    Last Saturday night, my wife and I went out, and we decided to dress up. She wore a nice dress and I wore wool charcoal pants, a white shirt with a black tie, a burgundy waistcoat, black and burgundy saddle shoes and a camel overcoat. I felt like a million bucks. We got compliments all night as we were the best dressed people wherever we went. It's a real self-esteem booster receiving compliments from others.

    Hello Gent Z, Congratulations on another enlightening presentation. My learning curve throughout my 65 years including as a former officer of U.S. Marines and especially the last four years have been very steep. My experience includes learning then knowing my sartorial responsibilities. U.S Marines do not compromise on the details of our uniform. The last four years and especially this year 2024 taught me one more lesson that I believe directly relates to gentlemanliness, to how we men behave and present ourselves, and perhaps also to philosophical, if not to spiritual notions. We men and women must KNOW THYSELF.
    Peace be with you, Joe.

    Whenever i have had a well made suit that fitted perfectly, it was so comfortable to wear and just easy. Not the distraction that it is made out to be but just a standard of dress that makes me feel more comfortable. I argue that a well fitted suit is as comfortable as any leisure wear or more casual attire.

    I've been a practicing attorney for over 30 years and own an array of suits. I almost always wear a pocket square. I'm very comfortable with my own sense of style. A few counter-points to the idea of always choosing to wear a suit. 1) A suit simply isn't always appropriate. If it is out of place in your field of work, wearing one will make you stand out as clueless. 2) It is an absurd false dichotomy to suggest that sartorial choices are defined by the polar opposites of a formal business suits and cargo shorts. Elegant casual wear is arguably harder to do well than simply selecting a suit from the wardrobe, but the well dressed man knows how. 3) You have to possess a sense of occasion. Putting on a three piece suit to do the groceries or attend a weekend poolside BBQ will make you look like an attention-seeking twit. That is all.

    • @Gent.Z
      @Gent.Z  3 місяці тому +1

      I fully agree with you, Roger. A suit is certainly not always the best dressed choice. However, I also have a feeling that Ritchie was using the term ‘a suit’ as shorthand for being well-dressed on the whole

    It has been easy for me because my father had all his suits tailored made in London in the 1950’s (I’m British) in the classic Savile Row style when having your suit made for you wasn’t the vast expense that it is now, and I’m exactly the same size and build as him, so I inherited them all and they are beautifully cut to flatter the male figure, and I get many compliments from people on the street on my suits and tweed jackets and it’s all because of my father’s good taste.

    I love my jeans but in the office I hated dressing down to fit in with a t-shirt and jeans 'uniform' . For the next business role it will be a well tailored suit, quality shirt, silk tie and polished English shoes. My dad made his way up to a management role and his advice was to dress the best you can afford in business. The corporate polyester laptop rucksack will definitely be left under the desk and a leather bag employed. First impressions count.

    The style in The Gentlemen was inspiring to say the least, especially Theo James and Giancarlo Esposito. A video analysing some of their outfits and theme of the style would be great. For example, I noticed no one wore black. It was primarily shades of browns and blues instead.

    I truly loved listening to this presentation on classic men's style. I am in my 50s and have embraced this since in my early 20s when I went to work in the city wearing a suit. I have always aspired to dress well. I would say today I have never dress better than in the past. I think that has to do with more knowledge on classic style, the ability to afford custom clothing (shirts/jackets/pants), and online shopping for discount and pre-owned items (ties / cufflinks, etc.)

    Great video--Guy gets it right.
    Years ago, I worked in an ad agency on the account side so I always wore suits--more by choice than for compliance. The creatives all stayed in the office and wore more casual clothing. One of our colleagues got married and we were all at the church before the service. Everyone had on their best suits and a female colleague looked around at all of us and said "Wow--everyone cleans up nicely! Except for Eric.... he looks the same as he always does." It was not really a criticism but a compliment of sorts; because I always dressed up I looked the same as ever. Everyone else brought their A game while every day was my A game.
    I well remember the black crepe double breasted Armani chalk-stripe suit I was wearing with a crisp white shirt and a silver Macklesfield tie, white Irish linen pocket square and black double monks before they were a thing.

I'd also add that getting shirts made to measure or bespoke (if you can afford it). I do the former as I am tall and slim. How do I feel when smartly dressed?? Confident and comfortable. My wife has noticed how people approach and interact with us when out in public since I've made the effort a couple of years back to lose weight & dress better. She even accessorizes to match me on special occasions. Such as matching tartans at Highland games and matching leathers/metals on our shoes, belts & (her) bag for evenings out. That tells me she not only likes the way I dress, but trusts my sense of color, textures and style.

    Lucky you that you have a narrative that justifies wearing a suit. I work in an IT company and most of folks working there dress like toddlers in their 40s. I love menswear but I cannot help but feeling completely out of place if I bring the garments I enjoy wearing to the office. Even my partner subtlety mocks me if I wear an overcoat that is a tad more dressy than usual. It is tough to be classic out there when it is pouring mediocrity.

      You just have to dress a tad dressier step by step to get your coworkers used to seeing you dressed up. Perhaps it will encourage them to dress up too. If everyone’s wearing t shirts and jeans to the office, then step it up with a polo and chinos. If they’re wearing polos and chinos, you wear an ocbd shirt. If they are wearing a shirt and chinos, you can add a jacket. You can layer with sweaters and jackets once it’s cold also.

    Can I ask something to the Sartorial crowd? I'm a 40 year old guy who dresses like a toddler* but whenever I look at satorial clothes I imagine feeling trapped in them. This is because I've always worn the cheap stuff probably. As I'm upgrading many parts of my life I'm wondering what direction to choose clothing wise, but there is this big priority for me of movement freedom. I want to be able to dance and do exercise in the clothes I'm wearing right now. I don't mean gym clothes. I mean that when I wear pants I want my legs to easily flow over my bike without constraint. I would love for my knees to be able to reach my chest not inhibited by the pants I wear. This is my question: is there beautiful clothing for men that looks stylish AND has a level of flexibility that enables casual freedom of movement?

But dressing in a suit is not an option as I don't want it to be damaged. After work or when im not working in the group I do dress up more. Although I mostly do wear a shirt with jeans or a poloshirt. A blazer is fine but I don't wear that indoors with the children.

    I work in an industry where there is a liberal orthodoxy that dressing 'too well' reinforces a power dynamic between ourselves and our clients.
    What're you thoughts on that?

    wearing a suit is great if at least a few others around you do likewise. however, if you're an eagle among pigeons you'll stand out too much and it's difficult to pull off for the typical man.

    must be boring to think mostly on dressing, but not on something important you bring to the world, like Mark or other real mens do. I feel comfortable mostly in technical gear like ecco exostrikes and smth like Acronim up. suits are 1) useless for different terrains and weathers 2) overall boring and lack on crucial functionality for common life 3) outdated in materials comfort

    Most of what you say is right, yet your illustration choice with Jacob Ree's Mogg is out of place. The guy probably knows more about wearing a suit, and tailoring than most other people ever will. Litteraly went to Eton, and notoriously has his suits made in Saville Row. He dresses conservatively, and may not always look like a Playboy, but hey, it's not like he is in his early 30's either, and has a wife and 6 kids at home.

    • @Gent.Z
      @Gent.Z  3 місяці тому +1

      You're completely right about Mogg. But the irony is that, despite having the background of a gentleman who would know about suits and has one of the best tailors in the country, he still looks terrible. It goes to show that style relies on your own mindset and taste as much as anything.

    Very sorry, the impulse to wear a flowery pocket square is, to all intents and purposes, the same as the impulse to dress like a teenager. Hence, I 'own' my suit by not having a pocket square. I dress well out of respect for myself and for the world, and a pocket square is superfluous and vain. Vanity is as unsuitable to a man past fifty-sixty as cargo shorts and flip-flops: the latter may be suitable on the beach but the former are unsuitable anywhere.

    Well dressed though Mr. Ritchie may be, it takes more than clothing to be a gentleman. There is a grubby quality to Mr. Ritchie. For context, Mark Wahlberg displays that same grubbiness. In my humble opinion, Joe Rogan is far more of a gentleman - he just hasn't gotten a grip on the POWER of clothing. Yet ...
