  • Since 1983, Maarten Henket had been the owner of the Specht, a tugboat of the Amsterdammer type from 1926 with a one cylinder Kromhout M2 hot bulb engine from the same year. De engine is started by hand by ‘rocking’ the flywheel against the compression. ‘Then it should jump away,’ Henket tells. ‘You have to pull back your hand in time. There are all sorts of stories of people breaking their thumb or their wrist or even losing their thumb. I even heard of someone having been thrown completely over the flywheel with his head against the engine room wall. So it’s a job that demands concentration.’ Recently, Thom Koopmans became the new owner of the Specht. ‘I want to restore it and preserve it as a sailing ship,’ Koopmans says. ‘History like this needs to be preserved for the future.’ Henket starts the engine and sails with Koopmans through the Oosterdok and the Oude Waal in Amsterdam.

The sheer number of well preserved, maintained, and used old boats you have in the Netherlands is astounding. Thank you for the very fine videos.

Heere, I love these videos, you are doing a great service for Dutch history and they are well produced, informative and interesting. I'm a mechanical engineer and I find the technical details very good and all told with a lot of humor. And thanks for the subtitles! They make it really wonderful for an Australian like me. Please keep up the good work.

It's a long time since I have seen anyone start a 30 horsepower by hand power, not many people dare to take on this task. I learned from my father how to do it, it works well if you are not afraid of the machine, and if you know what you are doing. You have a nice engine, and they use little fuel, good luck with your ship and engine.

We call them semi-diesels in Norway. They were quite common in the fishing fleets up until the early 70's. A friend had one. I don't remember the make, but I remember the starting procedure vividly.
Edit: I spoke with my father who could tell me that it was a Sabb 5-9 HP.

    Very Exciting, thumbs up 😊
    Just one thing!
A CO2 fire extinguisher standing by into the air intake stops a diesel runaway nicely 😅.

@Thom Koopmans, thanks you're trying to preserve an old but very fine ship. The Amsterdam city council must show its role in preserving this sailing heritage instead of canceling all of these magnificent ships out of Amsterdam waters.
Other city councils should consider this as well. What if their heritage is replaced by 'the Specht' at electrical power?

It seems the notion of a big, torque-y, low-RPM Diesel turning a big screw slowly is a good idea that has never really gone away. Modern container ships use the same concept writ large. The engines should outlast the ships but probably won't.

If the old engine runs away, there is no need to smash the crankcase. Just block the air intake.

Maybe a valve in the exhaust could stop a runaway by building pressure to stop sucking more fuel air in.
