    I live in Utah and I am a 4th grade teacher at a charter school. Our school was upset at the thought of anyone banning books. Our library didn't have any of the books, mostly because we only go to 8th grade. Oh, and the fact that the librarian had not heard of them. I have and now I have set a goal to read them. Thanks Utah for suggesting some interesting reads. By the way, the city and county library systems have a lot of holds on these books. Ban a book and people will want to read it.

    God-DAMMIT! I can’t think of a book I want to read less.
    But to hell with puritanical censors.

    Jesus, why couldn’t they go and ban the latest Lee Child.
    Oh wait I know. Because it’s nonsense that’s NOT aimed at young women.

    The state of Utah surely has it in for Sarah J. Maas. Wow. I've been a reader for a very, very long time, and I've read a variety of books. The idea of banning books sends me right over the edge. How does any state feel they have the right to tell people what to read? A young person can be affected negatively by so many more things than just reading a book. I would think that some of todays video games would be more harmful. When I find out that a book is banned, or there is controversy, I need it in my life. I was able to get a Court of Thorns and Roses for free on Audible. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors.

    I guess I could try it. Can I count it as a GarbAugust book? I'm so not surprised that Utah is doing this. I've been reading history because I think eventually history books will be banned, and no one will be there to complain about it.

    I kinda doubt who ever the legislators are actually read these books.
    I’m 60 and in my day (can’t believe I say that 😆)
    But in my day there wasn’t really a YA genre.
    Generally after reading The Secret Garden and My Side of the Mountain type of books you just moved on to John Irving, Stephen King, M.M.Kaye, ( these are the authors I started reading in 1979 when I was 14) and so forth.
    I don’t think I’m too damaged 😆
    Anyway, long story short. I’ll join in!!

      There was a fantastic piece by 60 Minutes not too long ago about about book banning in the South. A number of books were banned in one community and they enlisted community volunteers, parents, teachers, etc. to read the books that were banned and talk about them. The number of banned books dropped from like 37 to 9! It's amazing what a little education and discussion can bring about. Happy you are a part of it group read! 😊

    When I hear of banned books it's always the US, do you know if the UK has banned any books since Lady Chatterley's Lover? Willow of Willow Talks Books attempted to read this recently and DNF'd half way through but thought it was just the thing for repressed Christian adolescents, so that makes sense why they banned it in the US. I have read some of these books and would say that I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings in particular should be required reading not banned reading. In fact I think it was for my A level English Lit that I first read it.

    12 of the thirteen books are by women writers... I thought Utah had more sense than Florida... I have read a novella by Sarah J Maas The Assassin and The Underworld, I don't remember much about it. Metamorphosis was banned or challenged? Is it because Kafka like Sarah J Maas had Jewish heritage?

    • @M-J
      @M-J  Місяць тому +1

      Yes, Metamorphosis has quite a history in Europe with fascist and communist censorship. The sheer dark and depressing subject matter in the USA I believe was the main reason. They thought young people should not be exposed to those themes of questioning life's meaning. I think heritage probably happened in Europe, but not in the states. I've heard some controversy about Mass, but I don't know the facts and really just want to read the book. 😊

    Wow. You’re like a totally NEW person without your glasses! 😀
    P.S. Kids in elementary/middle school shouldn’t be reading some of these books.
    If they’re in High School … their parents should have a say. However, can we REALLY control what someone reads in the 21st century?

    • @M-J
      @M-J  Місяць тому +2

      The government should not dictate who can read what. Leave it up to the parents and librarians to find the way. Remember parental advisory stickers? We forget that THEY ARE READING (which is a good thing) they aren't online, they aren't texting or DM'ing people, or watching Euphoria on HBO, or some other sexy TV show or movie. Stop targeting books! *gets off soapbox*

    • @laverdadescatolica5
      @laverdadescatolica5 Місяць тому +1

      @@M-J yeah! Government shouldn’t BAN stuff. Let the parents decide.

      When fascists ban books, they don't care about what's best for children. They care about restricting access to those they consider "less than." They care about demonstrating their power by getting away with doing something blatantly wrong like banning books, and getting people to defend their actions. This is exactly the opposite of what the greatest generation did in WW2 in response to Germany's banning of books.
