People are selling more and more tropical plants for our summer garden. it’s hard to know what will overwinter as it not generally on the label at garden centers as it used to be. I repot and bring smaller plants for the next year. Or try to:)
Hello!! I’m in Boone Iowa! I just bought some seed for eucalyptus and I saw your video. I know I’m late in starting the seed. I have a homesteading Channel as well. Fun to see you close by. Maybe we can colaberate at some point. I’m excited to see if your eucalyptus over wintered.
@wildbirdfarm thank you for the update! I'm in 7a so I was curious! We don't have the moisture problem, but we get hard freezes a lot in the Amarillo area. So I'm thinking it'd be to cold even with mulching!
@@wildbirdfarmdid you “hard prune?” My understanding is that will kill them also. Too cold for them but you can take cuttings and raise indoors to plant out when temps warm up again
Just so you know I live in zone 5b in Pennsylvania, in the mountains at that and all 4 of my plants came back this year. Even the one that hardly grew last year is back. I never covered them and they are far away from my house or any heat source.
The only way I think you may (might) overwinter them is by planting next to a heated foundation (house) on the Lee side in zone 5.

Yes, I’m brand new but would love that! I think you are fine starting now, if going to try to over winter especially! Going to follow you now!

Hi! Growing Baby Blue in Zone 5b now. About to plant them now. Where did you plant yours? Do they like afternoon shade?
No mine love all day sun! Think Australia’s hot climate. Mine even loved poor, sandy soil.
Hi! Wondering how they overwintered???
They didn’t survive our winter. I’m pretty sure the ground didn’t freeze. I wonder if it stays too wet for them?

@HOTHomestead I think you’d have a good shot there! Maybe use one of those rose bush covers??

@lesliebehrens7252 interesting- How have you taken cuttings?
Did they survive the winter?
Sadly no. I am trying again this year with some tweaks in my method.
@@wildbirdfarm best wishes to you!
Awww bummer!! I’m rooting for you! Starting mine today . First time with them. Zone 5 also! Massachusetts
@kellyromano8352 oh yay! You will love growing them!!
Is this eucalyptus pulverulenta?
Yes, I believe that’s correct!

Did they survive the winter?
This round did not. I am trying again this year, with straw bales and in our unheated tunnel.

Please let me know how this works.
@@octogirl2046 will do! I have them uncovered but no sign of new growth yet…

That’s awesome to hear! Do you get a lot of winter moisture? Our ground didn’t freeze so I’m wondering if too much moisture might be the issue.
