I just got one recently, and there are only a few changes I would make. 1. Make the detents tool less and quick changeable. Make the hat switches gated. They are high quality, but though I haven't personally found them to be troublesome I have heard from others that they hit the wrong directions in them frequently, which I believe is a valid issue. 3. Change the rotary encoders on the throttles themselves into axes. Oftentimes the things I want to use the encoders for just don't support them correctly, and they would really work better as axes. 4. Make some of the switches on the base swappable. It would be nice to be able to change out the switches on the base from 3 position momentary to maintained at times. This one's a bit nit picky, but it would be much appreciated. None of these are huge issues, and overall I'm very happy with the product I got. That depends if you have set up your throtle to go both forwards and backwards. But yes, that is what i thought aswell, until N00b mentioned SCM. I've only tried binding my throttle to speedlimiter+throttle forwards. I've only reversed with either thumbstick og buttons, with low speedlimit
I have the first and second T-50 throttles. The second I am using now as part of my Star Citizen HOTAS rig. I was very disappointed in the deletion of the detent from gen 1 to gen 2, but it is still a great throttle. I am a Virpil fan. I skipped CM2 because of the lack of a detent. I placed some visual markings on my throttle to indicate the center neutral thrust point, as that is critical for maneuvering, but it's still a pain to have to look down at the throttle to verify. As soon as I saw the CM3 included a detent, and a very customizable one at that, I dropped a pre-order. This will be my new Star Citizen throttle. I use a HOTAS setup, because as an IRL pilot, it's just how I roll. Thanks for the video Noob! As always, you are the tip of the spear when it comes to new sim hardware.
CM1 is actually better. More buttons, adjustable detents, etc. That's why when they went up on e-bay they can go for $800 sometimes - instead of buying a CM2 or CM3 with another button box. Besides you can 3D print the finger lifts: forums.mudspike.com/t/throttle-finger-lifts/9954 www.dropbox.com/sh/upeudspduudlyo9/AABvKRhplsAIKaKyL44tDA7Ta?dl=0
KEEP it. I didn't buy one when they released it and regretted it. Then one day I found someone on discord that wanted to get rid of their CM v1 at a reasonable price! Now I'm SOOOO glad I didn't get a CM2 or waited for a CM3. We don't need a separate button box. We can adjust our detents to our exact needs too. We could 3D print something and add it like they did with the CM3 what Troll is doing: forums.mudspike.com/t/throttle-finger-lifts/9954 www.thingiverse.com/controllr/designs
i ordered mine the day it went up, I CANT WAIT! Thinking of pairing it with a Real Simulator FSSB-R3 and their F-16 side grip.. Not much info about those though!
The CosmoSim detent is actually meant to be positioned at the center point of the axis, to provide a "zero thrust" detent when the throttle axis is used for both forward and reverse thrust. There's no good way to quickly find this position without it.
I agree, with space sims at least there are two options: middle detent point for 0 throttle (my first option I am used to), and 0-100 throttle with a button for reverse... it's a matter of giving it a try
@@lmorenoserrano There's also the option to put the detent point at 75% for games like Elite Dangerous where you have an optimal approach or turning throttle amount.
Had I known I would have waited!! I just got the FedEx shipping notification that my Virpil order is on it's way. I had no idea there was going to be a new throttle released when I ordered... Well, I should be able to get a decent price on my CM2 if I decide to upgrade. I am certainly going to use the heck out of it. I have some serious flying to do.
How is the CONTROL PANEL #2 testing coming along NOOBIFIER ? Did you get the landing lights to sync with DCS exactly as designed? I'm talking about all of the landing lights not just the 3
I have not had a chance to look at it. I will when I return from deployment in August if I can get my hands on one for sure. I am keeping notes on questions like this and plan to do helpful updates. Sorry, but this is a case where my IRL job takes priority over the content. Thanks for the support and great question.
Pre-ordered! Not sure why people are unhappy with this one. Products get updated, sometimes you win sometimes you don't. Virpil are a business and it wouldn't make sense for them to offer a CM2 upgrade kit, that would be like Apple making CPUs hot-swappable...
The cosmosim detent looks like it would be great for a neutral position. If you use the throttle for forward and backward thrust without modifiers it would be a great 0 position reminder
For DCS there is a trick for getting around the need for the detente using a CM2. You can set the throttle to only go to just before AFB, then set one of the little red switches between the throttle and flap levers to give you the rest of the throttle and allow you into AFB mode. In SC, if I weren't using car pedals for forward, reverse and brakes; I'd use the same trick for forward and reverse movement toggling. I say all of this as I just got my CM2 6 weeks ago. And while this is the sort of solution I envisioned for the detente issue, I dont think it's an issue. I do like the longer throw on the throttle, it would make the minute movements required for refueling in DCS easier. But regardless, this area the CM shines even without the longer throw as its ease of movement is amazing. The downside of this is if you DO play multiple games that require detentes, swapping between detentes, then having to tune the detente based on in game "finding" the right spot and screwing it down would get tiresome to most I think. If I hadn't found the trick with flipping a switch to go into AFB, I'd want this regardless. Great video as always, thanks for helping us learn about all the tech toys for us to play with! I watch a bunch of DCS videos, and I'm starting to hear DCS guys and content makers say they watch your videos as their preferred source of tech reviews as well, so congrats on growing your audience and hitting 60k!
how does the red switch work more specifically? like do you push the throttle all the way till it won't go any further and then flip red switch,,,i'm not sure what you mean and how do you know when to stop if you can see your throttle position on the screen while flying 400 knots in enemy territory?
@@harpoon_bakery162 So the way it works for me in game is this. I use the T2 switch as a toggle for AFB mode, T2 is the switch immediately to the right of the throttles themselves. When that toggle is off, my throttle is limited to 80% max of its normal range; so it ranges from 1% to 80% of max throttle. Not physically, but how the game sees my device. When I switch the toggle on, the throttle in game now has the full 100% range of motion and AFBs will kick on once you pass the 80% throttle mark. The net effect of this is to limit access to your AFBs to when that toggle is switched on. It's a useful trick, and one that once you recognize how it works, you start to see other things you can use this with in other games. This is a UA-cam video to explain to you how to do it, he's a bit long winded, but he is thorough in his explanations and he's explained what you need to know by the 7 minute mark. ua-cam.com/video/Hs18EfOlb6U/v-deo.html
@TheNOOBIFIER1337 Great review, was looknig to buy a setup myself... can you explain what the secure card payment in the virpil shop is about? I have never heard about this is why... Thanks in advance!
I believe it’s just what they use in Belarus’s. Can you please contact them for clarification, I don’t work for them so I don’t really know the details.
Now we'll wait and see if VKB actually releases their ~$200 throttle this month like they've been talking about lately. You should definitely try to get one for review if they do.
They have specifically said that it comes out before end of lunar year, that is February 2021... They will release new grip on this month, just waiting to get confirmation for their shipment from China to reveal it.
5:00 Regarding the Star Citizen "CosmoSim" detent - what I found this to be more useful, in my opinion, was not relating to SCM vs afterburner but 50% "full stop." As Star Citizen's use of HOTAS allows for full forward and full backward thrusts, finding that full stop middle was always difficult when using my X-56 Rhino. My way around that, using the X-56, was to increase my dead zone in the middle and also turn down the thrust limiter to 0% - this was especially necessary when being scanned by the Space Police. The slightest touch on my X-56 and I was suddenly a fugitive from the law. With the VPC CM3, and the centered "CosmoSim" detent; I will now be able to easily feel my full stop 50% location without having to adjust my thrust limiter or increasing my throttle dead zone.
It’s very overbuilt though. I imagine the 3D printed stuff wouldn’t last a lifetime or operate without maintenance... this is truly a fantastic solution
@@NOOBIFIER1337 Oh I'm blown away by the engineering that has clearly gone into this, Virpil are truly pushing the boundaries of what consumer level gear means. The 3D printed things that people make obviously won't last as long but I would expect those people have access to a 3D printer and can make replacements.
Quick question on the detents... For the afterburner detent, is it possible to have to far enough to allow some range of travel after the lift? I only ask as I fly in msfs and They usually have reverse thrust - Main power setting - Max power - TOGA. So I'd like to put max and toga behind a detent with enough room to be easily able to set it to the correct power setting while leaving enough play for the main power setting if that makes any sense?
They are completely swappable, PLUS can be moved about 15 Deg either way so between the 10 included pieces, and the adjustment you should be able to get the exact performance you are looking for.. there are also those who have made 3D printed customs ones
@@MichaelHenfrey There was a period of time when they were giving people who owned a CM2 a 10% discount on the upgrade. You should maybe contact them and find out if that still applicable
Considering the cost of these throttles I think Virpil should come up with detent upgrade kit for customers that own the CM2. Even if that upgrade is not as good as the CM3 version. Leaving the CM2 crowd without a solution makes me not want to invest in anything from Virpil for many years until after they have refined all of their products.
I was going to buy the original throttle which had magnetic detents but was unable to as they sold out in the time it took to fill in the shipping information. Then they removed to detents all together and I lost interest in Virpil. I was waiting for the new VKB throttle to release but how many years do I wait? I'll consider Virpil again assuming they aren't sold out for months again.
I have the mt50 throttle. Not CM. By luck it has the detent on the axis. I don't think i will need to buy a new throttle soon. I'm happy with mine. Very Good quality. I m glad to see Virpil is listening to their customers.
Does lifting the throttle for idle/AB detent send a signal out the controller? I ask because DCS usually has an "idle cutoff" key binding for most engines and it would be nice to have this bound to the throttles position instead of pressing a button
I would need to buy one for that and I don’t feel it’s something I would ever use. I have never used FOIP and I see this as another “ thing “ we didn’t need in SC.
went balls deep here and replacing my TM Warthog for VPC MongoosT-50CM2 Base, CM3 Throttle, Constellation ALPHA-L grip and deskmounts! Cant wait to get it all :D
There was a version before CM, that makes CM as their second gen, CM2 as third gen and CM3 their fourth generation. The original T-50 throttle was sold very short time and small batch before CM suddenly was released. As usual, VIRPIL keeps changing their products constantly, and not always to better.
Hilariously I just bought a CM2 throttle last week and got the payment taken an hour before the notification of the CM3 was sent out. Was glad to see that the changes were minor and wasn't fussed about a detent but there was a 'aw shit' moment lol
@@NOOBIFIER1337 yeah I did consider it but as I live in the UK the brexit thing is going to impact shipping for a while. hello guys , I am interested in buying one but i have a question about virpil products , I have a 20 years old saitek x52 and a x55 and both have soft plastic /rubber who degraded in some oozy tacky schmoo , both are still operable but really unpleasant to hold on , SO is virpil do use those rubbery plastics on their throttle and sticks that degrades within a few years ?? and thank you for your answers.
I have the earlier version of the throttle from before the CM. It's the last one that had detents. The CM1 and CM2's lack of them has been a major reason why I wouldn't consider buying them. If my current throttle decides to give up the ghost it's good to know there's a suitable replacement for it now.
If memory serves me correctly - You most likely have the CM version 1 or CM version 2. CM version 3 lost the detents. Then they came out with the CM2 and now CM3. I also have a CM version 1.
is it possible to use the aerobatic version with two detents in star citizen, so that one detent always fits scm on any ship and the other fits going from 100% thrust into afterburner? would seem like the ideal setup to me but would possibly require changes in star citizen. or is scm now always at the same position in star citizen with the new logarithmic scale?
With the amount that I have just paid for the CM2, I would think they would offer CM2 owners a detent upgrade for a ressonable price. I have thought about getting another joystick in addition to the one that I already have, in order to use 2 x joysticks for space sims, but now I feel that with this new throttle it shows me that Virpl could have sorted out the detent issue of the CM2. I will no longer buy another vipl product until they sort this issue out. there is no way I could justify buying a whole new thrtottle.
I’m an quite sure an upgrade kit is impractical mechanically. It replaces the entire grip and sensor pack. It would cost more to ship the update than to send a new device IMO.
@@NOOBIFIER1337 I already contacted them on the weekend to ask if its possible for me to send the throttle-unit back. Anyway i pre-ordered after watching your video. In the worst case I will sell the CM2 once the CM3 arrives.
Very impressive. Lovely how in Star Citizen you can use the detent to match your SCM but also to match 0 in the middle so that you can then set your thrust forward or back. Nonetheless, an upgrade kit for those with the CM2 would have been nice given the price (not that I can afford it anyway).
My new WarBRD and right Alpha grip came faulted. Love the feel but Virpil has some quality issues they need to work through. Note: I am still not giving them up, but at this price point, their should not be quality issues

How hard was it to install the CM3 kit onto your CM2 throttle? was there a lot of Allen screws to disassemble and fart with? like did the entire top cover have to come off?

I'm curious what you think about Virpil's decision to use plastic detents instead of metal, I suspect they will wear faster over time. I'm also disappointed in the new lever locking mechanism, there's too much play and it feels like the right throttle lever is dragging the other one (unlike the CM2 that was really tightly secured).

CM1 is actually better. More buttons, adjustable detents, etc. That's why when they went up on e-bay they can go for $800 sometimes - instead of buying a CM2 or CM3 with another button box.
Besides you can 3D print the finger lifts:

Man, I wish I could get Virpil here in the U.S, but they don't have a U.S store and so it's insanely expensive. Their products look insane!
My god man. This is way beyond anything I could afford.
But it’s nice to dream 😜👍
On order and waiting patiently for it.
Congrats.
I still have and love my CM1.
We could 3D print something and add it like they did with the CM3 what Troll is doing:

i ordered mine the day it went up, I CANT WAIT!
I would use the CosmoSim detent for 0 throttle, personally.
@@HenrikDanielsson You are right, with ED it is very useful, thanks!
@@NOOBIFIER1337 --- well thanks for keeping it in mind and I wish you luck on your extended deployment. Get back safe!
So glad I didn’t order a CM2. The detent was the only thing holding me back. Now I have no problem buying these.
Great review!
Figures they finally shipped me the CM2 I'd ordered lol
Yup, I got mine the day the cm3 was released. Feels bad
For DCS there is a trick for getting around the need for the detente using a CM2. You can set the throttle to only go to just before AFB, then set one of the little red switches between the throttle and flap levers to
give you the rest of the throttle and allow you into AFB mode.
Swapping is done in seconds
how does the red switch work more specifically? like do you push the throttle all the way till it won't go any further and then flip red switch,,,i'm not sure what you mean and how do you know when to stop if you can see your throttle position on the screen while flying 400 knots in enemy territory?
@@fubarace1027 great, i will try this for sure. got it bookmarked. Thanks so much !!!!!
Can they not make the detent parts available for the other throttles they have released?
They are heavily embedded and would not be a simple swap. The major working parts.
Feels good to have bought the best equipment on the market :)
@@NOOBIFIER1337 Ah I see, thanks for the quick reply though.
I will look into it and update if anyone needs the info.
Lol NO
where can i find the mountingbrackets 1:42?
These items are Monstertech. There is a promo for 5% in each video
This is very nice. It does look suspiciously similar to some very inventive 3D printed custom jobs i've seen on YT for the previous versions.
Preorder done, thanks for video.
Can you use the cosmo-sim detents without the lever pulls?
Can the levers be removed if you don't intend to use them?
@@NOOBIFIER1337 Brilliant thanks so much! Might be worth the upgrade from my cm2 then and a perfect excuse to get a control panel while I'm at it
@@MichaelHenfrey There was a period of time when they were giving people who owned a CM2 a 10% discount on the upgrade. You should maybe contact them and find out if that still applicable
Good news!
What ever happened to the RSI web cam for optimization of the FOiPs?
Great accelerator, from what I've seen and researched it's the best currently (beating the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog and X56).
Thanks for a another great review!
Not that I know if, but joystick gremlin has that feature
I've waiting for it, thanks noobifier
I've now got a Cm2 for sale.
Noobifier are you going to do a break down on the Tobii Eye Tracker 5?
I would need to buy one for that and I don’t feel it’s something I would ever use. I have never used FOIP and I see this as another “ thing “ we didn’t need in SC.
How does the 3-way rocker work? In which spatial direction are the axis set?
They are all in the direction that makes the most sense based on what digit are used. Thumb is back and forth, finger rockers are vertical
@@NOOBIFIER1337 aha, nice, thanks for the prompt reply!

What type of chair do you have for your flight sim setup?
If you type noobifier chair monstertech
There was a version before CM, that makes CM as their second gen, CM2 as third gen and CM3 their fourth generation.
The original T-50 throttle was sold very short time and small batch before CM suddenly was released. As usual, VIRPIL keeps changing their products constantly, and not always to better.
Hilariously I just bought a CM2 throttle last week and got the payment taken an hour before the notification of the CM3 was sent out.
Was glad to see that the changes were minor and wasn't fussed about a detent but there was a 'aw shit' moment lol
That is upsetting. Have you considered asking them either for a discount or upgrading to CM3
@@NOOBIFIER1337 yeah I did consider it but as I live in the UK the brexit thing is going to impact shipping for a while. The 4th was the cutoff date for delivery before things get messy and I decided it wasn't worth the risk.
I'll be more than happy with the CM2, I've been dreaming of one for ages and the CM3 doesn't make it any less of an awesome throttle 😊

My birthday present for sure.
an Upgrade kit would be nice from Virpil
Some day I hope I could get that one, THE ONE of all the throttles
hello guys , I am interested in buying one but i have a question about virpil products , I have a 20 years old saitek x52 and a x55 and both have soft plastic /rubber who degraded in some oozy tacky schmoo , both are still operable but really unpleasant to hold on , SO is virpil do use those rubbery plastics on their throttle and sticks that degrades within a few years ?? and thank you for your answers.
I currently own the CM, may have to make this upgrade..
@@kennethjones8683 I have the non-CM version 2. It has the smaller grip handle with detents.
Very cool
is it possible to use the aerobatic version with two detents in star citizen, so that one detent always fits scm on any ship and the other fits going from 100% thrust into afterburner? would seem like the ideal setup to me but would possibly require changes in star citizen. or is scm now always at the same position in star citizen with the new logarithmic scale?
It moves but so does the Cosmo so it’s easy to set it
Looks great!
Great stuff.
I invested literally a few weeks ago and today the CM2 arrives... Thinking about sending it back and waiting another 2 months for the CM3.
We have no confirmed production or shipping date. I would suggest contacting their CS and asking if that is possible.
@@NOOBIFIER1337 I already contacted them on the weekend to ask if its possible for me to send the throttle-unit back. Anyway i pre-ordered after watching your video. In the worst case I will sell the CM2 once the CM3 arrives.
That sounds expensive. I hope they offer a solution
@@NOOBIFIER1337 btw: From the Email of Virpil, they said shipping of the first Units will begin at the End of January 2021
Very impressive. Lovely how in Star Citizen you can use the detent to match your SCM but also to match 0 in the middle so that you can then set your thrust forward or back. Nonetheless, an upgrade kit for those with the CM2 would have been nice given the price (not that I can afford it anyway).
As I said elsewhere. Mechanically impractical to offer an upgrade... it pretty much replaced the entire throttle and grip.
@@NOOBIFIER1337 I must have missed that one. Thanks for the reply!
My new WarBRD and right Alpha grip came faulted. Love the feel but Virpil has some quality issues they need to work through. Note: I am still not giving them up, but at this price point, their should not be quality issues
I already have a unfulfilled order for the CM2 base and throttle plus the alpha R. I've tired to contact them to see if they would swap it out for the CM3, but nothing yet. Would be nice if they did! Great review, thanks.
I contacted them on Monday asking the same thing, today on Friday still no response but they just processed the order and charged my credit card so I guess im stuck with the CM2
@@NGlanister2 I heard back, they said they can cancel my current order and redo an order for the CM3, however I've been waiting a while and don't want to lose my place in the queue for stock. So I've stuck with the CM2 for now. It's a full order with other bits so I'd have to drop the whole order and start again...
You've almost got me convinced to buy one. Afraid to get one cause then i won't be able to fly on my gaming computer at work. Or buy 2...
Such a great design
I would love it if they did stream deck buttons on there throttle so we could have custom icons maybe with better feeling buttons
He did not review the Longer shaft.. Longer shaft means more displacement of fingers from idle position to Full throttle right?
It’s minimal. I didn’t notice it at first
@@NOOBIFIER1337 you think its better?
@@daemon3spade I think they made it long so they could put the extra levers on it. it fine. Both are good
@@NOOBIFIER1337 And give space for the led buttons on idle
Hmmm, to upgrade my cm2 or not to upgrade. That is the question
I wish more tech product companies had this level of quality in their products.
How hard was it to install the CM3 kit onto your CM2 throttle? was there a lot of Allen screws to disassemble and fart with? like did the entire top cover have to come off?
It is impossible. It is a full throttle. The changes include the entire grip, arms and sensors.
@@NOOBIFIER1337 great thanks, sounds like it's worth 500 then.
I have the VPC MONGOOST-50CM THROTTLE - does anyone know if there is a way to change out the black buttons for the new type?
Not an essential, but would be nice to have it match the panel I have from them (OCD-ness)
Asked on the forum but noooooo reply.
I dont know if thats possible. I suppose if they are the same switches, then the caps would come off..
Wonder if I can retro fit this to my original T50? I MISS my detents!
I made a detent mod for my T50 mark 2 , here's the link forum.virpil.com/index.php?/topic/2174-quick-and-easy-detent-for-mongoose-t-50-throttle-version-3/
Damn that thing is sexy! I wish there was a way to stick this and the MFP and two sticks onto the Monstertech chair, with a tablet MFD and mouse at hand...it's close though!
price?
I bought a CM2 just for Star Citizen so I don't think I will upgrade. I concur with Magsidious though, it would be excellent if they had an upgrade path.
Outstanding.
Oh man, if I had mo money! Virpil is quite awesome.
Wow, this is a great feature to have. Will definitely consider the CM3 over the CM2 as I don't own either of them yet and I also have DCS. Thanks for all the useful info as usual
What kind of connectors does it use? I know they are USB, but 5-pin? Does it come with an adapter or is that separate?
Everything is USB
