I like to imagine that people that do "do's and don't" videos are internally screaming when doing the "don't" versions.
Lmao
I am screaming
They probably are 😂
@@ek9607 same idk y
Their "Don't do" versions are our "Always" versions ):
Her bad cupcake still looks way better than anything I can do. 😂
mine too.
Same
Xactly 😂😂😂
Agree 🤣
If you wanted to you could! Or even better because it would be of something you thought of. You just have to practice a lot!
These truly are the most common beginner mistakes. Especially if you haven't done any kind of art before and you just start with color pencils.
Very basic begginer's though
@@torugho
everyone needs to start somewhere. And, even experienced artists learn new things all the time.
I just messed up my drawing because i have no idea how to use colored pencils, for now at least lol
So true. I badmouthed cheap colored and watercolor pencils not knowing that I burnished the pigments. Later I realized my user mistake from charcoal drawing. If I sketch using light touch and then gradually build intensity where it is needed, it should also apply to colored pencils.
Yeah pretty basic
Okay, so:
*Don't:
Don't put too much pressure on the pencil
Don't do a dark sketch
Don't shade everywhere
Don't limit your colors
NEVER shade with black, use brown or one color darker that your base color.
*Do:
Preserve the light spots
Avoid (dark) outlights
Softer transition
Use a grand scheme of colors
Think of the contrast on your transitions
(If you are using watercolor pencils, ) Try to blend a bit
Sharp your pencils regularly
Use a reference and compare to it
Woow, that take a looot of time lol
Some might be missing (and maybe already have a comment like this)
Just wanted to clarify a bit, i dont think she's using watercolor pencils, she's just using solvent which breaks down the pencil and helps it to blend together
Oh, thank you :D
Thanks for this
you saved me time for a late assignment, thanks pal
@@kerryn1207 Lmao in the same situation rn
is it hard to go out of control for the DON'T drawing?
Yes very 😂 I’m going against all of my natural instincts!
Haha
😄
My biggest mistake accidentally grabbing the wrong coloured pencil and not realising it until I start colour with it I have a few drawings where there is just random colour spots luckily I draw amimal so I just make it look like a dogs spot or something like that
The pain
Oh yeah the pain! I can thankfully use Ctrl-Z but sometimes when I use my coloured pencils and make a mistake I die internally.
That happened to me once with my markers, I was so disappointed in myself🤦♀️
You can fix that doing a colour pallette. Every time I buy new colour pencils the first thing I do is copy the name and colour a little box to show the pigment
Same
Me: *realizing that she uses Prismacolor*
.... 💸💸💸
except for the one black crayola pencil lol
Prismacolor isn’t that expensive
so true.. the prismacolor in my country would be in 3 digits price :')
In my country, it costs around a thousand or less 🙃
It is about rupees 16000 or above very expensive.in online
The “don’t” doesn’t even look that bad.
agree with you.
Owl Leep It is if you’re going for convincing. She does mention that unless you are PURPOSEFULLY going for a more stylized or cartoony style, then sharp shadows and highlights are not bad. It’s only when you’re trying to make an object look convincing that the effect looks flat and looks amateurish. If this is not what you’re looking for, then her tips are immensely helpful for someone who wants to try their hand at something more refined.
I would totally eat that don't.
Owl Leep it is when your doing realism
This video is for people who want to draw realistic and I agree it's not bad but not is it realistic looking
1. Don't use a lot of pressure when shading and try to keep it neat and consistent by drawing lightly. 0:31
1a. Hold pencil further away to draw lighter and draw in circular motions. 1:48
2. Have a light sketch before starting 1:18
3. Keep color transitions soft by lightening pressure when blending two colors. 2:20
4. Try not to outline the drawing with dark lines 3:00
5. Go in with shadows first, and apply lighter pressure where you want shadows to fade away into midtones or highlights. 3:50
6. Preserve highlights by leaving brightest areas free of color pencil and go back and shade those in with white. 4:30
7. Aim for contrast in values and hue by using the whole value scale, and use a lot of different hues to add more saturation. Try to make sure there are strong highlights and shadows. 5:40
7a. Turn drawing and reference into black and white by taking a photo and editing it to check your values. 8:10
8. In place of black, darken up colors by using a darker version of the color you're already using or try other dark colors like browns. 8:45
9. Blend out colored pencil with solvents, such as Zest-It or nail-polish remover, and a Q-tip or brush 10:08.
10. Keep your pencils sharp when using them. 11:00
11. Build up your color in layers and compare the contrast of your drawing to the reference. Exaggerate the highlights and shadows more. 12:01
12. Go over the entire drawing again, even areas you think you finished and add more shading. 13:25
Thank You for the time stamps 😊
Thank you so much!😊
To darken naturally, use the complimentary color. (opposite color on the color wheel, Blue/orange, ect.)
Very useful
100th like 💯
That does darken the color but also desaturates it a bit
@@unhingedfrogspawn6715 yes, its natural color change
When we didn't learn basics
1. This is super useful, some great advice! I've probably made every single mistake under the Don'ts, but that just means I can only improve!
2. Dangit, now I want a cupcake.
But the thing is people that are beginners don’t have lots of shades of pencils because they don’t want to waste money unless they want to commit to it
To me it's like photography.. keep adding layers (filters in photog) until you get the desired affect
Faber Castel are good colored pencils, a pack of 36 is around 8-10$ on Amazon - and that’s a lot of colors for shading!
*Damn.*
I agree
@#MintyJeanne ok lemme get my car to make art-
This made me color more better because back then ,before I watched this video, my coloring was awful but now it’s getting better because now I learned how to color better

Sooooo helpful. Going to be getting prismacolours soon and I can’t wait to do stuff like this.
you really don't need a 150 piece set to start out, but you do need 50 or 75 piece set. They aren't cheap penciled but I love them because they blend well.
Ellen Hofer I knowwww. Thanks for the advice though
@@keane2620 ..Derwent makes amazing stuff also....Watercolor,Inktense,Colorsoft,Metallic,studio, etc...and theyre all super compatible......i also hear great things about the Faber Castel Polychromos, but i believe theyre oil based.... but the led doesnt seem to break as easy......

that is the beauty of art. ones person's wrong is anther's art.
I am a pencil colourist and this is one of the best clear and well explained way to layer and colour with pencils..I wish I had of seen this when I first started but I learnt by trial and error lol..great work and I will in future recommend people watch your video 😀
Where can I see your works??
Me: ugh so many fiddly little bits!
Also me: *paints the same subtle miniature brush stroke four times to layer a ceramic glaze color*
Conclusion: Art is mad. Do you ever find yourself stressed out by the time sink of very fine precision work? When I was younger I used to enjoy it, but I started doing freelance and art school for a bit and began to feel huge time = money pressure that now haunts all of my pieces and degrades my patience.... The gestural work I've been strengthening is good, but I miss feeling comfortable sinking hours and days into a drawing or painting.
Some things should just stay hobbies, or the joy of that activity will be replaced with stress- I hope you find some happiness in your work 😊 💖💖💖💜
great work Kirsty!
Thanks 💕
Kirsty what eraser do you use and also is it hard to do the donuts when your like no that’s wrong!!
I've been approaching it all wrong out of impatience. but... the SOLVENT and brush! so that's (part of) the secret to how I've seen magically smooth color pencil drawings.
I don't think that's a drawing, I think that's a real cupcake, my mouth is watering just looking at it.

Kirsty, Can u make a tutorial on how to make the outlines for a portrait. Like drawing from a reference photo.. how to get the proportions right?

The solvent, wow, I didn't know that existed or was a thing with pencil drawing, thank you. (i'm a sculptor pls forgive my ignorance)
Wow.. Kirsty, please make more about colored pencil tutorial.. shadow is still my big issue.. I know the principle, but when it comes to apply it, it seems off and confusing lol
make some small shapes on paper & practice shading
Right like watching it I know exactly what do do but when I do it I get lost
This is the best colored pencil tutorial I've come across. Very easy to understand and I appreciate how you show us how to shade more realistically. Even though I'm more of an anime style artist, I feel like I could use a lot of these tips to improve my coloring. Thank you so much and that cupcake illustration is just so beautiful.
The don't just looks like you're incapable of being bad at stuff
I've been doing the don'ts for all these years! 😂
This video will truly help me. Thank you!
This was one of the best tutorials I have ever seen. So informative and comprehensive without any chitter chatter. Just the important information to get to the heart of this medium. I appreciate that.
Sometjing i recently started doing was drawing with graphite pencils, basically grayscale version of colour and its a great way for me to practice the small details and shadows/light.
Thank you so, so much. My mom bought me prismacolors and I’m trying to draw with them for the first time and I didn’t want to waste them. This helped so much
if you can get through the whole pencil in a lifetime then you are a pro artist..."waste them"
Thank you, thank you, thank you! 💞 Now I know where are my mistakes. Thank you for this amazing lesson. Please, keep upload your info about drawing tips and tricks. I appreciate that, much! 😍
damn that blending is so smoooooth
there us a blending pencil in the pencil set. It looks like a white pencil.
@@ellenhofer3343 i know i bought 3 blender pencils from differents companies including prismacolor but this isnt workign that well like in the video. maybe i am doing something wrong :(
I'm new to pencil sketching and color pencils. I'm sort of soaking in all these tips. That finished cupcake looked amazing and we can really see how these tips can up our art to new levels. Now i'm craving a cupcake because that thing looked so real.
The issue that I have is that I never know *where* to put the highlights and shadows 😔
use a reference picture :)
Think of where the light is.Imagine places where there will most likely be a shadow.
I find it helpful to put an arrow showing where the light would shine and it helps me think where a shadow wouldn't be.
The best way to study highlights and shadows is take a cube or a ball put it under your flashlight and see which part of your object is the light hitting and study it then draw. Will be a lot clearer
You should try using tracing paper
this was very useful because i do anime drawings so its not really realistic but when i apply these techniques it makes my drawing so much better
Thank you for uploading this! I usually work with charcoal/graphite pencils or paint with oils. So when I tried out colored pencils, I knew I had to look up some tutorials.
When you brushed that eyeball it freaked me out a bit because it looked so real
Hi, your cupcake looks great. I was just wondering why you use Bristol smooth paper. I thought you were supposed to use a paper that has a tooth to it for coloured pencils? Thanks
Did she wet the brush and q tip with something?
I have learned so many of my mistakes. I tried the do's and it came out so good. Thankyou so much. Sending loads of love from INDIA💜😍

I was literally planning to do a color pencil portrait just before the vid was posted. Thank you!
Great video! By the way, am I the only one who is wondering why does this cherry 🍒 has a red stem, instead of green? 😂
Marisha looks like a maraschino preserved cherry, I think they preserve them in liquor. I often see them on cakes
Well I have just started realism recently but your tip helped me improve a lot. You are amazing 😘

I try to keep my color pencils sharp but everyone I try drawing details realistically it looks grainy😭 I’m not sure if my paper has too much tooth or what but I’m probably doing everything wrong lol
I share the same problem.
You are amazing, your dos and don'ts for sketching animal fur helped me a lot!
Hi! Thank you for this video. I have a question....you mentioned to stay away from black and from outlining, however it appears that you do use black and outline for the final layer of the ribbon in the "Do" example. How do you determine when to do this and when not to?
maybe i can help?, she is not "outlining" the ribbon, she is adding shadow behind the ribbon, if their is a ribbed surface, with a ribbon going around it, the ribbon will not lay flat across the surface creating small shadows behind the ribbon especially between the ribs...so she is adding that in.......hope that helped..peace!
@@danrecore6726 Yes that did. Thanks so much for replying!

What watercolor brand do u recommend by beginners 😋😊
Anybody else have problems keeping control of the pencil when you put your fingers further away from the pointed end?

This video helped me alot. I feel like i've improved on my art a bit over the years but I wanna improve even more. I do tend to do some things on the don’t list. I wanna study art just I do when I study subjects for school. I'm writing all of this down so i can remember all of this thank you! :) Learning art tips from youtubers is fun. I'm sure this will help others who wanna improve & feel stuck.

(edit0) ehhmmm eerhhhhhmmmm ( heavy coughing )you got the colours wrong.
My art teacher told me to use blacks to darken, and even I knew that was wrong because you rarely ever need to shade with black!
Yeah... I can't rlly do realisim 😓 It always turns out cartoony so I just gave up on it.... 😫
I thought so too, until I was forced to draw realistically for a course. I believe you can do it! It just takes a lot of patience... my first realistic graphite drawing took me like over 10 hours, but I was so proud.
Every time I rushed an outline or shading or coloring, I was disappointed with the end result. Still haven't gotten the hang of color pencils, but I was doing the wrong things shown in this video because I was rushing.
It made me realize that anyone can do it, but you need to be really patient with every step.
Do cartoony stuff then it probably still looks nice
@@midairbirdy
I'm not even patient enough to watch this video, lol.
it more depends where the pressure you need to use, not always you will play with same light pressure XD
but, it is better to use light pressure and build it up than to press harder from the start. The color will be more even.
This video was amazing! I use colour pencils a lot, and I'd really look forward to seeing more videos exploring them :))
What do i do if all i can find is either the 24 colored pencils or 12 colored pencils? Plus i want to star working on water colors though i dont know how to use the water color paste..any advice?

congrats kirsty, this video is used by my art teacher to teach us, it a school video now

That is only valid if you're doing realistic colored pencils, which makes the title misleading
There is no problem in doing that when going for a stylized illustration
I think she mentioned it multiple times in this video.
These tips are if you want your drawing to look more realistic UwU
The thing I have most trouble with when it comes to colored pencils is coloring in large areas without it looking streaky.
dont press hard use layers
I kind of like the way the don't side looks its more my style because I can't draw things super realistic👍 but great video Kristy you are the best artist!!!
