The times when Ellie uses her immunity to her advantage are pretty badass. Like breathing spores in the Nora scene and fooling that guy in Santa Barbara.
Spoilers ahead I loved Nora's death the most imo. The way Ellie knows once she throws themselves down there, Nora will die either way. And the way she beats her to get what she wants is perfectly articulated because after she kills her, and shows up at the cinema. You can see how shaken up she is. Since we have been in the dark over the last 5 years, we can only assume the last person she beat like that was in fact David. How broken she felt once Joel pulled her off of him. The fact it shoes how much it fucked her up like it did when she killed David is SUCH good attention to detail. The ending may have sucked, but Nora's death was perfect.
Totally agree! But imo the ending worked very well. I understand the hate towards Abby, but personally I did develope a bond with her over time. Its incredibly hard to explain, but I guess , in the end , there was this cyclical loop of violence throughout the 2 games, Joel killing Abby's dad, which leads to her killing Joel, which leads to Ellie killing all of Abby's friends, which leads to jeeses death and Tommy's maiming. So they've inflicted soooo much damage to each other, physically and mentally. So I like that , as Ellie is drowning Abby in the ocean at the end, she sees that flash of Joel on the porch, and stops drowning Abby. The only way to end the cycle of vengeance is to step out of the loop. I feel that was a very mature way to end this story, and it shows Ellie's growth. That was the most that 19 year old Ellie felt like 14 year old Ellie from the first game. She never liked killing, she did it because she had to.
@@MrAlexkaysyou Exactly, all of this. There's this underlying feeling as you're playing through the game as Ellie that a part of her really doesn't want to be doing this. You can see it in the way she's shaken after Nora. You can see it in the way she hesitates for a second before killing the WLF with the Vita even though she's actively trying to kill her. You see it in the way that by the time Ellie reaches Owen and Mel, she's not even looking to kill them, even though they were at the lodge too; she just wants Abby's location. Everything in Seattle happens so fast, but any time Ellie has a chance to breathe after doing something terrible, you can tell what she's doing is affecting her and she's not far from falling apart. It starts to feel like a ride she doesn't know how to get off of. The game takes on a new light when you consider that part of Ellie's reason for going after Abby and the rest is because she feels obligated to do it for Joel. Like she said before leaving Jackson, if the situation were reversed, Joel would have done it for her. He _did_ do it for her, on two occasions. Considering how frayed their relationship was when Joel died, not going after his killers feels like a disservice to his memory and fills Ellie with more guilt over how she left things with him. It's why she has such a hard time letting go when she's at the farm later. Throughout her quest for justice/revenge you can see Ellie almost emulating Joel; her increasing ruthlessness, the torture of Nora for info, the attempt at the Joel (and Tommy) method of questioning with Mel and Owen. But unlike Joel, who learned to separate himself from his actions in the name of survival and was never too bothered by it, Ellie was never the kind of person who could inflict pain on others in a detached way and not be affected by it. That's why, like you said, letting Abby go is such an important moment for Ellie. She realizes she doesn't have to continue on this path that's caused her nothing but more pain and can honor Joel's memory by letting go of the residual anger she felt towards him over his actions and the guilt she felt over that anger. (I know I just ended up agreeing with what you said, but I kinda just wanted to talk about it with someone who got it. There really aren't many opportunities to talk about Ellie's journey and the ending positively since a lot of people didn't like it.)
There’s this aspect of Ellie’s journey that is just so captivating to me. At the beginning of the game, she acts like a normal teenager. She has a crush, there’s some drama, she sneaks out to go sledding, reads comic books, etc. But after Joel dies, all of that gets pushed to the absolute back of her mind, and she just resigns herself to becoming a hardened, cold, unfeeling killer in order to accomplish her mission. It’s like she can’t allow herself to feel what’s left of her youth. Not anymore.
I love how brutal Ellie is in this game, she’s underestimated because she’s a scrawny teenage girl but little do they know she was adopted and raised by some of the most brutal motherfuckers in the apocalypse, dont fuck with the Miller brothers or the killing machines they create
this game is really very brutal and they didn't even exaggerate, if you look at how pitiless and brutal people can be in parts of the world today, TLOU2 is still harmless
Watching the Ellie scenes again it’s interesting to see smaller moments explained by what happened during Abby’s scenes. Like when the soldier asks why the power was on in the hospital, I didn’t think anything of it first time but now I realise it was bc Abby was down there first
Ellie has to be one of the most loved video game characters of all time. They finally made a normal character that’s also a woman. I love everything about this game.
@@ROCKY-yv4ed did you even play the game because I played it blind and had an amazing time. You just can't get over Joel dying and your letting it poison the story for you.
@@niall798 it's not just about Joel's death, he would have die anyway, but the plot it literally shit, unrealistic and ridiculous. Woman with a man body, stupid motivation for KILLING NPC, player don't care about Abby, her character is empty. And dont forget the cherry on top, pregnant woman doing man's job, yeah that sooo "badass". The graphics are amazing, but plot gives me headache, and If you think this game is good, you have so problems.
One of my favorite details about this game was the fact that after swimming, your journal will look different. It will actually look wet. This game is astronomical with the details
Now, joel is one tough SOAB. Probably more than we the players know for now if ever and same about tommy, but ellie. She lost her first lover, tess, sam and Henry. Survived against infected, hunters. David. At age 14/15.. Then survived many things in the last of us 2 (I'm not mentioning because I dont want to spoil for the people who haven't played yet.) Now joel, he is a survivor. A man who watched his world crumble. His daughter die before his eyes ON HIS BIRTHDAY and lived over 20+ years before he found ellie. The point is. He's a survivor, but ellie. She grew up in the world shes around. As small as she has always been by size and strength. Honestly. Besides joel and maybe tommy. Shes the real survivor of both stories. Even as lucky as she is to be immune.
Elle couldn't take on a full healthy Abby, while Tommy went full terminator mode on her. If it wasn't for Yara, Abby would be dead. Ellie is dangerous, but she simply doesn't compare to Joel and Tommy.
Dean Samuels to me,Tommy and Joel are the ruthless ones with no mercy but Ellie on the other hand...She probably wanted the stop the cycle of violence cause if she killed Abby next thing you know lev is after her.Did I make sense?(Sorry I’m not good at this stuff)
Ellie was standing which would enable her leg muscles and whole body to provide support whereas the Vita girl was sitting in a very disadvantageous position.
That was probably his reward. She shot him once and he died seconds later. A better fate then being left to bleed out or eaten by whatever infected passes you by. Hell his reward was not seeing the full extent of what Ellie can do to someone.
Honestly, I find this Ellie fucking terrifying yet so fucking awesome at the same time. She's able to push herself so far past her limit for the sake of forgiving Joel and its scary.
This game actually made me want to use photo mode, and let me tell ya, the graphics make some pictures look like real pictures or professional screenshots
Love when she pushes the guy into the clicker. It makes sense that her immunity would give her an advantage against other people cus no one's expecting someone to risk getting bit or scratched.
People who don't like Ellie because she changed since the first game just can't understand that she is supposed to be a human. Humans change, humans evolve, humans commit mistakes, and with those mistakes we finally grow up. That's exactly what happened to Ellie, after seeing how the world really is, she became a more realistic person, she became *human* . The Ellie we see in the first game is a little girl, who has no purpose, she just exists, she has no boundaries, she knows nothing about life, she's immature. When Ellie looses Joel, she starts to notice how important he was for her, how she would miss him, and how she should've treated him better, and she felt so angry and sad, that she forgot about the happy moments she had with Joel. She felt empty without him, and she needed to feel something, even if that was anger, and even if that costed people's lives. When she fights Abby at Santa Barbara you can really notice that, she starts to remember the happy moments, and remembers Joel and her had already apologized, that's why she let Abby go, she finally freed herself from that emptiness, and fulfilled it with good memories, she was finally accepting Joel's death, and how revenge wasn't worth it and wasn't gonna bring him back. And that's actually what it means to be human, that's why I love Ellie so much and identify with her, I respect your opinion if you disagree, just try to think about my point. I'm accepting critiques too.
Ellie is an insane survivor, she manages to turn the tide against two armed rattlers, one of which was twice her size by using her environment and quick thinking, all after being hung upside down with a gaping wound in her side. her decision to kill him instead of letting him take her there makes sense of course because how the hell would that pan out when she got there. Also her little smirk after she looks at the bite on her hand, goddamn

I didn’t think this was as bad as people are saying. So many people love it. It’s a journey about emotional progress. Not just violence and victory. That’s not always the ending.
Illquan Benjamin Everything can be made better. That’s how life gets better, we progress in quality. That’s how we live with happiness. I just don’t think people should turn their backs or spit on it because it didn’t live up to their ideal expectations.
Nope, the most satisfying death ever is when you attack Ellie head on as Abby in the theatre fight. Ellie then blows her guts off with a shotgun before redesigning her face. I can't stop watching it
I always loved Ashley Johnson as Ellie in part 1/left behind. I was absolutely blown away by how much more I loved her performance as Ellie for Part 2. I feel bad for her though as I remember how she said she would come home every night being both physically and mentally exhausted after hours of working. I believe she also said how she wouldn't feel like doing anything and would sometimes cry due to how overwhelming it all was. I think it absolutely payed off though, she was hands down the best performance for part 2 imo.
I always see tons of comments praising the VO of joel (i forget his name), like him just breathing in the series adaptation (he played a small role and spoke 1 line) : and fans treated him like a literal GOD. Ellie's VO, not so much. I didnt see this hype about her despite her fully deserving it too. Like how she delivered ellie as a baby in the series, picturing how she gave birth to ellie in the game due to voicing her so well: and one person praised her for doing this in the series (giving actual birth to baby ellie), and someone HAD to s**t on that and say she didnt do anything worth mentioning. Why the double standard....? Ellie's VO proved many times how she deserves recognition.
Seeing how much Ellie has been through the past 2 games is truly incredible. And no matter how people feel about how Joel ruined her chances at helpping make a cure, Ellie loved Joel and vise versa
@@EmilJustinCerio why do people hate abby so much? Her motivation was much more justifiable than ellie's. Is everyone just super salty that you have to play as joels killer?
@@squizaaard Cause we have been attached to Joel and Ellie from a long, long time. And if a fucking hulk with "good reasons" steps in to kill that relationship... what would you expect?
playing the child card is useless and was too late, despite it's morally broken. If one intended to kill someone, expect to be killed. The mother's death is caused by Owen's own reckless action of not complying before anything turns ugly and chose to walk the toughest route. Things would have been smooth if either of them mentioned she has a child to protect and is willingly cooperate in the first place, which was the best timing to play the card. Who would attack a mother carrying her child? Oh wait, there's one already in the game.

I still hated her in the end but only because she bored me for 10 hours. And I knew that going after her wouldn't solve anything for Ellie. But you go after her and don't kill her? If there is a 3rd game I don't want her in it at all. Her whole story is already far too long
@@mrpotatocream9499 I just don't even know how a 3rd game is even possible for Ellie. I mean the whole point of her final choice was to randomly "end the cycle of violence" but if theres a 3rd game then theres obviously...more violence and revenge. Which is beyond stupid at this point
One of my biggest fears coming into this game was that I would end up hating Ellie (who is in my top 5 favorite video game characters of all time) because of her actions, fortunately that didn't happen.
I gotta say. Despite how much hate the game gets and how bad the story may or may not be, Ellie is still my favourite game character and probably one of the most badass ever
@Arne Botha the fact that they killed him so easily is very representative of TLOU's world. i mean youre in a post-apocalpytic world, you can die at any moment, so him dying that way is realistic and expected in that world. i mean what did you all expect? him dying peacefully happily ever after when he made a LOT of ennemies wanting him dead? him dying brutally was the obvious choice for the continuation of the story, he's not invincible and can die as easily as any other character most of the hate this game got is mostly by people who cant accept joel's death. and that means the game worked on them, lol, they feel the same as ellie. the game wanted us to seek revenge for ellie, and most of the players felt that way, whether you hate the game or not. the game also wanted us to hate abby, and playing her was a way to understand that while we can hate her, she's going through the same things as ellie. their stories are similar. with abby's perspective, ellie is a sick psychopath. with ellie's perspective, abby is also a sick psychopath. if you hate abby, well congrats because thats what the developers wanted you to feel so the story worked. you cant convince otherwise lmao + a lot of the other criticism on the game is because of its supposedly "SJW" nature. i don't find that criticism valid IMO, i mean if youre a confident white hetero cis man, why are you mad about minorities being represented? youre that insecure seeing minorities? i mean ellie's been gay since 2013, why are you mad only NOW? where were you before? or are you just following a trend of hating on minorities representation because you literally have no personnality? youre not a chad. youre just an insecure individual incapable of seeing minorities being happy that they're finally recognized. its an issue we can see everywhere now, the tv show ms marvel, while having good reviews, has been review bombed just because its main protagonist is a muslim woman. you have to have a very miserable life to hate on cultural works only on the basis of the sexual orientation, race, origin, skin colour, religion or any other characteristics of a character making them different from the others. (when im saying you, im talking generally, not someone specific) so yeah the game is a masterpiece for me and i've yet to see any constructive negative review not including being mad about joel's death or the representation of minorities. (also lets be serious, even if youre mad about those two, how does the game deserve getting a 0 mark? 💀ive seen people being mad about those two but still praising the graphics and the music and yet they're giving out those 0s?? be serious, people hating only for the sake of it)
I think im obsessed with watching people have the last of us 2 cause Ive watched the last of us 2(on yt since i dont have one yet :') ) for like the whole entire day my history is literally full of it-
The bit where she gets bit on purpose and then turns and just shreds the dudes leg was so well done I felt like it was from an actual zombie show or movie. There are some really great shocking badass moments like that in this game that were for sure not in the first one.
i loved this game when it came out. i’m one of the few i know, but it’s just so gritty and brutal yet beautiful and sad and even a little nostalgic. great game.
The Santa Barbara part if awesome! With the music, Ellie all bloody and injured but still thinking on her feet. Man I wish that part of the game was actually longer
It’s frustrating that Joel died such a easy death. In the first game he was running people over pretending to be hurt and now he helps a random girl and lets himself become completely open to this happening. This seemed like a frustrating death
thats what i hate about this game...NaughtyDog made Joel died in the game, the deaths are just too easy, no fighting back first and they didnt get us the chance to play as Joel in the game 😭
Yeah I get that. But as the years went on with Ellie, Joel was more focused on being a father to her after being broken for 20 years. Living in relative peace for a couple years with a community will do that to you. And.. face it, the death was made to be frustrating on purpose. You're supposed to be royally pissed off to fuel Ellie's vengeance, whilst also being forced to play the other side. Its a mind fuck
Kian I think the story is that Owen always wanted to be with Abby but she was too consumed by revenge to commit. Even though he was with Mel and about to be a father, Abby was the one he always wanted. Aside from that though he’s easily the most moral of the bunch. He’s literally the only reason Ellie and Tommy survived the first encounter.
16:04 and that is why tlou is one of the best stories ever told. The emotions that a scene like this causes are a testament to this work of art, with all it’s flaws, even with abby’s gameplay being one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced in my life, anything that can make me feel like this is a masterpiece the way I see it.
Guys i just realized the parallel bet the scene at 14:50 and the one from the first game where Ellie like Joel interrogated two of the bad guys askin the first to point where the big bad is hidin at on the map while the other confirms it,truly like father like daughter...*sigh* i miss Joel.. 😢
I think Nora's death is honestly the most frightening out of everything because it signifies Ellie's turn and what little innocence she has is gone. Because throughout the game Ellie never kills unless it's its provoked in almost every case whether it's people hunting her, or people trying to kill her friends. But Nora is special, at the beginning with the girl in the sewers she was going to let her go but once turned on she didn't hesitate calling herself as her showing compassion nearly got her killed. But with Nora at her mercy there's no need to kill, no need to hurt her but now she wants to. This signifies the change from the girl happy and optimistic wanting to go to space and free is now a slave to her own hatred and anger.

The only thing that was fun in this game is killing joel killers
The ending was sad but necessary
@@crazyfam2261 agreed

Watching the Ellie scenes again it’s interesting to see smaller moments explained by what happened during Abby’s scenes. Like when the soldier asks why the power was on in the hospital, I didn’t think anything of it first time but now I realise it was bc Abby was down there first
When Ellie was in the forest, the scars were talking about the girl that ran away. Thatis Lev.
And when Ellie sees all the surgical equipment and bloody cloths in the aquarium and shes like wtf? That was the aftermath of Yara's surgery

Tommy went full Rambo when Joel died, that was his breaking point, tommy was my fave in the second game

People should see it this way more often.
Because t h i s is the way.
The fact Ellie is almost not afraid of anything to me is terrifying

The hate this game got was so undeserved. Amazing in every way, graphics story voice acting mocap gameplay... All top tier. Love naughty dog.
@Arne Botha the fact that they killed him so easily is very representative of TLOU's world. i mean youre in a post-apocalpytic world, you can die at any moment, so him dying that way is realistic and expected in that world. i mean what did you all expect? him dying peacefully happily ever after when he made a LOT of ennemies wanting him dead? him dying brutally was the obvious choice for the continuation of the story, he's not invincible and can die as easily as any other character
most of the hate this game got is mostly by people who cant accept joel's death. and that means the game worked on them, lol, they feel the same as ellie. the game wanted us to seek revenge for ellie, and most of the players felt that way, whether you hate the game or not. the game also wanted us to hate abby, and playing her was a way to understand that while we can hate her, she's going through the same things as ellie. their stories are similar. with abby's perspective, ellie is a sick psychopath. with ellie's perspective, abby is also a sick psychopath. if you hate abby, well congrats because thats what the developers wanted you to feel
so the story worked. you cant convince otherwise lmao
+ a lot of the other criticism on the game is because of its supposedly "SJW" nature. i don't find that criticism valid IMO, i mean if youre a confident white hetero cis man, why are you mad about minorities being represented? youre that insecure seeing minorities? i mean ellie's been gay since 2013, why are you mad only NOW? where were you before? or are you just following a trend of hating on minorities representation because you literally have no personnality? youre not a chad. youre just an insecure individual incapable of seeing minorities being happy that they're finally recognized. its an issue we can see everywhere now, the tv show ms marvel, while having good reviews, has been review bombed just because its main protagonist is a muslim woman. you have to have a very miserable life to hate on cultural works only on the basis of the sexual orientation, race, origin, skin colour, religion or any other characteristics of a character making them different from the others.
(when im saying you, im talking generally, not someone specific)
so yeah the game is a masterpiece for me and i've yet to see any constructive negative review not including being mad about joel's death or the representation of minorities. It's actually discussed earlier in the game too, they see that Tommy did it at the hospital.
