Jon-Erik Hexum - 1984 News Coverage

  • I found this on an old disc which I bought before I became a member of the fanclub. It consists of parts of the news coverage following Jon-Erik Hexum's accidental shooting, his time in coma and his death.
    It's not real HD, of course, since this has been taped from TV by fans in 1984 . The exact circumstances of his accident have never been fully uncovered, so any speculations of the journalists here remain speculations, even today.
    Side Note: Nick Clooney (the anchorman with the white hair at the beginning) is George Clooney's dad.

    I know I'm not alone when I say I fell in love with this man the first time I saw him on tv. To me, he is absolutely the most beautiful man I've ever seen! I don't remember ever reading or hearing one negative thing about him in the short time he was here. And what better testament to his character than his decision (honored by his mother) to donate his organs when he died. A beautiful human being, in every way!

As a child I still remember these scenes and after so many long years, particularly in year 2015 when I was searching for serials from the 80s like Manimal, Automan, Highway man, and stuff, I ended up into Cover up where after watching the opening theme and feeling very nostslgic about it, I soon found a link of Hexum's accidental death during the shooting of cover up episode..... I felt and still feel very very sad about it. He was such a handsome Gentleman, a rising star of that era.... Ahhhhh... Its all gone. • @katemaloney4296
      @katemaloney4296 3 роки тому +10

      Not even close to the same situation. I will try to explain in simple terms. Jon-Erik was the result of a huge wad of bunting that was compacted to fit inside the cartridge that had some gunpowder to give it that OOOMPH! on-screen during gunfights. From several feet away there is little to no damage to a person if they are hit. However, that wad being shot from a .44 magnum, with a literal barrel to skin contact was enough to push fragments of Jon's skull into his brain. Jon survived surgery but was brain dead.
      As for Brandon, the props department didn't have any blanks, so some nitwit decided to "manufacture" some. Except he left the tips of the bullets on the "blanks", so when it was shot, it was a real-life bullet that penetrated Brandon's body--and made mincemeat of his internal organs. Brandon died on the OR table.
      Both times the fault was with the prop-masters. See, their job is to inspect and secure the weapons. during the break on the TV show, the prop-master allowed Jon to play with the gun when it was supposed to be secured under lock-n-key when they were filming. And on the movie set the prop-master, instead of getting blanks, decided to cut some corners and "invent" some illegal ones.
      Not close. Not even similar.

      @@katemaloney4296 if I recall, they interviewed the actor who played Fun Boy, he was the 9ne that actually shot Lee. Sad, but youre close to what they explained. There was two mistakes made during two scenes that lead to the accident. The first was dummy bullets with the primers still intact, that was enough to lodge a bullet in the barrel of the gun. The second was a blank being fired in that chamber during a second scene that propelled the bullet the rest of the way out of the barrel. Unbelievable that it could happen but that was the explanation. The actor who played Fun Boy was pretty shook up over it for a long time after the movie was released.

If he can be trusted to handle it while filming he can be trusted to handle it during the break he was a fully grown adult not a child. It’s sad that the show he was filming for was called “Close Up”, And he happened to put a gun that he thought had a blank in it, shooting himself in the head accidentally. Almost the same thing happened with the late guitarist Terry Kath from the band Chicago, He didn’t completely empty the barrel because one bullet happened to be left in the chamber, The one bullet that killed him.

    My sister got me watching Voyagers b/c of him and later on, Cover Up. She was devastated by the news of this...This guy would've been a great great actor in the years to come had this not happened. James Dean was the same way...imagine if Dean were still alive today...what great movies we would have seen from him. Very sad. :(

    Just started watching the series VOYAGERS recently, and had no idea until today that he had died as a result of an accident. He appeared to be quite a talented lead actor and no doubt would of had a long career in the movie industry.

      Yes the fallout with Alec Baldwin being charged with involuntary manslaughter made me watch this one from the 1980's and it's crazy how we are repeating history all because the Directors and producers made a bad decision over a gun scene that lead to an on set death.

    His death doesn't really make much sense, Jon Erik had used guns with blanks before in his previous TV series 'voyagers' - I'm sure he would have been aware of the risk if he fired one into his head - I think that he didn't think that there was any kind of bullet in the gun (he'd just woken up before he shot himself), I don't think he knowingly shot himself with a blank

    • @funguy8801

    • @KaydeyRai
      @KaydeyRai 8 років тому +3

      Fun Guy - Not really, I just don't buy that he knew the gun had blanks in it, I think Jon Erik thought the gun was completely empty when he put it against his head and it should have been - someone really messed up leaving a dangerous loaded gun lying around on set like that, I'm sure even back in '84 safety regulations didn't allow that kind of thing

    • @marcusbarnes6032

    Cover Up had only been on the air barely a month when Hexum had his accident. After his death, he was quickly replaced with Tony Hamilton, who began appearing in mid-to-late Nov. 1984. The show was only on for one season in total, which was the sole fault of CBS, who cut back on promoting the show heavily in early 1985. This resulted in a ratings drop-off come springtime. It was an overnight hit with Hexum, and held onto the high ratings with Hamilton under normal promotional volume. Damn CBS!

    Fun fact Jon -Erik Hexum is 100% Norwegian! With both a Norwegian dad and mom. And a brother named Gunnar. His dad Thorleif was born in Bergen, Norway in 1920 and immigrated to the US in the 1950s, a few years before Jon-Erik was born. Thorleif tragically died in a car accident in San Francisco in 1990 , he was 70 years old.
