the reason it is hard to read classics is not because we aren’t smart but just because language changes so much over the years. it is like exercise in a way where as you do it more it gets much easier. if they tried to read an instagram caption from today they would be very much confused too.
I agree. I used to not be able to read Jane Austen when younger as I couldn't understand the dialogue, but I started off with other classics like Great Gatsby etc with more modern language, worked my way through and up and I was shocked when I later picked up an Austen novel and laughed at the dialogue, I could actually understanding what they were saying without getting a headache.
thank you for this reassurance. i tried to read jane eyre and had a really difficult time. i just started to read again for the first time in years so im trying to transition myself to be able to read it. but i definitely beat myself up for not being able to understand it

very relatable! for classics, also remember that you're not living in the era it's written, so it's easy to miss context clues. It doesn't mean we're not smart, it just means we're outside the intended audience :)
I do agree that not getting things doesn't mean you're not smart, but I do think we are the intended audience. Do writers ever write only for their contemporaries? Today it might seem like they do, but in the past I think artists spoke about universal things and about big ideas that transcend time. It's part of what makes classics appealing. You can read something written centuries ago and feel connected to it. In that way, I feel like all the humanity is the intended audience. Past and future. Sure, some context is needed with classics but there are so many resources for that if you want to get more info. We can bridge that gap pretty easily if we want to.
@@elenymm I'd say that even today, literary fiction does the same (or tries to) . It's genre fiction that is mostly aimed for contemporary readers directly.

I completely agree with all comments above! I highly recommend reading classics that are published with annotations and footnotes. Those versions are super helpful! As a history major in college and graduate student, my professors assigned certain classics in our syllabuses, and emphasized that we needed the annotated and footnoted versions because it gives context to history, culture, society, and modern interpretations to words, phrases, and lines. And, to this day, I prefer these versions!
I was absolutely infatuated with Gilmore girls in high school and I love how it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves as the best fall comfort show of all time on TikTok. We are all either a Rory or a Lorelai-this video is such good vibes!! Anything GG inspired I’ll watch. And you picked AWESOME classics!! Two of my all time favorites are The Picture of Dorian Grey and And Then There Were None!!
English is my third language and I had the great idea to try reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice as my first book in English. I stopped after a few pages because of how difficult it was for me to understand. I thought I wasn't fluent enough but turns out everyone struggles reading classics.
I get it, but you could start with something that's rather simple in terms of language perhaps secret history, its modern literature but the language is rather easy to comprehend !
damn i’m in the same situation as you. english is my 3rd language and i just started reading pride and prejudice. however it’s not as hard to understand but this is my around 50th book in English. imo starting with a couple of middle grade is going to help a lot. i got into reading in English after i read some easy books. my first book was YA and i was in THE TRENCHES. ig it gets some time for us foreigners to start understanding books in another language so you can be fluent and have a hard time! just be patient and select your first few books based on difficulty. personally i went with the percy jackson series and haven’t stopped reading in english ever since
for people who struggle with classics i do recommend to you reading the book while its audiobook is playing just like haley just did, I tried it a while ago when I also struggled, and it massively helped me reassess my reading choices
I don’t usually read classics either but starting with the audio book sounds like a good idea. Also I’m so glad I’m not the only one who started the show this year! I’m only on the first season but I already love it ❤
Gilmore girls is one of my top 3 shows I've ever watched and I'm in the middle of my rewatch right now. It made so much sense when you said you've only seen the first two seasons because I loved Rory in the beginning, but after season 3(ish), when she starts college, she starts changing... but I always loved Lorelai though! :)
I always encourage people to read classical literature and books from university level courses in English literature because the themes and tropes are the best. 😅also the twists and turns are incredible.
Sylvia Plath published “The Bell Jar”, her only novel, and the book is mentioned in the show many times. The jokes are mainly because the book is really really sad, once Loreli mentions that she is bored and Rory says she should read The Bell Jar, and then Loreli is like, offended haha. Sylvia Plath wrote amazing work, definitely hard stuff but worth reading (if you are in the right set of mind lol)

i’ve been reading the unabridged journals of sylvia plath for a while, but i love it. only about 80 pages in and i’m annotating it throughout. it’s a book that i just will pick up here and there because it’s heavy and very descriptive
The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath is one of my favorite books 📚 I have ever devoured (and I have read it more than once) in my life! A decade or so ago, I printed out the Rory Gilmore Reading 📖 List and worked my way through the myriad titles. I cultivated a lifelong appreciation for the writings ✍ of Sylvia Plath and the character Rory Gilmore. Both are massive inspirations to me.
I know classics can be hard to read but keep going, it’s so worth itttt. Christie and Dickens are some of my favorite authors!! The more you do it the easier it gets:)
I adore Rory Gilmore. She was one of the key players who got me into Plath, Camus, Kafka, and other big modern classics/classics. I also really got into philosphy since I was 12
