Tips And Comments:
- Playing Technique:
Played next to the neck pickup with high strength. Bridge pickup volume at 0
- Gear Sound:
All effects and processing are digital. For most of the parts i added a fuzz wah pedal with middle amount of fuzz, high compression and boosted mid frequencies. Also a little treble added. For distortion parts i added high frequency distortion into the mix
- About The Song:
I had to play the solo separately, mostly because i don't own a distortion pedal or some thing that allows me to change effects between part of the song, and i needed distortion for that solo in order to play it well

Can you please do a cover of "Big Machine", by Ryan Miller, from movie "Safety Not Guaranteed
let's all agree cliff was a beast
ojp _15 Metallics was never the same after he died
actually people die and fans should move on
Traveling Outdoorsman yeah, but if you left a mark in history, then you should be remembered. Like, say, Abraham Lincoln.
@Mexico City dude he wanted to say beast which is different than best

what grade do you think it is
Alasdair Round wdym
@@bach1500 from 0 to 10, what grade you give to the solo
JVMachado789987 Compared to my capabilities, a 10, but compared to some others I’ve seen before probably a 6
6:34 i always thought that was played by guitar... Holy shit
Karl-Johan Lagström He was that amazing yes.
Most people think that the 2 bass solos in this song are guitar solos
Cliff did wonders man.
So did I 😂🤦♀️
Lol so did I until a few years ago ! Amazing
Here are the timestamps for the big major sections so you can find the tabs for them.
0:58 - Main Riff
3:59 - Secondary Riff
6:36 - Bass Solo
7:02 - Third Riff
yeah nice but he plays the start wrong
drainmudvayne27 yeah we now know that
Not enough distortion, and it sounded too light.
but you missed my favourite part the break riff by Cliff 1:41
helpfull
God I wish Metallica still did instrumentals like this.
What about Suicide & Redemption? ;)
They almost did one with Inamorata, almost....
@@HerenBass glad they didn't,would have Been a bit empty without the lyrics
They did on Death Magnetic
@@corwin81they did suicide and redemption, in my opinion super underrated
We did “Orion” almost at the same day) It's interesting to compare our versions: on 22 and 24-fret basses. By the way, very accurate bass solo work! Pearl of the song \m/
Andriy Vasylenko your version was just as great, practically identical to Cliff's work. you're my favorite bassist on youtube bro!
you can compensate by playng the lower harmony
It took 3 years, but I'm the 420th like!
And we also have the same basses. (Not really same, I have Ibanez GSR 180)
So what's the difference? Am I missing something different between both versions?
Never been a big Metallica guy. Now I understand why Cliff Burton was so revered.
Welcome to the metallica family then
You wanna really hear what Cliff could do, listen to Anesthesia: Pulling Teeth from Kill'em All. He did that solo in one take dude.
@@marklastes312 I will check it out.
@@marklastes312 you nailed it. That song is a bass wet dream.
You are now a Metallica guy
6:35 is where I stop playing, grab my drink, and toast Cliff.
Takes some time buts it’s a relatively easy solo
@@butteredtank9471 Literally can't play it; none of my basses have that many frets. Might have to get use a whammy pedal, lmao
@@swissarmyknight4306 if you have 21 frets and some strong fingers you can bend up to the first note, or just play the solo a step down
5:40 - 6:17 is nothing short of spiritual to me. Cliff was such a creative genius. He truly elevated the bass to fine art in this song.
And that started with Anesthesia. Just WOW!
I totally agree.
@Cameron no shit it was wasted he died so early
@Cameron Try listening to spatial versions of Cliff Metallica and prepare for your mind to be blown. Cliff was superhuman.
@Cameron i think Metallica knew this to a degree and didn't want to make the same mistake twice. Did you see when Les Claypool tried out for Metallica after Cliff died? They literally told Les he wasn't hired because he was "too good"
This is Cliff's masterpiece. RIP legend
Riley Young he was genius indeed !!
Amir Nurikić yes, masterstrious indeed.
This and anesthesia pulling teeth, plus all his solos
@@butteredtank9471 Although impressive, Pulling Teeth didn´t have the sheer beauty of this piece.
@@headsetsquirrel2581 I never said it was better

no, the bass solo was written by cliff
I was actually named after this song
Your parents are awesome for that.
+Orion West That's awesome!
+Orion West NICE!
That is fucking Awesome.
I'm named after Obi Wan from Star Wars, Well in the original he went by Ben Kenobi.
+Orion West Orion (Ωρίων/Ωρίωνας) is actually a Greek name, origins from the Ancient Greek Orion, who was a hunter (I think) in the Greek Mythology.
Finally someone plays the main riff correctly. Well done.
It is good but not "correct" as in the same way Cliff played it. There isn't any percussive tapping of the strings, needs to lower the action and slap those babies
jim my shit, please dont comment that thins and have fun!!
You are illiterate and cannot put a sentence together. Listen to Cliff play it. It is different from how this guy does it!
jim my so?
Andres Palma because it sounds different when you play in a recording studio room.
I hope people understand what makes this cover AMAZING. Not only is it played to perfection/imperfection, but to actually nail Cliff's tone by playing HARD enough at that speed is next level 🙏
my bass teacher assigned this song as my first song with 16th notes and this is so helpful 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Beautiful. Just beautiful.

6:35 does it for me. I almost tear up when I hear that first note. Then 6:44 is when I lose it.

So youre still playing bass or you gave up after this? Hehe
At around 2:15 when the solo ends, the muting between notes is brilliant. Just pairs so nicely with the drums, you really did this well. I believe Cliff would approve 👍

literal goosebumps from the riff at 5:40 to 6:17
The fact that his death still affects so many of us, man. I wonder if that’s how fans of Nirvana felt after Kurt’s death. RIP 💗💗

The Call Of Ktulu
Omg. I thought so many years that the bass solo in 6:36 was from guitar and I was playing my electric guitar with this solo in the backing tracks. And I was thought that it was for guitar. From this moment I will stop playing the solo with bass. Respect.
As a guitar player, I’m always paying attention to guitar in songs, but it opens up a great evolution to listen to the other instruments in a song we wanna learn
I gotta give cliff an jason kudos each one of them brought Metallica to higher levels in music.
80s cliff was the glue also the bassist god lol.
90s Jason just killed everything he touched but in a good way an made that much better.
2000s to current Rob is just showing 100% he can roll with the legends and make them sound great.
This is probably my favorite metal song of all time. I'm glad Metallica doesn't take down cover videos like these, yet.
Awesome job! I was a senor in high school when MOP came out and watching you play Cliff brought back the same emotions that I had first hearing it all those years ago (Yes. That's 35 years. Wow) Orion has always been the best song on a perfect album . Thank you. You made my day.
Bajistas:

Came back to this after I first watched it religiously in 2014. Was amazed at how much better I felt playing it! Thanks for all your work throughout the years man. It's fun to play along to your songs
I picked up my bass after years of not playing and this will be the first song I’ll try to learn
How could someone not like this song. Everything about it is a masterpiece. It is absolutely beautiful.
This song is one of my favorite and probably my ultimate goal in my journey of playing bass
My bud who passed several years back would be proud of you. This and FADE TO BLACK were his favorites. The band he was in, and his dad, his dad hated metallica, why i don't why, but he learnt FADE and ORION for his son.
Was the most heartfelt and emotional performance I have ever experienced
Well, now I know for certain that 1/8 IS a real time signature.
I must've listened to your cover about 30 times this week. Absolutely stellar. I hope to get to play it as well as you someday.

Just picked a bass for the first time a week ago, this is my goal. Badass dude
This song is the reason I got a bass
It always an honor can play this song on bass, Cliff was a genius.
Thank you for putting up these videos, thanks to you now I can play this song.Keep up the great work. Greetings from Canada !
+Fred Pineau Thanks for watching!
+CoverSolutions Favorite Metallica song right here...and you just made it 100% better!!!🎸🎼
+CoverSolutions Do you play solely on that T24? What's your opinion of that bass compared to a similarly priced Squier or Fender Jazz?
+TheVersatileWalrus he uses it for everything. I'd say get this over a squire. But between this and a fender, just whichever you want really.
Can’t think of a better cover of this on UA-cam. Superbly done my friend.
RIP cliff Burton.. you still the best for Metallica
this is the most accurate cover I've ever seen and your tone is on point
That was awesome! Thanks.
The tab looks (and sounds) way more accurate than the old Bass-Songbook published back in the day.
I think what makes cliff such a technically phenomenal player more than anything was his stamina
This guy plays Orion virtually flawlessly! Excellent work!!! 👍
ive been playing bass for a few months and you are my biggest inspiration, keep up the good work
Gorgeous cover! Great skills... can't understand why someone dislike this.
Cliff is no doubt one of the best bassist ever. He went to soon.
excellent version I listen to cliff only almost every day and might see a doctor about it and this was very very great best cover I've heard!!
The middle section of this song always reminded me of some old Scandinavian folk tune. Just brilliant.

that bass solo around 6:50 is amazing
There is so much more to this bass part than even the human ear can discern from the albums. Cliff threw so many details in there which probably get missed on the tablature sites and definitely on most covers.
Excellent cover of this amazing bass work of a song!!!
R.I.P cliff Burton. One of the best bass players of all time
I've literally been trying to play that damned solo since I heard of this song and it's driving me NUTS!!!!
HOW!?!?
EDIT:hell yeah, Ive been practicing and finally got most of it down
Can you play it now?
I promise you no ones a bass king - The only thing that seperates us is the amount of hours we practice. If you practiced as much as the pros do, you'd be just as good as them.
@@daveharris514 except Geedy Lee and Steve Harris haha
@@caio42631 No, even them, just since this lockdown started, my playing and speed has almost doubled, and its only been 6 weeks, those guys play and practice every day - Nah you'd probably be even better than Steve Harris👍🏻🙂

john smith Cliff used his pinkie more on his right hand, but yeah he is pretty spot on
You make it look so easy. Can you do "holy wars the punishment due" by Megadeth
Oh I feel like I haven’t listened to Metallica enough lately. I went through all of their OTHER instrumental songs before i remembered that bass riff/solo-ish thing that popped in my head was from THIS SONG. Thank you for doing this video! I will always be grateful that Metallica has had amazing bass players, but I’m even more grateful that they finally have more live recordings where you can really hear the bass parts now!! Anyone wanting some awesome riffs to play, I HIGHLY recommend the one that starts around the 04:00 or so. Awesome, and fairly easy to learn (going by speed) compared to the faster stuff usually played in most of their songs.
I thought most of the solos and the Riffs were on a guitar and not a bass but in my surprise cliff was even better than I thought, what a legend
Standing ovation. Your fingerpicking is great. I've been weening myself off of the pick. My damn fingertips feel like I took them to a belt sander.
Wish I could use a pick. It's a skill I've never learnt and a great one to have in the toolbox.

Just found your channel while looking for vids about the Washburn T24 (just got one myself). Thanks for taking the time to make so many kick ass videos man.
The deepest Metallica's lyrics so far. 😢
I got scared when the bass solo came. JUST LOOK AT ALL THOSE NOTES!!!! You rarely ever see 32nd notes played on bass. To add to that, you're supposed to play it with your fingers.
I wouldn't say rarely ever. It depends on what genre you play in. In extreme metal when you're doubling the guitars and drums, that's not at all uncommon.
+Locke I know it's common with guitar shredders, and drummers can have fast patterns. However, I said 32nd notes on BASS. You rarely see bassists with the skill to play that fast (and no, playing the same note extremely fast doesn't count)
Manu Perez That's exactly what I meant. 32 notes on bass aren't uncomon in extreme metal. Please reread my comment. I didn't use "doubling" for no reason.
***** sorry, you only said doubling guitars and drums. I thought you didn't see the "bass" part of the 32nd notes, because you didn't mention it.
I don't really listen to extreme metal though, so I don't observe this type of fast playing much.
Am McBush Do they use it for bass solos though? I think that's really the part I was impressed about with this.
I haven't listened to death metal yet. I like metal with a bit of melody in them, as in the perfect balance and fit of thrash and melody together.
Beautiful. Cliff is the reason I started playing 26 years ago.
