Also, just a note: To all the people who had nice things to say about my jokes, THANK YOU! It wasn't nearly as rehearsed (read: it wasn't rehearsed) as I'd like, but I wanted to support my friend's kickstarter and with your help we reached the goal! Thanks for supporting me, even when I'm not perfect.
To everyone who hated it/me/wants it all to die:
While I appreciate the constructive criticism in the comments section (you laugh too much, HACK!), all I ask is that you maybe consider the courage it takes to put yourself out there and make a 10 minute comedy set that you are performing live. Entertain the possibility that between working a full time job, creating weekly content for you all FOR FREE, and working on a bajillion side projects that I cannot wait to share with you, but can't right now, I didn't have months and months to rehearse this set. In fact, I wrote this set specifically for this show only a few nights before and had never performed it in front of anyone.
I was doing a friend a favor by performing at this show for her amazing website and I had hoped that most of you would understand that this is not my comedy central special. In fact, it's not even the best set I have. It's just a glimpse at what I've been doing outside of making videos for the channel.
One of the best/worst things about UA-cam is that it allows you to make contact with your audience. I can talk directly to you and you can speak directly back to me. It's a transaction. The problem, therein, is that in traditional media environments, performers don't have to deal with blowback after a stand up set. They do the set, they go home, it's over. On the internet, I get to hear critiques from a million people, oddly enough none of them are Chris Rock or Mike Birbiglia or Louis CK or Jenny Slate or even some of my amazing friends who perform all around the city to sold out crowds. So while, yes, I appreciate that you noticed I said like a bunch (how dare I be nervous), I also am not going to pay mind to most of the (very few) negative comments. It's been more than 2 weeks since that show and I'm performing more and more every day.
Suffice it to say you won't be getting more stand up for free from me for a long time.

When is the comedy gonna start?

The laugh is bad. The act is terrible. The identity crisis is legitimately brilliant.
It is 7 am, I've been up for one hour and you managed to wake me up better than the usual gallon of coffee. Only problem is that my laugh has woken up half of the building too

I thought you were so good! I don't usually comment but I read the description and some of the comments so I went in thinking it wasn't going to be good (which usually isn't a good start) but you were SO FUNNY! I wouldn't think it was your first time doing stand up - I laughed and really enjoyed it :) I'm sorry you had such a bad experience reading the comments and I'm sorry you won't be sharing your stand-up with us anytime soon - some people ruin it for everyone. Keep going though and don't let anyone knock your confidence!

UA-cam is GREAT at being like, "here's where you went wrong". Personally, I really enjoyed it, you seemed more confident about midway through your set than at the beginning. Plus your delivery was pretty awesome. I think it's okay to laugh at your own stuff, but I think in the video it was jarring because it was so loud.
The pronunciation of Ledisi's name still has me dying, smh, lol...at first I thought you were joking but then I realized that's really what you thought it was, and the tears wouldn't stop falling (sigh...I'm a suckers for name eff ups of uncommon names, don't ask me why, lol) !!!! Good job on the show...ps, your laughter is infectious, don't lose it!!

Thats a pretty solid set. 10 mins of material is like a real workload for a beginner, shoot its like telling a novice runner to go join the Ethiopians in a 5k next week. I am very interested in seeing more of it, your sit at a table funny and that can take you very far, keep it up

I thought you looked really confident up there, and as far as people saying laughing at your own jokes is not the way to go. Soooooo many comedians do that. There's nothing wrong with it. I thoroughly enjoyed this set, Akilah, despite the unrehearsed quality. That's what I loved about it! I felt like I was listening in on you conversing with your friends being clever and hilarious. I'm sorry people are giving you crap & ruining it for the rest of us. I don't live in New York, so hopefully I'll be able to see more standup from you on the internet at some point again. As someone who is often on stage, the first time wasn't good. This is really good for her first try, you have to admit. Who is incredible at first?
+Ivan Nelson That's your opinion that she die "pretty well." My opinion is that she absolutely has no sense of humor....Not even a hint of it. She's fucking terrible. The problem isn't that she didn't look like a polished performer (i get that) Its that she didn't say one single funny thing.
Well everyone has their own sense of humour and some people DID laugh because they share that sense of humour. :)

I don't get why people don't like you laughing in your set. You have a unique laugh! It made me think of Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock. Not in that your laugh was similar to theirs at all, just that you have a distinct and infectious laugh that I thought brought a nice flavor.
Can't believe that was your first time doing this set for a crowd! It went very well.
I wish I could do stand up. 2 issues: I'm nervous (I know, bad excuse), and I'm not quite funny/creative enough to make a good set. hehe

You did a great job! It's so refreshing to see female comics; it gives me hope that more females will let their voices be heard. Keep doing you, girl! :) And the "like"s in your set - I've noticed a lot of my friends say "like" throughout normal conversation. It's just a filler word, I think. I'm sure once you grow more confident in your act, you'll drop it. But yeah, overall good work! Please continue sending out the funnies!

Your Beyonce criticism was a little misleading... Ledisi was never scheduled to perform, she even said so. Common stated that Bey approached them (to do the song) and "who turns Beyonce down?!" SN: 1- Ledisi was phenomenal in Selma & (in general)

My only criticism would be that i'd like to hear transitions between jokes. And everytime you were mispronouncing Ledisi's name i was like "nooooooooooo!!"😁
Other than that i think youre hilarious, you have great comic timing and even tho i dont live in new york, i found ur jokes relatable and funny as hell. Youve got true talent😊

Screw all the negative comments here. As a comedian, this is a great performance for one of your first times! You had lots of laugh points and the audience seemed totally on board. Great set!
