This is by far the best tut I have seen on Local Vol fog on internet. The scene itself is so very compelling. Would love to see a video on the scene set up too.
Thank you for the super kind words, will probably make an updated version of the volume fog at some point. Maybe I should do an update of this environment at the same time lol. Thank you for the suggestion :)
Fantastic and really helpful video. I've spent ages messing about with Niagra trying to get a decent volumetric fog. Ended up with a result that was fairly expensive and difficult to control. The approaches outlined here got me exactly what I needed. I also now don't have the problem that I did with Lumen light jitter. Thank you!
I'm really glad that it's helpful for you! I'd love to make the volume fog look a bit better from the side but a lot of this shader stuff is hard for me lol.
Returning here 2 years after I first saw the video, I realised just now how much I have learnt. I am so grateful for your channel, everytNice tutorialng
Okay I can't stand this seriously now, how tf are you so underrated man?? Like 60K views but only 6 000 subs? This is a crime. You earned yourself a subscriber man, keep it up 👍
ahaha thank you so much, you just made my day. Honestly I feel lucky to have come this far with this channel, the numbers aren't anything to boast about but it's really helped me in a lot of ways. Cheers for the kind comment, really appreciated :)
Thank you SO much for the kind comment, much appreciated. I was looking for ways to create local fog in UE for the longest time as well. Which was why I made the video when I finally found some methods
im just starting and tNice tutorials video was perfect.Well explained and easy to follow for a beginner.I never understood soft soft till i watched tNice tutorials.
yep alot of youtubers post "Tutorials or how to" but it doesnt teach you how to do it. just showing the world that "he" did it. lmao. thanks for this video. subbed
Thank you for the kind comment. I agree that it's sometimes frustrating when you don't get the information you want, but at the same time I understand all too well, making detailed tutorials are time consuming and tedious lol
Hey, Thank you for the tutorial! I have an issues with the note, cant find "ObjectLocalBounds" in Misc category, I have a different ObjectLocalBounds in vector category and the values are different and I've trying to connect to all the options and nothing works for me :( And again thank!
you can search for it in the content browser, it's in one of the Engine material functions folders. In the project root of your content browser search for ObjectLocalBounds and just drag it to your material graph.
Hello, I'm not 100% sure because I haven't tried but I don't think there were any UE5 specific nodes or anything. Should work, thank you for the kind comment :)
Updated volume fog tutorial : ua-cam.com/video/pYLhnsRvHR4/v-deo.html !! PLEASE READ !! If you are having issues with the volume fog, here is a list of things you can try : 0. 14:52 has me searching for the ObjectLocalBounds node, this is not searchable anymore from the material graph in 5.3. No idea why. But you can search for it in the content browser, it's in one of the Engine material functions folders. In the project root of your content browser search for ObjectLocalBounds and just drag it to your material graph. 1. Engine scalability - Epic or higher 2. Adjust exponential height fog density and visibility in the scene 3. Make sure you have ticked 'Volumetric fog' in your exponential height fog 4. Double check that you have the settings correct in your 'Transform Position' Node (14:22) 5. Instead of the World absolute position node & transform position node, you can try using Local Position node and use local position pin. 6. If nothing works, it is most likely to be some kind of bug with UE5. Try a fresh project. Update GPU driver, reinstall the engine and try again (this actually solved it for some people) 7. If you can't find the Perlin noise texture for any reason be sure to check 'Show Plugin Content' in your Content browser settings 8. Try different noise textures (there are several included in the base engine install, or google it). Some textures look better than others.
@@-A-L-T Go to Directional light, there will be a setting for volumetric scattering light, crank that up/down. If it still doesn't appear with it on in heightfog & the D-light scatter still turned up, Press G & if you see it, you need to start the engine to fix the Shader issue.
Hey great tutorial...hoping you could possibly clue me into why my fog is black? i set color fog of to white on the scale...not sure what to do with black fog??
Thank you! Umm if your emissive value is low it should appear faint, the only reason I can think of is the color settings. Have you checked that the node is definitely not set to black? Can you maybe show me a screenshot of the node tree?
Cheers, there's a string of nodes from around 4:10 that does the edge fading, combined with the depth fade, it should be enough to make it quite soft. If the parameters you've set up in the Material instance isn't doing anything, I'd double check if there weren't anything that is different from how I set it up in the material.
Hi thank you, I got a similar message from someone else so I checked just now and it's working for me in 5.0.3. Make sure you are using a JPEG sequence (not MP4, MP4 isn't working with DX12 atm). If nothing works, I recommend starting a fresh blank project and trying it there first.

Thank you for tutorial. I have a question, which mode is preferred? is volumetric fog more resource demanding than other 2? Also I understand that other two modes cannot be applied to 3d objects, am I correct? this means if for example in a game, player go through 2d fog, they will see its edges, am I right?
Yes you are right but media fog is actually the most expensive in this case. Although you could make it cheaper with lower res etc but it's still quite heavy. Try this for volume fog ua-cam.com/video/pYLhnsRvHR4/v-deo.html Updated, much better and detailed volume fog
THANK YOU for saying which buttons you’re clicking! So many tutorials don’t do this. This is awesome.

Thank you for the kind words, I heard fog should now work with Pathtracer in 5.1. But haven't tried it yet.
