A T it was very sad that Lou Costello died just 5 years after this comedy routine was recorded. He died very young, aged just 52. Bud Abbott fared a bit better, dying in 1974 aged around 76. Bud was born in the 19th century, and would never have reached the UA-cam era, even if he'd have lived to 100 years old. Lou, might have just been able to record a UA-cam video if he'd have lived to 100 years old, dying in 2006.
great to see young people discovering the old classics. One of my favorite bits is by Tim Conway, on the Carol Burnett show. It's called the elephant skit. Back in that show which was aired live. The actors would try their best to make the other actors laugh or forget their lines. In the Tim Conway dentist skit he actually made his partner, Harvey Corman pee his pants on live TV. You may recognize the name Tim Conway from a more recent portal of a character "Dorf". He did a pretty funny bit called Dorf on basketball. All his stuff was good but the elephant skit is the best. In my humble opinion. It is also the first time the word asshole was ever said on live TV. Please keep up the good work. It is because of young people like yourselves that classic comedy will last forever. Peace and much love.
Tim Conway's antics were seen "live" by the studio audience, but it was being captured on film, which was only broadcast at a later date edited to leave out anything as raunchy as "asshole" or any visible sign of Harvey peeing himself. It was only years later that the viewing public saw the unedited comment by Vicky.
The Golfer and The Dance Lesson from The Honeymooners would be good. The best is when Ralph and Norton are on the train going to the convention. THAT routine is PRICELESS!
I have a vast collection of music. I've seen a lot of the classic TV shows and movies. That said, "Whitesploitation" (I sincerely hope that term doesn't catch on), would be dark skinned folks wearing obvious, white, facial makeup and going through exaggerated "white" gestures. Hmm. Nothing comes to mind. When a white guy appreciates Delta blues, but performs it in his own style, we get something new; that can be a good thing. Ironically, I hear a lot of 20 something black kids hearing 70's rock for the first time, and pausing through the guitar solos to appreciate and say things like, "That sounds like...blues? Let me know in the comments!", and I think, "Wow. 1960's white kids like black music, by the 70's they're in bands playing it with volume and overdrive along with big drums, hip hop catches on in early 80's, thrives in 90's, and becomes the only "go to" music for most of a generation. And now? Black kids hear black music, and don't recognize it." Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT encouraging pride in a culture's contributions; no one can ride on the coat tails of their ancestors. You're assessed on what YOU do, YOU believe, YOU show towards other people EVERY day. However, it's good to know accurate history. Blaxploitation takes behaviour to the point of exaggeration and turns the characters into buffoons. In other words, we're laughing at clowns, but the clowns won't perform as themselves; they'll leave the latent image of another culture in your mind; THAT'S what you'll remember the next day while walking through town. That's not going to help folks get along, is it? Not really. When I hear Al Jolson sing "Swanee", I love it. When I SEE him, I feel sorry for his (and a whole lot of other people's) ignorance. When I read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or "Uncle Remus" I'm super glad someone took the time to phoneticize the local, black talk of the time. It's a legitimate language like any other. There is no "proper" English; all variations, if understood and repeatable, are legitimate languages (that's how languages evolve). If I'm reading those phrases out loud, I do it the way they would have spoken back then. But I do it with respect. I put myself within the character as a human being. Not a clown. That's the difference between Black Appreciation and Blaxploitation. Peace.
One of my favorite jokes wasn't in this version of 13 Into 28. Abbott: "Didn't you go to school, stupid?" Costello: "Yeah, and I came out the same way."
These guys are comedy legends. Try some Laurel and Hardy. They started in silent movies, two very funny guys. That math one in the first bit got a lot of kids in trouble with their teachers.
I grew up watching old Hollywood films and Abbott & Costello was one of many comedic teams I watched. I remember watching the 7x13=28 sketch from the movie "In The Navy". Classics.
I grew up watching and listening to these dudes on the radio (though I'm only early 30's) so it makes me happy seeing other folk around my age getting into them.
I love seeing the reaction on both of you with all of these classic Abbott & Costello routines. It makes me remember when I first watched them on TV over 50 yrs ago.
Loafing and kneading the dough in order to make bread is still done today in most bakeries. When ever we order pizza. The pizza maker gets a ball of dough, and starts to knead it till it becomes flat and round. When making bread the loafer must first knead the dough by punching, squeezing and shaping it before putting it into the oven. Abbot and Costello were able to make a great skit out of the process of making a loaf of bread. Classic!
I stumbled upon this video of you watching one of my favorite routines by Abbott & Costello 28 Dollars. Funniest thing ever. The pair of them made 15 full-length films together. And some of the routines you have seen are in these movies. The movies are out there to be watched on DVD. Lou Costello the short round one died in 1959 & Bud Abbott the tall skinny straight man of the team died in 1974. I am glad you have found this comedy gem of a team.
I love your reaction to these skits. And I appreciate your interest in the classics of humor/ comedy. I was fortunate to have grown up in a time when these guys were televised quite often, as well as many others. These types of entertainers were the best in their day. We also had the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Phil Silvers, and many more. I sincerely hope that you keep looking into comedy's past. It's a fun place to go.
I grew up watching Abbott and Costello. It's so much fun watching the two of you see them for the first time! I also watched you both when you were checking out Who's On 1st. Hilarious!!🤣
They were great comics. Sadly they are both gone. They had some good movies. You should watch Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein very classic. They were a great comedy team. Glad yous put that out there because generations today don't know much about the comedy teams back then. Thank you again.
I'm new to your channel and I absolutely love your reactions to Abbot and Costello. It actually drove me to start watching the original Twilight Zone series! They really don't make shows like these anymore.
The Twilight Zone is, in my opinion, of the best written shows of all time. Rod Serling was an absolute beast when it came to ingenuity, originality and storytelling. He could really make you think or go, "OH CRAP!" Great show.
I grew up in St. Louis in the1970s. We had GREAT Saturday morning cartoons and then after noon. We would have Abbott and Costello movies followed by The Bowery Boys movies. Check out the Bowery Boys movies.
