    Jack and Vera are the last of Corrie's brilliant comedy double acts IMHO. I loved Stan and Hilda but Jack & Vera are a wonderful substitute. And I love the comedy "conflict" between Phyllis and Percy, a miserable old git living in the past and fibbing about how he defeated Hi**er single-handed (from the catering corp, natch) and a wily, funny, over-sharing old woman who fancies Percy. I grew up in Portsmouth. The place was full of real life Percy Sugden's when I was a kid. Thanks for these fabulous uploads - from when Corrie had believable characters and storylines and so much humour. x

    The last episode of this month at around 4:19:30 is where Lynne/ Ivy's troubles on the show really start, if you believe that bosses were angry with her appearance changes. She may have had very minor things done previously, but now her injections are very noticeable & it's not gone well, she looks like she's been punched in the face; I think I have a vague memory of this at the time & we all said to each other "what's wrong with Ivy's face?!" Look out for long 2 shots, shots from behind her & off to the side as the cameramen mitigate the horror ;-)

      I always wondered if it was a bit more than just the face lift and if it had anything to do with her drinking. I found her slurring speech gradually getting worse and worse to the point where I found her very hard to understrand. And we all know that after she left the street in all her tv appearances she was pissed.

    It would be the final year, I would watch Coronation Street because I joined the army in December 1994 and left England for a very long time. If I ever caught it on a TV network, "it was big in Canada when I was there," I'd watch it and think of home. I had a t-shirt with Reg's face on the front with the slogan "knowledge is power." Everyone was baffled with it. Lol😂

    34:02 you have to laugh at the blatant non-PC fat shaming by Audrey over Vivian Barford (later to star as Emmerdale’s Betty Eagleton)… she just wouldn’t get away with this in this woke era we’re living through 2021!

    • @paulacookgomez1046
      @paulacookgomez1046 2 роки тому +10

      Normally I am against all the PC censorship that goes on today. However I still believe that sensitivity to people's feelings is important. I have to admit that Audrey's comments about Vivian upset me a bit as a plus sized person. Whenever I visited family in the UK during the late 70s and 80s I experienced many jokes from family about my "curves"... Not so much in the USA.

    • @H3len50

      I think Audrey can be a very cruel , selfish and judgemental woman at times. She seems to be so flighty and it is always all about her, until something happens to Alf, She then has some realisation and then goes back to her usual selfish self. I do struggle to like her. It is not the first time she has made comments about someone's weight. In this "woke era" it would not fly but to be honest I have always thought it a horrible thing to do to talk about someone's weight.

    • @H3len50

      @@paulacookgomez1046 , I do as well. It is a horrible damaging thing to joke about. I have been pretty average all my life but I lost a lot of my mobility due to a medical condition so the walking I did stopped. My meds make it difficult to lose weight and I have been left with Long Covid as well. I went to my nieces wedding and I had gained some weight but I wore a beautiful 1950's dress. it was also my first outing with my walking stick so I felt very self conscious. I thought I looked okay but my sister in law came round for a few drinks one night and remarked at how much weight I had gained and how fat I was. I was horrified and cut to the core. I am still struggling with my weight and her words are still there. It hurts.

    Why don't Bet and Vicki, whenever they go on a trip, exit the Rovers by the door next to the stairs, instead of dragging their luggage through the bar? Surely the taxi could wait for them outside that exit?

    @Lee Jones - To me, Vicky had the right sort of cool aloofness an upper-middle-class privately-educated girl may well have in a working-class environment. It isn't particularly appealing , nor does it make her likable, but it's almost to be expected. She looks and behaves like someone who is uncomfortable and doesn't really fit in, nor ever will.

    I find Jim to be thoroughly unpleasant in every possible way. And Liz sticking up for him, when he is basically a wife beater in waiting, makes me sick. It's not the brewery's fault she lost her job, it's their fault, Jim's fault for hitting Richard, Liz's fault for breaking the brewery's rule by letting Jim back inside. They've got a proper nerve thinking about suing them. Liz should've been sacked as soon as Jim showed his true colours, it was obvious she would stick by him because she is weak and deluded. The overt blasting of Christianity, having a vicar say it’s all rubbish, is heavy handed social messaging. It’s obviously the atheist writers crow baring in a slam at Christianity.
    I find it sad, unoriginal and wimpy. It’s not deep, though I promise the writers think it is. I’m so bored with it🙄

      I'm Pagan, so have good reason to wield a vendetta against Christianity 😂 but as far as I'm concerned whatever gives people hope, comfort and a sense of belonging is never a bad thing.

    A girl as good looking as Fiona wouldn't have not had a boyfriend, unless she was literally fighting them off or resisting. Not during the days when dating was still more conventional, before modern day standard's and social media.

      I think that's a little harsh, I find her quite naturalistic as Corrie goes & don't forget she's sort of a legacy actor, in that she started as a child on the show, but is still there as she's gotten older, so you never really know whether a child can act or not. The only bad actor on the show at the moment is Bet's Charlie, very odd casting, I can see the visual appeal but I can barely hear a word!

    • @EveHenleySpread
      @EveHenleySpread  3 роки тому +9

      And yet didn’t the actor who played Charlie go on to have a career in the USA? Slightly surprising, perhaps that was a visual thing too. I agree Vicky is quite good, it’s Dawn Acton as Tracy I can’t stand, she reads the lines out as if it’s the first time she’s seen them, never made the grade from child to adult actress! Saw her DJing in Manchester on Saturday lol.

    This is February. The approximate time of Chinese new year. All the takeaways would be giving out calendars with the animals for the various years. If I wanted to know how old someone was, I would ask a few people, as well as that someone, what year they were born and tell them what animal sign they are. Quite simple maths then. Born in 1953, you're a snake. 70 years old.

    Does Jim ever say anything but sorry? I do like him but I can't stand his scenes with Liz. Now when he goes up to Ken I know what he's going to say...yes,...SORRY! I just would like to see Jim get a better script. Tedious in the extreme!!!Liz changing her mind every second minute. Tedious!!! We all know it's going to faaall apaaart agaaain! Yes Liz because it's actually what you want. Sooo selfish! Poor ole lovely hotheaded Jim. He just needs a good steady woman.
    The plots overall are a bit repetitive. Here we go again, Alf's last day in the shop!
