I fell in love with camellias on a tour through Magnolia Planation ~30 years ago. I found one at a local garden center, hardy to my z6b, many years ago. Twice in all these years, I have all but lost it to winter cold; luckily it has come back from the roots or resprouted very low on the trunk as it did this year after the Polar Vortex of Dec 2022, thanks to the leaves I piled around it. When Mother Nature cooperates, it produces the most gorgeous pink semi-double blooms. Through the years, however, more buds have been frozen (27 froze one year) than have actually blessed me with their stunning beauty. But I wouldn’t remove it for any reason! I just cross my fingers and hope that next year will be a banner year.

Oh my goodness Griffin is too cute! Great video. I'm in southern Calif. zone 10b and we have 4 large very old Camellia bushes. I think they're all Japonicas BUT, one is in bloom right now. It has just started flowering but it's loaded w/ buds and stands a majestic 6ft tall. Our temps were mild this summer/fall so maybe that's why it started blooming. Our soil is acidic (5.5) and we don't fertilize them, although I may give them some regular fertilizer this year: thanks for the tip!

    Jim,
I got 2 Japonica’s called “Kramer” zone 8A/B put them in a pot on the north side of the house to see how they do this first season and then I will plant them and get them tree formed. So excited!
I am also trying the Pink Shi Shi (Sasanqua) in the East Garden closer to the house also in a pot to see how it does (has not bloomed but budded up for sure). Waiting until Spring to plant all in ground.
BTW - Griffin is a beautiful soul (carefree) … thanks for sharing the family with us.

I've been clearing the tree line around my property (92 acres) of undergrowth and vines . Last winter I discovered a setsugekka tree in bloom! I've cut firewood all around it for years, but never noticed it before. It has to be close to 100 years old. It's across the road from the huge crepe myrtle planted in 1921. Years ago there was a buggy barn that stood near the camellia. What old bricks I haven't used for projects are still piled there. I'm testing my luck for propegating from cuttings!

Camillas bloom when temperatures can be pretty chilly, often when the bees have gone dormant. What pollinates them?

My poor Alabama Beauty Camellia is trying to recover from the artic blast of December 2022. That plant and my Marvel Mahonia lost every leaf they had. The mahonia took a while, but it's looking pretty good. The Camellia has regained about half of its leaves. No flowers this year. My Oakland Holly lost all of its leaves too, which really, really surprised me. It looks like it's totally recovered now. Arctic blast in December and then no rain from Aug until now.

Love Griffin lol Seeing Holly play with him reminds me of my late pup Cooper playing with her younger brothers.
I'm in zone 10a Florida and have experimented with some camellias since our issue is the intensity of the sun here. My late grandmother lived near-ish by, and she had a japonica camellia in full afternoon sun. So it can be done with the right conditions, as you said. My mom also lives nearby and has some too. I think japonicas might tend to do better than sasanquas in coastal areas. Maybe the bigger, thick leaves allow the plant to endure our saltier air.
For fellow high zone folks in the southeast, April Dawn (a narrow, quicker growing japonica with white, pink, or white and pink flowers) is so far the one I've had success with planting it in morning sun and light shade after that. It hasn't bloomed yet because I planted it in 2021 when it had buds (it dropped them after that), and the following summer was so dry and I barely watered it that it didn't put any on last year. It has some now and has doubled in size, so I'm excited to see it bloom! The dry summer knocked out some of the other camellias I was hoping would do well (magic orchid and magic ruby), but I put them in a touch area of the garden.

My camellia wish list was all fragrant varieties. But since we are near the northern limit here in the VA Blue Ridge, it was a short list! Thankfully (?) we just went a half zone warmer, to 7a. I’m still cautious but am likely to try camellias very soon. The varieties featured here mean I can use some in beds around the house-with the tall fragrant ones just beyond.

Experiencing the worst severe drought and heat wave 1:25 on historical record here in La. I HAD nearly all of them (a dozen or so) to die even though they were somewhat sheltered and watered by hand appropriately. I have taken note what survived and what didn’t to plant more of those. I won’t be replanting camellias sadly even though I love them almost as much as Jim does! 😢climate change has decimated my gardening world zone 8b.
