- One year of growth and color. Which fish has become my favorite when it comes to putting on BOTH size and color in the shortest amount of time?
What's been your experience? What fish has really impressed you with rapid growth and getting quickly colored up?
Enjoy and don't forget to comment, share, rate and sub.

Great vedioe very informative
thank you!
Ben, I really like your structured video. You have an opening presentation, then the subject presentation, and a closing. Very nice. A picture of the Forest, zoom into the trees and an ending wrapping it all up and together.
Wow, the juvies turned into some beautiful fish. Amazing how that happens. The before and after pics are excellent in showing this.
Thanks for another great educational experience.
Correction: At :51 seconds I call my Red Cap a "Placidochromis" . He's actually a "Lethrinops" Red Cap. Sorry about the goof and thank you ObsessiveCichlidDisorder for pointing out the error. Don't edit videos when it's late and you're tired, LOL!
Great video Ben, Fusco gets my vote for a great fish, mine is 7 maybe 8 inches he is a great colour passive, but nobody pushes him about, not even my giant 12inch Frontosa! Paul uk
Wow, a 12" Front could almost fit a 7-8" Fusco in his mouth, LOL. I hope he never realizes that, LOL.
Thanks for watching and commenting and greetings from across the pond.
Thank you for posting this topic. It is nice to see the growth and color changes of the fish. You are still one of the best channels on UA-cam in regards to showing the great joy and the frustrations of keeping fish. Very informative in regards to your observations of their temperament Again, thank you
Thank you Tracy for the kind words of encouagement, much appreciated.
Hey Ben ! What awesome Fish you have , the transformation of your fish within a years time is remarkable and says a lot about you on the dedication, commitment, and love for this hobby ! Great stuff and keep up it up, you make me strive for success as well!
Thank you for the kind words Miguel and I'm happy they you are enjoying the videos.
Wow what a difference the fish have after a year! Nice job Ben!
Thanks Joe. One of side benefits of videos is we can look back with a date stamp and really appreciate the changes. Even I was a bit shocked when I compared the one year old videos to how they look now.
Nice fish. Love the transformation. You are right about the fusco it can put on size and color in a hurry. Mine is about 7 inches plus and is the tank Boss at the moment. Great video. Enjoy Paradise
Hello Thomas, I'm gonna check out yours. Fusco's don't dissapoint. Thanks for watching.
Very nice you fishe.
Thanks Brantov
Awesome ben I remember those videos when your guys were little so cool to see the transformation enjoy your vacation buddy

Kevin Pitts I’m amazed 😀
Thanks for stopping by Kevin.
Thank you! Great video. Currently got all species you mentioned in my grow out tank👌
Wow, that's awesome. You're going to need a 125+ pretty quickly to put those big boys in. Thanks for watching Huss.
wow you are doing it right. good growth and colour. healthy fish!
Thank you Aqualife for the kind words.
Ahh the Fusco! You know that's my favorite.
Martell C Hello Martell, certainly one of my fav’s. Have got your tank going?
Ben Ochart Nope, i got really distracted and neglected it for 6 months. Im trying to get it going sometime soon. I’ll be sure to post it on the fb page.
Nice video Ben, I'm sure that took some time to put together. Thanks for sharing
It took a little editing trickery and it's not exactly how I was thinking, but it was done entirely on my cell phone in a hotel room on the road, so I'm not complaining too much. Thank you for watching.
Awesome video
Gerald Martin Thank you Gerald
Looking good Ben! I'm sure you have done it in the past but you need to post an updated stock list video! We wanna see those bad boys in the bug tank!
Hello Roger, It's about time for another stock update. Maybe in mid June. Stay tuned and thanks for stopping by!
Super cool vid, love to see the progression.
Corey Hecker Hey Corey, thanks for stopping by. I didn’t realize how much progression had taken place until I started reviewing one year old videos.
VERY NICE VIDEO BEN.. TWO OF MY FAVORITE FISH ARE THE STAR SAPPHIRE AND THE MDOKA WHITE LIPS....BOTH OF THEM TAKE LONG TO GROW....BUT I LOVE THEM BOTH....ESPECIALLY WHEN THE STAR SAPPHIRE SPECKALES OUT....
Hello Daniel, I actually created this video while on a business trip. If I had been home I would have featured those two fish. I love them too! The sapphire can get to 10", a real beast of a fish and I think the white lips can get up there too. But like you say, they take a very long time to get there. Thanks for stopping by. Always appreciated.
Great video Ben, those guys looks awesome after the 1 year
Efrain's Cichlids Thank you Efrain.
I've been summoned
LOL, love a sense of humor!
Hey Ben, great video, I really enjoyed it. Yep those Nimbochromis fish sure do grow quickly and get thick, as well as, pack a pretty mean punch. My gues is your Venustus will be tank boss if he isn’t already. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Hi Dennis. They sure do and yes, "Vinny Half Cheek" is now the mob boss after taking over from Poly Half Tail, LOL.
Great video Ben wow did the fish get big fast. Looking good brother
Dan the Man Cichlids 07 Hello Dan, I too was a bit shocked when I compared them to one year old videos. Thanks for tuning in!
Great vid,I have an insignus that's is the largest fish in my tank about 8" and in the past 2 months started to color . I also have a fusco, tank boss, who's always fired up,but I have a bucco notto, hawk, and venustus, who are just about the same size so just waiting to see who takes over. Sorry got off the subject, love your vids
Hopefully you'll have a relatively smooth transition the way I had when the Venustus took over from the Polystigma.
That's a good size insignus but he's pretty max'd out, so now the other guys will start to pass him up and assert dominance. Bucco notto's have been mellow when older, from my experience and hawks mind their own business, so I'm thinking it's the Venustus that will make the first move to take over from the insignus. Hopefully you'll be home and watching when it starts so you can step in if it gets too hard on one of them.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated.
Nice topic Ben. That red cap is a Lethrinops not a Placidochromis.
You’re right, I goofed , thanks!
In my experience for fastest full color it was the Sunshine Peacock (Auloncara baenschi) for fastest growth the Bumblebee ( Pseudotropheus crabro) but, for the combination of growth and full color transformation it was Nimbochromis Polystigma.
Yes, the poly started smaller, then was larger than all the tank mates...then as if overnight, the Venustus took over.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Tre kroner👈!! And the fusco, wow, right? That gorgeous blue baby 💙 well, he's a guy, so I'll say 👍🤘
How did you pick out a venustus male at such a small size?
Couple questions Ben...During this time did you add buffers to your water to keep a higher ph and what foods did you feed, how was your water change schedule? Cause u are definitely doing it right.
Hey SoCal, How's it's going! Food is mostly NorthFin pellets with some ZooMed spirulina flakes a few times a week. I do a 20 - 40% water change once a week and I use aragonite substrate to help with buffering, my tap water is pretty hard and pH is 7.8 - 8.0 with a temp o 78F.
I'm thinking about a video called, "Fish Fertizer" that details all I do. Stay tuned my friend.
My fusco grew to 4 inches in a very short time then he decided to jump out. So I've got another one the very same day
Hate it when they find that one opening and commit suicide
You could tell by my avatar it's my favorite fish also
Steve's Aquatics Fish Brothers 😀
Gotta say.. and I keep saying whenever I see it... Those little glass thermometers with the single suction cup.. Bad bad bad idea in the tank.. The larger fish in the tank rattle it against the glass to the point of breaking it and expelling its contents (lead) down into the tanks substrate.. (Has happened to me now twice.. So I do not attribute it to being a fluke or it being a "one off")
The fish will then eat it and.. unfortunately Die.
I would recommend to you Ben that if you do intend on using this type of thermometer that you think about placing 2 suction cups on it to keep it from being rattled against the glass.. Like you just trying to pass on helpful info that can save allot of grief in the tank.
Great tip Larry, thanks!
Do the venustas get on with rubin reds etc
Ruby Reds are on the docile side from my experience. You might get a mild mannered Venustus, then you’d be okay.
thought you were the "FHRITP man" XD
I was missing my dose of ochartiochromis
Hello Kevin and I'm glad you stopped by!
First
LOL, did you watch the video?
Yes, of course. Very colorful fish, I can only hope mine will look like that in about a year. Great channel and content.
Glenn Holzlohner Thanks Glenn 😀
