I think the best way to describe Band-Maid, is not what genre they play in, but that they are their own distinct sound (genre?). At least that is how I describe them to friends. You will find Metal, Rock, Punk, Pop, Jazz, Blues, etc. They all get to shine, and I love that they are one of the few bands that really consider the bass as "one of the guitars", if you will. As a bassist you will love to watch MISA flip back and forth from pick to slap in a blink. Insightful reaction and I enjoyed it! Thanks!
I noticed her doing hybrid picking during the YokoAri show. Maybe she's done it before and I didn't notice. The camera was zoomed in on her fingers. She was using the pick with her middle and ring fingers. This is something country guitars do a lot; pick the bass line and use two fingers playing either chords or melody with it. It's very cool but it takes a bit of practice to get smooth and even. I don't think bassists use this technique much at all, they'll tend to use their thumb and fingers. Some bassists don't like the sharp sound a pick gives.

@@surfingasongwave MISA said she started doing this pick-flip kind of naturally long time ago, and that she never drops the pick. There was an interview with her I think in 2020 during a Bass Day (11.11), with Chris Peppler as a host. She has shown in detail how she does it, and talked at length about it. You can see her doing this pick flip already in 2018 in "onset." MISA can play all styles, but she rarely does tapping. She demonstrated that she can do it in her intro to CLANG during the European Tour in 2019. There was a lovely "tapping battle" with Kanami. Maybe Kanami challenged her to do tapping, I don't know. Because Kanami does tapping a lot. MISA accepted the challenge, but she never does tapping in BAND-MAID songs anyway. But she often plays fingerstyle, pick and slap. Kanami also never uses whammy bar, except in "onset." She also demonstrated that she can do it, but I did not see that she would use the whammy bar in any other song.
@@VladimirChupin I first heard of Chris Peppler when he had MISA on his radio show. He put her at ease and got her to open up about her upbringing and her feelings about music. Being sponsored by Sapporo Beer might have helped! He made it clear that he knew who she was and was really impressed with her playing. There were some still photos that went along with it, but it's been taken down now.
I describe Band Maid as hard rock fusion. They often have rock, metal, punk and progressive rock elements that almost always come with a catchy, uplifting chorus. Bass is always high in the mix and gets a solo feature in many songs. MISA, the bassist, is all over the neck. She also flips between pick and slap for tonal shifts…in the same song. Drums are metal/punk; incredibly fast and creative fills sometimes through two full measures. They are in full creative control of their music. All are world class musicians, and the outfits are meant as a set up for minds to be blown by the sounds and power. I’ve seen them live. After dozens of shows attended since 1978, Band Maid is in the top 3 of greatest performances I’ve ever heard. My current favorite song? “Puzzle,” official live music video
Bass stands out in almost every song. Hard to categorize them because IMO the guitars are rock/metal, the bass is funk/rock, the drums metal/rock, and the vocals rock/pop. They call themselves hard rock, and I think it's the best fit also. I saw them 9 times live over the last two years. The shows are great, positive, high energy.
Band-Maid are extremely talented and have over 120 great songs ! They shine when performing live =) I saw them at Daytona Speedway and in Charlotte last year ! I think they will be coming back to Atlanta this year ! Check out "Real Existece" Live or the "Blooming" MV Thanks ✌🤘
They will be back in the States. They love touring the States. But buy tickets as soon as they announce the tour: they sell out fast. They are an amazingly tight live act and their musicianship is impeccable. I saw them twice last Spring and be assured: Band-Maid puts on entertaining show. Don't worry about which genre you label them. Band-Maid is their own genre. They blend pop, punk, metal, classic hard rock. prog, jazz, rap, and whatever floats their fancy: they like to experiment and their songwriting goes many unexpected places. Band-Maid will surprise you. The deeper you dig into Band-Maid the more you will be rewarded. Miku Kobato, the band's founder, primary lyricist, and rhythm guitarist, is very fond of puns and word-play. She is the one who writes lyrics that switch back and forth between English and Japanese, often using homophones from both languages to great effect. The Band-Maid, Band-Aid rhyme isn't the only language trick she plays: there are different ways of spelling "Band-Maid" in Kanji and one of those spellings can translate to either "Underworld Orchestra" or "Band from Hell". I have that T-Shirt. This is a clever band with a very subtle and dry sense of humor.
Make sure you check out BAND-MAID's song 'Unleash!!!!!' with Strawberrik. She wants _magical girls,_ she'll get _magical girls_ with that song/video. Literally! BAND-MAID have one foot firmly planted in rock, one in metal, one in punk, one in funk, and one in pop. That's a lot of feet... I don't know how that works, but it's still perfectly true. 🦶

BMR+ and Strawberrik, I just pulled up your reaction to my new favorite band in the world. These five fantastic Japanese females rock my world. You mentioned that they were in Atlanta and you missed their concert. I was at that concert (I'm from Atlanta) and believe me it was worth the ticket to see them live. They are actually a great live concert band. I was so impressed with that concert that I flew to Minneapolis to catch their concert there. The Atlanta concert was a "Bucket List" event for me (I'm 75), but I had to see them live again. I'm looking forward to them touring the U.S. again and plan to attend one or two of those concerts (even if they are not in Atlanta). If you react to any more Band Maid songs, I suggest you listen to in live music videos. Misa, their bassist, is an integral part of the Band-Maid sound. Her poly-rhythmic playing adds quite a bit to their entire sound. Akane's drumming is always intense with her incredible fills and flourishes which also adds immensely to their sound. One live video, I would suggest you and Strawberrik listen to is a two-song clip "Dice/Hate?" from their one-hour performance at the Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago this past summer (2023). That clip has gone VIRAL on UA-cam and the internet. "Hate?" features a "call and respond" "conversation/duel" between Misa and Kanami, their lead guitarist. The band members loved the duel, the live audience went crazy, the internet loves it, and I'm sure you will also. If the band comes back to Atlanta, I'll be there and hope to see both of you there.
Yo BMR. MISA on lead bass, is affectionately called "the barefoot assassin" and is always high in the mix. No egos in this band. Everyone is featured. For more MISA check out, FROM NOW ON, INFLUENCER, DICE, ONSET-LIVE, PLAY-LIVE, DOMINATION-LIVE and many more. BAND-MAID is melodic hard rock while delving into acoustics, instrumentals, ballads, anime, traditional Japanese instruments and nailing it all. Keep falling down the pigeon hole and you will confirm. Listening to rock since the 60's and the Awesome BAND-MAID reignited my enthusiasm. Peace. 1.6
Hej BassMusicReactions+, welcome to the world of Band-Maid ! You will have a lot of fun with Band-Maid. The musicality is insane and the Bass is no exception. Looking forward to the next Band-Maid reaction.
The genre is Band-Maid. Everything from acoustic to solid metal, but generally hard rock. Misa on bass is a genius but it will take you a few reactions to appreciate each individuals contribution to the sound- Miku (Red Rose, Founder, Lyrics, Backing vocals/Rhythm Guitar) Kanami (Music, Lead guitar).
The makers of the Japanese anime show, Kengan Ashura (on Netflix), asked BAND-MAID to create a Season 2 end credits outro and this song was the result. Welcome to the BM rabbit hole; it only gets better from here: Domination (2020 live) Freedom (2020 live) DICE (both MV and 2023 Lollapalooza) Secret My Lips (MV) & Secret MAIKO Lips Warning! (MV) From Now On (MV)
Hard Rock is what BAND-MAID consider themselves. But to confine them to one genre does them a disservice. They have so many influences and they will shapeshift between them, not only from song to song but even within the same song. Rock, Punk, Funk, Power Pop, Jazz and Metal, even acoustic ballads and Traditional Japanese. They know no bounds or limit. 'Shambles' was one of their Anime Theme Song commissions. This one is for the season two closer for the Netflix anime, Kengan Ashura. MISA, The Barefoot Assassin, has always played Lead Bass. She does not believe there is no money to be made above the fifth fret. She works the whole neck! She never just accompanies the Rhythm Guitar, but provides a Counterpoint to Kanami's Lead Guitar. She, and drummer, Akane, not only attended to the Tokyo School Of Music together, but they were the Rhythm Section for one of Kanami's previous projects before BAND-MAID. So, when Kanami joined Miku to form BAND-MAID, they were the first ones she thought to bring on board.
Welcome to *Band Maid* ! So much to explore, and as others have mentioned in the chat.. Don't try to figure out their genre, they *are* the genre 😁 🤘😀🤘
Great reaction guys. If you love bass then you have found the right band. Misa the barefoot assassin is one of the best bassists out there. She is an absolute beast. Band Maid is one of the best bands I have ever heard. They are master musicians and write such catchy tunes. They are one of a kind.
During the band's genesis, the rhythm guitarist was still learning so the bassist played as the "lead bassist". So, now that the rhythm guitarist is proficient, she still plays in that way.
Well, I would say, it was not out of necessity but because MISA simply loves this style. Her main influence is Paz Lenchantin, and Paz, as MISA puts it, "walks around a lot." My favourite band with Paz is The Entrance Band, that's where she really shines with her prominent bass. MISA is just great, and that greatness necessitates that she demonstrates it. She's like a millionaire whose wealth is naturally visible because it would be stupid for a millionaire to wear chip clothes and dine at McDonald's. You see a millionaire driving a luxury car, wearing suits from the best designers and spending time in high-class restaurants. And that's what MISA is doing with her talent. She just shows it.
Please check out some of their live videos! A great one to start with is Domination! (Official Live Video). They add an extra spotlight for each member in the live version, and you get a taste of their personalities. They are always having fun and will always put a smile on your face, while smashing you over the head with their hard music 😛
Sorry you missed them at Buckhead Theater. I was there! My second time. First time I had to travel to DC, this time I inly had to walk about five minutes from my office! 🤣
'Maid Rock' is all about the songs and 100% effort to create and especially deliver in their live 'serving'. They don't seem to second-guess what the industry wants...I think only influenced when it's an anime commission, like this song. You guys should see their diversity and live playing for sure 🤘🤘🤘
I think this question was asked to Miku in one of the interviews, if the anime producers make any specific requests for the songs they commission. And Miku said that at least for Different, there was no pressure and no limitations. The guys in the anime studio liked the song from the first listen, and immediately accepted it. In case of Sense, they asked that there will be two or three specific words in the lyrics, like "wings" and "angels." But Miku read the manga completely, and came easily with the lyrics which fitted the anime perfectly. Kanami and Miku always do their homework for such things, though. We may also recall how Miku and Saiki were working on Hibana/Spark: they went to Saiki's friend who played that Rainbow Six Siege game, and listened to a long lecture from him about the terminology and the gameplay. That's where all those "Knock, Knock, Knock" and "One shot, one kill" phrases are coming from.
Band-Maid is one of the few bands/groups that you don't have to use filters on their videos for copyright. The Ladies themselves enjoy watching reactions to the music, as long as you are offering a real reaction and not a grab for click or money, the Ladies, their Management, and their Record Company, allow reactions to go through. They do claim the monetization, however for a reactor who offers a truly transformative critique, they share the revenue back to the reactor. I know of 5 or 6 reactors who get a few tenths of a penny per view shared back to them, but it does all add up. One reactor I know crunched the numbers and said he earned $6.20 from his Band-Maid reactions in 2022. When Band-Maid first started, Miku the rhythm guitarist couldn't play guitar, and the guitar was more of an ornament. So to cover the area of the songs where a rhythm guitar should be, they asked MISA the bassist to step up and fill those areas. It has now become a central part of the "Band-Maid Sound". And Band-Maid doesn't do a "Fade to silence" like other bands do. They will end abruptly, or do a trash can. However some of their endings will still catch you off guard, there are a couple that end on the upbeat the still throw me when I listen to them.
Enjoyed your reaction. You all put a lot of thought into it. From Now On is an instrumental. But has a fantastic melody. Lot of their songs are very catchy. Domination Live has a chorus that will get stuck in your head.
Band Maid are their own genre. Pop, rock, metal, punk, thrash, speed, sludge. These girls do it all, and do it well. Highly recommend Moratorium live from the Zepp. Also Domination live, Freedom live are good places to start. A lot of fantastic music from these ladies. You will enjoy this journey.
You have barely touched the surface. In my opinion they're the best rock band on the planet. They write their own music. They play a huge genre of music and the more you get into them the more you'll realize how good they really are. Watch the live videos and you'll understand them even more. They're really a genre unto themselves, a hybrid.
I think in their early days they were marketed as a pop rock or pop punk band, and sounded similar to The Bangles. Their second EP had more rock-oriented songs, and after they started writing and arranging their own music it became much more hard rock oriented. They have a pretty wide range though, they have some progressive tendencies and some thrash and metal sounds with sing-along choruses (and sometimes all in the same song). It gets hard to pigeon-hole them, but I don't think anyone's "marketing" them anymore ... they're doing what they want to do.
This band made their music in the rift between Rock and Metal, like a classic rock band playing metal from the first era. I love so much. (Google translate)
You didn't even touch the tip of the iceberg with this Band. Much more to discover and to understand their versatilty. And remenber that this song has been created specificaly for the outtro of the anime Kengan Ashuraseason 2.
Yes, Shambles is the Akane show with special guest stars Kanami, MISA, Saiki and Miku. But wait! Was it really the Kanami show, because she wrote the song and played it with such forcefulness and exquisite abandon. Or was it the MISA show because without MISA, the rapturous drive of the song would be a ride on four flat tires. Or was it the Saiki show because she focused the sonic chaos into a song with melodies that could express Miku's lyrics like no other singer could. Without Saiki, Shambles might sound like a familiar instrumental. Or was it the Miku show because, damn, she wrote the lyrics, played the important rhythm parts, and added her unique brand of backup vocals that have become a defining "sixth instrument" of Band-Maid. So exactly whose show was it? It was the Maid's show, as usual! 🤘🎀🤘Thx, Guys!

for me i think band-maid style is hard/rock and sometimes punk rock. They have only one song completly in english the song is Dragon cries, they have a video of it. Interresting song, different than their usual styl;e the song is more dark
THE best Hard Rock band on Earth, though they use Metal, Punk, Funk and other elements too. Their appearance is the concept of the band's founder, rhythm guitarist Miku, who wanted to create a cognitive dissonance (what she terms The Gap) for the audience upon seeing kawaii (cute) maids banging out Hard Rock. This song SHAMBLES is for the closing credits of an anime but they shine brightest live, where you can see their musical abilities close up (Jimmy Page did and then went backstage to ask Akane the drummer for a selfie!). Their 1 hour Lollapalooza set from a few months ago is up on UA-cam - one of the best Hard Rock performances I've seen since I saw Zeppelin in 79. PS No need to reverse their MV's or make them transparent or whatever as they never mind reactions....and it's not nice for my brain seeing them all playing back to front!
If you listen, it is Miku on rhythm guitar filling in the parts that most bass players fill. Misa is then free to provide counterpoint to Kanami's lead guitar.

Yes, I was thinking the same while listening to Bruno's attempts to classify them. For me, "metal" is by definition what Metallica was playing in the 80s. That's how the term appeared. Or maybe Manowar, since they were promoting "metal is a religion" thing. Later a lot of other styles of music appeared, like growling vocalists, and since "metal" was already thought to be the extreme genre of heavy music, everything heavier than Metallica and Manowar were also classified as "metal." Then people started going back in time, trying to find the "roots of metal," and that's when the idea came up that the Fathers of Metal were Black Sabbath. For me it just shows how futile are the attempts to categorize music into genres. I may say that somebody plays "in the genre of Metallica," for example. But if I say "it's metal," many people will insist that Metallica is not metal... Crazy. BAND-MAID, and all the Japanese bands in general, don't understand this genre gradation. Or, rather, they treat it more from the visual point of view, so it seems to me. Like, if you promote yourself as a "metal" band, you have to dress in leather and chains, that kind of thing. Naturally, BAND-MAID don't want to call themselves "metal" because they don't dress in leather and chains. Although I would say that Thrill is metal, Freezer is metal, Shake That!! is metal... And that's only from their second album, New Beginning. Unseen World for me is all prog metal. But it's all so stretched and artificial. BAND-MAID is doing BAND-MAID things, what else can we say...

To call BAND-MAID heavy metal is kind of like saying all you can get at Cracker Barrel is sausage and eggs lol. BAND-MAID is so diverse that I can't even begin to label them with any single sub genre of rock. Each album has a different feel and sound that is still unmistakenly BAND-MAID. I love that when I listen to them I think, damn that was jazzy or damn that was funky or damn that was hard, sometimes in the same song lol. It keeps me interested to hear what is next and keeps me from getting bored. Their sound is like the weather in spring time, wait 5 minutes, it will change lol.

Bandmaid doing Bandmaid things. I don't think you can pigeon hole them into a genre as they draw from many genres. This is just one song of a multitude of different songs. This is also from an Animation series so the lyrics are based on that series.
No need to do "magic" copyright strike edits...BAND-MAID never blocks official or official live trax. Although as a left-handed bass player, I do enjoy imagining that they are left-handed. BTW, lead singer Saiki is left-handed.
Band Maid's genre is, umm, Band Maid. They really love their fans. Want proof? Listen to "About us" which they wrote for their fans when they couldn't tour during COVID.
Is this the first time you've heard them? They are hard rock first with punk/pop/metal/pop punk/alt/prog with jazz and funk and blues here and there for spice. Don't worry about the lyrics yet. You'll hear something different in the music each time you listen. As far as MISA (bassist) goes, she's amazing. She strums, plucks, picks slaps and even taps. Nobody in this band is in the background, and MISA shines in everything she plays. Want to hear something special from her? Listen to "Sayonakidori" Acoustic Version on their channel. Tell me she's not playing lead. (Sayonakidori is more of a ballad)
No need to reverse the images for BandMaid. It makes it all look so wrong. They don't block if you take the clips from their own official channels. you need to listen to many more tracks before you try to put them in a pigeon hole. They play so many Genres. Even in the same song. Take a look at the double live offering of "Manners/Black Hole". Both those songs belong to the Bass.
It's a pity they don't promote "I Still Seek Revenge." There are two live recordings available, from the 2021 Day of Maid OKYUJI, and from Tokyo Garden Theater. But I would love to see an MV for this song, featuring Ass-Chin who still seeks revenge. The song is a bass-slapping masterpiece.
This song is definitely catered to anime audience. You'd have to listen to at least 10 different songs to form any judgement. I personally think they are the unique and different band who keeps challenging me, while many other Japanese bands have sort of similar sound. I'm not a big fan of their anime op/ep songs, though

The biggest mistake you can make is try and pigeon hole this band into a genre....Their genre id Gand Maid !!!!! with over 120 songs... they play everything. And play it really well. Best rock band on the planet. And having a double bass pedal does not make it metal.
Agree. In fact I once tried to find out who invented the double bass pedal for drums. It's disputed but it was definitely a thing in 1700's classical music 😊
I saw Band-Maid 3 times last year, they are the most amazing thing I've come across in 30 years. For me rock/metal whatever you want to call it was 100% absolutely dead I hated it! And in a way I still do angry boys only make me more angry, and I'm sick of how everything is about religion or mythology or sounds like opera. ITS NOT FUN ANYMORE
Well... I'm learning Dutch now, and I asked my colleagues if they could create a playlist for me with the songs in Dutch. The very first one has instantly become my favourite... and it's about religion... well, sort of. I'm talking about Vulgaris Magistralis by Heidevolk. Well, I don't know if that's about religion, to be honest, maybe a pagan folk cult, at least. The guy rides around on Mammoth, and on Sundays, on a Mastodon. And it's REAL FUN 😂
Nemophilla is a very respectable band and very professional in their performance. Personally I prefer BAND MAID but it is just a preference but I would not hesitate to attend one of their concerts since I know they will give everything for me and the audience. Lovebites ?... the same feeling, Hanabie ?... the same feeling, etc.
Thank you for your feedback! Part of figuring out what works and what doesn't on this channel is experimenting and this is what I've been doing lately. Remember, making reaction videos is a tricky thing as, one never knows what to expect from the Content ID system, audio for sure will be ID'd, Video on the other hand may or may not be a problem, that's why I decided to test with these videos if flipping the video would do anything, surprisingly it didn't! Rest assured I won't try this trick again and also will make sure that video is a decent size along with me reacting to it, make sure you are subscribed for more of this type of content! I've got another video coming that is in the works right now.
Thanks!
Lovely comment! thank you so much!

You can see her doing this pick flip already in 2018 in "onset."
MISA can play all styles, but she rarely does tapping.
Band-Maid are one of the few bands where you can legitimately say they have a lead bassist as well as lead guitarist. Whole band is fire.
And lead drums 🥰🦍🔥🦍🔥🦍🔥🦍🔥
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!
Band-Maid is fantastic in every way. Great musicians and song writers. Check out more songs, you won't regret! Thanks for the reaction.
Also, Miku was wearing a Batman T-shirt, with the inscription Ba-To-Man, which is very close to her name Ko-Ba-To. Obviously, the pun was intended.

I was at that ATL show. Flew the family up from Orlando for it. Great sold out show in Buckhead. 👍
WORLD DOMINATION!!...With The Power Of PO!!!!🕊.....Long May They Reign!👑

Welcome to the BM rabbit hole; it only gets better from here:

Thank you both for reaction, considering your instrument bias try "FROM NOW ON" OMV or "HATE" live at Lollapalooza 2023
Love this group
Welcome to *Band Maid* !
So much to explore, and as others have mentioned in the chat..
Don't try to figure out their genre, they *are* the genre 😁
🤘😀🤘

I really need to pay attention to their concerts, I won't miss them next time! Thank you for your comment
"Shambles" ends on an air intake 😂
Check out their song Influencer, bad ass base solo
Their bassist is one of their beast,
Enjoyed your reaction. You all put a lot of thought into it. From Now On is an instrumental. But has a fantastic melody. Lot of their songs are very catchy. Domination Live has a chorus that will get stuck in your head.
Don't try to assign genres, just enjoy the awesomeness of Band-Maid! The more you watch/listen, the more you'll realize just how great this band is.
Shambles is the ending theme song for an anime, season 2 of Kengan Ashura.
thank you!
"Shambles" is the ending theme for the second season of the Japanese anime series Kengan Ashura. The lyrics are about the story.
MISA !!! MISA !!! MISA !!! the Barefoot Bass Assassin.

MISA MISA MISA plays lead bass ;) .
Their newer stuff definitely has more of a metal edge, although a lot of people seem to think anything that isn't Metalcore is hard-rock now a days...

Es única en su especie.

BTW, lead singer Saiki is left-handed.
haha thank you for the bit of info!
Agreed. Seeing them all left handed is weird...
It's a pity they don't promote "I Still Seek Revenge." There are two live recordings available, from the 2021 Day of Maid OKYUJI, and from Tokyo Garden Theater. But I would love to see an MV for this song, featuring Ass-Chin who still seeks revenge. The song is a bass-slapping masterpiece.
thank you for sure I won't flip videos anymore, I appreciate your feedback!

This song is definitely catered to anime audience. You'd have to listen to at least 10 different songs to form any judgement. I personally think they are the unique and different band who keeps challenging me, while many other Japanese bands have sort of similar sound.

ua-cam.com/video/q7VqI6yas_o/v-deo.html
they do "positive maid-rock" lol
PS they are even better live ;)
I'll check them out live!
But it is a Pigeonhole, Po! Kruppo! 🕊️
Band Maid much better than Nemophilla or any other Japanese band! By far!
There's no need for such arrogant comments here, putting others down.
Live and let live!
@@UltraHD.7 Yes.
@@UltraHD.7 this is you know who, looks like he is branching out..
The video is backwards and too small. If you want more subs you need to pay attention to details.
