  • During week 1 of the 1995 NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played the Philadelphia Eagles at Veterans Stadium, and they had absolutely no idea how to handle the turf, because running back Errict Rhett was wearing the wrong shoes. And Rhett's attempt to fix the problem deserves a deep dive three decades later for how defiant, how stubborn, and how stupid it was

As a kid in the early 70s, my football little league went to a game at the Vet. After the game, about which I remember nothing, they let us go down on the field. I had fun throwing pretend TD passes but I clearly remember the field being as hard as concrete. Because it was. Just a thin layer of AstroTurf over literal concrete.

Veterans stadium had a hole in the visitors locker room which allowed players to watch eagle cheerleaders dress.

I remember this game and the comment. Let’s not forget the Eagles’ OC was Jon Gruden, who later coached Tampa Bay to an NFC Championship game win against the Eagles en route to the Super Bowl. They mentioned that in America’s Game - 2002 Bucs and Gruden had showed highlights of this game to his team to prove a point that the Bucs had beaten the Eagles in Philly before.

Buccaneers coach: Put on the new shoes!
Rhett: Frankly, Coach, for who, for what?

Imagine how much better his numbers would've been if he had put on the right damn shoes to begin with.

What a difference a half makes when Rhett, after starting poorly because he was wearing the wrong shoes 👟-and putting on the new ones-he played better in the second half and helped his team win the game! 😊😊😊😊😊

in all these votings things theres often someone who just votes for someone else to keep it from being unanimous. to say it means the person really didnt think faulk deserved the award is reading it entirely too literally.

no clue Ricky pulled up in that game, also you can blame Randall for laying the dude out for a hit

I forgot about Rocky Waters comment. If I was the coach, he'd be out the door so fast his feet wouldn't touch the ground. It reminds me of Shaw's comment that he would rather lose than shoot free throws underhanded. Kobe would go out there in a pink tutu if it would help him win

I don't know why it took Rhett so long to put on a pair of shoes that would help him run well on the infamous Veterans Stadium turf. I wonder how badly the Bucs could've beaten the Eagles if he did it earlier. I remember watching this game on WTVT, but I don't think I was aware of this. I definitely remember my Bucs beating the Eagles by 2 possessions (I wasn't expecting that at all) and Ricky Watters' alligator arms late in the game, though.

Footwear has always been something in the NFL. Heck, a change of footwear from cleats to sneakers helped a team win a championship 90 years ago (the famous “Sneakers Game” of 1934 where the Giants changed footwear due to an icy surface at the Polo Grounds and ran up 27 unanswered points to overcome the Bears 30-13 and win the 1934 NFL title).

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about the Eagles-Buccaneers playoff game in 1979 and a controversial decision made by Eagles Kicker Tony Franklin, who took the field with only one shoe on.

The buccaneers started 5-2 and went 2-7, while the eagles started 1-3 and went 9-3 and won a playoff game.

The Bucs' nosedive combined with the ownership change that year and Rich McKay being promoted to GM the year prior cost the late Sam Wyche his head coaching job despite the Bucs finally ending their streak of seasons with 10+ losses.

Back in the day I hated Ricky waters for that pull up and comment but today nah, not with that cte and seeing former players like Mackey not able to remember anything long or short term ain’t worth it

I agree, I also remember the way he played the rest of the year, fighting for yards through contact with a pieced together old offensive line. But had he said, “I want to give it my all on every play, but if I get knocked out of the game, I can’t help my team at all, he would have been better off”

@@MrTim2031 and Thomas Everett was huge hitter too he would’ve knocked him in to next week or retirement. Plus I think that play was late in the game
