- In week 10 of the 1979 NFL season between the Baltimore Colts and Cincinnati Bengals, Colts tight end Reese McCall was ruled out with a shoulder injury, and one hour before the game, was not even warming up, as he was in street clothes. Somehow, he wound up playing, scoring two touchdowns, winning the game, and having what was quite easily the best game of his NFL career. This is the story behind Reese McCall's stunning performance, which has to be the most surprising game ever by any tight end

I'm fairly certain Lawrence Taylor was not supposed to play in the 1982 Thanksgiving game vs the Lions due to injury. He sat the first half but came in the second half and singlehandedly won the game all by himself. The Giants scored 13 points: 1) 3 from a Taylor pressure causing an INT, the offense went 3 and out, and then kicked the FG 2) 3 from a Taylor forced fumble, the offense went 3 and out, and then kicked the FG 3) 7 from a Taylor INT which he returned 98 yards for a TD. Final score Lawrence Taylor 13, Detroit Lions 6.
"Click the card at the upper right corner."
if it was? if it were, subjunctive mood.
love your videos giving lowdown on classic nfl stories.
This is maybe the greatest "obscure" story you have ever told. Talk about the "very last minute" change of events and the greatest game a person ever played in his life. Wow...this was truly a fantastic story and context. This video is what makes your channel unique beyond words. Fantastic video
Man I appreciate it. Reese Mccall is my uncle and he's doin good. I'm showing my son about our fam and letting him know he's next up.
I'm glad he's doing well. He worked with us for a short time around 2007-2009, and I still see him from time to time in Lowe's in Bessemer.
Totally different NFL era. Most guy's had second jobs during the off-season and basically didn't play no pay.
@@matthewdaley746 I'm from DC and remember alot of veteran/stars working and meeting many Redskin players at Department of Commerce as kid where my father worked. Guys were more humble 2.
@@matthewdaley746 Jack Kent Cooke loved the Redskins for sure.
As a Baltimore Colts fan it’s hard to think about what they were before Robert Irsay bought the team and what they evolved into after he became the owner. He gutted a once proud franchise with his drunken buffoonery. As long as Joe Thomas was there as GM he was able to mitigate the damage. Once he was forced out the franchise began an inexorable decline that ended with their midnight move to Indianapolis.
I grew up in Baltimore, so I understand how sad it was to watch.
It was like a bad relationship; eventually Robert Irsay's ways broke the franchise down. This all happened before my time, but from the looks and footage of the 1975-1977 Colts, that team should've continued strong until at least 1983 (Then Elway to replace Jones, since Marchibroda is still there?). But yeah, if Robert Irsay just let things be instead of stirring up crazy! Sad indeed.
The 1980 game where he had 85 yards and two TDs - was against Cleveland, not Cincinnati. Baltimore lost that game 28-27.
I vaguely remember him.
Dropped more than he caught...when they drafted McCall the quote was, "We will teach him to catch the ball." Marchibroda had no business running a draft. They fired Joe Thomas in 1/77 & the drafts that followed were some of the worst in NFL History.
"Which came on this day against Cinncinnati". Kind of sounds like Belichick had a hand in this.😏
This vid gave me an idea: See if you can work the phrase "a whole lot of not much" into a script. I came up with it some years ago. 😁😁😁
Love it!
Was Don McCauley gone by then.....? As a kid I remember him coming up with many clutch 3rd down catches to make first-down conversions, and thought he was a tight end.
He was a running back who the Colts used on third down and in goal line situations.
The sad last years of the irsay colts in baltimore were in full swing. It was all over for colts in md. after getting ghosted in '76. 5:08 former lion qb and illini coach greg landry just a few years before becoming chicago blitz usfl qb. And it looks like bert jones actually made it thru the season. Then like the drunken coward he was irsay loaded up the mayflowers in the middle of the night and off to indy went the colts four years later.
@@matthewdaley746 That's on teddy marchibroda. Baltimore never thought he'd leave, especially in such a cowardly fashion. Unlike in houston where they welcomed adams to leave.
@@matthewdaley746 madden's raiders did plenty of overlooking of opponents themselves. pitt. immaculate reception game. broncos in '77 playoffs. And colts choked as a team, but the cuteness is on teddy.
Tight-ends are usually drafted late anyway.
4:10 Scorigami?
So if he didnt have a great college career, why was he drafted in the first round? Perhaps he had the raw talent, good size, etc. but was on a team who mostly ran the ball at Auburn? A few details like this would be helpful.
“Fred” McCall? Just trying to make sure we’re still awake?
In the 2009-10 NBA season the Warriors went to Portland to play the Trailblazers in the last game. The Warriors only had six healthy players, but because NBA rules said eight players had to dress for every game, they had to suit up two players who were injured. Of their six healthy players one got injured in the game and another fouled out. So they had to put in one of their injured players. He committed a foul and claimed an injury, removing him from the game. The other injured player did the same thing. This allowed the player who fouled out to keep playing. The Warriors (pre-Splash Brothers) went on to win the game.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how Broncos Coach Dan Reeves tried to convert Running Back Rob Lytle to a tight end, even though Lytle didn’t top a buck 90 on the weight scale.
Interesting. There was a time I believe in that situation, they would play with just four players.
Wait, this didn't occur in 1987?
STILL THOUGH The Indianapolis Colts are WAY WORSE than a 39.6. They should just SPIKE the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!
Reese McCall was blah, typical of players acquired by the Baltimore Colts from 1978 to 1983 which was a time when Bob Irsay sabotaged the franchise. Still followed the team despite knowing it was an afterthought, especially considering that the Orioles had just played in the World Series.
