I was born in London 🇬🇧 I married an American in 19-72 at age 23 , I am 75 now ,and have lived here in the USA 🇺🇸 FOR 52 years . I love watching this show , I watched it with my mother decades ago .. now I can watch it here . Thank you for your recommendation to watch Dinnerladies , I will do that , again thank you Lawrence .. so much .
I have been working my way through these old Coronation Streets that you have so kindly put up, (and occasionally commenting) and realised I have not thanked you EveHenleySpread. I am so grateful, not least because you have taken my mind away from all the depressing political nonsense that is going on the last few years. I have had a fair few belly laughs over these episodes, and when I get to the end, I'm going back to watch all over again. I really hope when I'm done, the pendulum of politics has swung back to sanity.
Non-Brits who like watching this must have watched or must watch the brilliant Dinnerladies, which featured 7 actors who have appeared in Coronation Street including Mavis, Ken's first wife Valerie, Joanne Froggatt, Kevin's sister, Sunita Alahan, and Eileen.
Maxine Peake and Duncan Preston also appeared in Corrie in minor roles. Maxine played Belinda Peach who was a date for Ashley in 1999. Duncan played a conman in 2005 I believe.
Bernard Wrigley played a bread man in Corrie during the 80's and then the chauffeur for the Ogden's night out. In the dinnerladies, he played one of the workman at the factory who provided many merry quips whilst waiting for his chips.
"Between them, they've cooked up a typhoon of lust!" I am using that from now on, thank you Derek. Also, pretty sure the artistic, smooth talking other man storyline was in Downton Abbey as well XD
Peter Baldwin's portrayal of petty Derek was brilliant! I hope that people told him before he died that viewers around the world really enjoy watching him.
2:11:28 It is interesting that Raquel thinks Bet should get back together with Charlie because they love one another, but she doesn’t feel the same about Des. I understand both perspectives, and there’s no judgement either way, but I find it interesting.
Mike omg. He is so proud of himself. The big Man is just like Steve two peas in a pod so much alike. He does talk a load of fowl house confetti. Mavis has finally found her in er voice and good for her LoL thanks Eve I am enjoying yet another month.
Bett was everything on Coronation Street , watching her evolve over the years growing into a mentor for many . I loved her comedic caricature, as much as her straight forward , no nonsense one .. She was wonderful , she was the heart of Coronation Street . Her fashion seance was unique I was eager to see what she would be wearing next .. Love you Bett , you are a fine actress .
Coronation street is a woke fest these days decent storyline and brilliant characters no longer exhist it's all about race and homosexuality now. Boring rubbish

I agree with Kat Y - Mavis and Derek seemed to be promoted as figures of fun, but they weren't really fun because they were so pompous, fussy and self-righteous. It was almost as if they belonged in the 1830s rather than the 1990s, a sort of Dickensian Mr. and Mrs. Bumble lost in the modern world. Mavis's vanity over the art class - and when she wasn't centre of attention was cringeworthy, not funny in the least. No wonder Rita was caustic at times, it was probably the only way to deal with her and stay sane.
I thought they'd be completely twee and cringy the whole time, but they've been in a spiteful, jealous battle for ages. They use to be equally irritating, but for me, Mavis has become worse than Derek. That's not easy.
I couldn't agree more. The whole Mavis/Derek thing is becoming very, very tedious and unbelievable. Mind you, so is the Deirdre/Shammy thing. Lots of fast-forwarding happening for me this month!
Mavis and Denise are remembering wrong about "Rebecca." The portrait to which they refer is Max's ancestor, Lady Caroline de Winter, not Max's 1st wife, although Rebecca did copy the costume for a ball, as did "the nameless one," on the advice of Mrs. Danvers, the evil housekeeper! Oh happy days!
Bet is on her way back up. Loved her and Raquel's night with her laying on the bar Margaretta yes Betty. But it was dishwasher salt. No wonder they felt I'll. It was a great episode though. Steve is a cocky boy. Well he will learn through the years. Mike can be so comical and Alma well she is fantastic whatever comes out of her mouth. Cheers Eve. Back to work Friday but will still keep up. Thanks again
Mike Baldwin carries on like he is Donald Trump when he talks about business. This 'hot shot' has spent all his life crawling around backstreets, stopping anyone else becoming successful. The older he gets the more of a mood hoover he becomes.
"You reap what you sow". I'm not shocked at all that Curly got the sack. He certainly made Kimberly's life hell back in 1991 and as I said his behaviour at that point was borderline frightening. Kimberly wasn't lying at all in her complaint. Personally I don't blame her for complaining. She had every right to do so. Elaine Fenwick was clearly a career driven woman with ambitions to climb the Bettabuy's ladder. Curly did stop her transfer to Goole for his own ends. He did seem to treat her as inferior during her time there. Plus the way he pestered her was unsettling to watch as well. So you can't blame Miss Fenwick for holding a grudge. Plus it's mentioned that other members of the staff filed complaints. I don't know why he kept saying it wasn't like that when it was. Aw well. As a side note I really like Mrs Rogers. Jill Benedict plays the sinister head office part incredibly well. Sort of a cross between Brandon Scott and Patsy Stone from Ab Fab. Her facial expressions speak a thousand words. The way she delivered the "Incompetence and sleaze" line was sheer perfection and actually made me chuckle a little. It's a shame she wasn't used more in the Bettabuys story. What do you guys think?
Curly is a creep, idk how he got a pass for this long. Imagine telling any subordinates that if they date you, they could be on the fast track to promotion (Andy’s ex, wru bro code?) He tried to wake up another black out drunk colleague to have it off with her. He called Raquel a tease because she was his friend, which wasn’t enough for him. I actually think he’s quite vile.
@@minx- Agreed! I hated we way he treated Shirley, Kimberly and Elaine. I definitely feel Angie had a lucky escape too. He never seemed to have any care about who got hurt in the process. Just as long as he got what he wanted. Curly is one of my least favourites.
Don't think there was ever a Mavis and Derek storyline remotely interesting... they should have kept Mavis single and taken her down another path, perhaps with some more serious storylines showing the other side to her instead of endless, far fetched, comedy capers, first with Victor then Derek.
Absolutely agree with that! All the tedious stuff about him going from job to job, each one more embarrassing than the last.. yawn!! All the silly pranks that Des plays on that I find nauseating too.
Not a spoiler but … A mystery character drawn off screen for years appears. They are better than I could have expected. Very smart writing and casting.
I used to think Derek was just annoying. Now I think he's ghastly!!! Dreary and Samir...cringeworthy!!!! Aaagh! There's no chemistry and what there is, is embarrassing.! Always love Bet.
