The WORST Goal Line Offense in NFL HISTORY | Lions @ Panthers (1999)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 бер 2022
- During week 7 of the 1999 NFL season, in a game between the Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions, the Panthers displayed some of the worst offensive ineptitude down by the goal line imaginable. Inside Detroit's 5-yard line, they called 12 plays, gained positive yardage on none of them, and lost 29 yards total. It was a shocking display of inefficiency on offense. This is the story behind that performance

I'm a Lions fan. I prefer to think of this as the greatest goal line defense in NFL history. We have nothing else. Give us this one thing.
And just when I thought the greatest goal line stand in Detroit history was the 49ers stand against the Bengals in Super Bowl 16.
Eagles vs Cardinals 1992 was the best goal line defense in NFL history. 7 plays from the 3 yard line, 6 from the 1 or inside the 1, 0 points, Eagles won 7-3.
As a 37 year old Steelers fan that has lived in Michigan his whole life, I’m always so shocked to see how loyal fans are to the Lions. So much heartbreak since the late 50s. I don’t think I’d be able to do it. 🥸
You get it my guy. I've always liked the lions since the Barry Sanders Herman Moore era.
@@matthewdaley746 I'm a Raiders fan first and foremost but I've always liked the lions since that era.
Ultimately this gsme kept CAR out of the playoffs. In Week 17 they had their "points war" with GB but came up short. In the end the final deciding tiebreaker was this DET-CAR game, which gave DET the #6 seed
Ecstatic, it's, been, obliterated.
Yes, Carolina would have made the playoffs over Detroit if they won this game because the Panthers would have been 9-7 and the Lions would have been 7-9. But just to set the record straight the Lions and Cowboys made the playoffs over the Panthers and Packers due to conference records (7-5 vs 6-6).
I'm aware. How it shook out:
First, consider all the 8-8 teams - DAL, DET, GB and CAR.
Since in a conference tiebreaker there can only be one-team per division involved, that eliminates GB since DET had a better conference record. Then CAR dropped out of the tiebreaker with DAL and DET on conference record, and DAL beat out DET for the #5 seed with a better record against common opponents (4-2 to 3-3). For the #6 seed it comes down to DET, GB and CAR. GB knocked out once and for all due to finishing behind DET in the NFC Central, and DET grabbed the last playoff spot instead of CAR due to their victory described in this video.
William Floyd, Fred Lane, Mark Carrier, Terry Fair, Tim Biakabatuka, Steve Burlein, so many names in this video took me down memory lane.
You spelled Biakabatuka correctly (I assume, it looks it) very impressive unless you are Tim then still impressed just a bit less
The worst part about this was this decided the season. Both teams finished 8-8 in 1999 but Detroit made the playoffs while Carolina didn't because Detroit beat the Panthers. If Carolina had entered the end zone all 5 times they were down there, they would've made the playoffs.
I remember watching every second of this game. I’m a huge lions fan …. It’s rare for me to think “man we should’ve lost that game… our defense saved us.”…. Very rare.
What's funny was that the Panthers had one of the best offenses in the league but their defense was atrocious. Beuerline passed for 4,400 yards and 36 TD's and the Panthers were 4th overall in scoring. They scored 30 or more points 8 times that season. And I forgot Eric Metcalf was a Panther in 1999 which means in typical Arizona Cardinals fashion, they have a winning season, make the playoffs, then get rid of the players who got them there. They don't make the playoffs without Eric Metcalf in 1998.
I’d like to congratulate myself and everyone reading this post. We had more goal line yards than the Panthers did that day.
(That Guy Alert) Considering how notorious you are with some of us for mispronouncing names, the fact that you pronounced Biakabutuka correctly is impressive.
Yah, but then he followed that up by mispronouncing Muhsin as Moosheen
As a sports fan since the early 1970s, I'd like JG9/JG8 to cross over into hockey, and take a shot (no pun intended) at the Montreal Canadiens (aka Les Habitants or Habs) from 1975-76 to 1978-79 (F you, Don Cherry), one of the NHL's great dynasties. I'm sure he would have a field day pronouncing such names as Guy Lafleur, Yvan Cournoyer, Rejean Houle, Yvon Lambert, Pierre Larouche, and Gilles Lupien.
@@bobscott2429 They're a, great, team, but, they, were, made legendary, because, The, Late, Tony Esposito, collapsed, and, The, Infamous, Don Cherry, forgot, how, to count, surreal, truly, you forgot, Guy Lapointe.
@@matthewdaley746 You're right. That was, instead, Tony's brother Phil. And don't forget Ken Dryden's backup at goalie, Michel "Bunny" Larocque.
@UCnwa57VpFYG7tXAXet4yebw They've, beaten, them, both, but, in, Game Seven, in Chicago, The, NHL's, Best, Blackhawks, were, up, 2-0, to rookie Ken Dryden, (who, actually, won, The, Calder Trophy, the following year), and, promptly gave up three, goals, in, twenty, minutes, after, they'd given up, zero, in, forty, OT, is a total, coin-flip, at, least, and, that Canadiens team, was, worse, than, the, 1967, and, 1989, teams, that, lost, The, Final, Jean Beliveau retires, but, he, (and, the, team), would have been, OK, with, a, loss, the Blackhawks imploded, and, didn't, win, another, Cup, for, 39 years, if that's, not, a, choke, nothing is.
That's really just about as bad an offense as you could write up if you were creating a movie. Wow--Not sure I've ever seen anything like this level of inefficiency. Outstanding video. Really well done, as always
Goal line offense maybe but they had the 6th rated offense in the entire league that year.
Love these videos. This guy knows every fact about every player of every game ever played and has the video evidence to back it up. This guy has more game video than NFL films!

Man it's cool hearing you talk about seifert optimism. My dad was stoked, I remember him telling me how Seifert had won super bowls and would be a good coach. Didn't work out so well though haha.
My dad definitely would have been at that lions game but i can't remember it well myself as I would have been 9.
George Seifert, was, the coaching equivalent of, A, Trust Fund Baby, the, two, SBs, he, "won," were, with, a, ready-made, team, and, beating, an, obscenely unlucky, Cowboys, team, that's it.
@@matthewdaley746 yep. he was handed a golden goose of coaching jobs.
@@stevenbauer4799 The weirdest part, is, if Roger Craig doesn't fumble, they're, both, in, the, HOF, he deserves to be, anyway, of course, if they, ever, open up a wing, for, underachievment, they should name it, after, him.
@@matthewdaley746 Yep. That and montana having his elbow rearranged by leonard marshall effectively ended niner three peat bid. I believe craig was the first back to get over 2000 combined rushing/receiving yds. in a season. Would have been hard to keep siefert out of the hall based on two in a row even tho they were still basically walsh's team.
@@stevenbauer4799 Tom Coughlin's Giants, beat, Tom Brady, twice, and, absolutely nobody's clamoring, for, him to get, in, penalizing George Seifert makes, absolutely, perfect sense, penalizing Roger Craig does, not, at all.
Fred Lane from Lane College. That was the "Ken Anderson and Cris Collingsworth study law in the offseason" and "Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates played basketball in college" of the 90s.
8-8 lions made the playoffs over 8-8 car. based on that 'goal line' stand then got beat by the dc wft skins in the playoffs. That would be their last playoff appearance until 2011 as the forgettable millen era of ineptitude and wasted draft picks took over. And car. was just one more season away from george 'i'm not a good coach yet i played one in sf' seifert and 15 straight in season losses. The first team to do that. And lions were 6-2, tops in the nfc, after a win over eventual s b champ greatest show rams two weeks later then stumbled to a 2-6 finish. Then in typical lion fashion bobby ross walks out on lions after nine games the following season.
That Lions team overachieved for half the season, having lost Barry on the eve of training camp. The defense did reasonably well, with former Washington DC Larry Peccatiello running their D and Michigan coach Gary Moeller as LBs and asst. head coach.
moeller did all that in between drinks as well.
The most shocking takeaway I got from this video was that Eric Metcalf was a Panther.
Or that they apparently had a receiver named Machine Muhammad
@@mgb4692 Sounds like a pro wrestler’s name.
@@mgb4692 I believe that was Muhsin or Mushin Muhammad.
They should have just spiked the ball on every down.
LOL 👍
This comment deserves 100 likes minimum.
Beat me to it!
The entire coaching staff should have been fired on the spot and all 53 players cut
Ah yes, the beginning of the Seifert era in Carolina. So much optimism at the start, but that flame went out rather quickly as things just got worse and worse over time, unfortunately.
Fox plugging fishing was an interesting side note to this video
The fish looked like the piranha in Megapiranha with Tiffany and Greg Brady
Man your channel is AMAZING!
How the blue hell do the Panthers not use Muhsin Muhammad in those situations?! No wonder George Seifert didn't succeed in Charlotte.
That and Seifert's been part of two JG9 vids, the "run-out" and the 1998 NFL Today horrorrama (a third here, and I'm sure 2001's lurking somewhere) tells you how this is gonna go
The only problem with that is that Beuerlein couldn't even get a pass off down there in this game. Even if Muhammad had been on the field, it wouldn't help if the O-line doesn't block anyone.
I absolutely love this channel.
Judging by the thumbnail I just assumed it was Lions O vs Panther D. So glad to be wrong because the Lions deserve something to go right every once in a while.
What surprises me here is that it wasn't the Lions with the total offensive failure inside the five. The Lions do have that kind of history.
Same I fully anticipated yet another monumental failure from them
Especially since this was the year after Barry Sanders retired.
Also, they still had Rae Carruth (inactive here, and Fred Lane was killed the next summer after he was traded to the Colts) at this point, as if they weren't suffering enough
George Seifert would be in the hall of fame if he didn't have that disastrous tenure in Carolina especially with the 1-15 season.
This is some legendary ineptness. You might think they were facing the 02 Bucs defense
That defense, was, great, but, if the Patriots hadn't missed the, Playoffs, on a tiebreaker, it wouldn't have mattered, simple as that.
The surprising part was that this WASN'T the Lions with the worst goal line offense--I thought it was, as it would make sense...
So the Panthers' goal line offense would have been better if they had spiked the ball into the ground on every single play.
To learn more about the history of spiking the ball into the ground on every single play, click the card in the upper right corner.
@@mdf3530 I’m the historian! Unofficially speaking, that is.
This thread officially wins the internet for the week. 👏👏👏
At least for one game the Lions reversed the curse this is the kind of stuff that always seemed to happen to them if you are from Detroit you know what I'm talking about.
I’m a 49ers fan and I always thought that Seifert won those Super Bowls with Bill Walsh’s team and his plays.
Additionally, water is wet.
I watched a Bengals game around this same period. Bruce Coslet was the coach and Jeff Blake, Corey Dillon, and Carl Pickens were the offensive stars. They ran about 7 straight plays inside the 5, including 4 straight runs by Dillon, and never could score a TD. They had picked up a penalty to get that many chances and were inside the 2 for the second half of the series.
Mike Brown's done lots of stupid things, but, the, stupidest, was, handing, a, SB, to the Patriots, by giving them Corey Dillon, for, essentially, nothing, they, "might," have, won, it, anyway, but, that made it far, easier, though, that iteration of the Patriots', Dynasty, would fall apart, the year, after.
Tim biakabatuuka played at Michigan and was a pretty good standout running back.
3:35 CIN Carter dislocates kneecap in 1st Quarter 😒
This sounds exactly like something the panthers would do.
The sad part is as being forced to be a lions fan living in michigan this is our super bowl until the Ford family sells the team these moments is all lions fans have since they are never going to the super bowl
As a Dallas fan the past few years has been terrible for our Goal Line/Red Zone Offense. It’s annoying averaging the most yards every season but averaging around 20th or so in Touchdowns!
Speaking of which, the officials handed them, eight, seconds on the, final, drive, and, yet, they still, lost, they, weren't, robbed, period.
dak should learn the rules about how to kill the clock.
@@stevenbauer4799 That Game, was, lost, in the, first, half, just, like, Tom Brady, against, the Rams, he has, two, more, years, but, has, reached, his, last, SB, it's just that simple.
Well Jaguargator9 you are PROVING MY POINT that the Carolina Panthers are WAY BELOW a 39.6 and should just SPIKE the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!!!
Me being a fan of carolina I’m somehow surprised it wasn’t last seasons team making this list. Offensive line as effective as police tape. No quarterback effectiveness…. Or 2010 with no quarterback what so ever. But yea 1999….. Jesus the pain
Yet, only, three, years, earlier, they, not, only, were, one, Game, from, the, SB, but, also, Hammered, The, Final, Nail, In, The, Cowboys', Coffin, truly, not, sure, who, that, says, more, about.
Self-destructed? No, they destroyed you up front.
How did I not remember this game? I'm from Detroit.
Muhsin Muhammad's first name is pronounced MOOSE-IN
How do you know?
"Muhsin Muhammad II (/muːˈsɪn/; born Melvin Darnell Campbell Jr. May 5, 1973) is a former American football wide receiver who played for the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL)"

@@spartan1121 lol I remember I was just joking 😅
even a Sam Darnold led Panther's offense would've done a better job
Eye Mull of Muhsin
To be fair, they didn't score a TD from outside the 5 either.
They were stopped by the Lions? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaw no way.
I remember this year 🤦
The Chiefs made a run at this in AFC title game (at 1 and zero points at end of half; inside 5--> kicked 44 yard FG at end of 4th)
That, was, pure ego, they lucked, out, against, the Bills, and, figured they, were, untouchable, now, that they've, lost, Tyreek Hill, I think their window, "might," have, already, slammed shut, (it hasn't).
Makes total sense to bench your best WR when you reach the red zone
You have to do it.
I remember a Cards-Eagles game where Arizona (I think they were in Arizona by then, but they may have been the "Phoenix Cardinals") had 7 cracks at the goalline, with 6 of those at the 1-yard line (due to a number of 'offsides' calls against Philly) ... and the Eagles never budged, stuffing the Cards on all attempts (including 4th down).
That may have the greatest single-drive goalline stand, but I'll admit that it doesn't compare to the 5-time 0-fer Carolina pulled here.
Steve buerelien was their weakest link.
it was just one game, so u should phrase it as worst goal line offensive performance or something.
You know how they talk about Madden like numbers.... this is reverse Madden numbers.
I remember being shocked when the Panthers were in the nfc championship their 2nd year
I, was, too, but, watching that Cowboys team all season, I, never, bought into them, I knew they'd, win, their Division, by default, and, once, they arrived, they, were, a quality opponent away from being, done, that they, only, needed, one, more, season to accomplish total implosion, was, more, shocking.
5:40 Hold up, I gotta correct you. You do not call one of the best Panthers ever "Machine." It's pronounced "Moo-sin."
He showed the Fox fishing show promo twice. Is that implying that Panther fans would have rather been watching fishing or actually fishing that day than watch this train wreck performance?
