Eastenders had just launched a couple of months before this to great acclaim and had started to Syphon off viewers from Coronation Street, which was getting a lot of criticism for being overly nostalgic and unrealistic. EastEnders was more gritty and was seen to be more in touch with 1980s Britain, which was seeing a huge violent crime increase. Hilda's storyline when she's broken into was likely a response to that, to try and make Coronation Street more in touch with what was happening in Britain at the time.
I thought Stan Ogden was stuck in the Victorian times expecting his tea on the table when he comes in from work, but Brian's in the same league, by the way I'm a man.

I don't think it was RTerry who burgled Hilda, I do think he respected her. He did know, as he spoke of it, how those burglars operated to make Hilda feel more at peace.

Listening to Gail's landlady talk is a good reminder of what attitudes were like in her generation (pretty much all of them no longer with us). There was a Victorian obsession with marriage. Anything that happened within a marriage was acceptable. Pretty much anything that happened outside a marriage was not acceptable.
But since she married Brian she found out she hated being married and having Nicky so she forced herself into thinking she was trapped and believed highly in this which is the total opposite of having any critical thought, so she weaved herself into thinking everything she did was right when in reality it was not...she still wins in the end though. Brian "You are my wife!" Gail "Your wife!" She actually said that.
Anything to do with the Tilsleys is dull as ditchwater.. you can tell Bill Podmore’s influence is wavering at this point as the humour has almost completely gone! A bit like in the present day Corrie!
