That interrogation scene is one of the most badass moment in video game history, we don’t need a movie for that, this game is a masterpiece movie itself, an art
That’s exactly what I thought when I finished the game for the first time. It’s why I’ve never had a problem with Joel’s actions. Marlene tried to make the decision for both of them. She prepped Ellie for surgery without letting Ellie know what was going to happen, and she made sure to do it before Joel regained consciousness so he couldn’t object to it. She screwed herself because she tried to take control of a situation she had no right to command. @@SonicGlitchmaster1 I think its because Marlene knew that Joel would not have allowed Ellie to go one through with it, he had the capacity to persuade her.
That's why I know her saying "its what Ellie would have wanted" is nonsense. @@grey6545 if you don't count the context of the scene yes becouse of how ruthless it is. Its the same when people make a edit of how cool is Joel for take down the hospital and Jerry.
25:43 one of the best twists/parts. The idea that Marlene, a person who was entrusted to protect Ellie, chose to try and sacrifice her for her own vain cause... even if the cure was a success and not another repeated failure, she clearly did not love Ellie as a parent does. Any mother or father who loves their child would not sacrifice them for the entire world. The world was a cruel place before the apocalypse, and only became more savage in the aftermath. The idea that somehow, by ending the spread of cordyceps, everything would magically be more civilized after the world fell apart... insane.
Right. What I think is even more idotic is how when joel and ellie arrive at the base, they immediately get her prepped for surgery. Not even letting Joel see her one last time or let them be in the same room, be told how the vaccine will be made, the risks, and a choice of whether to do the surgery or not. Making it a possible but slim chance that Joel would allow it to happen even if he didn't like the idea. Complete ignorance on the fireflies, smh
I wouldn't call fighting to save the human race a "vain" cause. The world does not revolve around one life. if I was the cure, go ahead and kill me. My life will matter. The OG world was far from perfect....but sure as hell better than this new hell. One life vs the lives of everyone else? Joel deserved to die.
@@croc560 I want you to think about the person or any living thing you love more than the world. Your significant other, your mother, your father, your dog, etc. Now you're going to watch me cut its brain out, for a 50-50 chance at saving the human race. And also, the thing I'm killing, doesn't get a say in the matter. They're gonna be asleep. When you love a person, for real, you will not let them die if you can help it. Even if it means the lives of everyone else, or even your own. Joel loved Ellie. Marlene did not, and valued her cause more than her life. Any rationale you make "for the good of mankind" is irrelevant, especially when you consider how fucked up the human race can be. Even before the apocalypse, there was still slavery, mass genocides, abuse of the lower class, etc. Even if it was guaranteed that there was a vaccine that worked, when the virus was gone, I'm pretty sure either FEDRA, the Fireflies, or another group would attempt to leverage the vaccine for more power, or even if somehow they were generous with the cure, they'd still abuse that power to become a world power.
Marlene was against the idea of killing her when she spoke to Jerrry abt it in tlou part 2 and only stopped when Abby told him that she would want him to do the surgery for the cure, even though she didn't really seem to care for ellie that much, she still vauled her life like any other somewhat. Still tho, pretty fucking weird the way she treated Joel back there.
I love Joel as a protagonist, he has a lot of depth and is a flawed hero, it really shows just how human he is. In the end he was selfish to save Ellie because he probably knew she'd let herself die to save humanity, but that selfishness makes him human and I know a lot of us would've done the same. Plus you can kinda see why Ellie is mad at him, not just because he let the world die but he did slaughter a lot of people in that hospital, people who were trying to do the right thing
Well, at this point the world is already dead, and the fireflies appeared to have a grand total of three doctors, and very old, run down medical equipment in an even more run down dilapidated hospital. Synthesizing a vaccine would’ve taken time, if it was even possible. And if they somehow managed to do it, they also appeared to have no plan or ability to distribute it around the world and likely would have hoarded it for themselves. Because that’s how humans are. So idk if I would say Joel “Let the world die” but yeah, slaughtering a hospital full of people that were probably the only ones left who had half a chance of making a vaccine was an extremely selfish action, but it wasn’t set in stone that they would have even made a vaccine, let alone distribute it.
@@fivestarguy100 yeah that's true, it was just a "chance" at a vaccine it wasn't set in stone, but yeah Joel is just a really interesting character because he's not perfect and I think that's why we connect to him and love him the way we do as the player
He was completely in the right to save her. They never asked her for her permission and they tried the operation multiple times before and multiple people died for nothing but the operation to fail before. Fuck abby and her asshole dad. Part two is one of the worst games ever made.
Dude, what makes you think it’s right to let Ellie die on the very tiny chance a cure can be created in a decrepit and unsterile operating room run by people who’s skill in the matter you question? Selfish? More like realistic. The most obvious outcome of Ellie being dissected there is that anything they gain from her is contaminated and rendered useless by the environment or the people there mess it up.
No one mentions how the endings of Part I and Part II mirror one another with the main character mowing through an entire group to save someone - the only difference is Joel did out of love and Ellie did out of hate
To be fair, I did that too on my first playthrough, because I thought they would stab me in the back or something if I tried to take off with Ellie before dealing with them. It looked so risky, so I decided to play it safe. Didn't know they would just stay put and keep cowering. With the way this game likes to surprise you so often, you ain't taking no chances by the end of it. Obviously not the case here, though. He just killed em for the hell of it.
PEDRO PASCAL ACTUALLY REENACTED THE 16:10 SCENE SO WELL IN THE NEW TLOU SERIES. I REALLY HOPED THE PRODUCERS WOULD INCLUDE THIS MOMENT AND I'M NOT DISAPPOINTED 💯⚡
I remember that section when Joel carries Ellie at the hospital, I took a wrong turn and the game basically shows a cutscene of Joel getting executed but it didnt feel like a game over cutscene, I actually felt like that was it. kind of a "lets see how long you last but youll die anyway". I was devastated for a second and then I respawned and all was good lol.
From the point of veiw as a broad whole, what he did seems truly terrible. From the point of veiw of a father whose already lost a daughter, his actions are completely understandable. I mean why should he give up her life for a buch of strangers he has never met, in a world that is already horribly self-serving. Why should he be the saint? At the very least i love joel for the fact he's a badass, while being relentlessly human. A good protag.

Joel knew that rescuing Ellie was wrong, he didn't have a single argument against Marlene. He was purely driven by his emotions and the fear of losing his daughter again, and his last bit of humanity with her. This game, and its sequel, are here to tell us that there's no true good or bad in the real world, and egoism exists everywhere. Joel is not a villain, but he is no hero.
To be fair, Joel knew no matter what he said Marlene was dead set on her view of the "greater good" and would just be wasting time, he said all he needed to to with "You keep telling yourself that BS." Because the argument is obvious, they never gave her a choice they drugged her and knocked her out, planned to open her up to scrape her brain, and threaten to kill him just for showing his disapproval. Not to mention the fact that there was never a guarantee of this working, getting samples of the "mutated cordyceps" from Ellie doesn't mean instant vaccine, it meant they can start looking into trying to make one, which is still a long shot considering the lack of resources and manpower Marlene clearly said they don't have in this broken world. Yes they are both extremes to the possible choices to be made and in the end Joel was the winner, but both were still not great choices.

We all loved this game, and Joel, because it gave us a story of a world filled with death and despair, with morality being limited to what is needed to be done to survive in a given situation- if it even exists. Joel's ability to be a cold-blooded killer who we disapprove of, while being the loving character we all connect with, just makes us all love him due to the fact that his immorality knows no limits to do what he must in order to save those he loves. The story is sad, and he is by all means the villain, but he's a villain we root for, because he does it all for love in a world where it is gone.

Jesus, that final scene is just so much more fucked up than I remember. This remaster encapsulates the emotions so well. Joel knows he did something terrible, but his emotions drove that decision, and it’s very evident.
Honestly, fuck Marlene and Jerry and the whole lot of them. They betrayed Ellie's trust. They were ready to let her last conscious thoughts be frightened, desperate, fighting to stay alive as she drowned. Ready to cut her open for a cure that may or may not have even worked, without even having the balls to ask her what *she* wanted. They didn't even wait to get her consent for the operation because Marlene didn't want to risk losing the moral high ground on the off chance Ellie said no. The whole time she wouldn't even empathize with Joel saying that her suffering was worse, and there's no real guarantee the operation would have resulted in a successful vaccine. That's a big part of why I ultimately don't really care that Joel stopped the Fireflies
I can't believe that such a badass character was only meant to be the protagonist of one single game. I truly hope that this comment will age poorly.
I honestly would love a game about the 20 years we did not see about Joel

I want them to do a dlc for Ish and the sewer people
Dude, what makes you think it’s right to let Ellie die on the very tiny chance a cure can be created in a decrepit and unsterile operating room run by people who’s skill in the matter you question? Selfish? More like realistic.
The most obvious outcome of Ellie being dissected there is that anything they gain from her is contaminated and rendered useless by the environment or the people there mess it up.

For example the leaked footage showed a garbage revolver that took two shots to kill but in the game it's a one shot always. I would call the overall experience of the remake better for the most part.
And it got him killed. Just like Bill said, caring in this world will get you killed.
