The 2022 Detroit Lions Are HISTORICALLY BAD
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2022
- The 2022 Detroit Lions have the best offense in the NFL through four games, yet somehow, despite averaging 35 points per game, sit at 1-3, and have a losing record. Can the Lions turn things around? Well, if NFL history is anything to go off of, based on teams to have similar starts... don't count on it.

Lions are such a fun and emotional team to watch. falling just short unbelieveably often and handing out big L's. their defense needs a lot of work, but if they ever made it to the playoffs people will be cheering them on from everywhere.
Not really they are beyond irrelevant. No one cares about lions
I as a Seahawks fan will absolutely be cheering them on
@@chasegilmond5637 because youre a seahawks fan
The lions found a way to score 45 points with their 3 best offensive players out and they still lost
The 2015 Chiefs scored exactly 100 points, started 1-3, and made it as a wild card
That was the season where Andy Reid decided to methodically drive the Chiefs down the field late in the fourth quarter down 14 against New England in the divisional round. The Chiefs scored a TD with less than 2 minutes left, had no choice but to go for an onside kick and didn't recover.
@@nsp31a Reid and being careless with the clock? Never!
@@jasonfire3434 Haha, right? I was watching the game saying "Call a timeout!" outloud multiple times. Would love to see JG9 analyze that dumb decision.
But on this list you had to have scored MORE THAN 100 points.
If they would've scored 1 more point, they wouldn't have made the playoffs. 🤔
I guess this game is why he went with OVER 100 points. He would have gotten away with it too...
I’m happy for Jared Goff, but sadly he’s getting the Matthew Stafford experience of carrying an awful roster instead of contending for a playoff spot.
That entire offense is hella good
Our roster ain’t bad just a lot of injurys
@@E-Rad dude, we seriously need an entire new 11 man defense or a new Defensive coordinator team. We traded out a bunch of good defensive players 2 seasons ago that would have helped. I'm looking at you D. Slay and I. Suh....
@@xen1313 do you even understand football? Suh had a ton of issues, and quality corners are not unicorns, if you are a rebuilding team why are you going to pay players that will be on career declines by the time you are rebuilt? if you are going to suck, then be the best at sucking, dont pay 50 million to win 2 more games and lose draft position only to pay 50 more million on declining players once you have a shot to win.
Tank for Anderson, draft Noah Sewell with Rams pick, trade for a corner, sign a safety.
Could you imagine if they had more on defense besides Jeff Okudah and Aidan Hutchinson? This team would be unbeatable
Lions defensive coaches must be getting red hot every week.
These 2022 Lions look like the pre-'90s dynasty Cowboys the season before their now-legengary Hershel Walker trade. If they can hold onto this potent offense after this season and bring in a much better defensive squad through trade, free-agency, and the draft, then they could have a serious chance of being playoff contenders.
It reminds me of the 1981 Redskins. They scored all those points and yet started out 0-5. It really wasn't until they went back to the running game they ended with an 8-8 record and the next year they won the Super Bowl.
Defense still wins championships, no matter how many passes NFL quarterbacks are throwing all over the yard these days.
I wonder if the Lions will beat the two NFL records set last year by the Vikings, the most one-score games and the most points given up in the final two minutes. Considering that the 2021 Vikings beat the previous record holder the 2020 Vikings, I think this is likely to happen.
Could you do a video of Marty Mornhinweg deciding to kickoff in overtime against the Bears in 2003 only to lose when they Bears kicked a FG on their first drive?
The Bears scored late on the Lions and this Bozo won the coin toss and puts his defense immediately on the field.
Marty Mornhinweg was 5-27 in 2 seasons with all 5 wins being at home. He never did win a road game.
Mornhinweg’s treatment of Charlie Batch to start his first season was just absolutely awful. I remember in week 2 Ty Detmer threw 7 picks and still started the next game!! And I also remember Herman Moore suffering a hip pointer but not being put back on the field when he had recovered! Absolutely terrible terrible memories. I stopped watching the Lions during the 2002 season and didnt tune back in on sunday ticket until 2016.
@@Ragtime4 i don’t even blame you for not watching them for that amount of time. They were pitiful for the good amount of the 2000s
@@explosivereactionstv7414 Clearly you are a kind-hearted and merciful person. 🥰🥰
Before I continue, this reminds me of my 2015 Giants. The pain that team put me through that year. We shoulda won AT LEAST 11 games that year, but with all the blown leads and failed comebacks (including the Panthers and Saints games) we went 6-10
I figured you were going to do something about this Lions team. Dan Orlovsky said that if the Lions defense was bad, they would be 3-1. This is a fun team to watch...unless you are a Lions' fan, I suppose.....your research on this topic was amazing--What an analysis you did here on the history here. Awesome job on the 2 criteria and explanations
I think the record right now was expected but I expected them to be a strong rushing team with solid defense. They are now a strong rushing team with an explosive offense.
I have a better chance of being with a super model, than the Detroit lions making the playoffs.
Now im curious how the inverse works. Dominant defenses with the worst scoring offenses
Look no further than the '77 Falcons. I think he did a whole video on them.
Idk how the 2000 Ravens ranked in scoring but besides Jamal Lewis they had zero offense. Good enough for a Super Bowl though.
2015 Broncos, Peyton didn't win THAT superbowl, Von Miller did
@@robertlewis3319 I can't remember if JG9 did, but I know KTO did. The Grits Blitz did appear as the opponents in a Dumb Decisions episode a few months back though.
@@Phateagle262 Yep, that is the one I remember, thx.
Three things to note-
1: The Lions have scored more points than most of the teams listed (102, 106, etc. is pretty different than 140 lol)
2: Lions have done this despite having 8/11 of our starters out with short term injuries.
3: Anyone who expected the Lions to make the playoffs was hoping for too much too soon. The expectations for this team were 5.5 or so wins. Some had 6-6.5, but a lot of the teams listed went 7-9, which would be outperforming anyone’s expectations for year 2.
8 mile climb. I see what you did there.
Just look at their schedule the next 4 games are going to be impossible for them to win if that defense keeps playing like that
Loved this video. It's always great seeing someone go back in history for things like this. Keep it up my guy!
They've gotta fire their defensive coordinator
This obscure and highly relevant information is why I love this channel. This channel brings up stories and topics that even hardcore fans may not even know. BRAVO
Since they drafted Hutchinson, I thought it would be more likely that their defense would be decent and their offense bad.
I think he’s undersized.
Sure sounds like the morale of this is that you need both a good offense *and* a good defense to be successful in this league.
The lions are missing a good corner and 4 defensive linemen. Then 2 offensive linemen starters and receiver Jameson Williams. After this week they have a bye and hopefully get a lot of talent back. So offense will improve but that's not the issue. Hopefully all the pass rushers make a difference
Don't forget their best Safety is also out, but not likely returning this year.
The Falcons were the worst 2nd half team in 2020, blowing leads five times, including nearly upsetting the Chiefs. The only game where they actually played in the second half was when they blew out the Raiders. The other three they won, they managed to hold off late game charges. As a long-suffering Falcons fan, I found that rather frustrating.
Yea man 2020 was so bad with all the different ways they lost.
These lions may be awful defensively, but they have, arguably, an offense as fun to watch and keep up with as the 07 pats or 2019 chiefs. Except they're a team a raider fan like myself can actually enjoy killing it on that, or any, side of the ball
The Lions offense is definitely good. Their defense is fuuuuucking garbage though.
Very garbage they ranked 32
Damn, this team was literally 10 points from starting 4-0 with that portion of their schedule. I tallied up the deficits from each of their three losses so far:
4 points in a loss at home to the Eagles
3 points in a loss at the Vikings
3 points in a loss at home to the Seahawks
Now, as far as history goes, this means...absolutely nothing. Specifically, "historically bad" should be explained more here than just through emphasizing a historical pattern of other NFL teams. In terms of franchise history, only the winless team of 2008 had a worse start giving up points like this on defense, but that team could have only wished for maybe 20% of the current offense's output to stay afloat and actually look competitive while losing. I know this is the Lions we're discussing (who have made losing infamously famous during the Ford era of the franchise), but the real problem (as rightly pointed out) is the not-so-playoff-caliber defense. It will of course take at least another offseason (and possibly some coaching changes) to fix this disaster.
Another thing I should add here is that the current Lions squad is the first team in the post-merger NFL era to lead the league in scoring while also being dead-last in points allowed.
Thanks for the encouragement JG9!
That 2018 Steelers team absolutely should have made the playoffs. UrinatingTree’s Days of Our Steelers video of that season tells the entire story. It was mind boggling how much that team underachieved.
My Colts benefited from that down fall in 2018. We returned the favor last season when the Colts collapsed and Steelers got in.
They would have if they didn’t piss away winnable games like they did against the Raiders, who won four games that year.
Happened in the AFL: 1961 Oilers. After 4 games, 1-3 despite 117 points scored (won their opener 55-0). 1-3-1 after 5. Then won 9 straight and the AFL title.
He said AFL not included
He moved the goalposts to make this video work for sure! Lol! Another commenter mentioned the Chiefs in 2015 but they only scored exactly 100 points.
@@Fencellisk True enough. If you have to go back to 1961 to find a counter-example.. in any laegue....I concede that his main point is valid.
@@stevedalbor1001 yeah. Spot on.
It’s astonishing how this video has aged well and poorly at the same time. Continuously bad year after year and getting shut out the very next game.
although he’s been playing well so far this year i’m still not sold on jared goff being the guy long-term. if they decide to stick with jared goff for another season they desperately need to draft defense with their first few picks. an edge rusher or DT to compliment hutchinson would be major for them. but if there was any year to need a QB and have a high draft pick it’s this year.
Wasn't it Marty that challenged the opening kickoff... lost, then challenged the next play, lost that one and then the Lions had no more challenges left with 14:57 left to go in the first quarter?
...... WHAT?!?! ......
After 3 seconds Lions fans found something better to do...
What a difference a couple of months make, now sitting at .500, looking at the first winning season since Caldwell, and a possibility of getting a Wild Card slot.
The lions need to work on their on side kick game. If they get one stop a game they can win
As a huge Lions fan, I'm loving all the coverage!!! Thanks man!
Good thing there are no injuries and all 24 starters & draft picks are completely healthy. . . 😡
The 2022 Lions look like the 2000 Rams. Historically amazing offense, historically terrible defense. Though the Rams started 6-0 before falling apart in the second half and losing in the Wild Card round.
Somehow there offensive is putting up some much points but there defense is letting up some much points definitely something they need to work on in the offseason.
Excited for the college video no school Wednesday great day tomorrow
Well, for the Lions 6-10 (or 6-11) is a winning season, and a winning season is equal to making the playoffs, and making the playoffs is the same as winning the Super Bowl. So we definitely got a chance.
The next season, the Denver Broncos would score exactly 100 points in their first four games while starting 1-3... AFC West sure does love their 1-3 with exactly 100 points scored starts.
There were a remarkably high number of those teams that finished with single-digit loss totals. I thought the record we were going to find out that they were mostly 5-11 or worse.
Thank you for another reminder that the Lions are never winning a Superbowl. Keep up the encouraging videos for us Lions fans…
Apparently, according to Atlanta Falcons owner, Author Blank, his team didn't know the onsides kick rules. That's how the Falcons blew the game vs. the Cowboys, and Dak Prescott missed the majority of that season.
Now you're going to have everyone cheering for the Lions! LMAO! Great video and I like the proof that Dan Marino carried the Dolphins, I guess the year mentioned he wasn't even enough....
Not a Lions fan, but comparing them to other teams based off these stats is just not valid. Every team is different, and you could pick out percentage based statistics to push any narrative.
I hope to see them contend for a playoff spot
“Defense? I barely know her”
-Detroit Lions
No seriously, the Lions are one of the most fun teams to watch. I can’t believe they’re ACTUALLY 1-3, but they are the literal epitome of “defense wins championships”
would have been nice if you gave us the stat for how many teams with a 1-3 record (or worse) after the first 4 games made the playoffs, regardless of offensive output.
The 2020 season was a special exception. There were a lotta high-scoring games, I’m guessing in part due to no preseason.
I'm a Bears fan but the way they're playing their record should be 0-4 instead of 2-2. The Lions are averaging over 30 points a game so far, instead of being 1-3, they oughta be 4-0. Justin Fields only threw for one touchdown and average under a hundred yards a game, but Goff threw eleven touchdowns and averaging over three to three hundred yards a game.
This is sort of the inverse of the 1977 Falcons, who had the stingiest D ever, but had an offense so horrible, that they only broke even at 7-7. If they had just a pedestrian offense that could manage 17PPG, they win the Super Bowl that year. Yes, even beating the Cowboys that year. Their D was that good.
Doing an inverse of this would be something to look into.
Not only did all 23 teams miss the playoffs, but all 23 did not end with a winning record either.
My dad has been a Lions fan since he was a little boy. His uncle played for the team back in the 30s and Dad was really close to Uncle Jack. So my whole life, I have been waiting for the Lions to do something - anything - positive, if only so my dad could see his team win something significant.
Nope. The Lions are the eternal disappointment. We joke about it and try to take it in stride. But this season is such a gut-punch. Things looked great to start - but Lions gonna Lion. 🤷🏼♀️
Living in Northern Michigan most of people in this area have just given up that Michigan will ever have a good pro football team. If you want to avoid having strokes or heart attacks watch a different team. The Lions will have a good lead in the first half, then here comes the second half and it's gone. As someone stated before if they got more defensive players with higher calibers, then we're talking a whole different football season.
Ah, the 1997 Raiders, with whom Jeff George became the last QB in NFL history to lead the league in passing yards without going over 4K.
I was soo excited to have him. I was young. Lol. Then we got Rich Gannon.
As a Lions fan, it's always the Lions setting the standard for losing and breaking records in a negative way. If there was a championship for losing, the Lions would win every year. Not even Cleveland would beat them.
As a 55 year old lifelong fan I’ve learned to never get overly excited about the Lions.
Don’t get me wrong, I still follow them closely and always will. I make it to see at least 2 games a year even though it’s a 4 hour drive.
They have lost games in almost every way possible but yet they still find new ways to lose every season
I knew the defense would struggle this year but didn’t expect them to drive the bus!
I’ve got $50 on them finishing over .500 so I’ll still be glued to the TV every Sunday.
The Lions are last in the NFL in both points and yards allowed per game through Week 4 and it's not even close in either category. Having an explosive offense is good, but that doesn't mean a damn thing if your defense can't stop anyone.
Bit disappointed that the analysis did not include the AFL. After all, “The Shield” took in all the records from the AFL. In other words, the NFL considers the AFL history part of its history.
1961 Houston Oilers. 1-3 with 112 points scored. Won the AFL championship. It was actually even worse. They tied their 5th game to go to 1-3-1 with 143 points scored. Then didn’t lose again.
You know I watched that game and I can't believe it at one point it seemed like we must have been up like 17 points or 20 points or something I mean somehow the Lions made it a 48 45 game. Like they've got the running attack that you trade your right arm for. They're just one of those classic teams where their record doesn't reflect their performance. Kind of reminds me of another era in Detroit Lions history like this kind of is a classic Detroit Lions season looking really good and getting you thinking that good things are going to happen only to blow it. The man is absolutely right the only reason the reason won that game is because the Lions must have a worse defense than in Seattle. You notice all their other games where they've been playing against good defenses they can't really score like against San Francisco who is looking like the best defense in the league like before the Monday night game I think they had only allowed 27 points
This team reminds me of the 2014-16 Saints
I’ll agree that Detroit _losing_ is fun to watch. The script is stale after 15 years, but I’m a lifelong GB fan - from around 90 miles approximately due WNW from Detroit LOL.
Atlanta Falcons are 2-2 and have played one score games in each game. They do play Tampa this week tho…
If they win Sunday, they will be the 1st!
None of those teams scored 140 points. How many NFL teams scored 140 points over their first 4 games and didn't make the playoffs?
That's a lot of statistics and information in one video. Reminds me of Milo Hamilton at best and Jon Sciambi at worst.
I mean it's their defense that has to get better. So like I think that they'll still win more games than they did last year. Like five games maybe even seven games. But if I had to put money on it I would say five
It's as if this Lions team is playing Madden on Playstation - watching them, it feels like there's no structure, organization, or seemingly any game plan to their games; it's just helter-skelter madness for 60 minutes. Fun to watch but definitely not a recipe for success.
Lions offense + Cowboys defense = contender
Saints
Please up your volume....
They might not make it this year, but if one side of your team is exceptionally strong and the other is hot garbage, you can get into contention by simply improving the garbage half of the team to mediocre, and that can be done by simply upgrading the weakest positions. The Lions should be good before much longer.
Give the Lions Demeco Ryans and the 49ers defense and they would be scary indeed.
Ended the season with a winning record at least.
Me suprised that the 2014 and 2015 Saints aren’t on this list
Kinda reminds me of the chiefs during the season they lost in the afc championship due to a bad defense, however it isn’t as bad as this defense
I’ve attended all three of the Lions home games. And yes, it’s exciting, but…sheesh!
Being a Falcons fan is so bad, we get dogged the most in a video about the lions sucking😂😅
Honestly their defense is easily the worst I have seen in my lifetime.
I will take 6-11 or 7-10. Thats a good season for a rebuilding team/culture
Here’s a question. Did these offenses come back to earth?
How are the worst with the leading QB and leading rusher?
The Lions are not that bad this season. They could easily be 4-0 or 3-1.
And so were the rest of the teams on the list
There defense is unbelievably atrocious
Yes they could be, but last year was the same. People started calling them the best winless team in nfl history.
They need to work on that defense
I look at it the from opposite side... The Lions are so bad on defense they should be 0-4
I love my lions so much I make an all lions O fantasy team every year named "all lions team matters.
They have one of the best offenses in the league, it sucks that they have the worst defense.
the Lions offense is good, but it's definitely not the best in the league. Stats alone can be misleading, as they don't account for the flow of the game that they are made in.
Saints 2014-17......1 number offense, 32 defense.......*sigh*.....
I thought the Lions might be alright after pushing the Eagles in week one. Apparently even a truly awful defense is still good enough to beat Carson and the Commies.
I want the Lions to have the #1 offense in football and the #32 ranked defense do it Detroit also break the NFL and have Jared Goff leat the league in TD passes.
If Brian Hoyer or Bailey Zappe light them up to...yea it's a done year.
I'm not saying the Lions will make the playoffs, but the past is meaningless. Vegas had the Lions at over under 6 wins, so it's not a huge surprise if they are below average. They play their hearts out for Dan Campbell and with Brad Holmes drafting guys there is no doubt he will get the right defensive guys in the next few years and they will be legitimate superbowl contenders soon.
.
There is no bright spot in the secondary. They can get torched by any team. Horrible
The Lions should be moved or dropped as a team all together.
Every year it's " rebuild year "
Jared Goff is a good quarterback he's not going to make it to the hall of fame but he's good not just serviceable he's actually good.
All this hate on Detroit lions on videos in October wow, another nfl YT channel made a video on how the lions have a dark future and will be finish even worse than the Texans this year but after this big turnaround…they TOOK it down 😂
Amazingly, Goff is better by any measure than Stafford so far this year. That offense is spectacular.
Don't understand why their D is so bad. They have some talent. At least more than they're showing.
Goff is highly dependent on line protection, more than anyone in the league besides maybe Mayfield. His clean pocket vs dirty pocket splits are really drastic. He's always been very good from a clean pocket and the Lions line is giving him that in spades this year
Love your channel, but this video aged like milk on a radiator in August.
0-16 for the Lions is “historically bad”
