In this video how you the stabilize motion effect that constantly impresses my video production clients and gets my paying jobs as a videographer! You can do this very simply inside of Adobe After Effects CC, and after watching how to do it in this tutorial, you’ll be able to execute this effect even if you’re a beginner video editor.
I recently used this stabilize motion technique in a basketball highlight video that I made for a freelance videography client of mine. After seeing how popular this effect was each time I used it in my work, I decided that it would make a good topic for a simple video editing UA-cam tutorial.

You’re welcome! Really glad you’re enjoying the videos!!
Love this! 🖤 learn a lot.. I know this is for basketball but I’m going to see if we could use this for indoor soccer!
You could definitely use it for indoor soccer! Field is a similar size, number of people is about the same, and the dynamics of how players move and pass are very similar so basically everything here should be applicable for you
fantastic video, very clear and well explained
🙌

@peterserellas Man I've been trying to figure this effect out and how to do it for the last couple months!! Thanks a million. I appreciate your tutorials. They've helped me quite a bit with my sports videos. Respect 💪🏾
Love to hear it!!
@petersarellas By the way I have a question for you, when your doing cinematic sports clips and your recording at a game what's camera setup usually like? I tell you what that "legs crossed" positions when your on the floor recording is something else to get used to. Lol.
@@l64-thejourney yeah I don’t have the flexibility for that lol. I’m usually kneeling or sitting with a leg out.
@petersarellas got it. Lol. What's your go to camera equipment you use for filming basketball?
@@l64-thejourney here’a the gist of it: WHATS IN MY CAMERA BAG 2022 | Sports Videography Gear

Since this video I sold the A7iii following the purchase of my A7iv and picked up the FX30 as well
Peter is goated
Man not yet but I appreciate your energy on the channel 🙏🏼
This is awesome man! Do you usually go clip by clip or drag a whole mixtape in from premiere?
Glad you liked it! If I don’t intend on doing a ton in after effects then I’ll usually use dynamic link to bring certain clips in but if I know that I want to do a lot then I’ll export from premiere and bring the whole video into after effects in a separate project.
Goat
This nice! The best person i ever seen do this is Koolmac 🥵 slickest videographer in the Basketball Game!!
Thank you! And yeah, he’s nice with it
Underrated
Appreciate it 🙏🏼
Wassup bro dope vid love watching the tutorials, would you mind doing a tutorial on masking and visual effects in after effects
Thanks, I’m really happy that you enjoy the videos! Did you have anything specific in mind? Masking and visual effects is basically all of After Effects lol but if you have a specific effect or use in mind I’ll see what I can do
Peter Sarellas I guess more so just showing masking used in a highlight mix
That can happen
This was awesome man...I've never ventured in AE much...where would this fit in your workflow would you do this before or after a main edit in premiere.
Usually I’ll put together an assembly edit in premiere and then apply this as needed in after effects once the base is together
In Final Cut Pro do I just use key frames, seems like the same idea
Just f*cking beautiful) my man :D thanks)
Really glad you found it helpful!
You mentioned that adding too many keyframes can mess up the tracking. I keep running into this problem, but I'm following your instructions exactly. I'm tracking a player's eye which really works, but playback is jumpy. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? And thank you for this tutorial! Super easy to understand!
It’s possible that your clip has movement in it in one direction and your position keyframes are moving the clip in the opposite direction and making the footage look jerky. I’d try moving around where on my timeline the keyframes are and get a look you like through trial and error
underrated channel, i dont understand what you actually did
Appreciate that. Is there any part in particular that confused you? Maybe I can try to help clarify
@@petersarellas i mean can i show the difference of the footage (before and after) so i can understand the change, i usually edit soccer videos and i am not quite sure if this gonna work
I’ve seen people use this on soccer videos before as well and it’s very effective
Hello can we do the same tracking in davinci resolve?
You can set the auto tracking to stop when it loses track so you dont have to go back and delete the stuff. Saves more time.
Good tip, thanks for sharing
@@petersarellas Great video btw. New to AE but not new to this kind of thing. I am sure you know, for those that don't in the options when you set up the tracking select and set adapt feature to "stop" and it stops when, well for want of a better explanation, it starts guessing.
ayeeee
Back at it again
thanks for the tutorial, Im not sure why but AE isnt letting me click and move the small tracking points like you did when you made it into a "curve" at 4:10. When I click those points it does nothing and I cant move them. ANy clue what IM doing wrong?
It would depend on a few things but if it helps I’m not actually curving a line, at that point in the video I was just moving one track point that happened to form a curve with the track point before and after it, and you can move a track point by clicking on it and dragging (it may be helpful to go back to that point on the timeline to make sure you’re moving the correct track point)
Can you please make a video on how you created ashes falling in the background effect in many of your videos
The short answer to that question is use the CC Particle World effect or Trapcode Particular if you have Red Giant plug-ins (or get stock footage). I’ll add a video explaining the long answer to the list of ones I want to make.
Peter Sarellas thank you so much man. Especially for this video I just started video editing and I’m Editing my first basketball clip right now and this made it feel so alive .
You’re welcome! Glad to have you around the channel Christian
Iam new to all this,me and brother are hoopers that want to learn editing...this video is a lil advanced for us since we rookies at videography, but can you please link us to a master class or beginner courses?? So we can work our way up to this video.... please and thank you
I have a couple beginner things on this channel but if you’re looking for beginner video editing for a broader audience I’d recommend starting with Justin Odisho. His channel covers literally everything you could need to know about editing in premiere pro so it’s a good place to start.
@@petersarellas thanks for the response! Iam going to go through your old videos & check out your recommendation! Thank you!
do you think i can do this with my olympus omd m10 mark 2?
You should be able to do this effect with any camera that records video
If You have to shoot an NFL game what you would track? Ball? Helmet? Jersey’s number?
Thank you
Ball can definitely be done. If I was doing a player I might try to pick a small logo on their jersey or do their head/helmet.
@@petersarellas thank you Peter. I ll try track logo shirt
Can I use my a6400 Sony to take videography and photography too ...…???
You definitely can! I know some people out there doing great work with a6000 series cameras
Peter can you link your transitions below
I don’t use that many pre-made transitions. I mostly make them myself in Premiere or do them in camera. If you watch my “How to Shoot a Sports Video” video I talk about transition there for a bit
Can you do the stabilization effect work on any software? .. like iMovie? DaVinci resolve?
You can’t do the effect automatically as I’ve done it here in any software, but I know for sure that you could do it in After Effects and Final Cut at least.
It can be done in davinci resolve. I've done it on a few of the athletic related videos that I've done.
How do i export the video?
File > Export > Add to render queue
is it adobe you using?
Yes
is it better to film vertically to help sizing with insta reels?
If the only purpose for your footage is Instagram reels and you’re confident that you can keep your subject within the frame when shooting vertically then you can. I usually don’t because I like to also have the option to also use the footage on platforms with widescreen video like UA-cam and it’s easier to keep the subject in the frame when filming horizontally.
@@petersarellas thanks for the advice!
does this effect work the same when you use it in a 1920x1080 composition?
Yes you may just need to scale your footage differently to fill the frame. You should still be trying to keep your subject in the middle of the frame to limit the amount of movement required.
@@petersarellas Cool, ima give it a try.
Can u track a basketball instead?
Yes you definitely can using the same method outlined here
What app is this bro ?
After effects
Where can I get NBA videos? ?
Sorry but I haven’t made any NBA edits since I like to work with footage that I’ve shot or was provided to me by clients so I can’t help you there
I use Vegas Pro :(
Sorry 😕 there isn’t a free option for Premiere Pro sadly but hopefully my video about choosing video editing software can help you
@@petersarellas i'ml get a nicer pc to buy adobe premiere soon
Why not just use a gimbal? I'm confused.
A gimbal does not ensure that your subject stays locked in a specific place within your frame for the entire shot
