Stam Fine Reviews looks at the 1982 series Voyagers! starring Jon-Erik Hexum and Meeno Peluce. This series followed the adventures of a time-agent Phineas Bogg, and his accidental 11 year-old sidekick, Jeffrey.
Voyagers are people who keep history from going wrong. Of course, things go wrong all the time.
I once tried to fix history by trying to bet on sporting events except that I forgot to first travel forward in time to get the results.

I never missed an episode either! It was one of the few non-police shows I enjoyed as a kid! So wish it had been longer than two seasons! The full year it aired (mid-Fall 1982 - Summer 1983) spanned fifth grade for me! The first season ended right after I had turned 11 (January '83)

In my head cannon, Phineas Bogg is Jeffrey Jones all grown up, and him taking his younger self on adventures is him training himself into becoming a Voyager

Interesting but not quite. Bogg himself mentioned he was originally from the 17th century - he mentioned he knew many pirates and served on a vessel (and how he got the regular clothes he wore).

I watched this when it first aired. I loved this show so much I own an all brass replica of the Omni and the complete series on DVD. Hexum was awesome and Meeno was really good. It's a shame we never got more but I'm glad we got it at all.

@@Fast_Eddy_Magic There was guy on the Replica Prop Forum that made them in cast brass. it was tad bigger and heavier than the original, but he said for years he wanted to redesign and build it agin with newer techniques to make it smaller and more accurate and lighter. I don't know if he ever did though. Good prop maker though. I have an all metal book replica from that guy from the movie Enemy Mine.

Seeing the other comments, I wasn’t the only kid that loved this show when it came out.. I thought the Omni was the coolest looking gadget on TV. Was disappointed when it stopped airing.
The kid was relatable and Phineas sort of dressed like Han Solo.

I also loved this show and it was my favorite when it aired. It seemed very real as well because I was the same age as the main character Jeffery Jones / Meeno Peluce.
It also seemed so real because my great-grandfather also met and was greatly influenced by Samuel Gompers on one of his visits to St. Louis. I also grew up surrounded by my family's history, photographs and history. I could not wait each week till Sunday for the next episode! And I often took a trip just down the street my local library because "Its all in books!"

Time Tunnel (1966-67) was and is so loved by me that most other time travel themed TV shows (like Voyagers) come over as second best. On top of that, in the early 80s I was too busy watching that snot nosed witch Joan Collins in Dynasty (1981-89).

I loved this show as a kid, watching it when it first aired. I would have loved for there to have been a second season delving deeper into the Voyager lore. Jon-Erik Hexum was one of my first adolescent crushes and I was completely devastated to hear about his passing. He was incredibly handsome, and by all accounts, an extremely nice person as well. It's too bad that he didn't get to have the long career that he was on track to have.

It was truly a shame because he had tons of talent and promise! He had actually been in the process of working on a new show called Cover Up in which his accidental death from Russian Roulette cost them a full season of episodes and it actually wasn't half bad either (the episodes which did air from 1984 into 1985)! I loved Voyagers and also wish it had gone on longer! The producers had planned on a second year but interference from competing shows reversed the decision! The show spanned my year in fifth grade and didn't miss an episode

I actually enjoyed Voyagers. The chemistry between Hexum and Peluce was classic - not exactly father/son, but they definitely respected the other. The stories are imaginative and don't fall back on too many clichés. Hexum was actually a very good actor and fits in well here. Shame we lost him so soon.
I do think they didn't take advantage of its potential, although it tried to expand its setup near the end of the series, which went nowhere since they canceled the show after one year. Voyagers could have been an American Doctor Who, in which the characters travel in time, fix what went wrong, and face off other kinds of temporal threats. After all, Doctor Who began as an educational kids show with a science fiction twist. There's no reason why Voyagers couldn't have gone on from there. Near the end, they created a character like Doctor Who's The Master, who worked towards defeating Bogg and Jeffery at every step -- and we are left with some historical characters who become aware of Bogg's purpose. That might have led to some interesting stories down the line.
But this was a Scholastic production, and they probably didn't want to go too far away from the show's educational purpose. In short, Voyagers wasn't about to introduce pepperpot monsters screaming "EXTERMINATE!" to get more people to tune in. And in the end, it was defeated by, perhaps ironically, 60 Minutes.

I'm late to the party, but I really enjoyed your Voyagers! Vlog. It was also shared a while back on my FB Group. It's honest and funny. The chemistry of the leads truly carried this show (I love the Starsky and Hutch reference!) The show had high ambitions, but a lot of network interference, among other things, got in the way too, slashing the budget as well and taking away that breakneck pace of traveling through history. The stories also had to be altered because Voyagers! was pummeled over the so-called "violent content." I can't even get started on that one. Thanks for bringing more attention to the show, I've been involved in the fandom for nearly 20 years, and it's great to see its popularity grow since the DVDs were released in 2009. Eventually, I will get my blog back up online, but my main website is still up.

I was the kind of kid that grew up reading the Encyclopedia and atlas's at home so I was the target audience for the show which really was a Saturday morning show that made it to the evening schedule.

Thank you. I had no idea about this show. My favorite time travel show was Sliders. How would you compare these two shows? also, I never saw Quantum Leap so how would you compare these three shows?

Ouch, I heard about that incident involving an actor being killed by a prop gun. I didn't know the name of the actor.

It was never picked up again after the incident. Nor was the boy ever mentioned again either. 2 careers shot dead over a gag. Never been anything like it. Sort of like the man from atlantis series. You tuned in to watch it, and it just wasn't there. Like the back half of series 8 of 2 1/2 men.

I couldn't wait for this show each week. It was like Square Pegs, can't miss TV before that was a thing. Of course the block heads at NBC killed it, and indirectly they killed Bog in real life too - and you don't need an Omni to see that, then they killed Square Pegs too! What came after was two years of dearth on TV, unless you were a Knight Rider fan (meh, it was ok).
I just rewatched the whole show a few months ago, and I liked it better as a kid than a grown up, but only because I now know where they were really playing loose with the history. However, I may have never known the truth about history if it weren't for shows like Voyager to get me to read those books and watch those documentaries.
