  • The AREDS supplements have been the standard of care for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) for over twenty years. For those with intermediate-stage dry AMD, the supplements can reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD by about 25%.
However since their introduction over 20 years ago, the AREDS formulation has become outdated, and it is missing several key nutrients for eye health.
In addition, the AREDS formulation contains toxic levels of a certain compound and may even be dangerous for some people with certain genetic predispositions.
Find out what the many issues are with AREDS in this 4 part video series.
    Part I: Background on AREDS
Part II: 5 Ingredients That Are Missing in AREDS
    Part III: Risks with AREDS
    Part IV: AREDS Alternatives
In this video, "Part I: Background on AREDS," I'll delve into the AREDS and AREDS2 studies and what they showed.

Thanks for the great video Dr Rani.
I'm going to guess that the problem with the AREDs formula for some folks is the level of zinc which causes problems for some people. I've been taking high supplements for almost 20 years ever since getting CSC and being diagnosed with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. I now have early AMD, and trying to get either one of my ophthalmologists to even talk about supplements besides AREDS is frustrating. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.

Yes, exactly. Stay tuned for next week when I'll talk about the risks with AREDS. In the meantime, Part II was just released on 5 missing nutrients in AREDS, so please check it out!

Hi Rani, I'm in the UK and was diagnosed with early AMD, 2 years ago, I was 47. I wasn't told about supplements to start with, it was only last year an optician mentioned them. But I didn't realise that they were more for intermediate than early?
Thank you for your information, you always give so much xx
