- Matt Eberflus is an idiot, and if any play sums up his disastrous tenure as head coach of the Chicago Bears, it's this one right here
In week 4 of the 2023 NFL season, with the Bears facing 4th and 1 in a tie game against the Denver Broncos with under 3 minutes left, for some reason, Eberflus decides not to take the guaranteed lead, and instead, proceeds to do everything wrong

I'm surprised it took this long for Matt Eberflus to get a Dumb Decisions episode
He needs a dumb decisions career edition
Well, Josh McDaniels and Brandon Staley have kinda been dominant in this category. 😂
As @shawnjohnson9763 said, he’s had some surprisingly stiff competition the first few weeks
@@shawnjohnson9763 hahaha true story
To be fair, it's because he's never had to truly make any coaching decisions that mean anything because the Bears are already down 3 scores by the 4th
I saw Eberflus' post-game comments briefly on the NFL on Fox Post-game show after the Cowboys/Patriots game, and I saw the headline they showed about them going for it on 4th and 1 and I thought to myself: "Something dumb must have happened. JaguarGator9 will be uploading tomorrow morning about this I'd bet." I'm glad my instinct was better than that of an NFL Head Coach!
got into work today and told everyone to go to his page because i knew he was going to talk about the bears
@@alejbr4 That's kind of awesome ngl.
I actually am okay with the decision to go for it here. Had they picked up the first down, they could have just ran the clock out, kicked the field goal, and won the game. He knew his defense was going to at least allow Denver to get into field goal range, so he tried to win it there. Now the playcall itself was awful. Handoff out of the shotgun when only need one yard is indefensible.
Agreed, going for it was Okay but calling the timeout and running the play they did was a couple of dumb decisions.
I agree, I think there were several other decisions made across the league that were worse than this one.
Im a bears fan and this was crushing. Fields was literally crying at the end of the game.
Just losing is bad enough. But they introduced hope, the possibility (Maybe likelihood) of a win.
Then crushed it like an armadillo on the interstate.
he sat in the lockerroom alone , eberflus just broke this team for no reason, other than being cute with the plays.
I'm not a bears fan but I feel bad for fields.
Absolutely agree. This is the first I've seen someone speak on this but I thought this was the absolute crushing blow terrible terrible call it absolutely hated this
Wow we made it on Dumb Desicions. We really hit rock bottom.
Was hoping for a dumb decision on the horrible Steelers 4th down call. That ended up getting Picket hurt. But that might just be kicking while they're down
Not a good week for coaches named "Matt"
I think it coming
Yeah that was soul-crushing.
There's a whole week. At least until Friday when whatever we do ends up being on Dumb Decisions AGAIN.
Justin Fields proved he can play and was right to subtly call out coaching a couple weeks ago.
The team gave up 70 the week before dude, pump the brakes.
I am so glad that it isn't the Broncos on the Dumb Decisions side this time.
Not only was this a dumb decision overall, but the play call was atrocious as well. I mean why are you calling a running play out of the shotgun with one yard to go, forcing the RB to have to go a longer distance to get to the line? Just put everybody near the line to give the back a better chance. Plus you have probably the best running QB in the league who is more than capable of sneaking and getting a yard. I feel bad for the Bears fans who have to watch this s***show every week.
Ay least it wasn't a Josh McDaniels end around. Lol!
I think people need to see what the Steelers did yesterday, may be worse than this. 4th and 1 and they run a pass play out of shotgun, have the receivers run 10-15 yard routes and get their QB injured in the process.
@@FishermanJustinsI don't know about worse but it was horrific. Add in that Pickett injured on the play and it was a daily double of stupidity.
Matt Nagy did the same. They are related
At this point I feel like you're waiting for the season to be over to have an entire season worth of Brandon Staley
Matt Eberflus one of the worst head coaches ever.
This has been a bad weekend as a football fan, first my UCF Knights blew a 35-7 lead and my Bears blew a 28-7 lead. It’s the same thing as last year when Justin and the offense clicks but our defense lets us down.
I agree. My LSU Tigers forgot what defense is. Then my Saints forgot what offense is.
As a Bears fan, a Dumb Decisions video on Eberflus has been a long time coming!
I'm SURPRISED it Took 4 quarters FOR A DUMB DECISIONS episode on this game
With how the season is going at least with these loses hopefully means a less incompetent head coach. It’s been so bad maybe we can get a couple fans to be a temp Head Coach and defense coordinator. We would probably win at least 2 games this year.
Actually, I don't mind the decision to go for it on 4th down. The problem I had was the play that was called/run. Fields could've easily run it himself with a bootleg/option that could've resulted in an easy conversion or even a touchdown.
Worst case scenario, the Bears attempt the field goal, BUT the Broncos block the kick and return it all the way for a touchdown.
Furthermore, the game shouldn't have even come down to this moment, anyway. The Bears' defense lost this game. Blew a 21-point lead and couldn't make the big stop when they HAD to. And that's why they tried to go for it because by that point, Eberflus had no faith in his defense.
yeah, they called one of the worst 4th and 1 plays I could think of.
the narrator is forgetting that being up 7 is a lot better than being up 3. There would also be less time on the clock.
JG9: I think I will not do a Dumb Decisions video this week
NFL 2023 season: ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?
Yep I knew this would be the dumb decision episode 😂
This wouldn't be that bad if they run a play under center, where it is relatively likely to get just a yard
Last year Colin Cowturd proclaimed that the Bears had found their man. Haven't won since.
A good head coach uses that personnel grouping then lines up in an empty formation, and abuses the mismatch against LBs who likely can't cover.
A bad HC tries to run up the gut.
Eberflus really embracing that tank for Caleb Williams
Thats why NFL need a draft lottery
The Bears have never fired a coach mid-season. Even Trestman got to play out his second season after giving up over 50 points two weeks in a row.
Thank you for saying out loud what all Bears were thinking. Eberflus and the brilliant OC should be fired. Move GM Poles to the hot seat. The only problem is the ancient McCaskeys - Bears owners - will not do it mid-season. I think they like watching Bears fans suffer.
Matt Eberflus is also historically bad. He’s also lost 14 straight games going back to last year surrendering 25+ points in each game.
Unless you make George McCaskey listen to Gatorjag 9 on an endless loop, he will not fire Eberflus before the end of the season.
Me Personally, As a Bears fan, Matt Eberlose might be the worst head coach in Bears History. Worser than Fox or Trestman. At this point, The Bears might as well Tank.
Yeah. When Eberflus got hired I wasn't happy about it, but decided to hold my judgement until he showed us what he had.
He does not have much.
Worser?
@@peepeepoopoo4025 nobody likes a grammar nazi.
@@2rare2die26 look I get it and I try not to, but holy shit. He went out of his way to be that wrong.
@peepeepoopoo4025 or he accidentally hit the R an extra time while typing. Or even worser, maybe autocorrect got him.
Just don't be a prick. It's easy
I actually don't have much of an issue with their going for it here. The Broncos' defense is lousy. Going for it on fourth-and-1 against them is reasonable.
But I don't care how bad they are when you telegraph your intent to them AND line up in a formation that is not likely to succeed anyway. No NFL defense is THAT bad.
Thanks for saying what all Bears fans are thinking
“You play to win the game!” Shoutout to Herm Edwards.
Bears saw how bad Denver looked last weekend and panicked that someone might out-tank them for Caleb
This was a week filled with dumb decisions. Commanders not going for 2 could make an episode. Especially with Ron Riveras answer to why he didn't do it
Yeah, his saying they were gassed was exactly why I would go for 2 in that situation!
or frank reich letting the clock run down… or calling a play for thielen WHILE THIELEN WAS ON THE FUCKING SIDELINES and having to burn a timeout.
I’m a diehard WAS fan and not a big fan of Rivera’s in game management but that doesn’t rise to a Dumb Decision. It’s not clearly wrong and we did get the ball in OT and got a bit jobbed by the refs. He’s made plenty worse decisions…
I said while watching this play, "looks like we have a new episode of Dumb Decisions coming."
As a Broncos fan, I'm happy they made that decision. I think you know why. Even though Justin Fields was cooking for the most part of the day, I'm just relieved that we didn't earn the title of the worst team in football, or that team that couldn't beat the Bears. We still suck, but I'm glad we're not winless.
I didnt expect the Bears to make the playoff but didn't think theyll be like the 1992 Patriots
Running a fourth and one out of shotgun should be an automatic trigger for a Dumb Decisions episode.
as soon as i saw this play happen i knew this video was coming out
I'm surprised it took this long for my Bears to be on the wrong side of Dumb Decisions.
Coaching like a man with marching orders to tank at all costs, no matter how obvious.
The worst part is that had Eberflus not even called a TO when Denvers already suspect defense was on its heals and just let Fields plow forward from under center with a QB sneak the Bears probably get that first down easily. How do these million dollar coaches always have ZERO guage for game momentum? The Bears could have hired Jim Harbaugh and should have hired Jim Harbaugh and still should hire Jim Harbaugh. Instead the McCaskeys handcuffed the fanbase to another 4 years of nickel and dime bargain bin coaching.
Josh McDaniels: doesn’t trust his offense, goes for a field goal down by 8.
Matt Eberfleus: doesn’t trust his kicker for a moderate shot, goes for a 1st down with little time left.
This is already a banner year for Dumb Decisions.
No doubt about that. Now the Raiders probably have the dumbest (seriously, McDummy earned his nickname). but he's far from the only active HC that just makes you scratch your head. There'll be a lot of material for Dumb Decisions episodes for sure.
This is "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" play calling.
Eberflus, the brand name for the Ikea toilet. 😅
I would've placed a bet that you'd make a video about this play
The only scenarios I can think of are
1) your kicker is hurt
2) the opponent is out of time outs
The Bears are the definition of Murphy’s Law
It’s sad that the NFL is giving you fresh material every week. Really shows how bad NFL head coaches are these days.
I'm half tempted to declare that Barry Switzer's decision to go for it on 4th down twice in a row against the Eagles in 1995 was more defensible than this
As someone who actually watched this, this was not a bad decision. Our defense was not going to make a stop. It was better if we try to get the 1 yard, kill the clock, then kick a field goal. Our bigger problem is that our defensive coach can’t get one defensive stop.
Our defense can’t get a stop so why not take the points? At least have a shot for OT.
Also bad decision to call a shotgun run play on a 4th and 1 after burning a wasted timeout. All around bad
They got the ball after the field goal too
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a Dumb Decisions (TM) video about Barry Switzer making a similar decision in 1995.
Absolute buffoonery. Eberflus has got to go.
I could see a Tush Push attempting to convert, but even the distance was a long one yard.
Going for it on 4th & 1 in field goal range in a TIED GAME with less than 3 minutes left was already dumb. And then just when I thought it was peak stupidity, they lined up in shotgun formation instead of directly under center. "That's it. That's as dumb as it gets, right?" That's what I thought, then they called what could have been a read option play that had a legit chance of picking up the first down on the right side if Justin Fields kept it (because the Broncos kinda suck at everything) and instead tried to run it up the gut. That's when I said out loud. "Ah, so that's why they're 0-3..."
"Going for it on 4th & 1 in field goal range in a TIED GAME with less than 3 minutes left was already dumb"
Not always. The field goal isn't always relevant. We saw that in tge Eagles Cardinals game
"Going for it on 4th & 1 in field goal range in a TIED GAME with less than 3 minutes left was already dumb."
Absolutely disagree with you and JG9 there. Taking the points sets up an unstoppable Broncos offense for a touchdown, where they will give you no time to respond.
The only thing I see saving Eberflus is that the Bears hate firing coaches midseason.
Can't wait till my vikings get to play this bears team 😂
Sorry to say, the Vikes will probably find a way to lose
@@garrethboland your probably right with how this seasons gone so far.. gotta keep on hopin tho
@@garrethbolandnah, the Bears won't let that happen.
@@shawnjohnson9763 hahaha yeah.... sadly. Maybe they'll win one of the matchups
The Bears snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
They must have lost on purpose, no way he could be that stupid.
Classic example of checkmating yourself.
The good old: He doesn't know that I know that he knows that I know he doesn't know syndrome.
Thanks for posting this! Was waiting! LOL! Already Subscribed and Thumbs Up! -- Todd C (Creek Sider1)
Matt Canada has got to be up there with dumb plays.
I'm surprised you didn't do another episode on Sirianni scoring too quickly in the final two minutes of the Commanders@Eagles game. Not the dumbest decision I suppose, but I thought that one deserved consideration. Would like to know your thoughts on that sequence.
Didn't have a problem with it. Pass was to the end zone and it's not as though the Eagles had a chance to run out the clock
Not before Josh McDaniels
JG9, is this really a "Dumb Decision" or a Crazy Like A Fox decision. This isn't a must win game, it's a must lose game, and Brandon Perna said as much. He said it was a win, but it cost a chance at drafting Caleb Williams.
At least it wasn't 28-3, JaguarGator9...
what is that music? it's so calming, and goes so good with baffled incredulous righteous anger
Will the steelers be a dumb decision? 4th and 1 and you chose shotgun and pass
Any other year, probably, but this year? I’m not sure it’s dumb enough to qualify this year, because this season is shaping up to be an all star season for DD
@williambryant6175 I hated that decision. Shotgun and you need 1 yd? It's now 6 yards you need
@@andrewgrove1691 oh I’m not denying it’s incredibly stupid, I’m just saying this season’s significantly raised the bar for ‘Dumb Decisions’ levels of incredibly stupid
This had to be an active tank job by the team. There’s very little feasible way an NFL head coach could be that incompetent without intentionally trying to be.
Because if you make 1 yard you guarantee win the game. It's not hard to imagine why
Oh, it's been looking like Clown College around 16th Street & Lake Shore Drive for a while.
A large blown lead was inevitable in this tank bowl since Matty Ice was on the call for this one.
That was his specialty.🤣
As a Bears fan all my life: seeing us finally have a chance to break our losing streak, to see how our team could play if they were coached well, being up by 3 scores heading into halftime, only for the coaches to throw it all away, was the most humiliating thing I think I've ever experienced. Justin Fields can work well in Chicago, Darnell Mooney can work well in Chicago, all of them can. It just feels like the coaches refuse to let that happen, and I'm so sick of it
Man, you've got some serious problems as a team if you can't beat a defense that allowed 70 pts.
Chicago is one of 2 teams that have yet to win a game this season. The other is Carolina. Will the Bryce Young trade go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history?
I was checking the news regularly after this game yesterday to see if Eberflus was going to get fired on the same day of this game.
The Broncos wouldn’t have to drive “the length of the field” to kick a field goal. That doesn’t make sense.
Eberflus deserves to be fired but he may have some insurance since he is calling the defensive plays. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned earlier in the season. If the Bears fire Eberflus they need to fill 2 positions. No one on the staff can do either of these and I don't think the Bears will hire an outsider. He's here until black monday.
Thank you
a dumb decision in a 0-3 vs 0-3 game becomes a smart decision. Oh, a must WIN? never mind
I saw this happen live and was like, "JG9 has his Dumb Decisions episode for tomorrow." Sure enough...
12:48 Death Star
Excellent video. All these coaches now think it’s cool to go on 4th down all the time. What a bad call
Don't even get me started on Brandon Staley in that regard. He nearly cost the Chargers their home game vs. the Raiders.
I wouldn't use the word "guaranteed" because nothing's guaranteed in the NFL. However, a field goal was the higher percentage play there and I'm not sure why Eberflus got greedy there.
Lining up in shotgun on 4th and 1 is the dumbest thing.
If the Bears weren't a dumpster fire right about now, I would be wondering why they were keeping this guy around as their head coach.
Another way to look at it is... the Broncos gave up 28.
What is that? Like 130 points over the past 10 quarters?
The decision was more defensible than the playcall. What's the point of having Justin Fields if you don't take advantage of his playmaking ability?
Brian Urlacher will be coaching the Bears after Thursday game
As a broncos fan it feels good to not be the punchline for once
I knew this video was coming
Mark my words.... this team will go 0-17
1. If the Bears lose on Thursday night, I guarantee that thwy will be having a press conference Friday afternoon announcing they’ve fired Eberflus.
2. Deep dish is seen by locals as a pizza for tourists. Most locals eat thin crust pizza that’s been cut tavern style (look it up).
Shout out to the ‘92 Chargers
Still remember and I was living in San Diego in 1992
The Bear is tanking on purpose, that is about the only justification for the decision.
Honestly, with the skills that Fields is supposed to have I would not have been surprised if the Bears had the same look but ran a fake handoff and rolled Fields out and had him run for the first. But this is Eberflus here. He's gonna find a way to suck.
There's a ton of talk about tanking for Caleb. You do realize he has the option to stay at USC.
The decision to go for it isn't the dumb decision. The play call is. Why run up the gut out of shotgun when everyone knows you only need one yard to get the first down?
IMO, what makes this stupid is if you're going to call a play, why not go under center and QB sneak it on 4th and 1?
Atlanta did almost the same thing against the packers but made the first. Worse they were down by two
I don't personally think this one was a dumb decision. Sure, it obviously looks bad because they didn't convert on 4th down, and the actual play call was a dumb decision, but I'm fine with the concept of going for it there. Here's my thought process.
Sure, the Broncos punted on 4 of their last 6 drives. But that's kind of a misleading statistic. On their last two drives against the Bears, the Broncos scored a touchdown. With that in mind, it's probable that the Broncos, given the ball back, would score points.
When you said there was only two possibilities of going for it on 4th down and they both give the Broncos the ball back with about 1:15 left, that doesn't consider the possibility of the Bears getting another first down and eating up more clock. In a hypothetical situation where the play worked, if I was the head coach, I wouldn't try to get a touchdown. I'd just try to get the first down by running the ball to make it so the Broncos don't have time. Over the course of the game, they were running the ball really well. There's a very real chance of winning the game without giving the ball back if that 4th down conversion worked.
Kicking the field goal is definitely the safer play there but I didn't trust the Bears defense to make a stop and I think going for it was fine. Eberflus is still an idiot with how it was managed and the play call, though.
you never broke down the missed blocks, the Rookie RT Tackel missed the blitzing LB that was of course will blitz. First round draft pick. He will learn from this, hopefully he will never forget that play the rest of his life.
Not his first dumb decision of the season. He also thought PJ Walker wasnt good enough to be his backup QB. PJ may have as many wins as a starter as Justin Fields dating back to last season LOL
I think this makes more sense if both teams are 3-0 and fighting for a division lead. Any time you can have a chance to win the game and leave your opponent no time left on the clock, it sounds like a bold move, and you look like a genius if it works.
But, this is the Bears. They were 0-3. They NEEDED a win. And kicking the field goal was their best chance, not going for it. This was ridiculously stupid.
If they get the first, best case scenario is actually that they win the game without giving the ball back, because they only needed the 17 for the first. They could have moved the ball again, made the Broncos use their last time out, gotten to the other side of the 2-minute warning, and kept running out the clock before a last second near-goal-line field goal try. That is probably what they were ultimately hoping for. But, again... not at all what happened.
Sad. And just plain dumb.
