QOTD: What part of painting portraits would you like to see a more in depth video for? Also the tips in this video is targeted to those of you that want to create realistic looking portraits with watercolours. This isn’t the only way to paint faces with watercolours. If you want to paint in a loose, expressive style then different methods and techniques would be best for that 😊
I love your process and your so good at explaining them! Please show techniques where the white of the paper is preserved for the highlights with and without maskit or masking fluid.
Oh the irony : this morning I looked at your videos because I needed those exact tips on how to draw a face but there was nothing new... and now that I've finished my painting, you publish this new amazing video ! Well, I'm glad I tried so now I know what parts I need to work on. Thank you so much for taking all this time to share your knowledge so we can be more satisfied with our own creations !
I think that from all the channels with watercolor tutorials ONLY YOU are going straight to the point and with so many details that i can actually learn watercolors even if it's not my style!!
I'd love even more help in the eyes, as they are the life of any living creature, animal or person. I watch loads of other watercolorists and artists in general and you give so many tips and tricks and "how to's" in your tutorials for free. Usually you have to become a patreon to get the kind of help you give in your regular videos. Now as a patreon of yours, you give even more help and lots longer videos showing step by step how to paint in watercolor, colored pencil, etc. You are so generous in your help and you obviously have a passion for helping teach others! Lucky us! It is so greatly appreciated!!! Another great video! :-D xx
It has been now more than a year than I follow you and I really appreciate what you're doing, you really have this ability to teach other people. You've been the reason why I've improved my realism skills. Thank you for everything and looking forward to your next videos! I can't wait to try realistic portraits with watercolour now
Thank you for making this video. I can rescue the massive mistake on my 4th piece. And now I know what color to use in the 5th piece for the shadows. May put in some ultramarine blue mixed with dioxide purple and a touch of panes gray. Thank you again for making this video. It helped a lot.
I am very impressed that you are using quite a think brush for the hair. It looks so details that I thought this is only possible with a size 0. WOW!!! you are amazing!!!
I spent the day on your Patreon site yesterday---not to paint one of yours this time, but to skip through different paintings of yours to give me answers to problems I was having with my own personal painting. I still check Your UA-cam. This quick hair reference is exactly what I needed today. The sketch outline on Patreon is also totally helpful to me. You still blow my mind. You are everywhere I want to be if that makes any sense.
Omg this was a fantastic video to me. It helped me really understand why i see artists with such a blocky mess after spending so much time layering which was really confusing me while trying to learn gouache portraits. Its because they just kinda suck. You are a fantastic gouache painter to be able t get such a smooth result with so many colors and with only one thick layer?? Wow!! I think u did it right by perfecting skill before learning color mixing perfectly. What a waste of time had u not enjoyed the rest of the process.
I’ve been watching many videos since 2017 (retired) trying to find that “one thing” that’s missing from my life, (I’m still in discovery mode). And although I know watercolor isn’t it, your teaching style drew me in. Your so well spoken and you break it down in such a way that any skill level can understand. I try to keep it to one patreon account at a time and I’m moving you to the top of my list.
This is an absolute gem, Kirsty! Eleven looks gorgeous and I appreciate you sharing this knowledge. Portraits are one of the most difficult things I’ve tried painting! I especially love the section about the skin colour.
I am hoping to afford a Pateron subscription to view more of your extended content. THANKS for continuing to post here on UA-cam and give such superior content for all to enjoy and learn from you!
It was really helpful..... Especially the smooth texture of the skin....i kind of have a little issue of temperature...when I apply the first layer of color, it dries up very quickly... So, do you suggest that I should do these portraits in a room with high temperature... Or if you have some solutions, please mention it..... By the way, I just love your contents, they've been very helpful for me. Big fan. 😊👋
You are so talented...🔆❤️ It's hard to gain self-confidence. I'm always worried about choosing materials, starting the drawing, putting the brush on the paper...
Why? Not everything you paint has to be a masterpiece. Play around just with some abstract colours, see how they mix, how the brush feels in your hand. Most importantly: have fun. Maybe you'll discover that you have a whole other painting skill you never imagined. No one ever said artists all have to be photo realistic! And with practice, who knows - we all could be watching your video someday :)
I REALLY needed this tutorial. I had such a hard time finding a good watercolor portrait tutorial. This tutorial is so helpful and I’m really excited to improve my watercolor art
I love Payne's grey so much! I recently finished my first ever portrait, and since I working in black and white I did all in Payne's grey, except for the eyes, where I added a bit of blue for interest. It's far from perfect, but I'm happy with it!
Hi Kirsty, your videos are so informative and concise. Thanks for spreading your knowledge to beginners as well as artists for whom your content is equally beneficial ❤️
Amazing video! And I love the subject too (Hopper is life!)! I'm just getting into watercolors after a long hiatus from any artistic pursuits, and I've watched a few of your videos now and am feeling inspired and learning some great tips. Thanks so much XX
I really love the watercolor medium but I am still trying to learn the techniques of loose painting cause that's where I fail most of the part so still experimenting and your video helps a lot.
Oh great!!! Hope hou will do a real realistic one with watercolor like the baby you did with the luminance. Ore a combination of it. The watercoller as underpainting....hope you will do this ones....please please 🤗😘👍🏼 Greatings from the Netherlands😘
Thank you for your informative video as always keep coming and I am waiting for your more videos. And also sending positive vibes to you and Darby also.
Please make a video about what color will pop out when you are glazing color to make a portrait because i use prismacolor and i use dark umber and light umber and when i burnish it with light peach the light and dark umber don't mix with light the result is just like dirty look so please make a video that what color mixed together please 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this. You are awesome. Right now im still learning shading and tones in pencil. If you a video like this one but in pencil please let me know. Thanks again!
He showed the method of water color in a very beautiful way. The art is so beautiful because you are there. Well, I do not use a brush to make water color with the fingers of the hand, there is no problem ??
This is really a terrific video! I am so drilled to use the lightest colors first, I never thought to layer the dark under the light to create the shadows. I will definitely try this! Is purple the only color you use underneath as the shadow? The gouache tips at the end really helped too.
Not if the previous layer is completely dry. And when I wet the paper again I try to gently add the water without pressing to firmly on the paper, that way you won’t reactivate the paint 😊
@@yve4396 i started drawing in 2012, took a class on it, and practiced every day. by 2013 i was a million times better. i got people paying me to do commissions, but im still learning new things every day and practice new things a few times a week.
I was wondering, when you're going to add the wash to your painting, do you use water to wet the surface of the painting first before you add the wash? Or does the wash come in naturally without that technique?
I actually had better luck adding white to my skin tone than adding water, strange. I hear that white would dull the colors, but that was never the case for me, so it probably is dependent on techniques too. I’ll try again with the water though! Thanks for sharing

I love all the watercolors you do. This is super exciting though because it’s something new your doing. Can’t wait to watch the whole thing
Can you make a video using cheap watercolor supplies? Cheap materials that can really work well with this medium.
I love your process and your so good at explaining them! Please show techniques where the white of the paper is preserved for the highlights with and without maskit or masking fluid.

Question: How do you make the paper wet again, as you say at 03:10
Wouldn't the colours reactivate and smudge all over the paper?
Not if the previous layer is completely dry. And when I wet the paper again I try to gently add the water without pressing to firmly on the paper, that way you won’t reactivate the paint 😊
Mijuki using a soft brush is key.
@@KirstyPartridgeArt Ahh okay, thank you for your answer, i'll definitely try it out :)
the paper plays a great role..if she used a cheap non.cotton paper, it would lift off
mary aihnel dela gente Not just non cotton, some cotton papers also lift off easily due to sizing structure.
This is so amazing and beautiful! Love your videos they leave me inspired! Great work! ❤
Thank you so much Kirsty 😍 I always struggle with watercolours 💖
So good! Thanks for sharing.
