I agree. The 1st ride seems to get it right. I mostly prefer my rides on the thin side, though. An excellent video/demonstration and great playing. However, it makes me appreciate my personal selection even more.
1st two are the clear winners for me because they shoulder crash so well. Runners up in that regard are the 3rd and last cymbals. The ride sound of all 8 are super. Superb playing, btw!!
What a great comparison, they all sound wonderful. But my personal favorite was the Renaissance, and the K high bell dry was also right there, as was the 22" dark med ride. And your playing makes this a pleasure, thank you for this wonderful video.
22" New Stamp K Istanbul, man, there's just something about that sound. Reminds me of Cousin Mary from Giant Steps for some reason. Also, great playing and really interesting video.
That A sounds like a real flash from the past. I like the Renaissance better than some of the moonscape models later in the video, but my fave was the K dark medium--which turns out to be what I'm playing now, so I guess I picked the right one when I bought it. It's dark but it has a little bit of brightness in the "ping" and when you crash it.
The K Con Hi Bell has the best wash with excellent stick definition and volume on accents. I have a K Con 20" Low Medium that just isn't exciting to me. Hence, I am here viewing your awesome playing and ride comparison. Thank you for making this video!
There's a reason why the K s are usually the preferred choice for this music. It just sits well with everything else. Even if my ride cymbal sounds gorgeous on its own, if it gets in the way of hearing the other instruments properly, then it is the wrong ride cymbal for that particular situation.
To me the 22" Dark Medium K sounded the most pleasant. It's something about the wash it has. It's not overbearing but perfectly sound and timed for Jazz. I don't know how to explain it but it fills the sound compared to the other cymbals if that makes any sense.
I thought the Con Med Low worked best in this situation. But my personal preference is that a ride cymbal be very controllable, and have an understated voice in every situation that becomes more special the more you hear it.
Wow! Nice playing and very interesting. Accent sounds and wash with the Renaisance was absolutelyu beautiful. You played the Renaissance ride mostly on the clustered hammering which mutes some of that beautiful low wash.
I like the 22" new Stamp K instanbul sound good I had a K intanbul 24" This cymbal was great for jazz amazing cymbal intel this day I haven't heard one like that one in 1980 my custom van was stolen the cymbal was in the van.
Great video. The Renaissance is my personal favourite in this setting, but the suprise 'winner' for me was the Dark Medium. That cymbal type has to be the true king (or should it be queen?) of versatility. Its the only one of these that could be dropped into a high volume setting and still perform really well. I must get one!
The first which I believe was an A with 3 rivets was the bomb. The new Ks with the bomb crater hammering take the Jazzy shimmer out of the cymbals voice.
Happy to own a 22 K Dark Medium. Such versatile pie for any genre (Not saying the others sound bad of course). Thanks for sharing this test ride (pun totally intended).
Jazz was extremely hard for me, what helped me was working on doubles and controlling rebound. All I played was rock/pop/R&B. I would like to think I've gotten Jazz/Funk a little more down now. Currently working on Caravan from the movie WhipLash. Keep practicing brother! You got this!
22 k con renaisance is my top choice! fantastic definition and so well balanced . everything else has a dominant frequency. k con is beautifully balanced for me.
All of these sound good. Great playing. Art Blakey never scrutinized cymbals and just played whatever he had at hand. Of course, he had the Brooklyn Gretsch factory at hand. But still, a good cymbal will sound great with a great player.
Well Done. That was a pleasure listening to someone play that tempo. Most of the cymbals were crakers, just a few I would kick out of bed. The 1st one made a nice impression. I found the hi bell to be unique. To much choice. When I was starting out i bought some Zildjians from my cousin. They were medium light jazz cymbals he bought in Europe for Jazz clubing. On a move i sold them, in retrospect a big mistake. In my head I am trying retrace their sound signature. A lot of cymbals I check out have unpleasant to my ears harmonics. I can see how some would like the Turkish Instanbul cymbals, I don't really care for their frequencys. I wonder if the older Zildjians l had really shimmered or it is just my imagination. I mean it seems every aspect of drumming gear has been improving for the most part. Was there anything special about vintage cymbals?
To me, the 22" new stamp is the champ. It doesn't suffer from trying to appeal to a demographic or genre--it's just a CYMBAL with all the mystique of ancient--ok "old"--lineage. It's also the prettiest and most pleasingly complex, to me. Great old K stick. Body and quick decay. What's not to love. The other I like is the 20 block stamp A. Pretty much the same comment as the K but I like the K's dirt.
So I might be crazy but 20" A Hollow Block Stamp sounds strangely similar to the 20" ZHT Medium Ride. I know the ZHT is a budget/student type cymbal but the wash and tone are the exact same. Maybe a nice alternative for people looking for that sound. Just wanted to throw that out there.
All beautiful cymbals but gun to head, I’d go with the Hollow block (first one). It’s a little Brighter with great definition and overtones. The last one would be my second choice. Dark K.
It's interesting how the new stamp K Istanbul sounds great, and has no fancy hammering patterns when compared to the Renaissance ride. The Renaissance ride sounds amazing though. I was surprised you had a Dry complex ride, I own the Dry complex ride 2 (24"). I think the Renaissance is definitely influenced by the dry complex ride.
0:10 20" A Hollow Block Stamp 1:45 20" New Stamp K 3:20 22" K Con Renaissance Ride 4:55 22" K Con Medium Thin Low 6:30 22" New Stamp K Istanbul 8:05 22" K Custom Dry Complex Ride 9:41 22" K Con Hi Bell Dry Ride 11:16 22" K Dark Medium Ride
The new Constantinople are the closest to the old Istanbul K's. The ones with the Big K sound nothing like a classic K. Not that they sound bad -- just different.
The con medium thin low, high bell dry, and dark medium K all sound pretty rough for this music... the rest are absolutely gorgeous though, across the decades of jazz. If Im playing jazz messengers stuff Id play that A, if Im playing modern Joel Ross/Amrbose stuff etc Id play that K complex or renaissance.
Here's my newest cymbal video. Check it out if you like!

The 22” K Con Renaissance Ride sounded amazing to me. Perfect sound for jazz!
yaps, it's my winner too
@@CrappyProducts Ditto! K Con Renaissance Ride all night baby! Though I will say I like the contrasting 20" A Hollow Block Stomp too!
0:11 - 20" A Hollow Block Stomp

thanks
The best was the first cymbal in my opinion. It had alot of response and brightness and "swell". Beautiful playing. A pleasure to listen to.
Agreed on all points :)
I agree. The 1st ride seems to get it right. I mostly prefer my rides on the thin side, though.
An excellent video/demonstration and great playing. However, it makes me appreciate my personal selection even more.
they all sound great. though I think any ride would sound good with your playing
Absolutely. Great great playing.
Yah totally agree. I mean this is some classy stuff right here. Awesome.
seriously, probably more archer than the arrow here. peace.
13 minutes very well spent!
1st two are the clear winners for me because they shoulder crash so well. Runners up in that regard are the 3rd and last cymbals. The ride sound of all 8 are super.
Superb playing, btw!!
What an incredible drummer
oh...that is a VERY nice collection.
I didn't expect to like the 22" K Dark Medium the best but I did. Lots of amazing sounding cymbals there and all superbly played.
K Custom Dry Complex : the only one where you could properly hear the bass playing in all its beauty. And the piano shined through okay to boot.
Agreed, wasn't expecting to like this one the most.
I own the first version. just amazing ride
I have K 22" Dark Medium Ride. It's a boss in all of styles.
DrummerVL800 I just got one. Amazing cymbal. I also want a heavier one as those have a more potent bell.
Steven Webster Don’t ever use those guys again.
Phenomenal playing, and wonderful cymbals!
Great well produced video and great playing. Thanks!
This is just so much greatness. Thank you for putting in the time for this. It is well appreciated.
I fell deeply in love with the 22 K Con Hi Bell Dry. omg
Crazy awesome collection.
What a great comparison, they all sound wonderful. But my personal favorite was the Renaissance, and the K high bell dry was also right there, as was the 22" dark med ride. And your playing makes this a pleasure, thank you for this wonderful video.
Favorite is the Renaissance ride...beautiful playing, by the way!
That 22" K Dark Medium Ride Brings A Mellow Vibe And Tone To The Music ..... It Compliments Versus Overpower.
22" New Stamp K Istanbul, man, there's just something about that sound. Reminds me of Cousin Mary from Giant Steps for some reason. Also, great playing and really interesting video.
stunning !!! you play very good and the Zildjian are fantastic !!!
I reckon you could make a dustbin lid swing, love it !!
I do doubt that ;) But thanks anyway!
That was a damn good presentation... great souding.
The K Dark Medium ride seems like a great do it all kind of ride. I’ll have to keep my eye out for one of those.
To me the 22" Dark Medium K sounded the most pleasant. It's something about the wash it has. It's not overbearing but perfectly sound and timed for Jazz. I don't know how to explain it but it fills the sound compared to the other cymbals if that makes any sense.
Great time...Lovely...Disciplined playing!
I thought the Con Med Low worked best in this situation. But my personal preference is that a ride cymbal be very controllable, and have an understated voice in every situation that becomes more special the more you hear it.
Man these are all fantastic I wish I had anyone of them!
All of them sound great. The A Hollow Block is so classic. Love that sound. The Con. High Bell was especially sweet to me.
Great playing!
nice touch! they all sound great!
Congratulations! Good test, great music!
Lovely cymbals, great playing. All these cymbals are awesomw, you make them sound good. Also the best comparison video on youtube :)
Seriously Awesome collection..... Nice Video
I have an old 60’s A hollow block just like the first with 3 rivets and a very similar bright tone, I’m super happy with it.
New Stamp it's the sound that reminds me of the great jazz heroes...
Killer playing very tasteful
absolutely love the k Constantinople hi bell dry ride
I think this is a good example of the player really is the sound. You sound like "you" on all the cymbals and that's the key.
Thank you very much
Kinda surprised how good the K Dark Medium sounds.
The new stamp sounds very much like the ride on "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane
The first which I believe was an A with 3 rivets was the bomb. The new Ks with the bomb crater hammering take the Jazzy shimmer out of the cymbals voice.
1st one - game over. Great swing!
FOR ME,THE RENAISSANCE,IS BETTER THAN THE OTHERS
Happy to own a 22 K Dark Medium. Such versatile pie for any genre (Not saying the others sound bad of course).
Thanks for sharing this test ride (pun totally intended).
Yea, love the Vic Firth SPE2
Great still learning to get my hand to move that fast

Love those sticks
Love the video,
22 k con renaisance is my top choice! fantastic definition and so well balanced . everything else has a dominant frequency. k con is beautifully balanced for me.
Agreed!
agree aswell
Agree. He played on the cluster hammering which kills some of the low wash, but still very nice.
All of these sound good. Great playing. Art Blakey never scrutinized cymbals and just played whatever he had at hand. Of course, he had the Brooklyn Gretsch factory at hand. But still, a good cymbal will sound great with a great player.
Sounds so good
The A was lovely
22" Reny is stunning, beautiful jewel! Hard to decide on this vid tho
Yea, they all sound very good
Thanks- Awesome idea!!!! Thankyou. I like the 22 Renaissance best! Followed closely by the New Stamp Istanbul
That first cymbal was smoother than silk....#1..... but each one was fantastic
I really liked the:
22 K Con Med. Thin Low Ride
and
22 K Con Hi Bell Dry Ride
Beauties.
Well Done. That was a pleasure listening to someone play that tempo. Most of the cymbals were crakers, just a few I would kick out of bed. The 1st one made a nice impression. K Dark Medium Ride got the sweetest spot.
the 22 dark medium sounds best to my ears.
To me, the 22" new stamp is the champ. It doesn't suffer from trying to appeal to a demographic or genre--it's just a CYMBAL with all the mystique of ancient--ok "old"--lineage. I like the first cymbal the A with the hollowed out black stamp logo.
Hey how many grams is that hollow block
I like the first one and the very last one.
That was fun!
Nice work
My top 3 of this video:
1.) K Con Renaissance
2.) Hi Bell Dry Ride
3.) New Stamp K Istanbul
All beautiful cymbals but gun to head, I’d go with the Hollow block (first one). It’s a little Brighter with great definition and overtones. The last one would be my second choice. Dark K.
The ones with the sizzles and the "22 K medium dark ride.
Love the ´22 New Stamp K Istanbul
For me, the K Con's are the best sounding rides.
They all sound great at this tempo. Can you do a video with a slower medium tempo with these same cymbals ?
It's interesting how the new stamp K Istanbul sounds great, and has no fancy hammering patterns when compared to the Renaissance ride. The Renaissance ride sounds amazing though. I was surprised you had a Dry complex ride, I own the Dry complex ride 2 (24"). I think the Renaissance is definitely influenced by the dry complex ride.
Thank you for this! Any chance you could post the weights of these rides?
0:10 20" A Hollow Block Stamp
1:45 20" New Stamp K
3:20 22" K Con Renaissance Ride
4:55 22" K Con Medium Thin Low
6:30 22" New Stamp K Istanbul
8:05 22" K Custom Dry Complex Ride
9:41 22" K Con Hi Bell Dry Ride
11:16 22" K Dark Medium Ride
The best is by far, in my opinion, the hollow block stamp vintage A.
I like K con renaissance and K dark medium equally. 1a and 1b. Thanks!
what weight is the 50s avedis its lovely!
The dry rides are excellent for stick definition, but horrible to crash on. Otherwise, this is a great video for the purpose.
Hey I know this video is 8 years old but I'd really appreciate any info you can provide on cymbal #1, such as the weight. Sounds absolutely perfect.
kruno levacic!
LET US VOTE OUR FAVORITE
K.Zildjian Renaissance 22! And K Dark Ride of course
What’s the weight of that Renaissance sounds amazing
No bounce ride? Their cymbals are the bomb.
1.) K Con Renaissance
2.) New Stamp K Istanbul
3.) A Hollow Block Stamp
This is a great comparison video.
I wonder where did you get the backing track?
John Riley “Beyond Bop”
20" New Stamp K is the one 👌
The new Constantinople are the closest to the old Istanbul K's. The ones with the Big K sound nothing like a classic K. Not that they sound bad -- just different.
