    Nice work on the video!
Anyone curious about this would be best off asking a community TASser, but here's my understanding of parries:
    - Parries happen when the player's nail hitbox and an enemy "nail" hitbox overlap.
    - When a parry occurs, the game temporarily drops its timescale to 0 (freeze frames) and the player gains invincibility frames while the game is frozen. This means parries are a time loss in speedruns, unless they are for a skip or are required to survive.
    - If an enemy nail hitbox also overlaps with the player hitbox, the player nail hitbox must come out on the same physics frame as the enemy nail hitbox. Otherwise, the player gets hit instead of parrying. This means parrying attacks that would immediately hit the player are physics frame perfect.
    - This frame perfect parry timing in my experience appears to be slightly inconsistent, which might be due to the desync between when physics frames are calculated and when graphical frames are rendered (you might have heard of this as tft, or time minus frame time).
    - If an enemy nail hitbox doesn't overlap with a player's hitbox, then the player's persistent nail swing hitbox (basically, nail slashes stay out for a bit) makes parries a bit easier and more consistent. We use parries like this to perform the True Ending shade skip, parrying the shade's nail slash. But in boss fights, it's generally better to just dodge the attacks rather than staying in harm's way and risk missing the parry.
In short, I think parries were just added as something cool that could sometimes happen, or as a last ditch effort when you can't get out of the way of an attack. Kind of adds to the feeling that the fights are a "duel", especially in those fights you mentioned in the video.

The reason us speedrunners don’t use parries is a mix of risk aversion, and optimisation. The parry creates a freezeframe, that makes it significantly slower to use rather than positioning in a way where it’s not necessary and we’re still able to attack at optimal speed.
I don’t think the parry is a very deliberately designed mechanic in hollow knight, and neither do I think the fights you mentioned were very necessarily deliberately designed around the mechanic; some fights like Sly or Pure Vessel incidentally do play into that playstyle. Pure vessel and sealed vessel, since they have a parry of their own, maybe.
I think it’s a matter of getting the game-feel right. When your slashes appear at the same time team cherry must have thought it felt weird and aanted to add some ooph and an interaction on that.
As for your thoughts on mutliple damage perfect parries, that is not deliberately designed, and is instead a quirk of how this game gives bosses freeze frames upon taking damage to prevent the nail dealing damage every frame its hitbox overlaps with the enemy. This is the same reason fireballs can double hit- the parry just causes the freezeframe to prolong the hitbox staying long enough to outlast the s the enemy takes. That’s also why it sometimes clinks twice.
That being said i think it’s interesting to explore as an alternative playstyle! Cool vid :3

I don’t think there’s any bosses in HK where parrying is more beneficial than jumping out the way, considering the risk. Ironically however, parrying for i-frames is VERY beneficial against Pale Court’s modded boss, Mystic Ze’mer, when she does a series of floor attack that are super hard to jump away from. Same for infected PVP tag, where you can avoid being infected by parrying. I’ll admit when I used these strats, I didn’t realize it was a base game function, I thought the i-frames were modded into the game.

Mystic Ze'mer is actually the perfect example because the ONLY attack in that fight in which you can't rely on parries is her downward strike shockwave, for the entire rest of the fight you don't even need to *ever* jump, use spells, or dash through any of her other shockwaves, and you'll still get a great amount hits in per attack without charms. There's no way it wasn't intentional with how much you can just freely spam it. They even made her dash parriable which they could very easily not have, and her frenzy combo can be cheesed with parry i-frames too.

The perfect parry looks like what is happening when the active frames of the player’s attack is timed such that it clashes with the enemy attack hitbox twice. It probably isn’t explicitly coded to be any different, but rather emerging from the way parries as a whole work.

Yeah from what I understand and for what I have researched that seems to be the primary reason for the existence of perfect parries and not so much a intentional design similarly to how parrying and Star wars Battlefront 2 works as it is a literal byproduct from the leftover blocking mechanics in the original Battlefront which led to the creation of something unintentional but new and very useful in combat

I guess parries never took off as a mechanic in HK for the same reason movement is always a preferrable defensive option compared to blocking/dodging/parrying in platform fighters. By defaulting to movement you've got a lot of redundancy, if it doesn't work you can try the next best thing and so on, whereas parrying is the most committal option and there's no further line of defense if that doesn't work.

I’m usually someone who uses the parry mechanics in games like crazy, I’ve even incorporated a parry Strat for a boss challenge centred around pure vessel(Itemless Pogoless) for bosses like sly and pure vessel I can parry them consistently and easily, I’ve heard of the concept of a perfect parry before, but it wasn’t quite the same as what you described.
I have tons of clips of me parrying bosses, but the only double hits I seem to see is with sly, specifically his dash slash(which you can parry consistently) and his great slash, but with pure vessel I’ve done all kinds of parries, probably hundreds of times with parry Strat with pure vessel I mentioned. I never seem to double hit that tho, either bcs I have the basic parry timing down so well, or bcs it might not be possible with the way I do it.
I’d definitely want to know more abt the parry system, mainly frame data, so I can compare the difficulty of it with other games, but this perfect parry raises more questions for me, the same kind when I first heard about it a long while back. I’ll have to see more, esp with NKG, I also have plenty of clips of parries on other bosses, maybe if you have the time, I’d like to see from your judgement, whether I hit any perfect parries or not. My discord is Apelincoln4744 if you’d be interested in that, I look forward to learning more about the hk parry, but all I can say about it now is that I’m proficient at it.
Edit, I actually got perfect parries on sly’s swings so yeah it’s works(by perfect I mean the double sound so idrk)

Funnily enough I think the way I learned about parries was against Mawlek in the first hour of my playtime. His slashes were kinda hard to dodge, and simply by slashing I triggered lots of them. I still consider parries to be mostly for style points, but with limited movement abilities it proved to be pretty useful :)
Even then, as fireb0rn stated, and the way I understand it as well, if the attack hitbox overlaps with your hurtbox, the timing is way tighter, and makes defensive parrying overall less viable for most players. Especially on my potato pc which introduced lag and delay into the equation.

I am doubtful that there is any distinction between forms of parry in the game. A defensive parry is just a regular parry where you make use of the I-frames it gives. What you call a perfect parry I'm pretty sure is just what happens when a regular parry ends while both slash hitboxes are still active, so it registers another parry freezing the game again and refreshing your I-frames. I don't think it hits the enemy twice though, but I'm bad at counting hits for boss staggers so I can't tell.
What you mentioned about PV not being stopped I think just happens because of the nature of the combo attack he has. You stop him when you parry, but then he steps forward again for the next attack in the combo, so it barely makes a difference.
Also, some "nail" or "slashing" attacks don't give you an actual parry, like GPZ's nail flailing, which acts more like a spike hazard, allowing you to pogo it, but not giving you I-frames. The mere fact that you have to test every attack to learn if it can be parried, and if it can be parried safely, is already offputting enough for most people.
That leads me to the biggest reason I don't like parries, which is that, even if you defend yourself from the enemy slash, you can still very often take contact damage. It's a defensive maneuver, but its I-frames are way less useful than DD.
On a fun note, the only Hornet attack I've found parriable is her counter attack after _she parries you_ in the Sentinel fight. I only managed to do it with nail turnarounds, most of the time by luck.

When you look at them conceptually they all do the same thing however if that is the case then why are some cars called vans and others call trucks? It is because they serve inherently different purposes from each other. a defensive Perry is going to be used for just that a defensive purpose. from my findings most of the time when you go for a defensive parry specifically you are not damaging the boss You are solely using the s you get from parrying to avoid taking damage. thank you for the comment and i hope my reply helped clears things up a bit in regards to my stance on it

Parry would work a lot better in hollow knight if it didn't have contact damage, but because bosses damage you just by existing in your vicinity it ends up being a very unrewarding maneuver compared to the inherent risk since parrying in itself doesn't guarantee avoiding damage you need both timing and spacing to be right and if you can play consistently at that level of precision you can probably avoid all the attacks of the boss already and don't need to learn to parry their attacks to beat them.

I think part of the reason why parries aren’t really well documented is because the two types of skilled players, speedrunners and challenge runners, have reasons why parries aren’t useful. Parries are a time loss for speedrunners due to the freeze frames, and challenge runners would never go out of their way to do such a precise technique for minimal reward. Like personally I would never go for a pure vessel parry right at the end of an r5 run instead of just pogoing.

10:30 that doesn't look like it "stopped the attack", broken vessel just kept going? NKG also seemed to keep going in the following clip?
19:12 the child has a damage cap in that phase. So even though you got "6 hits" you only did the equivalent of ~2 nail hits
It feels like there is only 1 kind of parry and the different interactions are just the result of different hitbox sizes, attack durations etc.

@@Tubeytime I put a correction in the video right before I showed those clips talking about how for It seems to work off a form of tiering system in relation to how powerful the boss is hence why some bosses it seemingly (emphasis on seemingly) stops them and for others it slows them down.
Also I did not know about the damage cap on the child so thanks for that bit of information
Edit : I suppose I can understand how you feel about there being only one Parry however those different interactions you mentioned at least to me are different enough to at the very least call them variations of the same thing. For example you can have two cars that are both painted red however there are different vehicles they may serve the same purpose however there are different enough to at the very least be classified as somewhat distinct entities

LOL I never even knew this mechanic exist… I thought its just like a pogo effect when it happens, but its side ways so you wont bounce from the attack and still get hit (never knew it creates iFrame).
In few time I accidentally parry something, I immediately take damage, and its why I didnt know it exist… its probably because I usually panic when Im about to get hit and just dash away or towards enemy and get hit.. so even if I parry an attack, I immediately dash and still get hit by something..
