the running gag there being that he is 'so much smaller than the average man', elf doors being made out like they are the doors to his dressing room and such.. (on 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown) so if men stand in a row using the public restrooms, he in a sense is the one looking up at the others..

I think it's safe to assume that they decided to divorce for reasons, so it would have been a bigger shame for them to stay together.
