I thought the same thing when this you-tuber was showing off a warehouse full of vintage car parts, all fastidiously organized... the owner had recently passed.
Oh how I miss the sound of this type of engine. I worked around many of them on tugs. They would make falling asleep very easy. I used to own a 90 foot Iron hull tug that was built in 1919. She is still working.
The proper oil, in the proper amount at the proper time and the engine is as clean as a brand new and runs like it! A beautiful sound! Treat anything with respect and it will treat you with respect, especially those older mechanical systems! He certainly loves his boat and it loves him! Hard work always pays off in dividends! Thank you for the armchair experience, my friend!
I've watched quite a few of your videos now and they are wonderful! Watching the owners of these old boats go through their well rehearsed routines as they go through the starting of the old engines is captivating. I have had a life long fascination with old machines but it's also fascinating watching the people who look after them- you always learn something new.
The engine ought to be named Old Reliable. You take care of it and it takes care of you. This is from an age and a people who knew what they owned, how it worked and took care of all the details. Thanks for a wonderful video.
Here's the thing, these old engines were designed so after all that prep, they will run flawless until you shut them down. Hard to justify that kind of reliability nowadays. I love this thing.
Today's engines have overlapping layers of technology to accomplish the same thing as this engine. Most of the time the idea is to just turn the shaft and make the propeller turn!
That old engine sure is and still sounds swiftfully flawless like it's going to continue puffing forever till a new Captain and of course a new engineer takes over. Salute!
That was the best most enjoyable sound ever!! I adore your boat! It's great ta see a lady doing all the stuff she was. You 2 are great ppl to care an maintain such a class ship✌🏻💗😊❣️
I would love to go to Holland to see the wonderful engines! RESPECT to the Ducth looking after these pieces of history. AS an engineer the sound puts me to sleep BLISS!
Great boat, love the sound, reminds me of an old Fairbanks Morse or Atlas. Thank you for sharing! You keep the engine and engine room clean and orderly, great to see that someone cares!!
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! Great ship, great engine, great owner/Captain. Because everything is so well greased, engines like that nearly run forever. Not much horsepower, but a lot of torque in this big old machine. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all involved people.
When I was a kid, I was first mate on my father's tug. At the end of the day during the winter, I would always take a nap on the warm engine hatch. There's something special about that sound and the smell of diesel.
A beautiful old tugboat, and an engine that lasts forever. What more could one want. Should you want to listen to music in the evening, just start the engine.
Oh the sounds of that engine make me remember as a boy the sounds of the old John Deer tractor we had, single cylinder with a 72 pound fly wheel. Just a chug 1, 2, 3, chug so soothing.
This entire video is music for the soul. Harking back to a time when engineers had to have a feeling for their engines, and study them the way a good rider studies a horse.
Good to see someone keeping such an old boat and engine running. Looks like quite a bit of skill is needed to learn to run that boat but still I suspect that with care it will outlast all the fiberglass toys you went by in the river
Danke!
Do you 'old boat' fans remember the 1960s movie, 'The Sand Pebbles' starring Steve McQueen? During that movie, Steve explains how the steam plant works to one of the Chinese firemen. He explained it on the level of his Chinese shipmate's understanding. This is what Capt Martin Speyer did for those who watched this EXCELLENT video. In 1995, I road the Silverton & Durango RR (90 mile round trip tourist RR). Our engine was a 1927 Baldwin Locomotive working with 150 psi. That engine sounded, smelled, and looked wonderful, just like Capt Speyer's tug. The largest air show west of the Mississippi River in USA is the Miramar Air Show, Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar. The fighters and bombers (jets) are cool, but blast your ears off and hard to follow as they streak by. Contrast that with the Chino Air Show, the largest antique air show where they have 80 year old WWII fighters and bombers with reciprocating engines, blowing out smoke, noise, and oil. The smells are heavenly, plus the various designs of the aircraft, just outstanding. You can watch them SLOWLY fly-by and not go home deaf, so much better than Miramar. Just my old opinion at age 70; some people consider me a walking relic of history... :-) BTW, anything east of the Mississippi River is hostile, unexplored waste land.
Love the sound of the engine..heerlijk geluid uit die motor.. keep up the good job preserving such an old vessel and engine. Thanks for sharing this video.
Love seeing that big tug prop lashed up behind the towing bits.
And a parking brake has this boat also.
Very handy if you have to stop uphill or downhill.
Holy Cats, things I never knew. As has been said, when an old man dies, a liberary burns down. Salute to speyer.
I thought the same thing when this you-tuber was showing off a warehouse full of vintage car parts, all fastidiously organized... the owner had recently passed.
Great solid engineering, I was a diesel submarine Engine Room Artificer and find these videos very rewarding. thank you. Regards from U.K. AJ
I wish more people were as comfortable as this guy when it comes to explaining how stuff works.
Oh how I miss the sound of this type of engine. I worked around many of them on tugs. They would make falling asleep very easy. I used to own a 90 foot Iron hull tug that was built in 1919. She is still working.
Nice to know that there are people who still love and care for these old vessels.

Well done! That ship found it's "forever" captain. It's like the two needed to find each other to have more happiness in life.
I don't think that 😎God will be much pleased with captains bringing their boats with them to heaven "forever."
Nope. Don't think so.
Definitely not!

Thanks for a wonderful video.
Absolutely brilliant. .thank you so much for adding the subtitles. . Some of the most pleasant people on the planet in these short films

Our failure to justify reliable technology is a huge mistake. Newer is not necessarily better.

Fantastic old engineering. Not only the sound but the smell in the engine room must be intoxicating, wish i could share that 1 last time....thank you
I love the fact that these fantastic old boats, and the knowledge that goes with them, is being kept alive by enthusiasts. Great video.
That is a beautiful old ship, and that engine, what a cool sounding tick-over. Love it
What a beautiful engine- I'm in love with it!
Brilliant old tugboat. Nice to see the engine room. Full of character and charm.
Beautiful to see that engine in action running so well being so old, just great.
Bedankt voor de uitleg!
Zeer duidelijk allemaal, wat een pracht geluid.
Helaas blijft het voor mij bij dromen!
Maar wie weet ooit!
What a joy to watch this ship and the owner ! Groeten van BC Canada.

I can tell you are very proud to be owning, maintaining and operating such a beautiful old vessel. I would be too!!

Very nice. Beautiful old engine. Nice boat. Thanks.
When you fired up the engine it brought a tear to my eyes. It is such a beautiful sounding engine.

Because not all nerds are into video games. Some preserve history.
Wonderful senior boat; Thank yo very much!
Such a lovely little show. Thank you!

fantastic I've just spent 11 yrs on a boat with 8 pot Gardner 1957 So the engine was new around 55 and runs great
Zo'n schip gaat nog tweehonderd jaar mee. 👍
What a sweet sweet sounding engine. Someone shows it a lot of love.
It would be an honor to be the Stuart of such a vessel. I'm sure the owner also feels that way and will likely keep it in fine form as long as he can.
A beautiful old tugboat, and an engine that lasts forever. What more could one want.
Should you want to listen to music in the evening, just start the engine.
@Thiago Michael His girlfriend is a farm animal? (Joking. I don't like spam like that.)

Look how clean the engine is.
I have absolutely no interest in engines whatsoever, but wow, this was a fascinating video, loved it!! I'm going to watch your other ones now too!
What a fantastic video! Every second has good meaning to it.

119 yrs of history God Bless. It maybe old but who cares the stories that haul carries and the men that sailed on it Hardened to the Core.
Such a lovely tug, the sound is amazing, thanks for the video.
Agreed excellent video
Prachtig
Weer een mooie film meneer Heeresma.
Excellent! Didn’t understand the chap too well, but starting a diesel is about the same in any language!
Bet it smells as wonderful as it sounds.
