If niacin/NR/NMN (to boost NAD+) helps, I'd expect that other mitochondrial boosters such as CoQ10 and red/near-infrared light would also help. It seems like a ton of problems get better when mitochondrial health improves. Everything that increases ATP production enhances cellular repair ability.

glad I came across your video. I've been diagnosed with glaucoma and cataracts. My left eye is worse, and the eye dr want's to have surgery done. I do not like the idea of having my eyeball cut on. I've seen the video's, and its not something I'm ready to do right now. I'm using a couple different combination eye supplements, Neuroptene and Eye Vision Guard (Piping Rock). I ordered the Nicotinamide capsules and will start taking those as well. Anything to avoid eye surgery. I also use castor oil, in and on the eyes at bedtime. I was using Lantanaprost drops Rx, but my goodness, the side effects were making my vision worse. The flashy zig zag in my vision, leading me to headaches, also light sensitivity was terrible, I couldn't stand being out in the sun, or lights in the grocery store, dry eye. SMH. Praying and hoping these supplements work together.
I just had cataract surgery. It was very easy and painless. Just like looking at a bright light for a few minutes and they give you medicine to relax. I've gone from being blind too being able to see. Absolutely miraculous. I was so scared I didn't want to do it but now I'm thrilled with the outcome.
Nothing will reverse damage already done to your lens by cataracts. Things can slow progression down. Reduced carbohydrate consumption is probably the best way to slow progression. Find out how bad your cataract is. If you wait too long, like I did, I ran into all kinds of problems during surgery. It also depends on if you are really, really nearsighted. If you are, the lens might not stay in place, and you will need an anterior chamber lens. Not all eye doctors have experience with severe cataracts as they are rare. It is also the case that down the road after cataract surgery problems show up, especially if you are younger. It may increase your risk of retinal detachment. It may increase your risk for glaucoma (which you already have. I don't know if it can make it worse; I'd check). I had 17 years of good sight with cataract surgery, but I did have a detached retina, and now I have eye pressure problems in one eye. Thank you so much for the info on Latanoprost. I got a bottle yesterday but hesitated as it said not to use if you have iritis or unveitis, which I have had in the past. It can actually worsen the swelling. I'm waiting until Monday to check with my doctor. So thank you for warming me about all those terrible side-effects you had. I already have dry eye. I don't need it any worse. The instructions also said it changes eye color to brown. Good luck with yoru treatment.
Dr. Chua, thank you so much for your very detailed explanation. I feel like I’ve taken a minicourse on my glaucoma situation. I look forward to more of your interesting updates.
I take exception to the notion that patient safety in this instance is maximized by not recommending B3 to glaucoma patients - there is widespread use of NR/NMN and other B3 precursors or variants and numerous studies showing it is quite safe in high doses. Why isn’t patient safety here better served by recommending B3 to glaucoma patients and possibly limiting their retinal degradation (with little to no risk) rather than being “cautious” about a natural vitamin essential to NAD production? I just don’t get this - vision is hugely important to people and in this instance it seems to me the harm over being cautious doesn’t balance out with the risks.
I wondered the exact same thing when I watch this and came to the same conclusion you did. Let’s lose our vision while we wait for two or three years of tests to assess the effectiveness and safety, huh?
There is new research linking a metabolyte of B3 to heart disease you can see it on youtube here, but its not causative, since I have glaucoma I opted to remain taking it

Interesting. I don't have glaucoma, but my dermatologist has some patients take Niacinamide - a version of B3 shown in studies to reduce the chance of a NM skin cancer in those who have already had one. The research was specific to Niacinimide and not Niacin. It would be interesting to see if a particular version of B3 is better than another for glaucoma patients. Thanks for the interesting video.

Very concise and informative, some of the most useful information that one can garner from UA-cam,ie B3 and NAD+. I’ve been on both supplements for several years, I do notice improvements in my eyes as well as other health benefits.
Asking ? I was told the retina once damaged can't repair itself. Are you telling me that in some patients taking B3 has repaired some damaged areas of the retina? The reason I'm asking is I take an a bunch of different supplements. And my eye doctor is smiling telling me to not change what ever om doing. Is it possible that B3 could be playing factor in helping my Glaucoma ? I'm 60 years old too.
It is done onto you as you believe. SO....NEVER EVER believe what doctors tell you. They have been proven wrong SO many times. Plus you run the risk of creating (we are creators, because our father is a creator) what you believe.
Thank you for this information. Thank you for this information. I have a start up and taking the past month drop that is not pesticide free. Are there long term affects of using a eyedrops such as this? Like this video he taught me a lot. Can you answer questions? It seems like there’s a lot of interest, but I don’t see any answers. Continue the good work. Thank you.
Safety times three may be a good plan. Blindness is not always curable in glaucoma. Some people may do the high doses on their own, if their situation is dire.
Thank you for your informative video. I had been taking a number of things for other conditions and it would seem they may have created a perfect storm to developing glaucoma for first time as these measures use up b3 in body and raised IOP (although my optic nerve was always different to the norm all my life before this but no loss of field vision occurred till now). I am going to try the high dose b3 as a repeat visual field test is due in next 5 weeks. Being so recently diagnosed my optic nerve damaged areas might possibly be salvaged as mentioned in your video. Will update you with my results.
@@sucka4358 Specialist found no sign of glaucoma! seems equipment at optometrist was not advanced enough for accurate testing and my optic nerve being odd shape was hard to image correctly there. @jocs8824. Any news? Were you able to determine even an anecdotal relationship between the condition of your eye/retina/ganglion cells and the increases b3? If so, can you or will you provide a few details?
I'm going to put my hubby on this vitamin. Our diet includes all those foods and excellent exercise, so can't improve on that.. But can't do any harm to take the vitamin at daily reccomended doses.
@MichaelRChuaMD sir i am 26 year old recently I got eye checkup and found that I have Glucoma my eye pressure is left 24 and Right 25 what to do now please suggest. I am worried after hearing this thing
Very good info - especially the background of optic nerve, energy, mitochondria, and the from there, B3. Rather than just "take this twice a day". My question is - while this talk is on glaucoma, yet how B3 works to help mitochondria is surely more generic in benefits? So B3 + pyruvate would be helpful even to non-glaucoma folks? Could it be that industrial production and refining of foods, is stripping us of these, whereas caveman would have more nutrients by eating raw foods? Or perhaps artificial lighting, stress, toxins, high carb high sugar, etc, is causing depletion. A related question is - those doses look high, but is for trying to arrest or reverse damage. What about those without macular degeneration? Can we make do with, say, half that dose? I ask this because at 3g, there will be lots of flushing and itching. Or maybe split into 3 x 1g per day, rather than a big hit.
I’ve been taking 4grams daily of nicotinic acid b3 for the past 2 yrs, I’m fitter, healthier & stronger at 51 than I was at 43 with blood work and ecg etc to prove it. I will never stop taking this stuff and fully expect to live until I’m well past 100 with excellent life quality. Everyone should be taking this stuff in gram doses daily.
I checked into high dose niacin side effects. Its pretty risky, at the dosage in these studies there are risks of gout, and liver disease, and some nasty GI issues.
I have read many books, I listened to many UA-cam videos by many of the worlds leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
This is great news, and very helpful for those of us that want to protect our vision. But I have to ask--don't we already have pretty good data on the safety of vitamin B3 supplementation? Maybe not at therapeutic doses over a longer term, but might it be prudent to supplement with more moderate doses as prophylaxis?
If I had glaucoma, I sure as heck wouldn’t wait for the studies to come out. I would start taking B3 supplement and/or eating more B3 rich foods right away!
Dr. Abram Hoffer treated schizophrenic patients with up to 18,000mg of niacin. Read "Niacin: The Real Story" for more information. Most side effects can be avoided by only using pure niacin (Nicotinic Acid) Avoid all slow release and nicotinamide. The flush is not dangerous and some think it could be beneficial. Taking in the evening right before bed seems to make the flush less intense for some reason. The biggest risk with high dose niacin is diabetes. Chris Master John has a video on how to take niacin without getting diabetes.
Mike, sadly, Niacin does not like my body. I always get my supplements checked by my alternative doctor. Recently, chose to try Niacin out first. Big mistake, as I had a bad reaction. The doctor confirmed it, so now I must be treated BEFORE I can use it. Thank you FOR this information.
Are the studies mentioned listed on your website or YT channel? Also vitamin B2 for cataracts (and migraines, see many info in my nutrition books. If you are low in 1 vitamin and take too much extra can use up its cofactors (other nutrients, vitamins, minerals...), so balance or start slow (some can take large amounts). Niacin can cause liver problems in some forms as a supplement (nicatinamide). Dont have glaucoma, but Dr said had cupping optic nerve , so took a diff type of photo that could see the nerves better. She didnt know what caused cupping (wonder if parents had it)
Niacin (Nicotinamide) does not cause liver damage. It may elevate enzymes level but that does not suggest pathology. If you stop niacin 5 days before blood test, the enzymes level will normalize. You can take a look at Prof.Andrew Saul's presentation ua-cam.com/video/M3fLHpA6CKQ/v-deo.html or look up the Dr. Abram Hoffers.
I wonder if there would be any differential effect between using nicotinamide as a glaucoma treatment versus niacin. Other than that compliance using niacin is likely to be much less.
Nicotinamide is non-flushing. It is the form of B3 my ophthalmologist suggested I used because of that, and he also said I should check with my primary care physician before taking nicotinamide. I have severe glaucoma in both eyes.
would the B3 form nicotinic acid be as effective over b3 nicotinamide? I prefer using nicotinac acid because of the flushing and redness of skin that it causes, this way I know that this form is working when it has the effect of relaxing the blood vessels allowing better blood flow.
Nicotinic acid is the ONLY form of niacin you should take. Humans cannot convert the other forms to NAD+ due to the pries handler pathway (we are not made like rodents in this respect so studies are incorrect). I take upto 4grams every day, it’s incredible stuff and will keep you fit, strong and healthy for many many years to come.
when i stopped drinking monster (or any energy drinks) just last week, which has vitamin b3 i was diagnosed with glaucoma im only 33 i stopped drinking monster because i had a kidney stone. this week has been tough, as I originally thought i was having caffeine withdrawal which was causing my to have ocular migraines when in reality it may seem like I have vitamin b3 deficiency.
it doesnt slow down it should stop glaucoma , B3 is a dangerous vitamin at high levels new research is linking it to heart disease, so only if it stops glaucoma it should be indicated
The NIH is against taking Niacin in higher dosages and long term, and they say that it can increase fluid in your eyes. I don't trust them but it's hard to know if Niacin is good or not. I would like to take it for my eyes and heart.
Fantastic info! Thank you! ( *Also- another reminder why animal testing is not only inhumane, but fairly useless.. Way past time for universal switch to non-animal forms of research in the scientific and academic community.)
Today is 1-28-2024 and I respectfully ask this question about Vitamin B3 ( which is Niacin ). I have glaucoma and struggle with it. I also have “ non-alcoholic cirrhosis of my liver “. I am told that people with liver disease must NOT use Vitamin B3 ( Niacin ). I would greatly appreciate what you have to say to me.
I am in a similar position to you. Try eating niacin rich foods such as Liver, chicken breast (assume you are not vegetarian), tuna, turkey, salmon, anchovies, peanuts, avocado, brown rice, mushrooms and peas. A study found that all those with glaucoma were deficient in niacin.
I just met on this video it’s more than interesting. The doctor said I have glaucoma. I use eye drops. Did laser and trabulactory treatments. Take bilberry pills gingo biloba, I’m going to try vitamin B3
Hey guys I want to make one more comment on this video I tried the B3 solution as mentioned in the video with no results but I think I know what the problem is I believe that to make this stuff work you have to get the methylated version of B3 or the methylated version of nicotinamide I believe it's called methyl nicotinamide the only thing is I cannot find it anywhere I know it exists but I cannot find it if anyone can find a retail outlet for methyl nicotinamide please comment in the video I believe that methylation would make all the difference in the world thanks
Yolks are high in vitamin D (which is a steroidal hormone NOT a vitamin). Vitamin D is also a POTENT tissue remodeler (all connective tissue which includes nerves). This is why it might make sense to eat egg yolks as vitamin D3 might be what is causing the tissue remodeling and regeneration of the optic nerve???
You seem to imply that vitamin B3 is a nutrient or food requirement and not just a medical treatment!? Which foods therefore will supply the B3 as inclusiveness!? So patients can make appropriate lifestyle comparisons one would reason!?
Yes, I heard of it before covid and now nothing. I think high eye pressure is diabetes of the eye but they don't want to tell us that. How can it be so different from diabeticneuropathy which is damage to the blood vessels of the retina which are right there close to the optic nerves? Isn't that caused by high blood sugar spikes? Funny I see a relationship there that doctors don't want us to figure out. Imagine all the business they'd lose if we controlled our blood sugar and eye damage through diet, vitamins and minerals!
That's good, my eye pressure was 23 my optometrist freaked out , I have tried a carnivore diet and it's down to 19, and I'm also taking nicotinamide 2 Grams a day.

What about NMN supplements? Is there a difference between B3 Na NMN?
Wow, thank you doctor for that recent update
We have grown back optic nerves in rats
Using what?
I would like to know how. Can you please explain?
It doesn't matter. We aren't rats lol
Dr Chua explained this topic in depth in a previous video
@MrAnderson2845 Of course it matters. It shows that it's possible, specifically in mammals.
What about thiamine and Alpha lipoic acid they have shown great results at reversing nerve damage,so why not try it, since retina is a nerve
Have read a lot it people have improved using Benfotiamine which I heard is a bit more powerful than the thiamine version. Giving it a go anyway
Thank you for the video summary and the references :)
Very helpful! Keep it up!
Your videos are exceptional!
should you expect anything less from an asian guy?
Fantastic doctor. Thank you.
What supplements and doses do you take?
glaucoma doesnt have to do with the retina, but the Optic Nerve which is more serious
Thank you for all this information Dr. Chua, I have a question…. Can glaucoma be caused by cancer?
Check problem interactions with atorvastatin before dosing up.
Please say more. I have glaucoma and take statins.
If you cannot consume nicotinamide, what other B3 form do you suggest?
Will update you with my results.
red led light theraphy might help..look it up
Don’t forget to share your results 😀 best to you!

@@sucka4358 Specialist found no sign of glaucoma! seems equipment at optometrist was not advanced enough for accurate testing and my optic nerve being odd shape was hard to image correctly there. Eye pressure normal. Now here is the thing tho - I stopped SAM-e and greatly reduced methylfolate supplements and added in only 15mg niacin(not niacinamide). They do opposite things to gene expression.
@jocs8824. Any news? Were you able to determine even an anecdotal relationship between the condition of your eye/retina/ganglion cells and the increases b3? If so, can you or will you provide a few details?
Thx you have given vital information that my paid eye Dr. would not explain.
They are incompetent and ignorant and your just a stat to them.
👍
3 g’s of B3 per day. That is a whopping dose. How was that dose arrived at? Were lower doses shown to be ineffective?
I’ve been taking 4grams daily of nicotinic acid b3 for the past 2 yrs, I’m fitter, healthier & stronger at 51 than I was at 43 with blood work and ecg etc to prove it. I will never stop taking this stuff and fully expect to live until I’m well past 100 with excellent life quality. Everyone should be taking this stuff in gram doses daily.
I checked into high dose niacin side effects. Its pretty risky, at the dosage in these studies there are risks of gout, and liver disease, and some nasty GI issues.
Niacin , yes, but nicotinamide has been safely tolerated for months at the 2g-3g dose range , there are even large associative metadata studies on it.
@@unassailable6138hi what is the exact dose when in months ? 2 months on it and then stop? Or can you cycle it back in ?
Thank you for your very easy to understand report on glaucoma.🙏🏻
Right
That's Chris Masterjohn
Spellcheck hates me
Do you know which type of nicotinamide is being researched?
Mike, sadly, Niacin does not like my body. I always get my supplements checked by my alternative doctor. Recently, chose to try Niacin out first. Big mistake, as I had a bad reaction. The doctor confirmed it, so now I must be treated BEFORE I can use it. Thank you FOR this information.
Niacin red hot flush is normal.
@@KasKade7 The flush did not bother me. It was an allergic reaction. Friday I will be treated FOR it, so that I WILL be able to take it.
You can take a look at Prof.Andrew Saul's presentation ua-cam.com/video/M3fLHpA6CKQ/v-deo.html
or look up the Dr.
I already have glaucoma. Would it be useful if I begin to take vitamin b3 supplements to prevent further vision loss ?
Since ATP can be produced in the lab, is it possible to experiment on direct ATP injection into the blood ?
Great presentation! Thanks!
would the B3 form nicotinic acid be as effective over b3 nicotinamide? I prefer using nicotinac acid because of the flushing and redness of skin that it causes, this way I know that this form is working when it has the effect of relaxing the blood vessels allowing better blood flow.
Nicotinic acid is the ONLY form of niacin you should take. Humans cannot convert the other forms to NAD+ due to the pries handler pathway (we are not made like rodents in this respect so studies are incorrect). I take upto 4grams every day, it’s incredible stuff and will keep you fit, strong and healthy for many many years to come.
when i stopped drinking monster (or any energy drinks) just last week, which has vitamin b3 i was diagnosed with glaucoma im only 33
i stopped drinking monster because i had a kidney stone. this week has been tough, as I originally thought i was having caffeine withdrawal which was causing my to have ocular migraines when in reality it may seem like I have vitamin b3 deficiency.
How much Dose of Vitamin B3 should be taken each day do you recommend to slow down Glucoma?
it doesnt slow down it should stop glaucoma , B3 is a dangerous vitamin at high levels new research is linking it to heart disease, so only if it stops glaucoma it should be indicated
The NIH is against taking Niacin in higher dosages and long term, and they say that it can increase fluid in your eyes. I don't trust them but it's hard to know if Niacin is good or not. I would like to take it for my eyes and heart.
Any research on B3 and chronic kidney disease?
What's the link between thyroid hormones and issues with eye? If you address your thyroid issues it will address these issues.
Any research on B3 and Retinopathy?
Fantastic info! Thank you! ( *Also- another reminder why animal testing is not only inhumane, but fairly useless.. Way past time for universal switch to non-animal forms of research in the scientific and academic community.)
Dr. Chua, how about liver toxicity risk of Niacinamide?
Short duration
None if you don't use the extended or slow release flush niacin
Nice video.Thanks.
Which one of vitamins B3 do you recommend niacin , niacinamide or nicotine?
Nicotinamide but not Niacin?
New release of vitamin b3 now linked to increased risk of heart disease. Will that be taken in consideration for a glaucoma patient?
It's very disappointing this guy doesn't bother answering any questions put to him in the comments.😢
not doing anything is unsafe. if you were the patient you would be sensitive to this fact.
Do you think if I just vit b3 will be ok? I have early stages of glaucoma
Anytime a person takes one vitamin B supplement alone……it automatically knocks all other Vitamin B’s out of whack.
Anybody knows what to do for eye pressure?
Whole food diet is way to go
Hi Doc. Can the same be done for something like pseudo tumor optic nerve pressure/inflammation?
@@lightliz7834 I am writing down your list ! What a Godsend you are !!! I like each of those foods. Thank you so very much !❤️

I just met on this video it’s more than interesting. The doctor said I have glaucoma. I use eye drops. Did laser and trabulactory treatments. Take bilberry pills gingo biloba, I’m going to try vitamin B3

Apparently there's a recent study showing increased risk of heart disease from B3, so there's that. Can't win.

I have to try vitamin B3
how's it going?
Hello, how is vitamin B3 working for you?
Do you sell claugoma medicine
Hey guys I want to make one more comment on this video I tried the B3 solution as mentioned in the video with no results but I think I know what the problem is I believe that to make this stuff work you have to get the methylated version of B3 or the methylated version of nicotinamide I believe it's called methyl nicotinamide the only thing is I cannot find it anywhere I know it exists but I cannot find it if anyone can find a retail outlet for methyl nicotinamide please comment in the video I believe that methylation would make all the difference in the world thanks
Look into CDP CHOLINE to help against glaucoma. And eat egg (yolks do the business).
Yolks are high in vitamin D (which is a steroidal hormone NOT a vitamin). Vitamin D is also a POTENT tissue remodeler (all connective tissue which includes nerves). This is why it might make sense to eat egg yolks as vitamin D3 might be what is causing the tissue remodeling and regeneration of the optic nerve???
interesting...would a multivitamin help prevent glaucoma?
Not by a long shot.
Your title says B3 is the new holy Grail, then in the actual video you say you're not going to recommend to patients, which is it?
You seem to imply that vitamin B3 is a nutrient or food requirement and not just a medical treatment!? Which foods therefore will supply the B3 as inclusiveness!? So patients can make appropriate lifestyle comparisons one would reason!?
Dr Berg says Vitamin D3, u say Vitamin B3...I am confused...🙄
I've had adverse liver function test results and constant nausea with niacin supplementation, in the past.
Slow release

Have anyone heard about insulin eyes drop that can possibly restore vision? It is in clinical trials now.
Thanks
Thanks for your support!
Where do I get pyruvate supplements?

Vitamin B 6 protects the optic nerve.
