Don't be discouraged, at the end of the day you would probably use your own unique and optimized assets anyway. Megascans actually aren't perfect and have many flaws when you try to apply them for real production
I hope they do something similar to what they currently do on the Unreal Marketplace with the Free For The Month stuff. Have one Megascans pack be free per month so that we can build a library of assets over time.
The quality of 3d content generation is improving significantly. If it's a relatively simple model/texture, it's starting to be a viable candidate with little to no post processing.
Unity take this as their opportunity to bounce back. Unreal has a great Ecosystem as because they are virtually free. Unity realized their mistake and perhaps rectify themselves to be floated.
I agree on all the points. Some MegaScans should stay free to help with the onboarding, but having all of them free as they were now hurt the perception of other assets being sold. MegaScans should have two tiers: low-poly and up to 2k textures should be free; this way, you can still use them for prototyping and learning. 4-8k and high-poly should be paid, as they would be used for production projects.
At least technically, the free ones could still be used for production as long as they are in the background. You might even prefer the free ones for that use-case.
No need though. They can just use the same licence agreement Unreal engine has: It's free for you to download and use, but if you make a game or whatever that starts making bank, Epic gets a cut.
Worth remembering Epic is not your friend. I think your theory is correct but they've probably also noticed they've acquired all the users they were ever going to get through free megascans. If EGS had ever taken off then the free games would also have stopped. If Unity had never been invented Unreal would still cost millions to licence.
only he is wrong. you can start doing it now. Read the statement from unreal that this guy choose not to. It clearly says that anything you have currently in your library, TODAY, will stay there and be yours forever. In other words, TODAY if you get all the assets you will have them forever, even after the launch of Fab... like it is clearly stated in the announcement from Epic.
Whilst I can see the benefit of getting their assets for free, I'm not seeing why solo developers and small teams *need* to use Megascans. If you are producing something with the production values that demand the quality of Megascans assets, $100-$500 for some Megascans packs is going to be a tiny percentage of what you need to spend. If it's going to discourage you, yes, you should be discouraged from using Megascans, because chances are, you're not spending the money to properly optimise your scenes after you dump a ton of highly detailed assets in there, and you're not spending the money to make your bespoke models, animations, effects to the same quality level.
I was a little shocked by this, because I started learning in UE about 2 months ago, so having free assets to learn and experiment is a great and very helpfull bonus to have 🤔 looking forward to your video on the best method to get all the assets for free, keep up the good work 👍

Thanks for the info! I agree that they should have a collection of free assets available. It's what got me interested in trying UE5 in the first place. I can understand why they want to "level the playing field" as you put it, so I can't be too upset by their decision to put a price to the assets in the future. It is a bit of a bummer, though.
well dang, I've been trying to learn UE since 4.26 and this channel has been clutch so thank you for this clarification. That said, I know businesses have to make money and I'd love to get so good I can sell assets, but people are broke. I wish there was some middle ground. I didn't know UE was free, and if I had, I would have perused my dream much earlier indeed of getting a 2 year CS degree only to learn I was bad at programing. There has to be a better way.
2:39 - The assets won't be moved over but you will be able to still access them by logging into your Quixel account on their site and accessing them there.
I'm learning all the fundamentals of blueprints, and I'm starting to understand the process I'd need to go through to make my game. I still have a lot to learn but my class shooter will come along eventually!
I think your reasoning why assets will no longer be free is correct. If Fab is supposed to be a commercial marketplace it makes totally sense. Basically it's a pivot from trying to promote Unreal Engine to operating Fab as an asset marketplace that can generate revenue for both Epic Games and artists. For artists this is great news. The fact that Epic announced this beforehand is commendable. This is the way.
Great insight on why you think Epic Games is choosing to charge for Megascans after 2024. I agree with you. It seems like a wise decision to level the playing field by making FAB an attractive market for asset creators, without the steep competition from a massive free Megascans library.
Yeah, I thought the same thing that they should keep some of the assets free. Also, it makes sense about how you mentioned they should charge for some mega scans to hopefully encourage people to buy other people’s products.
Not clickbait when the info in the title is true and informative - I'm a Unity user, have purchased Megascans assets before and didn't know that their entire current library is now free for me to use in Unity, and that I can acquire it for free until 2025 and keep those assets forever. Quixel is also refunding people who still have credits and didn't spend them.
I agree, it seems like a well thought out move. Evening the playing field for contributors to have a Fighting Chance to earn some money on the assets that they create. I like that they're throwing us a bone for the next few months, to get the assets for free.
Oh, I'll have to download everything while I can as soon as I can. Of course they are most certainly worth the price, but being on a very, VERY tight budget, getting them free is much better! I wonder how will it work with all the megascans packages that are available in the current marketplace. And other assets I've bought/gotten for free in the marketplace. I assume those that are in my vault, will still available once the transformation to Fab starts....
Eh, I have the gut feeling that, considering how taking away something from people breeds animosity, this may just be a move to force a huge wave of sign-ups to FAB upon launch. Obviously I can't see the future, but I think there is a very realistic chance that once we get to 2025 Epic will suddenly have a change of heart and revise the policy, or at least amend it so that people continue to join for the benefit of free assets, just like they've done all along. It makes no sense to give everything away for free for several months, this is not a consumer marketplace, but mostly people who - whether as pros or hobbyists - are aware of this change and will sign up and take all the free stuff while it is available. Again, I could be totally wrong - but that's precisely the point. I'll sign up asap, and grab anything that looks even remotely useful to me - just in case. And so will probably everybody else - so by 2025, everyone will be on FAB, and Epic will be all "Mission Accomplished".
I hope we still be able to share some of the assets to begginers and new users as files with 3D formats, or... our projects! As the matter of fact, making megascan paid for will surely drive enthusiasts to create their own libraries and share it through the torrent or similar sources. Yeah, the pirating is illegal, but inevitable since person doesn't have these money for each asset...
seems to happen a lot... start FREE make as much people commited as possible... even companis / trainers / tutorial ... that could previously link to the FREE item will now need to be payed for by the new users 2025
I really don’t like the change. Offering Bridge assets for free for 5 years and then charging for them is really just a bait and switch. Everyone who develops in UE5 and has gotten used to creating levels with them now has to pay for the same creations they could use for free just a day ago after the New Year. Also the pricing model is ridiculously steep. $25 for rocks that have been free for the public for half a decade is detached from reality pricing. Very few people are going to pay that, especially when they can’t be previewed in engine. Finally, this is going to heavily slow the amount of new game designers coming into the industry. Let’s not pretend like UE5 is simple to jump in and use for the average person. In fact, I would say the word overwhelming comes to mind when we’re talking about UE5. The simplicity of having Bridge be able to drag and drop a bunch of free assets and trying to then take those free assets and make something cool is the best way for new users to learn many of the world building tools. And that’s basically just going to be gone. My prediction: the fab market place is going to fail majorly, people who already use Bridge will either pirate the assets or only use what they can get for free, and new UE5 users will slow tremendously. Terrible choice by Epic. 0/10
Reading and listening comprehension on the internet is at an all time low. These people that you're talking about, that are already using these assets, are not losing them next year. They get to keep them if they claim them before January. No one is getting bait and switched, you get to literally keep them for free if you're one of the people that has been using them to create levels this whole time. Your whole first paragraph is just wrong. Your point about new people coming into the engine, that's totally valid. They'll have much fewer options now if they come into the Epic/UE ecosystem after the end of this year. That part really sucks.
It seems a well thought out change, many developers and professionals are the main target for the refresh, creating content and assets i would believe takes time, resources and manpower, wonderful to see a Corp doing some solid restructuring and forward thinking. Can't wait for FAB. PS: Do you think there's a slight chance your being allowed to use a script to Glut-Pool all those assets, don't you think they have a cybersecurity/IT dept?, c'mon for christs sake.
I wouldn't mind paying for assets if a large portion of the profits go to the independent/individual creator. Supporting an artist or a creator as an aspiring 3D artist is something I believe in.
Mhhh I mean I don't even use Unreal Engine (I just like watching these videos lmao) but these Megascans are really high quality and require a lot of work. People actually need to go out and scan real physical objects. That's a lot of work and that work isn't free so ngl, I think it's justified. Also $14,000 surely is a lot of money for one person, but...considering that that's apparently the price for ALL Megascan assets...if I imagine how you could probably build an entire AAA game with this, this really doesn't seem like THAT much relatively speaking. Plus if you're a small indie dev you'll never need all assets anyway. What they could do is they could offer a free trial version to get people into using UE for their projects.
@@DlenarVlant It's subjective really. I for example have access to every quality (1k, 2k, 4k and 8k). If you want, I can sell you another account of mine which has these assets added onto it already. Let me know
FYI I just read in some other comment reply that you don't have to download anything; as soon as FAB comes online you can just add them to your account somehow and then you have them forever. I assume just like the monthly freebies on UEM
I am very sad about this decision made by Epic This will make many people who are in poor countries or countries that do not support universal aid find it more difficult to learn. Those who pin their hopes on that free library😥😥
@@BlueBeam10 Yeah I think you might be right.... I was just hoping it wont turn out like this.. I'm still learning to create in Unreal/ Blender and rely mostly on UA-cam tutorials that have us grab things from Megacsans library and other places. But with this change happening sooner than later, I don't know how this is going to go ...my very core is telling me they will become the Villain to ALL creators ( Blender, Maya, Unity and more ) and there will be nothing we will be able to do about it.
Its how it always worked. Remember Maya being cheaper than 3dsmax? And now its 5 times more. Remember Nuke being free, and after killing Fusion they gained almost Monopoly?
I have never used megascans but obviously its sad that its no longer free. However, I see the merging of all different sites as a great way to give consumers a more streamlined experience where they will be able to find what they are looking for a lot easier.

What I thinkin about this situation - Unreal Engine 3 was paid and it's cost was very big. But after some time thay make 4th engine free but if you make good game and sell this game for good money, you must pay a % to UE devs, so I think, after some time UEngineers will do same thing with fab
I am wondering if Epic will have Megascan bundles on the Free for the month marketplace. That way we can still get assets periodically without the price. Though if they are as low cost for Low Quality, as in this video that may not deter people from UE as much as might be expected
This just pulls the ladder up for new devs. I am just starting and I’m going to have to fill my computer with assets just to be able to learn the system and make my game. Then if I want I to get more assets later I have to pay for everything. Not really something most new or indie devs can do. Some of us want to make a quality product that doesn’t look like something Ubisoft made 15-20 years ago. Needing to shovel out upwards of thousands of dollars to use assets. Epic gets to double dip by taking another cut of the money if your game manages to sell more than a million copies. So they have the mentality of you pay us so you can make your game and you pay us again because you actually made a successful one unlike the majority of games created. We just want them to know they weren’t successful because they don’t have to pay us twice.
Not sure if i misunderstand something. I dont see anything free there at all. Just logged in and if i want to use anything there i have to subscribe. Only Unreal Engine based stuff is free.
I encourage people to learn 3D modeling and do their own stuff, you can 3D scan by yourself too if you have a good camera. If you are able to build a good scene by yourself without free/purchased assets, that will make you an expert artist, and you can sell it too and earn from it.
On the one hand it is understandable, who in their right mind, would create paid for assets to compete with Megascans? On the other hand, having access to these assets for free allows everyone to start building great environments without resorting to build everything from scratch; which is (was?) the allure of creating in Unreal engine. Since I have no real skin in this game, I'll watch and learn.
I wish Epic would upgrade the library in the unreal launcher. It's hard enough to keep track of the assets I have now, let alone the ones I'm going to be downloading.
IMO as long as the current megascans asset remains free is eough. It is such a bold movement to make megascans free in the first place. Moreover the only way for unreal to make money now is revenue share from big studios only. Since unreal marketplace is a silent grave, most of the assets have 0 reviews😅. So it is understandable that they want to make more small money from the marketplace by balancing the market itself
Thanks so much for the video! So where does this put some of your earlier content that covers obtaining assets from Quixel Bridge and Epic Market Place?
Imagine they made megascans free for the new users for sometime? Similar to what cascedur did? They did 2 year free subscription for early users. Wish same goes for fab!
This is not an “even field”. Assents cost a shit ton of money. People sell their games for less than an asset pack cost, so it is going to be a big hit for the grand majority of people that can barely pay for a developer team, let alone a solo developer. Check the terms of service, as far as I remember, all the assets you get from the UE store will remain free after the migration, unless there is something I missed or changes have been made.

I guess we're gonna start massdownloading everything before it goes $$$, or hope that someone's gonna host a "pirate" cloud with everything
No need though. They can just use the same licence agreement Unreal engine has: It's free for you to download and use, but if you make a game or whatever that starts making bank, Epic gets a cut.
sounds like a scam to hook us into using the assets when they cost money again
I'm surprised this won't become a subscription service
Worth remembering Epic is not your friend. I think your theory is correct but they've probably also noticed they've acquired all the users they were ever going to get through free megascans. If EGS had ever taken off then the free games would also have stopped. If Unity had never been invented Unreal would still cost millions to licence.
THANK YOU I kept seeing so many people like you said panic downloading. Thank you for clarification!
only he is wrong. you can start doing it now.
This hurts and discourages solo-developers and small teams who doesn't have money to spend on development.
That's what big corporations want. Indie games are killing their market and they are going to end indie game development
I was a little shocked by this, because I started learning in UE about 2 months ago, so having free assets to learn and experiment is a great and very helpfull bonus to have 🤔 looking forward to your video on the best method to get all the assets for free, keep up the good work 👍

I love your take on why the made the assets paid, great job as always!
thank god I found this information only 7 days later... thanks! (about to buy a 4T ssd)
I agree with you, and this is something the whole community needs to ask for so the barrier of entry isn't too undesirable. Everything used in sample content should be free, as it helps new people coming into the scene.
Thanks for the info! I agree that they should have a collection of free assets available. It's what got me interested in trying UE5 in the first place. I can understand why they want to "level the playing field" as you put it, so I can't be too upset by their decision to put a price to the assets in the future. It is a bit of a bummer, though.
it's just shitty beancounter greed. it's not surprising, but it's still small-brain thinking.
Thanks Unreal Sensei!
I have a feeling all this was planned ahead of time, they knew what they were doing since the beginning.
well dang, I've been trying to learn UE since 4.26 and this channel has been clutch so thank you for this clarification.
I think it's a Genius move, it will help us all to develop and expand Epic Games (Unreal Engine) products related. 🙏
I am so glad I just reignited my passion for messing with Unreal. Need to grab these ASAP!
Whether this is a good or bad development remains to be seen but that name definitely isn't going to be one of Fab's selling points.
This is probably the close thing to an angry rant we'll ever see from Unreal Sensei. The guy has all the chill.
not good
Worst decision ever.
Vast sums of money making the worst decision ever. Just look at the Tech sector as a whole. A pipeline of disingenuous crap
it will kill a lot of creativity and new users...but they want that. why? censored...
Great news! Ditching Unreal for Houdini. Thanks for making this choice easier for me!
This is only great news for artists that sell assets. It’s a huge loss for the entire industry as a whole.
@@tarettime9392No it isn't, if you can't afford to spend a few bucks on assets, you have bigger problems than you realize.

Great insight on why you think Epic Games is choosing to charge for Megascans after 2024. I agree with you. It seems like a wise decision to level the playing field by making FAB an attractive market for asset creators, without the steep competition from a massive free Megascans library.
Epic : Lets take our devs for all they got, if Unity can do it so can we!
Unity: welcome back my precious
Harvest time
About time to start using those Asset Store packages we left behind :D
I'm not paying 0.99 cents per asset. The only reason I have time to play around with Unreal Engine is because I don't have a job.
Yeah, I thought the same thing that they should keep some of the assets free. Also, it makes sense about how you mentioned they should charge for some mega scans to hopefully encourage people to buy other people’s products.
Damn, 2nd clickbait video title I've seen today... Was hoping they reverted their decision.
Who's here wanted him to cover all-new UE 5.5 features, guys? 😏
Because I bet the video title is gonna be "Why UE 5.5 is an Ultimate Deal"
why do I need Unreal, when I must pay for megascans? Feels like Epic is shooting itself in the foot with this move
is CONCORDING itself in a FABulous way
Why does Epic need you?
@@MikeR.1986 Dumb question, seriously.
To make your game? (If you're making a game)
Sir plz never stop making videos
I think you are right
Really nice video, well done !
Thanks for the heads-up 👍 🍻
Thank you so much for your videos, they gave me the courage to start learning
As a 3d modeler making the playing field even looks good to me
I think they should add a subscription option as well.
I started my journey with unreal engine yesterday and now I hear this... just flippin great. What is wrong with my luck
seems to happen a lot... start FREE make as much people commited as possible...
even companis / trainers / tutorial ... that could previously link to the FREE item
will now need to be payed for by the new users 2025
I bet Epic Games' profit from Fortnite has been decreasing tremendously, hence their unpopular decisions lately
Good for everyone who is using UE right now, bummer for everyone else. Hopefully we will get some start packs that we can use for content!

I guess we won't know if FAB will be the Hero or the Villain for creators till 2025
I guess we already know. Let's not cope and lie to ourselves.

This is how Fab will build monopoly. Which is never good in a long term.
Before the free epic library was a massive incentive to use unreal engine but now new users are super restricted
Yeah! Good vibes
I encourage people to learn 3D modeling and do their own stuff, you can 3D scan by yourself too if you have a good camera. If you are able to build a good scene by yourself without free/purchased assets, that will make you an expert artist, and you can sell it too and earn from it.
They need to maybe offer free sample assets on that fab store.
FAB will go about as well as the EPIC game store
looks like i need to download everything on mega scans before the year is up
I wish Epic would upgrade the library in the unreal launcher.
I don't mind. I do think about epic games the same way they provide Unreal Engine and givaways for free! I hope Epic Games will look us the same way.
You just clickbaiting from your caption?
We needs the nanotech unity remake project to hurry up and release 🤣
megascans have always been free for all 3D software. They in fact made a quixel bridge so that you could use it with blender, maya and such.
