee on a par 3 to give myself a perfect lie. That way I can play it just like a normal iron shot
I seem to always miss the green on my second shot by a few feet, sometimes in the rough sometimes in the short stuff. The issue for me is the tight lie short stuff. I seem to chunk a lot of these shots. I need these shots to be some what close to par the hole. Honestly I think I would gain three to five strokes per round if I could master that shot. As always Danny you are the best!
Hi Danny, what a video (for such crucial shots indeed)! Just give me 2 hours and I rush to the course to test your tips. Sure it helps.
Rebalancing shoulders skewed to left really helped me a lot! As simple as that
Great tip Danny thanks say hi to your dad for me have a great week
Will do Terry 🙏
Great video and explanation. The link to the practice plan is for a different video. Where can I find the practice plan for this lesson? Thanks very much.
Let me check
As always, great content. With your pitching and chipping videos from 80 yards and in, along with one squeeze the towel grip tip, I have finally broken 80 a few times this year and score in the mid to low 80s most rounds. Now if you could help me read a green with no depth perception...(blind in one eye)that
Would be great😮
Thank you, happy to help 😁
