Janelle, you have given me so much! I stopped “creating/sewing” for years because of the pressure to make it perfect and your sweet and constant encouragement in the way you teach and share has changed me over the last couple of years of watching you. I think 85% of my wardrobe is now made by me! Thank you for giving me back the confidence to try and to keep honing my skills💜 I appreciate you more than you could know! As far as Austin goes…Torchy’s Tacos has the best Queso and chips I have ever had! And there is a brick and mortar ModCloth store (one of only two in the U.S.) located in the Warehouse District downtown! Have a wonderful time!
Aw this is such a lovely comment! Thank you for taking the time to share. I’m so glad my content has encouraged you to get back into sewing 🧡 Also, thanks so much for your recs! I know ModCloth and will def stop by the store while I’m here 😍
You NEED to go to Austin Creative Reuse! It's a craft thrift shop! Also the Central Library is really pretty and has a great view of the city on the 6th? floor with a nice garden! :D
Austin is very much different from the rest of Texas. I’m sure you will have an interesting time. I live in west Texas and Austin is too big city for me. I was born in Montana and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area so I prefer smaller places. Have a safe trip. I hope folks are friendly to you there. The rest of Texas is very friendly and welcome.
I'm a Texas girl, but it's been a minute since I've been to Austin. So, I can't recommend anyplace in particular. But make sure you get some Tex Mex food. Everyone talks about our barbecue, but for me Tex Mex is where its at.
Welcome to America, Janelle!!! I sure hope you find it welcoming and filled with great southern hospitality!!! Be sure to drink the ice cold sweet tea !!!!❤
If you have time to travel south to San Antonio (about an hour to an hour and a half), you should really visit the missions. They are absolutely incredible. Each is different, and a lot are still functional. 100% worth the day trip. Also, Austin has lots of great food. Someone else mentioned Franklin's BBQ. It's amazing but has a really long wait. Try Black's BBQ. Still really good, but it's easier to get a table. There is also some great Mexican food.
As someone who lives just south of Austin, I was so excited to hear you're coming to Texas! I don't go into the city really anymore (I'm very much a homebody, and it's about an hour away) so I don't have any recommendations, but I hope you have an amazing time and enjoy your time here! 🥰
I'm a Texas girl. Wish you'd be here is the spring when the land is blanketed in wildflowers. Austin has great food, live music and lots of bats at night near some caves. Have fun. I'm about 100 miles away.
I haven’t op shopped for a while, but you prick my interest, I also have only sewn with Boomerang Bags , love the group, and did look forward to the sewing chic chat, but am taking a break atm, but you do inspire me to go back to sewing my clothes again! Enjoy your trip, so exciting and fun! Stay safe!
Hello Janelle, I always enjoy watching your videos.❤ Congratulations on your new home! I live in Texas and a few of my favorite places to eat in Austin are Franklin's BBQ, True Foods, and Local Foods. The Oasis On Lake Travis is a popular restaurant also. If you like hiking, River Place Nature Trail is beautiful and will give you a good workout. I hope you have a fabulous time here in Texas.😊
Janelle...just a concern about bringing your basket to Texas...be sure you are able to bring it back in to Australia when you return. Customs is very sticky about natural fibers coming in to the country. Great haul!! Hope you have a great month in the Lone Star State!
I get a ton of inspiration from these "Thrift With Me" videos. I have to complement you on your recent videos, I'm loving all of your new sewing projects!
My favourite finds are the wattle cross stitch and the beer glasses. I have visited Australia a few times and have so many pictures of wattle! It's a such a great way to honour local vegetation :) I wonder if there is a wattle print fabric out there somewhere.
I’ve picked up quite a few secondhand frames and taken them to my local framing shop for glass and backing and it’s surprising cheap! It might be worth asking for a quote at one close to you 😊
I think the wattle cross stitch is my favourite of all your vintage finds. It’s beautiful. Ready made and as you say you can appreciate the time and effort someone has put into this work, so much so that you’ll enjoy it even more. I love your channel very much. Kindest regards from the Sunshine Coast Queensland ❤
We just moved from Austin and miss it! Fabric stores aren’t really a thing there unless you want quilt fabrics, but the caring place in Georgetown is THE best thrift shop for fabric. Also Georgetown is so charming and worth a visit (it’s just north of Austin) also a visit to Fredericksburg is a must (it’s an old German town with lots of adorable shops!) Waco is also fun and worth the day trip to see the silos and downtown.
Not Austin but…. I live in Round Rock (right outside of Austin) and you must try Round Rock donuts! I’m so happy you’re coming this way! You will love it ❤️❤️
I love the cross stitch wattle. There’s a little op shop here on the Gold Coast that has so many cross stitch frames, I’ve bought most of them. Have a fabulous time in Austin.❤️❤️
Love the champagne glasses and that house book! Have a great time in Austin Texas! Wow--do you have sites in particular you want to see? Can't wait to hear about your trip there!
I loved all your finds.. not sure I can pick just one, hmmmm, the basket and the fabric, oh and the books! Have an amazing time away! Looking forward to hearing all about it. ❤xxx
Adorei as suas compras, mas a cesta pequena como se fosse uma bolsa é linda!!! Boa viagem ao Texas e leve a bolsa, vai ser um sucesso. Beijos - Rio de Janeiro - Brasil.
I hope I'm not too late- I am just discovering your channel and I live in Texas!! I'm a couple hours from Austin but have been wanting to go to Austin Creative Reuse Center, I've heard incredible things! It's a thrift store for crafts specifically!!! I hope you can make it! :)
The basket is cute ❤... I have one exactly the same 😉 ... I used it as a handbag for a very long time and when the rattan hinges eventually broke I replaced them with leather ties, worked a treat ...😃 Have a great time in Texas ... 😎
I love your videos. I hope that you have a safe trip and a wonderful time in Austin. I'm in San Antonio and often end up close to Austin when I visit my daughter. I agree with everyone who recommended Fredericksburg. I love it there. Have a lot of fun! If you were doing a meet up, I would make the drive. 😊
Janelle! I hope you enjoy your trip to the US and the weather treats you kindly. I hope you find the dialect as interesting as theyll find yours in the best possible way.
Such lovely items. I love the bread notebook because the cover is by one of my favorite illustrators Jessica Roux. Also really looking forward to how the pleated dress turns out. Hope you have a wonderful time in America!
Loved this video! I absolutely love thrifting and find it so interesting to see other people’s finds 😍 You always inspire me to go digging for gold 😆 Have a wonderful time in Texas ❤
Hope you have a wonderful time in Texas! I lived there for a couple of years when I was very young, but the two foods that stayed with me were Pecan Pie and Breakfast Tacos, so I recommend giving them a try if you see them. My favourite of your thrift finds is the basket - it's too cute!
Welcome to America! I hope you enjoy your visit to Austin, TX, ❤️ There’s an antique mall in Round Rock, which isn’t too far from Austin called the “Antique Gallery of Round Rock” if you’re interested! It’s pretty big so I recommend wearing some comfy shoes especially if you like walking around every booth and looking at all the neat stuff like me 😂
I love that cross stitch frame! We call those trees "aromos" here in Chile and they're one of my favorite...they flower in July, they make Santiago's hills yellow😍💛 Have a nice trip to the US, so fun! Thrift shops there are amazing!!
Comfort, Texas is not far from Austin if you can drive there it’s really worth a look at the town. Fredericksburg is really really cool also. Austin is a very funky artsy place I think you will really enjoy.
There’s a pretty interesting tradition behind your beer boot. German soldiers would pass around a leather boot, filled with beer, before a battle. One of the beer houses in Melbourne serves beer in glass boots like that.
@@RoseryApparel I‘m from Germany and many Bars have those boots somewhere, usually up on a door frame. They‘re quite popular among locals to use them for pranking people who have never had their beer from a boot, because if you hold it wrong (tip pointing away from you I think) it creates a sort of seal for the beer and then everything that was on the tip just sprays in your face all at once. Best way is to hold the tip to the side, I believe.
That boot glass is probably a souvenir from Germany. It looks like the ones usually used here. It is for drinking beer, sometimes shared around a table. But be carful if you try that, because when the rest of the beer comes out of the toe area, it comes fast. :-)
That basket is divine! In the US, we have a chain of fabric and crafts stores called Joann. There are a couple in the Austin area. It would be interesting to see your impression of that store and how it compares with Spotlight. There are also quilting fabric stores in the Austin area. Enjoy your trip to Texas!
Hi Janelle. I thought the fabric would be my favourite of your op shop finds. But it has to be the House Book closely followed by the cover of the bread maker notebook. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. 🌸
I love your op shop videos….i think you have better op shops in tassie than where I live in CQ. Austin Texas! What a shock!…was this planned? Have a great time…I look forward to seeing you in cowboy boots a a ten gallon hat! Some of the quilting shops have lovely cotton fabric much cheaper than Oz…
Storing recipes in your phone is fine for day to day use but writing them down old school fashion is the best way to ensure they’ll survive as a keepsake for your loved ones after you’ve gone, don’t you think?😊
Janelle! Love that you invite us to thrift with you- fun to see your treasures. Austin is an awesome choice for your first visit to the U.S. My favorite tees from there are tie-dyes that say Keep Austin Weird. You definitely want to be sure that you have clothes for hot humid weather. I live in Oklahoma about 6 hrs north of Austin. Texans are very friendly, love to eat good food, and drive like bats out of (you know where). Wish I was closer would love to run into you, say "howdy", and see you in one of your lovely dresses. Safe travels!!
Welcome to the United States. You are definitely going to the cowboy state!! You are coming at a time before it gets really hot. Be sure to bring sunscreen!
I just saw that glass boot’s twin at a thrift shop!! If you’re coming near Missouri I’ll run back and get it for you! (Can’t remember if it’s an exact match, I thought it was a vase thing?)
You have purchased perfect finds for both yours and Matthew's interests. This is fabulous. With you studying interior design like l have, l look forward to seeing how your home develops. 😊 The Wattle Flower Cross stitch is a perfect touch to your Australian home I hope that you enjoy your time in Texas. Is this a working holiday?
@@RoseryApparel Thanks! I found a winter dress, a jumper, and a sweater vest 😊 didn't have time to go through all of their sewing patterns though - they had heaps!
😂 I think the reason you can't find any fabric at the op shop is your own popularity. Everyone who watches you now goes to the op shop looking for fabric and sheets. 👩🌾🐑
Depending on the area that you're going to be visiting I have a few fun things to experience while you're in Austin! I lived there from 2010-2011 so hopefully everything that I enjoyed is still there!! South Congress has some cute shops and a nice food truck lot. Uncommon Objects was an antique store that was pricey but really cool. St Vincent DePaul is a fun thrift store. There's also the bat bridge that crosses over to downtown. Magnolia Cafe has the best fish tacos! South First is nice. There used to be a couple of vintage clothing stores there. Bouldin Creek Cafe is nearby. They have the best vegan bacon! My favorite was the BLT! Gordough's Donuts is a MUST have! Their donuts are so unique and delicious. You definitely need a nap afterwards though. Zilker park is great. Grab a couple of subs from Thundercloud subs and head to the park for the day. You should try to see the botanical gardens and take a ride on the Zilker Zephyr. Also take a dip in Barton Springs! It'll be super toasty when you're there so a swim in the (always 60 degree) water will be refreshing! If you get a chance to take a hike on the greenbelt there are a few swimming holes along that too. If you can I'd suggest seeing a movie at The Alamo Drafthouse (the one on 6th street!!). If you like scary or weird movies checkout a terror Tuesday or weird Wednesday. Both are a great time and just a really fun experience. There are some nice things on the east side too. Sawyers is a really cute restaurant that looks like a 50's backyard, complete with astroturf. They have great breakfast food. South Austin has Kerby Lane cafe (the vegan queso and Paris Texas are the best. In the summer they have tomato pie and that's delicious!). Savers is a great thrift store down there. Uchi is a must have experience if you like sushi. it's on south Lamar. If you want any other ideas feel free to reach out! I love Austin!!
Hoping this doesn't happen to you but when trying to brew beer it exploded in the yeast process so please be careful. I collected antique pink glass, the glasses are so beautiful and unique.
I’m not sure why that would be the last state you’d recommend. I lived in Austin and there’s so many good places to eat. Loads of cool thrift shops. Plenty of coffee shops. Not to mention friendly people. So yeah I’m a Texas girlie ❤
Places to eat in Austin: Curra's Grill on Oltorf (it looks rough but is wonderful, crowded and the mocha chocolate cake is incredible), Stubb's BBQ is staple, Stubbs also has a venue for music shows. There are several good steak houses but I don't know which to recommend. Pappasitias (sp) on I 35 as well as Poppadeaus are great (there are few of these in the US all part of the same group, but worth the visit.) I have not found fabric that is not a US brand or that is culturally local, however, I would love to hear about any. I live an hour and 1/2 north of Austin and occasianally find my way there. Especially, if I am flying somewhere. I would like to find out how to locate local/cultural fabric shops. I hope you enjoy Austin, Spring is full of pollen and insects be prepared if you are walking in grassy areas.
Check your border security rules before taking the basket to the US. We took some baskets with us when shifting from nz to uk, and then couldn't bring them back in to nz :(
If you want to see a real phenomenon in Austin Texas. Check out the hundreds of bats. Starting in late March and continuing through early fall, North America's largest urban bat population calls Austin home. The bats begin to wake up and start their night flight around sunset. The first few bats begin to trickle out from under the bridge then. After the sun sets, the show really begins, and hundreds to thousands of bats pour out and cascade East over Lady Bird Lake. The best time to witness the bats is around sunset, but the nightly show can take place anywhere from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. It can take as long as 45 minutes for all of the bats to exit the bridge for the night. Plan to arrive early in order to find parking and get your spot.
It might be a little over done but ABGB is a great outdoor brewery/restaurant in Austin which I always love to go to when I'm there. Otherwise hitting up the Buffalo Exchange (thrift shop) and another mildly bespoke place called "Pavement" it's kind of expensive but worth the look!
I’m in Louisiana. Close but not that close. Another UA-camr is from Austin. Crystal Heart. She is a quilter and shops at a store called craft thrift. Check her out

Hey Janelle, some cool finds. The boot would be cool as a vase. The House book is my favourite.

Well done - I op shop all the time. You have to go often to get the gems. Loves the fluted pink champage glasses ✨
On my Austin list is Austin Creative Reuse:) great little thrifty craft store

Thank you so much for taking the time to share all your recs Lisa!! I’ve screenshotted your comment and will add these to the list 😋🧡
Hoping this doesn't happen to you but when trying to brew beer it exploded in the yeast process so please be careful. I collected antique pink glass, the glasses are so beautiful and unique.
One of the kegs did explode!! Luckily we had moved them to the shed before it happened 😅
Texas?!? That would be the absolute last state I would recommend but I hope you are having fun!
Love your haul 😍
Haha didn’t really have a choice as Matt’s here for work and I’m just tagging along, but so far Austin is a vibe!
I’m not sure why that would be the last state you’d recommend. I lived in Austin and there’s so many good places to eat. Loads of cool thrift shops. Plenty of coffee shops. Not to mention friendly people. So yeah I’m a Texas girlie ❤
Terry Black BBQ 👍
Thank you for these!!
Check your border security rules before taking the basket to the US. We took some baskets with us when shifting from nz to uk, and then couldn't bring them back in to nz :(
Do a shoey with the boot glass 😂
The basket,
Ok but those books 🩷
A lot of people have recommended the bats and I’m so excited to see them for myself! 😄
Im in Austin, Beehive Craft Studio!!
Oh yay!! I’ve got your shop on my list and am hoping to pop in soon 😄
@@RoseryApparel It's not my shop but one of my favs. Austin Pets Alive Thrift, and Uncommon Objects for thrifting.
Thank you!! I’ll check them out 😄
Ok, but that maternity pattern you got, and those Beatrix Potter books you ALMOST got except for they were so expensive.... Are you giving us hints?
I’m in Louisiana. Close but not that close. Another UA-camr is from Austin. Crystal Heart. She is a quilter and shops at a store called craft thrift. Check her out
Have I missed an announcement? That Mccalls 6444 pattern is a maternity jumpsuit and dress.
Right? I thought as well! And her wanting those Beatrix Potter books...
I mean, she was also talking about beer tasting 😅🤷🏼♀️
