ENGINE ROOM LULLABY (52) - Kromhout M2 aboard the Specht

- Since 1983, Maarten Henket had been the owner of the Specht, a tugboat of the Amsterdammer type from 1926 with a one cylinder Kromhout M2 hot bulb engine from the same year. De engine is started by hand by ‘rocking’ the flywheel against the compression. ‘Then it should jump away,’ Henket tells. ‘You have to pull back your hand in time. There are all sorts of stories of people breaking their thumb or their wrist or even losing their thumb. I even heard of someone having been thrown completely over the flywheel with his head against the engine room wall. So it’s a job that demands concentration.’ Recently, Thom Koopmans became the new owner of the Specht. ‘I want to restore it and preserve it as a sailing ship,’ Koopmans says. ‘History like this needs to be preserved for the future.’ Henket starts the engine and sails with Koopmans through the Oosterdok and the Oude Waal in Amsterdam.
Thumbs up to Thom Koopmans for his attitude and effort to preserve history, what a cool old boat.
The sheer number of well preserved, maintained, and used old boats you have in the Netherlands is astounding. Thank you for the very fine videos.
They are close to getting banned thx due to climate fanatics though..
@@Wayoutthere Always fight back these greens are just idiots and lack knowledge and lateral thought!
Really lovely boat with an equally proud young owner.
Heere, I love these videos, you are doing a great service for Dutch history and they are well produced, informative and interesting. I'm a mechanical engineer and I find the technical details very good and all told with a lot of humor. And thanks for the subtitles! They make it really wonderful for an Australian like me. Please keep up the good work.
Wonderful!
Terrific to sea this piece of history pass to an enthusiastic new owner who desires to preserve it.
It's a long time since I have seen anyone start a 30 horsepower by hand power, not many people dare to take on this task. I learned from my father how to do it, it works well if you are not afraid of the machine, and if you know what you are doing. You have a nice engine, and they use little fuel, good luck with your ship and engine.
We call them semi-diesels in Norway. They were quite common in the fishing fleets up until the early 70's. A friend had one. I don't remember the make, but I remember the starting procedure vividly.
Edit: I spoke with my father who could tell me that it was a Sabb 5-9 HP.
Very Exciting, thumbs up 😊
Just one thing!
A CO2 fire extinguisher standing by into the air intake stops a diesel runaway nicely 😅.
Hi Thank you for putting on the English sub titles it really helps .
really cool
Awesome for the young guy who bought it.. What a beauty and love the diesel
Very cool! I would love to ride on this boat! Be safe show more of the interior of this fine vessel
Bravo........show full start up .......process.......wow......Dutch land........if the world was made n 7 days......I spent 14 days n Amsterdam........love the old engine....cheers
Dank!
@Thom Koopmans, thanks you're trying to preserve an old but very fine ship. The Amsterdam city council must show its role in preserving this sailing heritage instead of canceling all of these magnificent ships out of Amsterdam waters.
Other city councils should consider this as well. What if their heritage is replaced by 'the Specht' at electrical power?
Beautiful footage!
THank You for the english
❤🎉Lovely
Mooie video wel gedaan!
Beautiful ❤️
It looks scary being that close to the flywheel. You could catch your balls on it!
Never be in the engine room naked!
His balls are so big that he knows how to protect them.
Zo mooi!
It seems the notion of a big, torque-y, low-RPM Diesel turning a big screw slowly is a good idea that has never really gone away. Modern container ships use the same concept writ large. The engines should outlast the ships but probably won't.
If there's no emissions crap on them and they are probably maintained the should last and last
Mooie video wederom! Graag zou ik eens een kijkje binnenin deze boten willen zien, slaap/woonruimte/kombuis e.d maar ik begrijp dat dit om privacy redenen niet altijd mogelijk zal zijn, misschien zijn er schippers die dit geen probleem vinden...'keep up the good work'
If the old engine runs away, there is no need to smash the crankcase. Just block the air intake.
make a strong canvas bag that fits over the intake, it can't run without air.
most of the time when it run away its a bearing seal thats dead and air get in anyway
Maybe a valve in the exhaust could stop a runaway by building pressure to stop sucking more fuel air in.
Or simply closing of the air inlet. Check several videos of run away truck diesels.
@@RS-vu3df thry that on a kromhout.. lol
😉😉😉👍👍👍
Looks like a darker to me but what would I know I’m from Texas in the USA
Yes and American!
You need a compressed air canister to start.... too dangerous the way you are starting....
especially for the unexpierinced young new owner.
