- What is a star note?
Star notes are used by the BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing) to replace misprinted/damaged currency before it goes into circulation. These replacement notes are printed just like normal notes, except there is a star printed in the serial number. On Federal Reserve Notes, the star is where the block letter normally is (the last letter of the serial number). On Legal Tender notes and Silver Certificates, the star is where the prefix normally is (the first letter of the serial number).
Print Runs
Star notes are printed in what are called "runs." For the current printing systems used by the BEP, the maximum run size for star notes is 3.2 million notes (100,000 32-note sheets). Sometimes, this many notes are not needed, in which case less are printed. If a partial run is printed, the next run will start at the next closest multiple of 3.2 million. Star notes get their rarity from the quantity printed and released into circulation. Generally, collectors consider runs of 640,000 notes or less to be rare. Many times, collectors refer to star notes by their run number. This is determined by the number range that the star note's serial number fits into

Just for a really "I can kick myself" moment... Last year i had in my posselyssion a $5 bill (I think) that was in pretty bad shape and it had on it a star on each end of the serial number and 'I spent it'!!! Didn't know anything about star notes then, but i remember wondering if i should spend it (which i did)!!! So just look out for that series. Maybe early 80's.
I collect Star notes, as the latest fine is 5 consecutive numbers which is a good find so far I've been offered 150 / note

ALL state series “ A” on the obverse.
ALL have the beginnings of an additional “O” next to Washington’s photo. If Washington’s photo was removed, you would see the complete “O”
On the obverse under “Washington DC” under the “O” there are thirty-six small “spaces” where
the gap should be but there are also eight “wide “spaces” and one space with no space and touching.
On the reverse ALL 45 have the same small number “4” in the right corner.
As to condition, most are near mint / mint. There are a handful ( perhaps 5) that appear to have been folded in the center. Starting bid: $20,000

I have $1. with a serial in the year 1688. I just found it early this morning. The Glorious Revolution happened that year. There were other important events that year as well. Like the Declaration of War against the Netherlands signed by Louis XIV. It’s a bit weathered but still may bring decent profit.
